I really think pakistan should consider playing an extra seamer if the conditions are similar for the 3rd test.
Infact i believe they probably would have bowled england out for around 150 here if they had chosen to bowl. Abbas beat the openers 5 times out of 7 and Naseem would have been an absolute handful as well.
Thought?

Honestly, and I know this probably needs another thread, but if weather doesn’t improve then they should be flexible enough to change venue..

6 weeks of bio secure isolation for five days of cricket is absolutely unacceptable.

The weather won't allow much of the 5 days anyways so if they do play then would be better for Pakistan to have Sohail or Wahab in place of Yasir.

I've been saying it for a while that they should have stuck to OT for the first two tests and play the last one in Southampton.

But doubt that they'll now change the venue especially with England 1-0 up had they been 1-0 down then most probably to get a result they may have.

Extra seamer, yes.

But don’t bowl first - these are not conditions which only exist on Day 1 Session 1.

Just replace Fawad Alam with Faheem Ashraf or Sohail Khan. I know Faheem's returns with the bat have been woeful but I would still consider him a superior batsman to Sohail Khan, who's not terrible himself.

If there is cloud, bowl first!

I think they should have bowled first during this Test.

No more variety is better don't get fooled into whats happened.
A quality spinner is needed.

Get Shadab back in for Azhar Ali.

The bowlers were getting outrageous seam movement.
Pakistan a little unlucky here after getting the runs on the board.
If the conditions persist ill add another seamer, the spinners had their chance to win us the first test.

The forecast is rain all week and then clearing up a bit on Sat and Sun and then some more rain
A shame and pretty atypical for this time of the year, but it is what it is.
Not sure Yasir will get much of a bowl if he plays

Why?

Those conditions were still the same on Day 4.

You are only meant to bowl first if those conditions are temporary and only exist in the first session.

If there is cloud and you bat first, you can get bundled out quickly. You are already on the backseat which is a disadvantage.

It's England... there's always clouds.

Pakistan are consistently one of the worst teams in chasing so I would not back them to even chase a 150 total especially with this poor batting lineup. They couldn't even do it in UAE vs a weak team like Sri Lanka so if Pakistan get the chance to bat first, then bat first.

Not in places like Southampton.

Consider Cape Town 2011.

Australia made 284
South Africa made 96
Australia made 47
Then South Africa win it. But the point is that if the conditions are going to persist, bowling first may not help.

If this test is a draw...they have to show intent and go with 5 bowlers for final test as they need to win ..i would play faheem and shadab instead of yasir and faddy just to get the balance right but that wont happen i think

Yasir will only be dropped in our dreams lol. And probably rightly as he's still percieved as a match winner in England.

I don't see how we fit an extra seamer into the line up unless we drop Fawad and play Faheem, in which case our tail will be atrociously long and we'll never get any runs on the board.

Most probably we'll play an unchanged team for the sake of balance.

Nope. We should bat first and play our 5 best batsmen based on form. Need 5 proper bowlers though. I would bring in Imam and play Rizwan at 5. Will also get Wahab and Yasir to practice extra on batting in the nets.

1. Abid Ali
2. Shan Masood
3. Imam ul Haq
4. Babar Azam (captain)
5. Muhammad Rizwan
6. Asad Shafiq
7. Yasir Shah
8. Wahab Riaz
9. Shaheen Shah Afridi
10. Naseem Shah
11. Muhammad Abbass

Not at all. You need the extra bat in these conditions. Between the rain breaks, light breaks, lunch breaks, tea breaks, innings breaks, and umpires-feeling-like-it breaks, I feel 3 pacers will be more than enough on a low-scoring ground as they will be well rested.

The fourth pacer can only be Faheem Ashraf - there’s no one else. If he was a wicket taking option, I would play him, but the main logic to include him is simply to give rest to the top 3 pacers which they simply don’t need because of the aforementioned circumstances- particularly bad light and rain.

Your other main option is Sohail Khan, whose main strength is with the new ball after which he becomes ineffective. Since Abbas and Shaheen are more than enough for the new ball, I would avoid playing Sohail as he offers minimum utility.

Instead, I will pack 6 batsmen, 1 wk, 3 pacers, and 1 spinner. All these roles select themselves except the struggling batsmen - Azhar, Asad, Fawad in particular are glaring candidates and need to be replaced eventually in any case within this year. Better do it sooner than later. The names can be Shadab, Haider Ali, Imam ul Haq, etc.

But the core team combination must be 6-1-4 even if you are playing Asad, Azhar, and Fawad.

