Having already sealed the five-match one-day international series against Pakistan, England will be keen to maintain their unbeaten record in the final ODI on Sunday, May 19.

Overview

England v Pakistan
5th ODI
Headingley, Leeds
Sunday, 19 May; 11:00am local, 10:00am GMT

England have now won five of their last seven completed ODIs. They are on song, they mean business, so far in this series against Pakistan, they've shown an ability to grind out results. They are adding meat to suggestions that they are favourites for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019.

Pakistan, meanwhile, must be wondering what they need to do different to get over the line. In all three completed matches, they have posted scores over 300, only to be outdone by England each time.

Their batting looks strong, but their bowling can do a bit better, even given the fact that the pitches so far have had plenty of assistance for batters. With high-scoring games expected in the World Cup, their bowling unit needs to step up, as does the fielding department.

Key Players

Joe Root (England): With the openers scoring a bulk of the total runs so far, Root has been left without much to do. In the few times he has got an outing, he has done well with handy knocks of 40, 43 and 36. The last time he played in Leeds, he scored a match-winning century against India, and the 28-year-old will be hoping for an encore come Sunday.

Imam-ul-Haq averages a whopping 117 in the series Imam-ul-Haq averages a whopping 117 in the series
Imam-ul-Haq (Pakistan): The visitors' biggest positive in the series has been the opener's terrific form. He is the leading run-scorer for them with 234 runs in four matches, and has the highest average (117) among all batsmen in the series. He was hurt by a Mark Wood bouncer, but he is expected to put that behind and keep batting.

Conditions

Typically overcast English conditions are expected, with a high of 19. Brief showers are forecast late in the afternoon, but that isn't expected to affect the prospects of a full match.

Squads

England: Eoin Morgan (c), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler (wk), Tom Curran, Joe Denly, Chris Jordan, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, James Vince, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood

Pakistan: Sarfaraz Ahmed (c, wk), Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Abid Ali, Babar Azam, Haris Sohail, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Hafeez, Imad Wasim, Yasir Shah, Hasan Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Junaid Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Amir, Asif Ali

They have already made their mind up about not selecting Abid Ali for WC squad unfortunately. Harris will play today in place of Imam as per Tv channels.

I can only imagine how he must feel, first being named for the wc squad and than being kicked out just like that,

Also hoping Babar plays with match awareness this time around rather than just going about it in his own fashion, Maybe Ramizs words may have had a effect on him
And bowlers utilisting the yorker more.

Gotta choose my squad in game im playing , can anyone give me quick guess what pakistans XI will be?

Leeds is a chasing ground. I can recall once SRL chased 280 sort of target without losing any wicket (or 1?) inside 40 overs!!!

This is the softest match that PAK will get and Poms might test few bowlers - if PAK chases, I back team to win today.

They should play both Haris and Abid and rest Babar. The series is dead, might as well give Abid a go so at least you can learn something.

Saj says Imam is not practicing this morning so looks unlikely to play today. Also no Haris Sohail seen during practice.

That may suggest same middle order as the last game with Malik and Hafeez, and Abid in place of imam

Abid is going back. So, no use of playing him as an opener.

Hafeez is your thrid opener for the world cup, better try him.

Hafeez
Fakhar
Babar
Sarfraz + * (needs some score, so plays at 4)
Malik
Asif
Imad
Shadab (should play atleast a game before wc)
Shaheen
Junaid
Hasnain

I dont see why hafeez, he has never worked out as a opener he is more suited to no 4 he is quite capable of attacking, (not that he is any good at it but does a better job) instead Haris could be more suited or otherwise open with babar then send haris 1 down

I really hope shadab comes in, really worried about our spin options for the worldcup in case the pitches are this flat pacers wont stand a chance

Shadab isn’t even in England, is he?

My XI:

1. Fakhar Zaman
2. Abid Ali
3. Babar Azam
4. Mohammad Hafeez
5. Asif Ali
6. Sarfaraz Ahmed (C+WK)
7. Shoaib Malik
8. Mohammad Amir (If Fit)/Junaid Khan
9. Hasan Ali
10. Mohammad Hasnain
11. Shaheen Afridi

Batting second so top order won't be able to plod along with the consolation of getting centuries unless they can keep pace with what England set.

Glad to see Abid play today!

I hope he scores a ton and mock the selectors and management.

Damn just hearing Morgan speak is like wow man these guys know exactly what they are doing they have everything planned out so well while we’re just messing around

I think we are going to see Hasnain and Shaheen bowling in tandem sharing the new ball. It would be a great sight.

Damn just hearing Morgan speak is like wow man these guys know exactly what they are doing they have everything planned out so well while we’re just messing around

Yet they fail more often then not when it really matters.

If only the game was played on laptops and paper.

Have I heard it right. Rameez saying conditions will be a little good for bowling :amir3

One guy has scored hundreds against sa,eng and has been playing for us for nearly 2 years and the other guy has scored ONE hundred against a weakened aus bowling attack in the UAE and people want the latter in the team just coz they think the former is a perchie.
It's just sad.

Guys what does this for Haris Sohail? Is he now permanently replaced by Hafeez and Malik and wont we see him playing in the wc? Or are they Just giving chances to Hafeez and Malik to prove them selves?

Bizarre line up, this team management is nuts! In what's supposed to be the last odi before the world cup, we're resting Haris and testing Abid  on top of that, playing both Hafeez and Malik.

