Umpires: Billy Bowden and Daryl Harper

South Africa won the toss and elected to field first. Should be interesting to see how Steyn and Morkel operate with the weather conditions and the moisture in the pitch.

I'm looking forward to this series. Should be some good cricket.

Hi saffer....long time no see. No link with me i'm afraid.

England 0 for 0 after 2.3 overs

Strauss not out 0
Cook not out 0

I found a link thanks. Slow track put my hope of some bouncers etc at bay for the time being.

Yeah seems like a pretty dissaponting track.

Lord's has been a poor track for a while, but I'm sure England will still manage to struggle. New Zealand would have had a decent chance of beating us in the last Test here but for the weather. With Oram's hundred they must have had 300 or so in the bank, and that would have seemed unlikely for a 4th innings chase. I don't think SA have bowled particularly well though, so far...

Another flat pitch at Lords. This has been the trend for some time now with the last five tests ending in stalemates. Most probably due to visiting teams lifting their game at Lords and England invariably struggling in the past.

Boooorrrrrriiiiiinnnnnggggggg

Booo :po:

No wonder people worry about Test cricket if this is the junk they serve up

Edit - hooray a shot!

I recall NZ were about 220 ahead with 6/7 wickets down and England had virtually given up after tea. I was at the ground. Oram had played some very entertaining strokes on what was otherwise a pretty uneventful day.

This is a team bowling on the first morning of a Test series - a team with pretensions to be the best in the world eh? :p

Bowl at the stumps you idiots.....

Now, that is what u call pace!

Just warming up yet :p

SA bowlers really trying to do too much, bowlers been all over the place.

yeah,,,the wicket is sooo slow to be fair. Really taken all my early hype out of the game. It's a "contain them" kinf of day and hope the pitch quickens up tomorrow.

The pitch is not helping you but your bowlers are not attacking the batsmen at all - with the exception of Morkel but he is spraying them at the moment.

Edit 92.9mph from Morkel

And another 92

Good crowd in at Lords.

SA bowling inaccurate - spraying it a bit

35-0

From all those deliveries, only 3 would have hit the stumps :)))

In more than 1 hour of play :))) :)))

Edit- it finally occurs to Morkel to maybe bowl over the wicket

Kallis looks out of shape. Really let himself go.

Quite impressed with Morkel's pace touching 93 MPH but his line has been rubbish so far...All Saffie bowlers bowling bad line today...

Sadly he is the only one bowling a decent line

I hope they bowl like this when they tour Oz :D We won't be 0/43...

That's right. If Hayden gets injured yet again...Katich will replace him and you'll be 0/23...:D

SA will loose this series badly .........leave kallis , SA batsmen are the worst players of swing !

I can only put it down to SA not coming to terms with the Lord's slope.

53-0

Hooray a 44444

This is gripping stuff, some people in the stream I am watching are talking about England getting 500 - at this rate it will take them 3 days.....

Random Aussie.

Its a TEST MATCH - not a T20.

It doesnt have to be over today.

Seems like a draw from the way pitch is behaving.

No but there could be something, anything, exciting happening.

Bowlers bowling wide of the stumps, batsmen not playing shots. Zero crowd noise.

there is enough assistance in the pitch , but SA bowlers havent been able to use it .....I think eng bowlers will exploit the conditions better & am sure SA batsmen will struggle here !

wats steyn doing bowling so short ?

Just imagine what the aussies will do to these SA bowlers this summer :O .. Scared to even think about it..

A rather laboured effort from SA so far. Didnt make the ENG batsman play at the ball in the early overs.

Good start from England. New ball seen off, which on the first morning of a Test match after so much rain is the most important thing. This is a Test match, and anything over 2.5 per over is perfectly acceptable as far as I'm concerned.

When Graeme Smith put us in, I laughed. "Win the toss and bat, you muppet" I exclaimed.

Hopefully I'll still be laughing at stumps!

Yep Big Harv - if you lose the toss and are sent in on these sorts of conditions, no wickets lost is gold. Good stuff by England.

SA will have discussed their lines during the break and will probably attack the batsmen a lot more now. Otherwise, this could spell real trouble for SA.

You mean Dale
yeah. I heard the commentator metion Morkel first and was saying these can't be byes. That is unfair to the keeper.

We're getting towards the moment of truth. For the last couple of years, our batsmen have been getting 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's, then getting out. To beat SA, they'll need to do better than that. Can they do it? Well, there isn't a shred of doubt in my mind that every single one of our batsmen is capable of doing it, but they need to start actually doing it now.

Vaughan would have done the same, they are saying pitch should get quicker.

Cook and Strauss have excellent 50-100 conversion rates to be fair, Big Harv

Just as well we lost the toss then.

There are very few instances in this country where it pays to insert a team, at least in a Test match.

A greentop in overcast conditions perhaps might justify such a decision, but this by Lord's standards is very far from being a greentop, and the weather hasn't been particularly overcast.

Strauss is gone!

114-1

It pitched outside leg....

Andrew wasn't too impressed with the decision, and rightly so

Morkel made the breakthrough

OH dear.

Really POOR decison by the umpire Harper

Strauss is given LBW.

No way was tha out.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

I'm trying not to get too angry, but that was just what we didn't need.

:pissed: :pissed: :pissed:

Micheal Vaughan

Well & truly BOWLED for 2 - Steyn STRIKES!

117/2

Kevin Pietersen due in next against his one time homeland - in ODI cricket he has three centuries in eight games against them

South African born Kevin Pieterson comes out to face his fellow countrmen

As happens so often, one bad decision leads to a second wicket. Steyn finally bowls one at the stumps and hits Michael Vaughan's.

Damn Vaughnie gone! (Come on England)

did you know that Smith used to refer to him as "the Queer" during the last tour?

Collapso begino

Cook is gone!!

All happening at Lords!

England 3 down now. Bowlers starting to hit their strides. If the pitch fastens up a bit we could run through them here.

MAke it 3...

Just listened to Boycott saying that it was England who didn't want referrals/appeals this series but SA was okay with using it. So first time will be trialed in Ind-SL