Yes, I would play 4 quicks sohail khan instead of fawad if weather is decent and we could benefit from yasir shah in later part however if it will be rainy throughout I would just replace yasir shah will sohail Khan and fawad with shadab.

Replace Yasir Shah with Sohail Khan & you have the perfect playing 11. IF conditions are exactly like this for the 3rd test....Sohail will easily be the highest wicket taker in the first innings.

yes play and extra pacer and shadab khan.. Drop asad shafiq and Fawad alam..

Shadab should make into the team for his batting itself... He has outperformed Azhar ali in all matches and inns played outside Asia in the last 2 years..

Play Imam ul haq at 5 and shadab at 6

May be Sohail khan as fourth seamer..

My team would for 3rd test would be

Shan
Abid
Azhar (captain cant be dropped)
Babar
Imam ul Haq
Shadab Khan
Rizwan
Sohail Khan
Shaheen
Abbas
Naseem

Will Pakistan go with same XI? Fawad should not be dropped in my opinion - needs another chance in what could be better conditions

Would be a tough call but if the conditions are same I think Faheem could come in. One of Fawad or Shafiq can make way for him. Will be tough on Fawad but, as said in another thread his career has already been pretty much destroyed so dont think either ways it can be restored much now at 34 years of age.

Highly unlikely Pak or any other team in the world will go with 5 specialist bowlers in a test in UK as some are suggesting. Also Yasir is looking in pretty good form so he isnt gonna be dropped.

Or they could go with the same xi as match was going well for Pak overall.

PAK can take all 10 seemers as long as the 11th one is Yasir. Don’t you guys watch cricket enough to learn what Yasir carries for this bowling attack? I keep my thoughts about Naseem personal, but I’ll definitely come back to praise him the day he remotely matches the hype around him.

Fawad shouldn’t have been picked to be honest. And, Asad shouldn’t be dropped either - Imam won’t do any jack than Asad here. Only change they can make is bring Shadab back at put him at 5, assigning a specialist batsman’s slot; or may be Faheem at 7. These four bowlers should stay subject to fitness, but if they want any change, it should be Sohail for Naseem.

Forecast looks much better but in England you never know when it turns upside down.

As per forecast, looks like we might get somewhere around 300 overs of play in the 3rd Test

People asking for Fahim Ashraf...I don't know what to say.

I would personally prefer Sohail Khan over him. Sohail will definitely pick up more wickets than Fahim & I'm pretty sure he will score more runs with the bat. Fahim Ashraf is so useless with the bat it's not even funny.

Thoughts on Sohail/Wahab replacing Naseem?

I know that Naseem has a much higher ceiling than both, but at present he is too raw and has not been able to seam or swing the ball as much as Abbas, Shaheen, Anderson, Broad etc. We need experience for the must-win 3rd test and cannot experiment with Naseem who appears to be more of a hit the deck/reverse swing bowler.

My dream eleven for the match from the players that we have available right now

1. Abid
2. Imam
3. Shan
4. Babar
5. Rizwan
6. Haider
7. Shadab/Faheem
8. Yasir
9. Abbas
a. Sohail/Amir
b. Shaheen/Naseem

Personally, I know Amir is a gone case and he won't be playing but it'd be nice to have him play only in England, NZ, and South Africa. Our teenagers may be good but they are too raw and at international cricket, they won't find as many batsmen with terrible techniques that they get to find in our domestic system.

Fawad and Shafiq offer not much except Shafiq being okay in the slips. He hasn't developed an inch and has not shown any ability to take the game head on and dominate. They aren't even using Fawad's bowling so he's basically a very limited package.

Englad for some reason (and even after all the resources) is a defensive team. They go into defensive mode in field the moment they are attacked and that's why we need at least one batsman in the team who tries to attack. At the moment there's a lot of sameness to our batting. Azhar blocks, Shan blocks, Asad blocks, Fawad blocks and that's why even after playing 80/90 overs we barely cross 200 let alone 300. The moment we attack them, runs are scored and this happened at OT in the first innings, and in Southampton as well.

Time to take a punt on the the combination of Rizwan, Haider, and Shadab/Fahim to actually do that for us.

Yasir has bowled well so there's no point in talking about dropping him. Abbas has looked good as well. There's a case for Sohail, he's not the fastest of the lot and having him in the team is a risk because he doesn't really bowl well in the second innings but it's a risk worth taking now. He swings it late and if the pitch remains similar to what it was in this test, it's time to see if he can take a few wickets like he did last time. He can also slog a few at the end to add a bit of depth to our tail which at the moment is totally contributing nothing and in close matches.

