For sure it will be an interesting one. Let us stick the sample set to 100 odis. Here we go then:-

Seems like a strong team. What's the pick here on PP?

I would be inclined to drop Botham for Graeme Hick, Anderson for DeFreitas and get Neil Fairbrother in.

100 ODI sample size for England is pretty large. 50 should be fine, as evident by none of the English players have ever played 200 ODIs

Morgan form in last 2 years has been a bit weird and inconsistent, plus have a soft corner for Collingwood, otherwise you can replace Colly with Morgan.

But you can have Stokes in place of him who has bigger ceiling ability wise in LO and is among the world's best fielder of his time.

So many oldies. Feel Root and Buttler from modern era has to be there. Both have already played 115 odis and looks well on their way to become England two best ODI batter.
 
Trescothick was very good in a far more bowler friendly era - hit the ball to many parts well before the introduction of power hitting.

Agree. Artistic player to watch. Pretty underrated player. My favorite among taller batsmen.Unfortunately depression killed his international career.

I don't think Beefy and Freddie can both be in the team. Play one of them then an expert batsman or bowler instead of the other.

You have to consider the era of cricket they played. 250 was a big enough score that time.

I pretty much had same except that I used this constraint of 100 ODIs and hence a couple of names didnt made it . I feel Stokes hasn't done much to be there. His impact quotient is much higher in tests but there is not much to talk about him in LOIs.
 
Wonder why everyone is sending Botham in below Flntoff?

What about bowling?? Swann, Gough, Botham and Anderson all are better bowlers than current ones.

The batting alone is enough to carry the sub-standard bowling.

Woakes and Flintoff are two damn good pacers who can bowl extremely well at the death.

Botham is overrated in ODI’s with his dibble-dobbers that will be obliterated to the fence.

Swann had tremendous control but was too mentally fragile as evident by his retirement. I don’t want someone like that near my team.

Anderson sucks.

Gough is the one exception as he was excellent and the only shining light of England’s bowling in that dark, dark, horrendous period. I’ll replace Plunkett with Gough.

Flintoff had three ODI centuries? I had no idea.

Weird. Botham was the more skilled batsman. He had a good technique against spinners. One would think he would be better at working the spinners around in the middle overs, while Flintoff would just slog-sweep.

As I recall, when he slowed down in his later years he became a more effective ODI bowler. He tried too much variation when he was younger and quicker. The medium pace containing role in the middle overs suited him well.

If the cut off is 100 games then I can't really argue with this team. Probably remove Lamb for Morgan and that would be my side.

How can people forget Chris Broad?
The guy used to take to cleaners the likes of Akram at that time. Won many series for England. Has to be the opener alongside Trescothick

Why is Anderson in all time ODI squad when he is not considered for selection in the current ODI squad ?

Personnaly I think he should still be in the ODI squad, but that's another mater. The fact is that England didn't had outstanding ODI bowlers, so, I believe he can make it.
He is England's highest wicket taker, and he can always do a great job with the new ball.

All old English ODI players were mostly bog average. Some exceptions like Lamb et al, but again not so outright brilliant as to stake claim in all time team

Was tossup between Roy and Tresco but Roy's fearless attitude is better and Tresco had a poor away record.

Collingwood was a good player with great contributions throughout career (CB series) but frankly not enough of an impact player and loses out to Stokes on bowling front.

Second new ball seamer was biggest headache. English ODI seamers historically have equally useless records as Indian Test seamers. No decent left arm options either (except Mullally :P). Finally picked Anderson as best out of worst.
 
might aswell pick the current xi, England in the 80's/90's and early 00's were the laughing stock of ODI's.

Having said that surprised Adam Hollioake hasn't been mentioned.

Actually I picked three.

Hick was a much better ODI batter than Botham and could hold his own as a spinner. On a turning wicket I would prefer him.

DeFreitas was similar in bowling average to Anderson and could hit spectacularly in the late order - I well remember him hitting Wasim to all parts.

Flintoff has a case to be considered as an ATG all-rounder.

He averages 32 with the bat and 24 with the bowl. Phenomenal really for an all-rounder, which is why Stokes misses out from my XI.

England messed him up by batting him at 6 in tests while making poor Ramprakash open!
