What's new

England v South Africa l 1st Test l Lords l 10/7/08

Pietersen is toying with his one time countrymen today.

Bell two short of his eight century.

Absolute rubbish bowling by the Saffies, I dont think this SA team has a chance against OZ in the series coming up. India is undoubtfully the true 2nd best test nation that can challenge OZ...

Pieterson having it all his way again. England batting south africa right out the match.

Collingwood gets a shocker from Bowden. Not even close to the inside edge.

Ambrose out ct Smith off Morkel
Eng 422-6

commentator wondering if it carried and the other one saying it just carried. But the first one saying if it was referred then the 3rd umpire might have gone the other way

ting ting ting - Bell reaches 2750 test runs

Saffers look demoralised.

Lords gives Eng a standing ovation!

Its boring for me just because england are scoring at 4 RPO and there is no fun for the bowlers.

Four tons from the world's greatest pace attack! Put Kallizzz :28: back on so he can get a ton too. :)))

Code:
Bowling O M R W Econ
	 DW Steyn 32 6 116 1 3.62 (2nb, 2w)
	 M Ntini 27 2 125 0 4.62
	 M Morkel 30 3 102 4 3.40 (5nb)
	 JH Kallis 20 3 70 0 3.50 (1w)
	 PL Harris 30 7 105 1 3.50 (4nb)

So this is the Jaapie attack that was going to put us to the sword? Geez they look even worse than the WI popgun attack!

Broad and Bell have a new English record for 7th wicket partnership against SA. now they are on 119
last partnership was made in 1913-14

Broad has now passed his highest test score. He is on 65 now

Come on Stuey, get a ton mate. Punish the world's greatest pace attack!

This performance from Steyn is worthy of the MIGHTY AND TALL ISHANT!

in england you need a number or types of bowlers in your attack..a legspinner or mystery spinner...and a swing bolwer who can put it on a good length(pollock,mcgrath,asif,zaheer)...combine that with an out and out pacer and you can beat the poms!!...currently the SA attack lokks very samey samey!

Are England waiting for Bell's 200? If they do then Broad will be close to 100 too. Broad's average has now gone to 40 (if he stays not out).
Bell 185 - Broad 74 - partnership of 147
Eng 569-6 after 147 overs
33 overs left today
declaration probably coming in 12 overs - They are scoring at over 4 an over and that should be enough for 200 (bell), 100(Broad) and 600 (England) unless the players slow down as they close centuries

okay either rain is coming or the batsmen are thinking about centuries. Last 5 overs 10 runs. Huge storm around Heathrow

Broad 76 bolwed by Harris
Eng 547-7 after 150.3 overs

Stuart Broad - Last 5 test match stats (batting):

Code:
[B]Mat Inns NO Runs HS Ave BF SR 100 50 0 4s 6s[/B]
5 6 1 268 76 [B]53.60[/B] 500 53.60 0 2 0 35 2
Ave of 53.60 ...... isn't it better than Dravid's?

Rain stops play again
Eng 587-7 after 153.3 overs
before the stoppage 26 overs were left today
Bell on 197

Poor Bell if it hadnt been for the leg bye he would have gotten his 200, apparently players are off because of rain.

Players are out. No declaration yet. Now if they declare after Bell gets 200 is the light good enough for SA to bat? England will have to think about that too, that keep batting today as light might not be good enough

:90: Bell reverse sweeps for 1 to move to 198. :92:
Boycott saying He will call Harris a slow bowler, not a spinner. some other things said - He is a wonderful bowler. He is a buffet bowler

155.1 Steyn to Bell, 1 run, well, he gets one! Goes to pull a half-tracker and scoops it over Kallis at midwicket, the ball is in the air for some time but the fielder cannot run back in time, so Bell completes a nervous single to move to 199

Bell ct & b Harris on 199
England declares
Eng 593-8 after 156.2 overs

156.2 Harris to Bell, OUT, good grief, he's well held on 199! Down he skips, trying to break the shackles, connecting well on the booming drive but its rather well intercepted by Harris himself, steadying and taking it to his right with both hands... Bell is shocked but has to go, well played

IR Bell c & b Harris 199 (336b 20x4 1x6) SR: 59.22
8 hours and 16 min for his 199

Bad luck for Shermanator, he deserved a double there. But how such a mediocre player could get to 199 I'll never know.