Imam for Fawad, Sohail for Naseem, only changes in my view. Imam at 3, Azhar 5, Asad 6.

A bit unfair on Fawad but these conditions are tough on the best to techniques, plus I think having another playet who normally plays against the new ball would be good in these conditions. I think Sohail could be a handful on this kind of pitch.

Forecast looks a bit better but I'm afraid it's going to be another frustrating game with a lot of interruptions especially on days 1, 4 and 5.

Hope we see a low scoring game with a result.

If the weather improves then I'd bring in woods for curran to bolster the fire power in the seam attack, as for pakistan more than likely the same team as the bench strength regarding the seamers is truly shocking when a scatter gun like wahab is being touted as a starter.

1. Shan
2. Abid
3. Azhar🤦*♂️🤦*♂️
4. Babar
5. Shafiq
6. Rizwan
7. Shahdab
8. Yasir
9. Shaheen
10. Abbas
11. Naseem

I think Pakistan should go with this side. Pitch in 2nd test looked great when there was no cloud cover & I am expecting weather to be absolutely fine (in that case 2 spinners will be handy, fawad is not a good player especially in English conditions. One last chance for Azhar & Asad.

Former greats urge Pak batsmen to deliver against England

Former Pakistan cricket greats have urged the national team’s batsmen to deliver against England if they want to win the third and last Test against the hosts.

Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, batting great Muhammad Yousaf and off spin legend Saqlain Mushtaq said this during the inauguration of Gold Crest Mall DHA Phase 4 Action Step Fashion Sports International Shop. Action Step Fashion Sports CEO Haji M Qayyum, Maulana Fazl-ur-Raheem Ashrafi and Maulana M Amjad Khan were also present there.

Speaking on the occasion, former chief selector Inzamam said: “In the first Test, although the national team played well against the hosts, yet on the last day, they made some mistakes and gifted the match. The second match was completely ruined by the rain. I hope the men in green especially our batsmen will deliver and help the side level the series at 1-1.”

Muhammad Yousaf, while speaking on the occasion, said: “Only Abid Ali and Muhammad Rizwan batted well against England, but they failed to prolong their innings, which is not a good sign. Every batsman should try to stay at the crease as much as he can, as it will not only add pressure on the opponents, but also help the player get some easy runs to gather some significant runs for him as well as the team. I hope our players will surely deliver in the third Test.”

Off spin great Saqlain Mushtaq said: “I think the boys played well against hosts England, as they didn’t play international cricket for almost four months due to Covid-19 but they restarted cricket in good style and gave tough time to the English side not only in the first Test, but also played well against in the second one. Although the second Test was spoiled by rain, yet it is hoped that the boys will play well and try their best to level the series.”

Yes, Wood is definitely an established world-class Test bowler. Had he been a Pakistani, you would still be blasting our bench strength.

Sign of a good attack is the variety it has , Mark wood in a attack that consists greats like broad and Anderson will compliment each other

Anderson 85mph swing
Broad 85mph seam/bounce
Woakes 83mph swing /seam
Woods 95 mph hostility

And then on the bench archer, curran, Ollie Robinson, Ollie stones when fit, saqib mahmood in the mix ,

Pakistan bench strength regarding seamers
Sohail khan 35 year old trundler

Wahab scatter gun riaz 35 years old, correct me if I'm wrong but pakistan lack the quality in depth

Think this is probably the best possible swap. Obviously if the wicket turns out to be flat/baking sun shine, Sohail’s selection may become harder.

Azhar might score more at 5 than say Fawad at 5. This is more because Azhar at 5 means Imam at 3, which in turn means that Azhar is likely to not have to bat inside the first 30 overs lol. If it’s Azhar at 3, Fawad will be batting inside the first 30/40 overs which means meh.

Btw, have you guys seen the picture accompanying the article? Look on MY suggests he gives F all about Covid lol. Inzi’s mask is amazing.

One highly relevant statistic here.

IN ENGLAND
Imran Khan: 47 wickets in 12 Tests at 24.63
Mohammad Amir: 49 wickets in 12 Tests at 25.55

Pakistan are leaving their best player in these conditions in the pavilion. Not a hundred miles away - a hundred meters away.

The “best player” announced his retirement from Test cricket and has shown no intentions of taking his retirement back.

You might not know this, but cricket teams do not have the option of selecting retired players. Amir knew we were playing in England in 2020 but he had no hesitation in announcing his retirement.

