England v Sri Lanka | 1st Test | Galle | Mar 26-30, 2012

eng will prob get bowled out for 72...lol

Not an unfair statement :))

Any chase on here (surely 250+ at this rate) will be incredibly tough. Succeeding would go some way to make up for the recent failures.

SL are practically 187 runs ahead with 6 wickets in hand. Anything over 200 will be very tough for England to chase.

But again, England has no one to blame except themselves. You cannot get steam rolled against this SL attack to say the least.

Maybe it was a fluke. They easily chased 360 in the second warm-up.

Maybe it wasn't though. Our batting in Asian tests has sucked up to now.

So Ajmal, Rehman and Hafeez will be bowling on these pitches in a couple of months time?

:)) Can't wait.

Camera shows Flower and Gooch in the dressing room.

Can we draft them into the side for the 2nd Test?

very good come back from Srilanka , can they increase their leads ? i think if they score 300 runs in this innings its gonna be Srilanka game

FTB Junior (Samaraweera is junior to Mahela) gets out to Swann.

The lead has crossed 200 now. Another 100+ runs and SL are clear favourites. The ball is already spinning too much and England will struggle against herath.

Btw which wicket in SL was reported to ICC as being very poor?

Sri Lanka effectively 209/5. In the balance with SL slight favourites.

Awful England batting but a good comeback by the English bowlers.

Good fightback by england but the 125 run lead they gave away and has pretty much cost them the game.

The game will be over tomorrow and 1-0 to sri lanka.

Balance? I cant see England chasing over 200 to be brutally honest. To many batsmen look clueless on how to play spin.

There's always a chance they could sort it out this time. 300 is the historically impossible 4th innings chase in a test match. Anything under that has often been challenged if not always chased.

I know SL have chased 300+ twice at home to win a test matches against Zim and Famously against S.A

I cant remember to many sides chasing 200+ to win test v SL in SL.

Let's hope the next two days sees the first time in a while ;-)

96 is the highest chase in Galle I think. Galle is a minefield in the 4th innings.

if lanka reach till 250-275, england can kiss their victory hopes goodbye. but still, its a funny old game.

Game On

Yet another gripping test match involving England this winter

Wickets falling in clusters once again

look at the way bell and prior got out, they're pretty clueless in these conditions imo(in the same way asian batsman get in to all sorts of tangles on seaming wickets)

england have no chance.

Mwuhahahahahahahahahahhahahaha at scorecard. So, it will take only 4 tests for England to lose number 1 position? That's not even 10 months. We stayed up there for 20 months.

Little unfair dont you think? After becoming number 1 they soon had to tour Pak and SL. While India enjoyed home series after home series.

just curious.. why do you dislike Sri Lanka?

Let me begin by saying, I don't dislike the way they play their cricket. It's few persons on the team and attitude of few players. I also dislike the way their administrator run their cricket. BCCI has always helped Lanka still instead of being friendly they usually show attitude when things aren't going their way.

mostly, I dislike them for rivalry, that 1996 WC loss still hurt. I dislike snobbish fake accent Sangakara, who whined about Indian hotels and accommodation. Mind you, I like him as a player, but as a person he is fake. He whined about SL schedule (like they don't get enough tests) as soon as we won against them and got ahead of SL in rankings. Bowling no-ball to deny 100. The world cup toss lie. The holier than thou comments by Mehala about how 'spirit of the game' he plays with, re. Thiramane's run-out.

And don't get me started on the way they run their country. Some inhumane stuff has happened few years ago.

We played NZ, SL, Bangla, SA, WI away.

And played SA, NZ and Aus. home as well. Those were hard fought series. Sure we weren't dominating but we didn't lose 3-0 first up right after getting to number 1. It took lots of hard work and effort to be that position and stayed there till we lost 8-0 recently.

But the way Media has portrayed it like we didn't deserve to be there. Blah blah and what not. Very cynical and unfair things have been said about team India post 8-0. What we faced after hard work of 20 months, England is facing that first up ... right away.

But I assure you media's tone will be different this time.

The same media is now saying England doesnt deserve it. I think its because of Australia absolute dominance when they were number 1 we expect every number 1 team to be world beaters. But this is not the case anymore.

I would blame Indian players, in particular the Indian Captain, for the loss.

Having woken up with 1.5 hrs of sleep, I am now purely surviving on coffee. Two more classes to go, and then a bit of work on a problem set... I think I'll sleep evening onwards though, and most likely wake up at 1 or 2 AM to finish the rest of my work due tomorrow. Hopefully England will have sealed the bowling by then and are batting well.