India's attack is actually not that bad - it's just not as good as some think it is. It would be in the top 4 or 5 attacks around the world.

i bet u if kumble was captaining, india would have played 10 more ovs.

props to vaugh for declaring

now time to see anderson bowl.

Another solid days batting from england and Bell was brilliant to watch today. Broad showed what a quality lower order batter he is aswell. I can see sidebottom causing S.A batting problems here. G smith will be the key to S.A getting to a solid start as they are behind in this game at moment!

England didn't go for the psychological 600
7 batsmen have been out (or stranded??) on 199

There's a young lad on the field for Bell. Haven't the foggiest who he is, but he looks about 14 - cricinfo
TMS tried to guess it and they said Seffeld??? from Sussex???? is the substitue fielder

Five slips and gully for Smith - first ball
Then four slips and two gullies

I think it's fair to say that the vaunted Saffie pace attack has been absolutely rogered.

We said the same after Viru scored a triple century in the first test and look what they did in the second.

But agreed Ozzies will pummell them easily at home..

BAD LIGHT AND RAIN END PLAY FOR THE DAY

SOUTH AFRICA TRAIL BY 586 RUNS

Very poor performance by the world's best pace attack !!

Where is Saffer when we need an explanation ??

Dont under-estimate them yet... though its very tempting to mock saffer now :D

Will someone please explain in NON-SARCASTIC, NON-PREJUDICED way what went wrong with the Saf pacers ?

cmon, we all know they are not too mediocre.. today reminds of Jayawardene/Sangakkara's 500+ partnership and mighty whupping they received in Lanka.

2 excellent days of batting, absolutely nothing to pick at. Good innings from Strauss and Cook to put on 100 that will be largely forgotten given the middle order peformance - a shame, as putting on an opening partnership and posting a good 1st innings total is a proven method of winning test matches.

Broad, Pietersen and Bell all out of the top drawer. Tied with Bell's 115 in Pakistan as his best performance, definitely Broad's best performance, and probably in the top 5 Pietersen knocks. Let's hope this is a sign of things to come and all the good form has not just come at once!

3 single figures were Vaughan (got a very good ball), Collingwood (got umpired out) and Ambrose (the number 7 fails often in tests) - all excusable failures.

Not to get too ahead of ourselves mind you. South Africa v England is usually a close series full of close games, and the Lords batting wicket is one of the best batting tracks in England these days. The last side to win a test here was Australia 3 years ago, and even then, it took brilliant bowling from McGrath, Warne, Lee, Harmison and Flintoff to take 20 wickets for their teams in this game. All the tests since then have been draws. It is time for this England side to prove that they are actually getting better and take 20 SA wickets in the remaining three days.

PACE = Pace Accelerates Current England, batting mile stones even Stuart Broad looks like Gary Sobers.
Styne more of Pakistan batting and Bangladeshi batting please.
This was after 3 days of constant rain prior to the test match.

They are just all much of muchness ,when they were touring all of the last year subcontinent every one was oh how good there "pace attack is" but when they come to England or Australia they get found out due to the opposition working out there bowlers Angles and line and lengths, they do not possess a genuinely consistent fast pacey bowlers.
Once there opening spell is over they become Big fat Trundlers who are bowling at medium pace, occasional bowl that goes at high speed does not turn a so called medium pacer in to a fast bowler.

What happened was probably the first 1-2 sessions of the game. In first session they were spraying the ball every where except to the stumps. I am sure they will come back next innings and next match. Steyn has shown that he can bowl and Morkel is only 6 tests experience. Right now SA has to get 400 at probably 3 an over to save the match (draw).

Whats all these reports that the MCC members VERBALLY ABUSED Graeme Smith and his team inside 'The Long Room'?

Apparently they will or have issued an apology?

Any one heard about this?
