Their defeat in the second one-day international to England extended Pakistan's winless streak, but there were positive signs from which they will look to draw confidence heading into the third match on Tuesday, 14 May.

Pakistan's ODI record in 2019 has been poor so far. In 12 matches across three series, they have won only two and have lost nine. More worryingly, they've been winless in their last eight games, including a washout in the first ODI of the ongoing series.

With the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019 pretty much at the doorstep, Pakistan have plenty of reason for concern. But things may not be as gloomy as the numbers suggest, for they put up a remarkable fight in the second ODI in Southampton, going down by only 12 runs in a chase of a mammoth 374 against some pretty good bowling.

One of big question marks over Pakistan's readiness for the World Cup has pertained to their ability to score rapidly, but they seemed to do rather well in that department, thanks largely to Fakhar Zaman's boundary-laced 138. But even Asif Ali and Sarfaraz Ahmed scored at well over run-a-ball.

The positive signs notwithstanding, Pakistan will want to pull together in all departments to get some wins under their belt ahead of 30 May, when the World Cup gets underway.

Their job won't be easy, however, seeing as they're facing the side placed No.1 on the MRF Tyres ICC Men's ODI team rankings. England are a mighty batting unit, with various batsmen capable of stealing the show on any given day. It was Jos Buttler who did the honours in the previous game with an unbeaten 55-ball 110.

The hosts' bowling attack looks robust too, and they will be very pleased with David Willey's three-over spell in the death in Southampton, during which he took 2/17 including the big wickets of Asif Ali and Imad Wasim.

From the little evidence so far, the attack looks further threatening when Jofra Archer plays, and it will be interesting to see whether they bring him back in for the third ODI after resting him for the second. His potential World Cup call-up hinges on how he performs in this series after all.

Key players

Jos Buttler (England): The middle-order batsman has been a vital cog of England's power-hitting renaissance. He has claimed five of the 10 fastest centuries scored by English batsmen in ODI history, the latest of which was added in the previous game. He will be hungry to plunder more runs.

Hasan Ali (Pakistan): Hasan Ali has been Pakistan's most prolific ODI bowler in the last two years with 49 wickets against his name at 24.12 alongside an economy rate of 5.03. He hasn't really left his mark in his two international bowling innings on this tour: he took 1/42 in the T20I and then followed that up with 1/81 in the second ODI. He will want to make a mark against the leading team in the format.

Conditions

As per forecast, the weather should be pleasant with chances of rain unlikely. Since there isn't expected to be much cloud cover, the pitch should be great for batting as is typically the case in Bristol.

Squads

England: Eoin Morgan (c), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, Tom Curran, Joe Denly, Chris Jordan, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, James Vince, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood

Pakistan: Sarfaraz Ahmed (c), Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Abid Ali, Babar Azam, Haris Sohail, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Hafeez, Imad Wasim, Yasir Shah, Hasan Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Junaid Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Amir, Asif Ali

Some bowling changes expected today. For the world cup squad if Amir becomes fit then either Junaid or Faheem will be excluded as per Inxzi. If Shadab is not declared fit for world cup then Nawaz would replace him.

This is the team I hope plays today:

Imam
Fakhar
Babar
Hafeez/Sohail (based on if Hafeez bowls)
Asif
Sarfraz
Imad
Hasan
Junaid
Shaheen
Hasnain

Bat first on a pretty flat wicket during a hot day, bowl under the cooler night and on a ground like this, with the dryness of the weather, we may end up with some reverse.

Just goes to show how much Shadab is missed.

I think Sarfraz will chicken out and bowl first again considering Pakistan nearly made it in last match.

He wouldn't trust his bowlers to defend anything Pakistan put up.

So most likely England will bat first again, unless Sarfraz has a brainwave.

And crack 400?

It's a small ground in Bristol so more hard work expected for the batsmen.

Pakistan played their first ever T20 in Bristol in 2006.

Sarfraz must breathe a sigh of relief if Butler is rested.