Culture shots at players, Nit picking every comments that's being said in media, 'India were pwned', How India is laughing stalk. how India doesn't deserve to play test cricket, how India is ruining test cricket by not 'WINNING', how England is the most athletic side in the world and how India is not interested in playing test cricket, how India is ruining cricket, the fake rift between players etc. etc. etc.

Read Scyld berry .. Malcolm Conn ... Sid monga ... Sharda Ugra and to some what Gideon Haigh ... and recently Filthy culture attack by Greg Chappell. I mean WTH.

You will never ever find same tone towards other teams neither in Indian media nor in UK media!

Praise your own team for doing well instead, talk about cricket!

The tone has been like: If India wins, they have problem, they will say they don't deserve it. If India loses they have even bigger problem, they will say there are doing disservice to test cricket by not playing well enough.

Heck, even people like Ranatunga doesn't hold back taking dig at indian cricket, where their own board and cricket has big hole to fill.

I seriously feel like knocking them out by upper cutting. Players are human too.

Haven't watched any of day 2 but from reading reports and the scorecard it's turning out to be a great test match.

Is the pitch so conducive to spin or was it poor batting?

If England can keep them to around 250 they have a chance of chasing this imo.

It was horrendous batting from both side in all fairness.

1st Innings, Dilshan, Sangakarra, Samaraweera and Chandimal were all example of brainfarts.

In Our innings, Trott, Strauss, Pietersen and Prior all fell to stupidity, whilst Bell was bowled by an absolute ripper of a ball.

2nd SL innings, Dilshan did again another brainfart, their other opener was bowled by an obsolute beauty by Swann, which was almost identical to the ball he bowled Imran Farhat with. Samaraweera was stupid and tried to drive a cross line slider only to get stumped, Jayawardane was caught after Swann got a huge turn on the ball.

So mostly batsman being stupid.

Agreed. I dunno if others will agree with me, but today there were only two batsmen that played actually pretty well, Bell and oddly enough Anderson. Broad and Swann has nice cameos, but were too aggressive at a time that they could have stuck around with Bell. Anderson didn't look in trouble while at the crease, and he was playing cleverly. Then again, people will call me on being a fanboy, but others who watched might tell you that only those two batted with any real sort of application today.

Thirimanne was okay but got a ripper courtesy of Graeme. Dilshan should be sacked, and Chandimal looked pretty decent, though nervous.

Thanks, so England have a good chance if they bat well.

Not sure if you read Alex Stewarts article on the BBC, he thinks England have a mental problem hangover from their experience against Ajmal. :ajmal

I'm not even joking when I say this:

Get Anderson and Strauss to open.
Cook at Number 3.

Strauss to play his normal game and Anderson to just tuk away at the new ball.
Why would we do this you ask?

We simply cannot lose Cook to the new ball. He is our best player of spin, our best player of pace bowling, mentally our strongest player and also the player the Sri Lankans fear the most. Our innings collapsed because we lost Cook to an absolute pearler of a delivery.

If Anderson goes out early, send Trott out. But only after 15+ overs have gone can we risk sending in Cook.

Pretty disappointing stuff from number 1 side. Prior can't play spin. Once again he got stuck on the back foot. He needs to use his feet.

Thats because you and the rest of Indian fans are in general insufferable cheerleaders who couldnt recognise facts beyond pure fan worship about cricket. So when you lose you cop it big time.

Woo you were there 20 months, only because you stayed at home. First real series you got flogged. We were there for 10 years sunshine :D

Why people think its bad batting unless ball is absolute ripper. Give some credit to bowlers here.

If you follow Indian cricket history and how we turned ashes in to metal (if not gold yet) then you will realize we have gotten every right to cheerlead. Indian cricket was barely getting a test in those days. We have come a long way and I appreciate and feel humble towards the players (where many players' family have come from hardship), who have worked so hard to take indian cricket on next level. You may call it cheerleading, if you like, I call it respect.

Thanks to our crap cricket media, normal fans are super fickle.

You were no1 for 10 years, good for you :P now make sure you don't fall like WI (who were number 1 for 15+ years).

how many more losses now for England to drop down to rank 2? can someone enlighten me on this??

start attacking now Lankans

got only 1 run for last 2 wickets, no point saving backs

T20, IPL, BPL etc is responsible for our emerging players, U Akmal, Chandimal, Hafeez (and many other south asian and emerging players oof other countries etc) have a brain freeze after a good start and throw away their wicket apart from a few who actually regularly play for the IPL like Kohli etc who sometimes convert
