The gulf between these 2 in tests is enormous.

The onpy reason Ponting even avg slightly higher is due to no of not outs at 29 not outs while root has 25. Not outs boost your avg to enormous levels which is why Bevan and Dhoni avg 50 in odi despite both being 40 abg batters in actuality.

But lots of 20 to 30 not out scores will boost it.

Even then root is currently avg 51.46 and will likely get past 51.85 today if he goes not out.

You have no arguments that favour you, not even bowlers arguments as The bowling lineup that ponting struggled vs india is inferior to What root has to deal with.

Game is not over. India have fought till the end in every series, their bowlers have performed miracles with the bat, they need to perform some with the ball in this session. Remember that Indians are exposed to high pressure situations regularly because of the IPL and will therefore be better equipped to cope with a tense finish than the English, particularly Root who isn't good enough to get selected for IPL.