If workload was an issue, he could have taken a temporary break from the format which would have allowed PCB to select him for this series.

If Amir wanted to play in this series he would have informed the PCB in private or publicly renounced his retirement which would have been the better option.

Amir would not have boosted our attack in any way. He would have done just okay had he played these tests. The same way Shaheen has done.

He is much better than the massively overrated Naseem and his fake hype, so he would have strengthened the attack. However, we have no ability to bat properly so we would still have lost.

I'd keep the same lineup, give Fawad another chance just to see if he has any runs in him. He's just holding Haris's spot anyway. Everyone else has been pretty good on this tour save for the two undroppables.

1.Abid Ali
2.Shan Masood
3.Azhar Ali
4.Babar Azam
5.Asad Shafiq
6.Fawad Alam
7.Mohammad Rizwan
8.Yasir Shah
9.Mohammad Abbas
10.Shaheen Afridi
11.Naseem Shah

Cannot change captain mid series! You made the mistake of removing Sarfaraz and let’s not compound that mistake by creating further uncertainty in what will be a critical Test in the context of this series.

I will be disappointed if our normal 3 quicks don't start.
There is no reason not to. Let's think medium term for a change.
I also think shadab needs to be part of this line up at 7 moving forward.
We are going to need people who can move a game forward in this test match and he proved with that partnership in innings 1.

Abid Ali's streaky 50 in the last game is going to cost Pakistan dearly.

Azhar Ali should open (with Masood) and bunt the new ball as he did in the last innings. Doesn't matter if he ends up scoring 20(75). Just move everyone up by one position and play Shadab at 7.

Haris?

Haris Sohail?

51 runs in 8 innings, average 6.37

I have to say, Fawad Alam is a pretty good stand-in for Haris Sohail.

Fawad scored 0 at Southampton.

Whereas Haris averaged 6.37 in Australia.

So a like-for-like replacement.

It reminds me of the great writer Martin Johnson writing on the 1987 World Cup.

England's Chairman of Selectors had promised that Derek Pringle would be "a banker with bat and ball". After his first performance, Johnson queried whether he had got a letter wrong!

Play lost to poor weather and bad light during the third Test between England and Pakistan could be made up with earlier start times on subsequent days.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is considering its options after criticism over the amount of time lost during the drawn second Test.

Play in the third Test, at the Ageas Bowl, is scheduled to start at 11:00 BST on Friday.

But an idea being discussed is to start some days at 10:30 if needed.

The ECB has the option to be more flexible with start times as there are no security and safety issues with admitting fans, with the series being played behind closed doors under restrictions resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.

Only a day and a half's play was possible in Southampton as the second Test ended in a draw on Monday, with bad light and rain to blame.

England captain Joe Root said on Monday that the issue "needs to be addressed", suggesting the authorities could consider using a brighter red ball, bringing forward the start time and improving floodlights.

"It is something that needs looking at higher up the chain," he said.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan suggested that the International Cricket Council (ICC) - the world governing body - also needed to get involved, telling BBC Sport: "It's not a good look when so much money has been pumped into Test matches.

"It's becoming annoying for everyone involved. The ICC needs to look at what's happening here.

"If it means playing with the pink ball because of the light issue in England, then do that. If it means players stay out longer, the protocols for umpires has to change, then do that."

England lead 1-0 in the three-match series.

It looks like we'll have another 150-200 over game. I would treat this as an experimental game.

Give Babar the captaincy - see how he responds. And 'rest' Azhar, Asad, Yasir, Shan, Abbas - bring in Imam, Sohail, Haider, etal. Its going to be a washout anyway

England would embrace a 10.30am start time for this week's third Test against Pakistan to limit the number of overs lost to bad light and rain, says men's head coach Chris Silverwood.

Only 134.3 overs of play was possible in the drawn second Test at the Ageas Bowl due to poor weather and gloomy skies, and the forecast remains unsettled for the series finale, which begins on Sky Sports Cricket on Friday.

England captain Joe Root suggested earlier this week starting the day's play half-an-hour earlier than the scheduled 11am could help make up time lost during the Test.

While Silverwood confirmed he has had "no official word" it would happen, he gave the idea his full support, especially given the series is being played behind closed doors.

"In my opinion it will probably be a good idea," he said. "I know there is chat around it so we'll just wait to see what they [the ECB] come back with.

"But there would be no complaints from us should it happen. We are all here anyway. It's not like any of us are travelling so it wouldn't be very hard to make it happen.

