What's new

England v Pakistan | 1st Test | Old Trafford, Manchester | 5-9 August, 2020 | Day 1 Thread

If this day washes out ....... the only way we have got it to score big and hopefully get a follow on.......... long shot but I am hoping for it.

Looks like rain will end days play, we should get 3 days off sunshine for next 3 days.

I think it's good if it's done for the day. We can bat in the sun tomorrow and it should be a lot easier to bat.

What do you think MMHS?

121 is still too low a score to make that assessment IMO and only in 1st inn.

121/2.

England don't have a great batting lineup. Pakistani bowling should trouble them.

Pakistan just have to cross 350.

Anderson is getting too much criticism. He took an edge off the ball and had one catch miss. People are critisizing him too much just cause he didnt pick a wicket.

I hope play resumes and pakistan gets till 200 with only one loss of wicket.

If play can continue till 7, then I think we could be back on to play a few overs.

That's my point, thats still over 200 runs away, but I hope they do it.

England can even draw this test assuming that match starts on day 2. They won't throw it like Windies did.

Any overs lost today can be made up on remaining 4 days

If it has to rain, better on day 1 - they can recover up to 32 overs.

Yes mate that's only 8 overs extra in the day needed pluss Pakistan playing 2 spinners can thier be more than 90 overs be bowled in a day

Inspection at 5 and there is no more forecast of rain till the end of play so let's see when we restart.

Why an inspection in 20 minutes, why not now? Makes no sense

Play can go on till 7 or half 7 light permitting i think. So maybe another 25 overs crickey maybe.

I think the outfield will be wet. I don't expect play at least for an hour.

"Opening in England and especially batting first in a Test is one of the hardest for visiting openers. Since 2016 20 openers have had a chance to bat and no opener has faced more deliveries in an innings than Shan Masood."

Sadly Pakistan now might have to do surviving stuff for rest of the day. Babar should play his natural game and shan must just occupy one side and keep rotating.

If they start at 5 15 then he needs to play his natural game stim have around 20 overs can be bowled

Babar will play his natural game irrespective of how many overs he gets.

as long as 30 or less overs are lost, they can most likely be made up over the other 4 days.

Sunset/Maghrib around 9, potentially could play till 7.30.

A short session here means england bowlers can have a go with ball hard now and again early in morning. So we need to stay solid.

Cricket is so far behind other sports when it comes to dealing with natural conditions! There is literally no rain the air but we can't start the play because of damp outfield. Precious time being wasted

Should be roofs or some form of covering for Tests. Now bad light will cause further delay, what a joke!. Good news is we shouldn't lose this Test now!:moha

If it was odis or t20s they would be straight back on the pitch

Sissy game.

Anymore play or should I go out and use 50% discount on food given by UK's Rahul Dravid?

Have you ever played cricket? Try sliding around or fielding on wet grass, easy way to get injured.

If they can have a kick about then they can start play no difference

The outfiled has to be dry, not damp. For the sake of a few overs, it's not right to risk players safety. It's part of the game, until instant drying outfield technology is invented, nothing will change.

Agreed with what your saying surely the management would let them even have a kick about if it's wet

Rain came just at the right time for England . . got lucky! Pak was starting to get on top of them and they weren't bowling well either

Seems umpires have forced England into spin due to bad light.

What are they saying? Unable to hear comms at the moment.

Poor tactics by England to go all out short bowling with Archer in this light. Saying they could've been more subtle about it rather than setting an obvious short bowl field and prompting the umpires to give them a warning
