Raul Jimenez: Wolves striker has surgery on fractured skull after David Luiz head clash

Wolves striker Raul Jimenez has had surgery on a fractured skull suffered in a clash of heads during his side's Premier League win at Arsenal.

Sunday's match at Emirates Stadium was in its early stages when Jimenez and Gunners defender David Luiz accidently collided at an Arsenal corner.

He was given oxygen on the pitch before being taken to hospital.

"Raul is comfortable following an operation last night," Wolves said in a statement.

"He has since seen his partner Daniela and is now resting. He will remain under observation for a few days while he begins his recovery.

"The club would like to thank the medical staff at Arsenal, the NHS paramedics, hospital staff and surgeons who, through their skill and early response, were of such help."

The game was stopped for around 10 minutes to allow Jimenez, 29, to receive treatment before he was carried off the pitch on a stretcher.

"You start hearing 'code red'," Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo said.

"It was a bad moment. What was the reaction? Panic, panic panic. You could see the faces on the team-mates. It was a serious situation. It's awful and terrible."

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says the introduction of concussion substitutes "makes sense" after David Luiz played on with blood seeping from his head bandage as Arsenal lost to Wolves.

The defender clashed heads with Wolves striker Raul Jimenez, who has since had surgery on a fractured skull.

Alan Shearer thinks "football needs to wake up" around concussion protocols.

Arsenal said protocols were followed regarding the decision to allow Luiz to play on after Sunday's incident.

'Lampard is getting a lot of things right at Chelsea' - Shearer column
Asked at a news conference whether he would be in favour of concussion substitutes, Klopp said: "At that moment I didn't think about a rule change, I was just sitting there for 10 minutes hoping that they would both get up without any issues, but that didn't happen.

"I hope Raul Jimenez is as good as possible now, I heard he had surgery. I wish him and David Luiz all the best.

"I know we have concussion protocols and I'm pretty sure Arsenal did that. I'm not sure any rule would help in that moment because the player can play on.

"But, yes, it makes sense that we can do things like this, of course."

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, who suffered a head injury in a game himself after colliding with Liverpool's Sadio Mane in 2017, is also in favour, saying: "I think all the concern and care is very important. It is a part of the body that needs special attention.

"When there is a blow to the head there should be a substitution, whether the player can continue or not. You could be feeling OK but after you could feel the consequences."

'We're talking about players' welfare here'
Former Newcastle striker Shearer, now a BBC Sport pundit, said concussion is an issue football needs to address urgently because "we are talking about life and death".

He told Match of the Day: "Football needs to get real, it needs to wake up, it needs to get serious. Not next year, next month, now. It is not acceptable, it has been going too far too long."

Sunday's match at Emirates Stadium was in its early stages when Jimenez and Gunners defender Luiz accidently collided at an Arsenal corner. The striker was given oxygen on the pitch before being taken to hospital.

Having played on for almost 40 first-half minutes, Luiz did not reappear for the start of the second half as he was was replaced by Rob Holding.

Footballers who sustain a suspected concussion, either during training or in a game, should immediately be removed from the pitch and not allowed to return until the appropriate treatment has been administered, according to Football Association guidelines.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said afterwards: "We followed the protocol to check he [Luiz] had not lost any consciousness, which he hadn't, and then some tests.

"They will continue to do some more checks on him. He was really uncomfortable and couldn't really head the ball and couldn't continue."

Shearer, though, believes action must be taken immediately to review concussion protocols to protect players.

The former England captain previously presented a BBC documentary on dementia and is aware of the risks players face from head injuries.

He said: "If David Luiz has passed all the protocols like Arsenal say he has, how on earth is he allowed back on to the pitch with a wound that is dripping down his face?

"We're talking about players' welfare here. Football's protocols allow someone who has a cut that is seeping through a bandage that has just been put on to carry on playing and then he has to go off again 20 minutes later because he can't head a ball.

"Cricket does it, the NFL does it, both codes of rugby do it - they all have better protocols. We're talking about life and death and players' careers ending.

"They're on about trialling concussion substitutes. What is there to trial? It's been going on for years. It's not acceptable.

"We've been having meeting after meeting after meeting. Why do they need to trial anything? Just do it. Do it now. If things needs changing after that, change it."

Burnley 1-1 Everton: Dominic Calvert-Lewin nets again in first ever Premier League draw between sides

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored his 11th league goal of the season as Everton drew 1-1 at Burnley in the first ever Premier League draw between the two sides.