"If there were spectators in, you'd feel for them as well - the sense of frustration that you get when people have paid money to go and watch cricket.

"If it got out there that we were starting half-an-hour earlier then people would probably make an effort to get in half-an-hour earlier."

Sky Sports has invited the ICC to join Sky Sports Cricket and comment on this issue but the ICC has declined that offer.

Apart from the first day, the weather does not look too bad. We should get at least four full days and will probably be able to make up lost time.
First day will have extremely strong winds sweeping through — not sure which is better — to bat first or bowl (if we win the toss) given weather on first day and then expected sun for the next four days.

This made me chuckle

I m very excited to see fawad do his dance on the pitche. It's pure comedy.I hope they don't drop him and he will surely fail again without any doubt.

There won't be much play judging from the weather forecast. What idiots arranged for this series to be played in August. What a shambles. Now please stop all this give Fawad a chance rubbish, he is not international class.

Can we please get our slip cordon sorted in this Test ?

We MUST win this Test to draw the series so I don't care if one or two fielders bust a finger getting too close - it's better than allowing catches to fall short.

There's barely any rain forecast at all and August is statistically as dry as any other month of the year...

If we dropped everyone who struggles in Australia we wouldn't have much of a team lol. I think he's still the most talented batsmen we have not named Babar

The forecast looks much better then it did a few days ago, we should always bat 1st to set scores, we struggle when we have to chase a 1st innings

Moving ball Harris is absolutely fine. Bouncing ball is a different story

This team is rubbish due to a few oldies, but I would bring in Imam for Fawad realistically.

Hearing he might FINALLY get dropped, for Shadab.

Would be a monumental event, I’ll believe it when I see it.

Two problems:

1. Shafiq scores on average an extra 36 runs per match compared with Azhar.

2. Shafiq is one of the few competent slip catchers.

Shafiq should be out soon, but Azhar should be out tomorrow.

Going with unchanged team may not be a bad option for Pakistan. England may bring in Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer.

I hope Pakistan replaces Asad Shafiq with Sadab Khan or some seamer-allrounder. If their batting can post 350+ in their first innings and if they field aggressiively they can win the match with the bowling. Let us hope for a well-managed aggressive play.

Ollie Pope blogs on how England plan to leave the bubble with a bang - and a series win - after playing darts during the frustrating weather interruptions at the Ageas Bowl...

The end of bubble-life is in sight so it's time for one last push.

The third Test looks likely to be our last Test this year so there's extra motivation to put another win on the board, especially after losing so much time to bad light and rain in the last game.

Our Old Trafford victory feels an age away after the frustrations of the last week.

Thankfully our hotel here at the Ageas Bowl is just across the ground from the changing rooms so when the weather did interrupt play we were able to go back to our rooms and switch off.

The players are 100 per cent keen to support any idea that helps us play as much cricket as possible when conditions are bearable, so there's plenty to discuss.

I don't regard batting in bad light against the Dukes ball as the biggest challenge in the game because of the white sightscreen, although it does make facing bowling that is consistently above 90mph more difficult.

Rather, I find it a little bit harder in the field to pick up the ball - for example if you're stood at backward point and the ball is slashed at you. Every now and again you just lose the ball completely.

The umpires were following protocols in the last Test and they've got to make decisions that are safe for the players, so I don't envy them.

One school of thought is to introduce a lighter-coloured ball when the light does deteriorate, or to even play the whole game with a pinker ball.

It's something we've spoken about as a team a little bit, in particular how the pink ball can react completely differently off the surface in comparison to the Dukes depending on conditions.

I missed the two Championship matches that Surrey played with the pink ball in 2017 but one observation from those games, and the day-night Tests that have been played, was how much the pink ball nipped around at the start of play and again when the lights came on in the evening.

In between, especially if the sun was out, it didn't really move off the straight, placing a greater emphasis on tactical declarations.

From a personal point of view I feel like I'm getting back to my best with the bat - I found a bit of momentum at the end of last series and the start of this one.

We all feel very fortunate to be playing this series given how 2020 has panned out so far.

I was sat with Dom Sibley the other day and we were chatting about the summer saying, 'it would have been amazing to play our first home series in front of packed crowds every day' but hopefully we'll have that in the years to come.

Now's the time when we've got to do everything that we can to help keep the game up and running and protect it for the future.

Naturally Sibley's run out of Shaheen Afridi 'happened' to come up in conversation!

He had a few issues with his throwing during some of the warm-ups in South Africa, which is why we were all laughing after the wicket because he said 'That's the first one I've thrown straight in months'!