On the other hand, barring Vince for Roy, England is playing their starting xi

Planning doesn't always work. Ct13 and ct17 are the best examples.

You guys are all under estimating England for the World Cup.

This is their first genuine team to have a shot at the title.

They need to win realistically only 2 matches to win the World Cup. Semi is a guaranteed spot. A few tosses and they are chasing and I don't see any team stopping them except India.

England have failed a lot in previous World Cups, because they weren't good enough.

This time they are.

That is Pakistanis for you lol

They've just crumbled under pressure given from people that call Imam a perchie.
Such a soft management we have. Smh.

England will go full strength today.

1 Jonny Bairstow, 2 James Vince, 3 Joe Root, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Jos Buttler (wk), 6 Ben Stokes, 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Tom Curran, 9 Chris Woakes, 10 David Willey, 11 Adil Rashid

Do you think this is their first choice XI? Don’t go by what is said in press briefing or mouthpiece at hand. They have already clean swept 3-0 so far and it’s not PAK that possible best XI will be playing against ZIM reserves, even after 3-0 in a 5 game series.

Tell them basim they think England have choked before or what not well that time they were never favourites in the past. So even if they did bad it wouldn’t have mattered. This English side is the most destructive batting side to ever play the game of cricket and they have their plans set and are even executing them quite well too this time I really hope they win the trophy as they are fully deserving

Sadly no Roy.

I hope they still manage at least 370-380!

And Abid scores a 100 ball 150. :najam

Sorry for bringing up the 92.WORLD cup but this is the best example.
They butchered us in the group stage match we were 70 odd all out. Their team should have won but they bottled it.

I don't think so as Archer & Wood are rested and I believe they will be in the starting XI with their pace. With Plunkett also not playing I think he is safe too. So, it's between T Curran, Woakes & Willey to take 2 spots and I think Willey is the most likely to miss out on WC spot and ironically initially he was the most vocal against the integration of Archer in the side & 1 regular guy missing out.

You're too optimistic. They'll bottle!

They might not win it because India and to an extent Australia have the bases covered as well but that doesn't mean they are going to bottle it.

Hard to beat an Indian top 3 of Rohit, Dhawan and Kohli with a gun bowling attack of Bumrah, Chahal etc.

And Australia is batting heavy also.

The word "choke" is used carelessly on Pakpassion.

Not winning the title does not equate to choking. They are 3 genuine contenders for the World Cup this time with West Indies and NZ as dark horses. Pakistan are in the mix if they fire, but just too inconsistent to win the World Cup and South Africa isn't ready yet.

True - may be 1975 they were favourites, simply because everyone was unknown, ODI cricket was new and only English cricketers (& foreigners in County) had vast experience of playing List A games from 1960s, they were hosts as well.

In 1979, 83, 87 - not even top 2, may be in 1983 they were in a mix after WIN; in 1992, they were probably 2nd favourites, so runners up was per but lost to wrong team. Since then, I doubt if ever Poms were among top 4 favourites.

This time it’ll take a bad day or two for them to miss the Cup.

They weren't even getting to the finals.

Wasn't it the game when they suddenly had to get 22 off 1 balls for the rain interruption?

So to say, they were better than Pakistan, they weren't even better than South Africa in semis till it rained.

Separate discussion- check my 1st post above.

I think, Poms next XII will be

Roy
Johnny
Root
Morgan
Josh
Stokes
Moeen
Curran/Woakes
Adil
Jofra
Wood

Luck is a big factor. Aus shouldn't have won the 99 world cup. But eng in 92 were much stronger than pak.

Yes, you're right, Archer and Wood are a must. Their batting though is settled whereas we're still experimenting in the last game before the WC

Australia had Mcgrath, Warne, Ponting, Gilchrist all ATG's in the making.

Add the genius of Martyn and Tom Moody as an all rounder, and why do you think Australia shouldn't have won the 99 WC?

Symonds is not even counted yet.

Is Amir still ill or they have decided to pick/drop him without giving a single game?

I am genuinely concerned about Haris Sohail now . . I have a feeling he is not going to be in the starting XI to accommodate Hafeez at 4 because Hafeez doesn't want to play at 5 or 6 . .

if that's the case, thats typical Pakistan self destruction before even stepping on to the field

Pakistan in 1999 was perhaps the best team we’ve ever had in my opinion. We were the favourites in 1999 WC.

Not that they didn't have the players to win. They shouldn't have won the semi final in 99. It should have been an easy win for sa.

I've heard they will pick him without a game, because this attack has been battered to oblivion.

Adult chicken pox, he can't play so early.

They have to go on gut and they will pick him.

Hafeez should play at 6 while Sarfraz comes in at 5. Hafeez and Malik are the only players in our team thag we can rely on when it comes to finishing a game.

Don’t want to see bowlers bowling on Bairstow’s legs for easy boundaries.

LOL those 2 matches will decide their fate as an ODI team in history. What happened to them in CT 2013, 2017 which they were also supposed to win?

I agree . . most people do! Not sure team management and Hafeez do and that's the real issue . . Our best top 6 is:

Fakhar
Imam
Babar
Haris
Sarfaraz
Hafeez

Forget discovering oil, can Pakistan discover new ball wickets ?

Hoping Abid fails today. Can't jeopardize Imam's spot

Why would you want your player to fail? If Abid can play better than Imam, then we should choose him. It’s always good if there’s competition.
