Yep, I believe that England have never won four tests in a home Ashes series.

This will be fun. Hope Clarke and Rogers do well in their farewell Test.

Good toss for england to win, should be looking to do some early damage here.

Robert, this will make you laugh.

The Channel Nine commentators in Australia recognised Stephen Fry, Warnie boasted about his friendship with him.

Then the Sky cameras caught Trevor McDoughnut and none of the Ockers had a clue who he was!

Aussies looking to graft for once at start of an inns, a little to late as far as this series goes..

Sir Trevor is probably unknown overseas.

Anyway I would not have bowled here. It's warm and humid but I distrust the idea of bowling first.

So OZ have been able to prevent any damage so far. Must say they've exceeded my expectations.

Anybody who's ever watched Blackadder (a globally renowned export of British culture) knows who Stephen Fry is. Nobody outside the UK has ever heard of this McDonald, because look at how insignificant and localised his palmarès are:

Would an Englishman recognise the Channel 10 weatherman Tim Bailey in the crowd? Of course not. An Englishman however might recognise a much more prominent Australian, such as John Howard.

Did the Poms recognise Essendon Captain Jobe Watson?

Hmmm... Australia batting well. :mv

In before, "batting slowly in tests is not useful".

Did the Poms recognise Essendon Captain Jobe Watson?

Nope. What's Essendon?

Anyway, sedate progress for the Aussie openers. The hook trap is set for Warner. Let's see if he falls into it again.

Australia are being overly cautious as a result of the 60 all out. This is a different match, what happened before has no bearing on what will happen today.

Watchful start by Aussie openers.

Good pitch, nice bounce and carry. The Oval is one of the best wickets in the country.

Rogers' strike rate nudging a whirlwind 25.

Look what T20 has done to the test game!

The pitch has been described as "Green" and both captains wanted to bowl first on it. The Australian openers are putting on a fine partnership here.

5/29 would be a much better position

For Clarke. He wants to GTHO of cricket, ASAP.

Yeah, obviously it would have been better to score four off one ball and get out than 16 off 52.

Sure, no complaints. Rogers was 4 off 42 at one point, though, I thought that was showing a bit too much respect for the conditions.

I've liked how Warner has batted. Just one boundary in his 32 but he's kept up a good SR through running lots of twos and threes.

These type of run-rates are quite common in the UAE. England best get used to it.

Moeen is on, Australia need to be very careful and not over-attack him.

It's a trade off, right? You don't even go after the bad balls until you're set for added protection of your wicket.

Chef has given Australia first use of a track which looks chock-full of runs.

I'm making fun of CricketAnalyst matey, not you.

I have a feeling that this test is going to last all five days......

Yep, Aussies batting properly. Well done.

What on earth possessed Cook to bowl first on an Oval track? Bizarre.

BTW, I live in New South Wales. I don't know who Essendon are either. Something to do with that silly sport where you wear no sleeves.

Come on now, surely you must have heard of Essendon because of the big doping scandal?

I also know Essendon play Collingwood on Anzac Day, but AFL isn't really my thing.

I'd hardly think it was possible to live in Australia and to not have heard of Essendon this week.

I mean I'm from Perth and even I know Paul Gallen is a drug cheat

Perhaps a poor decision today, but I've been really impressed with him this series. Cook finally looks like a captain. He's grown into the role and looks more comfortable with himself. I remember last time he bowed to media pressure and started copying Clarke's funky fields, it's good that Cook has started to ignore what other people think he should be doing.

I also remember Essendon because they went unbeaten or something in the AFL around 2000?

Sir Trevor McDonald was the first black newsreader on British TV, and was spoofed on the legendary kids' show "Tiswas" by Dawn French's ex-husband Lenny Henry as "Trevor McDoughnut".

If he'd been Australian he'd have been booed by all and sundry like Adam Goodes. And we'd have gone "oh no, it's not because of his colour, it's because he offends people by being proud of his identity".

I didn't mind Warnie having Asif's dodgy habits. I minded his Goodes comments.

Nope. I take it this is an Aussie Rules team? All we hear about them is crowd racists booing a black player.

Goodes is booed for variety of reasons. Mostly to do with the team people support.

You don't live here, I wouldn't have expected you to be aware of the peptides scandal. But it was all over the news here, front page stuff, for weeks on end when the story first broke. Imagine if Manchester United are caught running a systematic, team wide doping programme; there shouldn't be a single person in the UK who wouldn't find out about it!

It's also the kind of news that NSW and QLD media would love to talk about because it makes the AFL look bad.

So yeah. Arguably in the top 4 biggest football clubs in the country and got caught out for cheating

Shane Warne " haven't seen much of Bancroft but I hear his a pretty aggressive top order batsman"

One way to throw away all the credibility you have Warney

Not on the East Coast.

It barely rated a mention in NSW and QLD. It's like a scandal in Rugby League would be completely unnoticed in London because it's only played in Yorkshire and Lancashire.

The race scandal did make a big stir over this side of the country though, because there is nothing comparable in rugby league (which is our winter football code).

If you've seen "Fire in Babylon" you will know that the Australian crowds that the West Indians encountered in 1975-76 were so outrageously racist that they galvanised the Windies into two decades of dominance born of a desire for revenge.

