What's new

England v South Africa l 1st Test l Lords l 10/7/08

Prince 101 out ct behind off Sidebottom
SA 245-9 after 90.5 overs - trails by 348

Pietersen in to ball because of light and he gets Steyn ct at midoff
SA 247 all out - trail by 346

SAF 247-all out

KP gets the last wicket of Steyn :P

And as expected, follow-on enforced

possiblity of spinners opening the bowling or no more play today if Vaughan wants the fast bowlers. There are probably 5 overs left today

They are mentioning the SL match at Lord's, where they managed to draw the game.

Can SAF do it?

umpires are out checking the light and they say "aajao thori aur kirkit khelain"

What exactly was the upside of that shot from Steyn?

Even if he hit a 6 the runs were inconsequential at that point. Getting out means your openers have to go out there again.

I am with England all the way here and hope South Africa lose by their biggest margin of defeat e.g. Innings and 300 runs or something
well i with chum :miandad

Amazing first 3 days but SA in the recent past have performed below par in the 1st test match before fighting back in the next 2.

A thoroughly professional team effort from England, whose bowlers looked every bit as good in this innings as they have been looking in the last few Tests against New Zealand. The South African batsmen were asked constant questions, and were never allowed to settle or get into their comfort zone, which is the key to bowling a team out cheaply on what still looks a reasonable batting track. There was a total absence of the holes and weaknesses that were a fairly consistent feature of the England attack from Multan in 2005 until the dropping of Harmison after the Hamilton Test this year. Even the fielding continues to improve.

Despite Prince's heroics today, South Africa will need something special, and probably a fair bit of help from the weather if they're to save this game.

Good post Harv. There was no weak link in the England bowling today, and in the next test it'll be even better when Fred comes back for Colly.

Anderson going for maiden overs now :))

This is test cricket mate!

Well the pitch is flat and has always been, just that South Africa couldn't get a decent partnership going yesterday at the top of the order and England bowled well to them.

SA's run-rate means they're still in big trouble. At the current rate, they won't even have a lead until after Tea tomorrow, and with Kallis and Amla to come and the precariousness of their position, they're unlikely to try and increase it. Long way to go yet; patience, England - patience.

It is nevertheless a flattie and shall be hard-work for England.

Monty decides to do some bhangra

ENG were so scared of SAF bowlers, that they prepared a flat pitch :P

Good atmosphere being generated by the crowd - prompted on by the Eng players.

Monty goes close - LBW shou - no shot played.

And edge through vacant 1st slip.

'All happening...' so the saying goes!

Trying to get some reverse swing with this ball

Dont let Hair see this ball, he might think someone tamperred with it :P

Another session without a wicket - great fightback by the Saffers. Still some way to safety, but they needed this start, at the least.

Smith 71 - McKenzie 50
SA 128-0 after 60 overs - trails by 218
33 overs left today

tickets for last session available for 15 pounds

That inside edge of McKenzie made me sick. How lucky the South African's have been in their 2nd innings !!

McKenzie on 69 off 250 balls
new ball due in 8 overs
SA 173-0 after 72 overs - trails by 173
23 overs remaining today

New ball might give some wkts to ENG, well have to wait and see!

Smith @ 97

McKenzie hits two fours in the over. Looks like a 350 ball century won't happen

Less than a hour to play for today: will ENG manage to get at least 1 wkt?

20 pound tickets available for tomorrow. 10 pounds (concession for seniors) also available. Under 16 for free. cash only

Tickets for tomorrow. £20 for adults, £10 for concessions, free for Under-16s, cash only at the North Gate. Be there, or be square - cricinfo

please come watch cricket with me tomorrow :)

all this debate about who should repalce who when freddies fit, but freddy needs more overs under his belt he lacks the penetration of 2-3 years ago, and another thing broad, he really has to work on his bowling i think, he looks more dangerous with the bat than his bowling he lacks pace and he doesnt look like a wicket taker dispite all the media hype

Makes me recall an interesting story.

The Beatles, when thinking of a name for their band, first came up with "The Crickets" but found out that some other band had beaten them to it. They had to settle for "The Beatles". Didn't do too badly though.

Verdict:

A remarkable fightback by Smith and McKenzie, who rode their luck against some determined English bowling. England stuck to their task well, but weren't helped by the batsman-friendly atmospheric conditions, and the pitch, which looked even flatter than on previous days. The seamers, especially Sidebottom, looked extremely tired towards the end and didn't make best use of the second new ball.

South Africa's slow scoring rate today means they can't now win this game (a prospect that was always very remote), but they stand an excellent chance of saving it. England need quick wickets tomorrow, and after two long days in the field, that is asking a lot of the seamers.

Monty Panesar looks to be the key to England's victory hopes, but the odds going into the final day certainly appear to favour the draw.

I think the English made a mistake here. They should have batted for some time today instead of enforcing their follow on. They needed to give some rest to their bowlers, the bowlers looked jaded to me. Besides whenever i look at this English attack, i always get the feeling they are missing some 90 mph stuff, i think Flintoff or Harmison do need a look in. This bowling attack is too one dimensional for me.

Sidebottom doesnt look to strong to me. He bowls at his quickest in his first spell but slows down to 78-80 mph in his second spell and becomes a lot easier to play. Needs to work on his fitness. Broad just looks like an honest trier right now but he could also do with some pace.

I gather Sidebottom was suffering from a stiff back today. What's more, any bowling attack is going to be pretty exhausted after two long days in the field in a Test match. As for 90mph stuff, the SA bowlers' pace was down on normal, too. I suppose it's just not the kind of pitch that rewards that kind of all-out pace bowling. Had England got the rub of the green, held a couple of chances and had an umpire who was prepared to consider giving Monty LBW's when he's bowling around the wicket, it might have been a very different story. England certainly didn't bowl badly today.

If England hadn't enforced the follow on, it would only have given the bowlers 3 or 4 hours extra rest in addition to their night's sleep, and I think Michael Vaughan did the right thing by making South Africa face a few balls last night. It was all about showing positive intent.

Anderson was bowling 85+ today, but speed isnt everything here.

We saw the three 90+'ers from SAF :P

The commentators basically want a genuine waqar younis like bowler (they mentioned him also), someone who can use reverse swing.

So it has to be the (re-)inventors (:)) ) of reverse swing: flintoff or jones :P

England have to bowl South Africa out by tea and chase around 100 in the final session. I wouldn't count England out of this game just yet though in all probability they will get an early wicket only for Kallis, Amla and Prince to bore everyone to death and bat out the day at 2 runs per over.

5 mins to kick off.

1st hour will decide this - if they see off the relatively new ball in bowling-friendly conditions, SA should draw this.

Lovely day at Lords - will favourthe batsman after the 1st 30 mins or so.

A couple of wkts, and Eng are into the bowlers.

And Sidebottom is struggling with his fitness.

My verdict: DRAW