That's the problem with our mindset, we basically bat so we can "defend a target" for our bowlers, with this usually being a intended target of a mediocre 270-280. Whereas all the top tier teams try to bat the opposition out of the game so no matter how crap the bowling, it's going to be incredibly difficult to chase down.

I remember some PP'ers doing cartwheels of joy when were setting a target of 280 in the UAE against Australia but they chased it down every time with ease. Aim should always to be at least 320+ and this way it somewhat negates Yasir playing.

we batting fast game over already...england can chase anything !!!

Would be real test for Junaid/Hasan/Shaheen. These three seem to be the definite for WC because I don't think Amir will be able to make it due to chicken pox.

Micki Arthur took on whole Australian senior team, it is mind boggling how he has surrendered to a joke politician like Inzamam. Both are at the end of their contracts, Arthur finally needs to make decisions whichhe thinks are best for the team.

They needed to bring in Abid Ali over Imam or Haris. When we heard Amir is down with pox I knew they'll give Faheem a long run which they're doing.

PAK's both explosive players had the innings of their career last time, still PAK lost chasing, therefore not much hope here batting first, but Poms are resting Buttler and didn't pick Jofra - hope PAK makes it count.

That 2nd ODI near miss will hunt PCT for long time.

What baffles is Faheem hasn't performed with the bat and he's mediocre with the bowl.

If he plays as AR. Where are his batting performances?

If he plays as a seamer. We have much better options than him.

Need Fakhar to fire so we can put up a decent total.

Faheem useless is still playing
Why?????

Now Just hope that he don't fluke a good performance and show his true worthless worth again, short term loss but long term gain it will be if this match prove to be final nail needed to kick him out of wc squad. Never hated a pak player this much, and i don't think we have played a worse All rounder than him ever.

I wouldn't say that. Fakhar can play better. Our bowling was awful otherwise should have kept England to 350 max.

On which basis he was even selected? Had nil performance in domestic.

He was preferred over Aamir Yamin and that was the end of our merit selections.

Faheem is playing . . . . It really makes me sad . . nothing about PCT hurts me more than seeing Faheem playing . .

Faheem is playing. Well done Mickey and management. Invested in a useless person for 3 years.
They just want Faheem to perform once so they can justify his selection.

Asif needs one more good innings to justify his world cup selection and I hope he plays a good innings today.

As a batsman, he has been dining out on that fifty in the CT17 warmup v Bangladesh at Edgbaston for too long, where the boundary was 30m on one side. He is totally brainless with no idea how to construct an innings apart from a few cross batted hoicks.

Denly…

No Archer.

Pakistan should look to score at least 320 minimum.

When was the last time pak won a match?
Why are malik & hafeez chickening out to play?
What business do yasir/imam/faheem playing odis?

I think Pak have already made their mind up for Husnain to keep him in WC squad. They are undecided about Faheem, Junaid and Amir, hence the first two are playing to test them out.

So another high scoring match expected I suppose? I hope ICC really does something after the World Cup or this format will die out soon.
You are right cricket might become a batsman game only and interest will diminish in this sport further.

I wouldn't say that. Fakhar can play better. Our bowling was awful otherwise should have kept England to 350 max.

I hope he can better 138 of 106 in his lifetime again once against a top 3 side.

Expected. Now all eyes on Imam and Babar.

With Fakhar's technique he'll provide u rocket starts. But will not be consistent.

There goes the match, Fakhar keep getting out in the same fashion, No work on weakness, he gonna be more miss than hit with this technique.

I hope he can better 138 of 106 in his lifetime again once against a top 3 side.

Irrespective of chance his innings against India was a match winning one in CT17

Pitch has something in it for bowlers. Not much bounce either.

I'm expecting Imad to take full advantage of the pitch

ECB should stop being stupid and give Mark wood a chance. Better to have him and beef up the bowling attack rather than include Woakes for his supposed all-round ability.