Not much has changed: many of my white Australian compatriots have a skewed sense of belonging and of some sort of entitlement to occupy this land. I tend to agree with an Aboriginal woman with whom I was speaking at the height of the recent Adam Goodes racism issue: white Australians like Shane Warne who defend such behaviour should be stripped on the spot of Australian nationality and instantly be deported permanently to the offshore locations in Nauru and Papua New Guinea to which they themselves send asylum seekers. I'd have buses at the stadium waiting to take the racists to the airport, never to be permitted to return.

100 partnership up

Are you watching CricketAnalyst. Tuk-tuk is useful sometimes! Maybe you should think of it in a limited overs context. One day of a test match is just like one really big ODI. You need to keep wickets in hand for the big push at the end of the day, in the death overs with the old soft ball and tired bowlers :afridi. That means taking it easy for the first 15-20 overs.

Lol you really think he is going to show himself here now. Now if Australia were to lose 2/3 wickets and their rum rate were to come down a bit more, he would blame the poor run rate for the wickets and would say "I told you so". :))

It did actually, it's just that the coverage of the peptides scandal in NSW (and presumably Queensland) focussed more on the Cronulla rugby league team, but Essendon were still given considerable coverage because it became apparent that there was something very wrong throughout Australian sport, not just one code or one club here and there in isolation.

I've not heard much about the Goodes situation (somebody called him an ape and he got mad about it?), but then I don't watch a whole lot of news, and I've been really busy with uni and TAFE work in the last month. It does seem a little extreme however to suggest deporting people because of a few throwaway comments made in bad taste. The people who are abusing Goodes wouldn't have the guts to say it to his face outside of the security of the stadium. They would not necessarily deny an Aboriginal Australian a job or something like that, just because the applicant happens to be Aboriginal (I'm not saying that some people don't do this, just that these sorts of people are unlikely to go around calling Aboriginal footballers apes). That is true racism, using somebody's racial background as a reason to deny them opportunity. Making some nasty comments is not worth getting worked up over. As an immigrant of non-white pigmentation, I have certainly experienced racism in Australia. I have been called a ****** before, I have been called a curry muncher before, etc. I don't pay that any mind at all. I would however become enraged if I was to discover that my ethnicity is being used to deny me opportunity.

From what I gather, a number of people took exception to what Goodes said about Australia Day/Invasion Day. The booing to a large extent is racist, and while most people have experienced some sort of racism here, I don't think it can compare to what Aboriginals have had to deal with. The worst was when the mother of the girl who called Goodes an ape turned around and said he should apologise to them.

Part of the Goodes thing was that.

But on the other hand it's also pretty telling that the two teams that booed him the most happened to be the two teams that Sydney won (and lost) grand finals against during his career.

Sydney is not a popular team.

And things picked up because the spear dance was interpreted as being a giant FU to opposition fans. Which is why for instance a similar dance in the Haka isn't aimed at the crowd.

So some people jumped on booing Goodes because of racism and a lot of other people jumped on because they hate Sydney and he's their most iconic player and what ever reasons they could use to justify that and when people were told that it was coming across as racist it stopped.

And anyone who watches West Coast home matches knows that for ever match over the last two decades, West Coast fans have just sat down and booed everyone on the field who doesn't play for them

Racism in Australia is a good 50 years behind New Zealand and around 40 years behind the UK. It's just shocking.

And it pervades every aspect of sport, right down to the grinding poverty in which Mitchell Johnson grew up.

It needs really, really radical action. If you compare the names of the Australian cricket team with the names of the Australian soccer team you realise that this is a spectacularly Anglo-centric sport.

I can't believe they are not still bowling two feet outside off-stump at Smith.

Ah, I didn't know that. Australia/Invasion Day is a very sensitive subject. Goodes, as a guy in the public eye, should have been a little more cautious in passing comments about that. It's sad but unfortunately true. While people may not have issues with Aboriginals in general, they will definitely have an issue against somebody slamming the traditional national day. For what it's worth I do side with the Invasion Day camp, but then I'm a nobody, I can make a statement like that and not have it come back to bite me. For somebody like Goodes, instead of saying "I think Jan 26 is Invasion Day", it would be better to say something like "I think we should have a different national day".

Might also tell you that soccer is dominated by small ethnic groups and the children of immigrants?

And that cricket is a sport which people are often introduced to by their fathers/grandfathers/uncles?

Australian Football is the only sport in the country that has demographics* that resemble Australian demographics.

*Ignoring the lack of NSW and QLDers and the proportional over representation of indigenous Australians

Goodes backs Australia Day to remain as our national day and to still be called Australia Day.

Clarke gets a standing ovation and a guard of honour from the England team. Classy stuff, hope he makes some runs.

Clarke probably got a better reception here than he would have in Australia

Clarke playing in his last Test

Great gesture from English players

Yeah, all that nastiness from 18 months ago forgotten! Good to see a bit of mutual respect.

I think we'll find that players say that sort of stuff all the time and don't care once the heat of the moment is passed.

Only thing was that Clarke was caught by channel 9.

Clarke needs to score 157 in the second innings to lift his average back up to 50 for eternity.
