Second new ball is crucial and will give a good indication where this test is going.

Australia will be hoping for 500 run plus first innings whilst England will be hoping to shoot them out for under 400.

I bet the Aussie fans are cross at the application shown by their top order in a dead rubber after they were shot out for 139 and 60 in the last two first innings.

Just saw the highlights. I find it very bizzare that it took the Australian team and think tank the up to the 5th test match to understand how to actually bat in these conditions?

Warner and Rogers followed the perfect formula, for the first 15-20 overs they made sure they played close to the body, left a lot of deliveries outside the off stump, anything the swung away from them from middle to offstump they made sure they played straight and with soft hand and only put the real bad ball away.

This was the way to bat in these conditions. I am not sure who the Australian batting coach is but the guy needs to be fired after this series.

Aus openers have been good throughout. It's their middle order that's been crap.

that's the general reaction

beats another sub 100 score though

It has a lot to do with pitch also although better application has been shown this track doesn't have the juice to trouble the batsman consistently.

They finally sacked CricketAnalyst as their batting expert.

Undeserved luck there Smith

Not really, Finn wasn't good enough to get him out with a legal delivery. This is farcical by the umps too - they don't bother to check for no-balls any more unless a wicket goes down. So the bowler does not know that he is overstepping.

That shot deserved to get him dismissed.

100 test wickets for Finny! The last 20 took a good long time though......

It's like they've all turned into Watto, performing well in a dead rubber.

Was a peach of a delivery by Moeen to dismiss Johnson, was getting hammered around a bit before those two quick wickets at the end of lunch.

Australia's aim should've been 450-500 so its been a good spell after a ropey period before lunch.

481 all out. Hell of a catch from Lyth too.

No other captain would've read the game like Clarke. Brilliant change to bring on Lyon.

I'm as big a Clarke fan as anybody else, but I think you're giving him too much credit here. It's hardly a revolutionary tactic to give your spinner the over before tea.

2 overs. Stop ruining it. It's his last game, need to praise him as much as possible.

Anyway, Clarke's amazingly precise when it comes to bowling changes and grabbing the moment. Doesn't miss a beat and I thought he displayed that really well here.

i would say australia are firm favourites to win this match. Setting a 480 run first innings score usually wins you the match given you are batting first and have a potent bowling attack

Certainly the lack of praise in Australia has been pretty damming and reflective of the general opinion in Australian cricket and among the fans

It's the day for it. Nice batting wicket, clear blue skies, warm day.

Looks like its just not gonna happen for the lad. Some guys are great at domestic level but can't make the step up to internationals. Shame as he seems like a nice fella, from Yorkshire too.

So does this mean that Nick Compton makes a comeback?

Technically he's good and averages around 40 in this County season but he had a strange falling out with the England team management so hasn't got a look in since.

Having taken a blow in the 2013 Headingley Test against New Zealand, Compton was sent for a scan and, while chatting to a doctor, was informed that he probably had a cracked rib. When the scans were analysed, however, he was shown to have suffered nothing more than deep bruising and it was alleged by the team management that he had shirked his fielding duties as he did not want to put himself in the firing line. Compton was offended, words were exchanged and he has never been selected since. It is two years since the selectors even spoke to him about a possible recall.

Hmm. Interesting. They will need to find a replacement for Lyth anyway. Just is not Test standard St the moment.

Technology does it for Joe Root - the slightest of spikes on Snicko. Massive wicket.

Yep a solid 10 overs of playing out the "danger" followed by both Root and Bell going. Proving my point about defensive batting pretty well.
Indian Willow: Please have the grace to admit it this time, because if they had succeeded you would definitely have made a big case out of how smart they were to "survive the danger".

Bairstow with a wild shot and gone.

England in dire straits now, 83-5. Follow-on beckons.

And as wickets fall, Cricket Analyst comes back :). Conspicuous by his absence in the Australian innings.

English batsmen falling like pins.

Buttler playing Lyon poorly there, not a good omen for playing spin in the UAE.

84-6.

I was on a trip and didn't have the time to post. If you'll note I haven't posted anything in a few days.

Also, Australia were attacking.

Most of the comments here are illustrating the big problem I'm having in making my case.

Whenever a side succeeds it's being called responsible and defensive, even if they hit big shots and scored fast.

Conversely whenever a side fails it's being called aggressive even if they blocked practically every single ball and refused to score.

It's a self-justifying definition.

Australian batsmen were done in by the seamer friendly conditions and the movenent. But England can't handle pressure of any sort.

Did you even watch the start of the australian innings?

Oh dear, in the air and out. Ben Stokes with a dreadful heave.

England look like they just want to get home.

Why all of the Ashes Tests have been one sided this year?

The last close Ashes test was 14 matches ago, the first test in the 2013 Ashes. And even that needed a couple of freak 10th wicket partnerships from Australia in both innings.

Had Smith scored a 50-70 in the in either of the two previous matches, Australia would be on their way to an Ashes win.

Broad actually walked off after that one. Didn't expect that.