Sibley was pretty chuffed with it, as we all were to be honest because when you get a run out like that on a pretty tough pitch it feels like a real bonus.

It was good to see Woody helping out with the kids' coaching clinic on Sky Sports during the Test as well - and it gave us a bit of time away from him!

Woody's a great guy and he loves giving advice, so he was a natural when it came to looking at the clips, and we all enjoyed watching him on the big screens.

Now it's time to crank up the intensity in training ahead of the final Test, our last in this bubble.

There are plenty of things I'm looking forward to once I'm allowed out but seeing my dogs, catching up with friends (socially-distanced if needs be) and going out for a morning stroll for a coffee top the list. They'd feel all the sweeter off the back of a series win.

Mohammad Abbas gears up for third Test

Southampton, 20 August 2020: When the England and Pakistan players walked out for the last day’s play at the Ageas Bowl, Southampton, on Monday, batsmen were expected to have edge over bowlers as the sun shone brightly.

Over the course of the 38.1 overs bowled, Mohammad Abbas exhibited why he was considered the key weapon for the tourists’ on this tour. The right-arm pacer bowled immaculate lengths and nipped the ball off the surface which kept the England batsmen on their toes as he took two wickets - Zak Crawley and Dom Sibley - for 28 runs.

The 30-year-old has the best average (15.93) and economy rate (2.34) for a bowler with more than 50 overs in England since the start of 2018 in Tests and Azhar Ali will be banking on Abbas to deliver a match winning performance to square the series.

“I stick to my strengths and assess the conditions by reading the pitch and the batsman.” Abbas told pcb.com.pk. “Though, I have had a good run in the UAE, I am enjoying the experience of bowling in England. The weather conditions here are conducive for seam bowling and the pronounced seam of the Dukes ball provides assistance to fast bowlers.”

The Pakistan new ball attack, comprising Shaheen Shah Afridi and Abbas, has troubled the England openers over the course of the three innings in the Test series. Shaheen has succeeded in removing opener Rory Burns twice in the first over (1-4 in the first innings at Old Trafford and 1-0 at the Ageas Bowl), while the hosts’ best opening partnership has stretched 11.1 overs when Burns and Dom Sibley added 22 runs in the second innings at Old Trafford before Abbas sent Burns packing.

Speaking about his partnership with Shaheen, Abbas said: “I am enjoying bowling with Shaheen. He is young and is eager to learn. During the pre-match practice sessions, we discuss about the conditions, our plans and decide who will bowl from which end. We understand that we need to take wickets with the new ball to ensure the opposition does not end up piling runs. When he takes wickets, I also try to do my bit from the other end as it was the case in the first Test.”

With what is a contender for the best delivery of the series as well as the English summer, Abbas bowled Ben Stokes, the top-ranked Test all-rounder in the opening Test with a ball that left Stokes stunned. Stokes stood out of the crease to Abbas to counter the lateral movement, but a wobbled seam delivery, from around-the-wicket, beat him all ends up to rattle his off-stump.

Abbas later revealed that Stokes’ tactics of staying well outside his crease never perturbed him as he outfoxed the England vice-captain with apparent ease. “Stokes is one of the best all-rounders in the world and he has done well for England. We had a plan for him and I worked on the angles which disturb him. I came around-the-stumps right away when he arrived at the crease.

“He had stepped out of the crease to disturb me, but that did not bother me. Whenever a batsman comes down the wicket against me, I take it as a sign that that batsman is getting disturbed by me. I bowled in good areas and got the desired seam movement, which got us his wicket.”

This is Pakistan’s third Test series in England in the last five years. They drew 2-2 in 2016 and 1-1 in 2018 in their last two outings and Abbas is looking forward to play a role in ensuring the impeccable record stays intact.

“There is certainly a regret [of losing the first Test]. We played good cricket for three-and-a-half days and England won it by playing only two hours of good cricket. We have a great record in England … I am excited for the third Test and looking forward to give a performance which will help my team level the series.”

This is how I would try to rescue a share of the series.

Depending on whether it looks like a seam or spin wicket:

1. Abid Ali
2. Imam-ul-Haq
3. Shan Masood (c)
4. Babar Azam
5. Asad Shafiq
6. Mohammad Rizwan
7. Shadab Khan
8. Mohammad Amir
9. Yasir Shah or Mohammad Abbas
10. Shaheen Shah Afridi
11. Naseem Shah

The problem lies in our batting.

We don’t have a proper top/middle/lower order.

Really hope we can replace Azhar and Asad soon.