Both teams went into the game struggling for form and points, but it was Burnley who took the lead inside three minutes through Robbie Brady's superb low strike for his first goal since December 3 2019.

Everton improved after switching to Carlo Ancelotti's preferred 4-3-3 formation following an injury to Fabian Delph, and they were rewarded as Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin linked up with the latter poking home a cross (45+3) for his 16th goal for club and country in all competitions.

Both sides lacked a cutting edge in the second period but had their chances to win it. James Rodriguez forced a flying save from Nick Pope early in the half before Chris Wood did the same against Jordan Pickford as the game drew to a close.

Burnley remain in 19th on six points, level with West Brom and a point behind 17th-placed Fulham. Everton move up one place to seventh ahead of the remaining Premier League games this weekend.

London in Covid tier three: Football, darts & rugby union hit as fans not allowed

Sporting events in London will not have fans attending from Wednesday after the UK capital was moved into the highest tier of coronavirus restrictions.

Up to 2,000 had been allowed at outdoor arenas in England after the end of the second national lockdown on 2 December.

However, a rise in infections has resulted in the move into tier three.

West Ham's match against Crystal Palace on Wednesday will be behind closed doors, as will the midweek Premier League matches at Arsenal and Fulham.

The Gunners tweeted: "We are disappointed to confirm that we are no longer able to welcome fans to Emirates Stadium for our Premier League fixture against Southampton."

Liverpool's home fixture against Tottenham will be the only midweek match to feature fans, because the city remains in tier two. The Reds, Everton, Brighton and Southampton are the only top-flight clubs that can allow up to 2,000 spectators, as it stands.

The World Darts Championship has also been affected. Organisers had planned to have 1,000 fans in attendance - as permitted indoors under tier-two guidelines - before the ruling changed.

Tuesday's opening night at Alexandra Palace will welcome spectators before the event - which concludes on 3 January - goes behind closed doors, although the government has said it will look at restrictions again on 23 December.

In rugby union, London Irish - who play at Brentford's new stadium - have confirmed tickets for their European Challenge Cup tie against Pau on Sunday have been taken off sale.

Some spectators will still be allowed to attend horse racing's King George VI Chase at Kempton Park, Surrey, on 29 December, although not if they are based in London or other tier-three areas.

'Something could be done to make it exempt'

Speaking before the announcement of London's move to tier three, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard said fans should still be allowed into stadiums when tougher coronavirus restrictions are introduced.

"I'm slightly disappointed, even though we have had fans back in tier two, it should have been a level playing field," he said.

"We have seen on the pitch the backing they give you and what it does to the game.

"I'm not telling the government what to do, but I also think we can control 2,000 fans coming into the stadium if they are coming from that tier, to keep things moving along.

"It's unfortunate to say the least."

Last week, Chelsea welcomed supporters back for the first time since March, but their next home game against West Ham on Monday, 21 December will now have no fans in attendance.

"Let's get it right, we are making it up as we are going along," added Lampard, whose team travel to Wolves - in tier three - on Tuesday night.

“That’s not to sound critical - we haven't been in this situation before. Can you control the situation? Clubs have shown that they can.

“I would like to think that something could be done to make it exempt where we can get those 2,000 fans back in, but that goes above my station. I’m just saying what I think.”

Disastrous night for Man City.

1-1 home draw against West Brom.

Slaven Bilic: West Brom manager sacked after 18 months in charge

West Brom manager Slaven Bilic has been sacked after 18 months in charge, with the club 19th in the Premier League.

The Baggies have gathered seven points from 13 league games, with eight defeats, though they earned a surprise 1-1 draw at Manchester City on Tuesday.

Assistant coaches Dean Racunica and Danilo Butorovic also depart, as does first-team coach Julian Dicks.

A club statement thanked Bilic and his coaching staff "for their efforts in achieving promotion last season".

Bilic, 52, signed a two-year contract when he took over at the The Hawthorns in June 2019, replacing Darren Moore.

He guided Albion to promotion on the final day of last season, as they finished second in the Championship.

But they have won only one Premier League match this season, beating bottom club Sheffield United 1-0 on 28 November.

It emerged after the draw at Manchester City that West Brom were considering whether to sack Bilic.

Tuesday's match was the Croat's 100th Premier League game as a manager. He led West Ham from June 2015 to November 2017, taking the club into a Europe as they finished seventh in his final full season, recording their highest placing since 2002.

Prior to that, he had led Croatia to two European Championships, with a quarter-final appearance in 2008 coming after they had knocked England out in the qualifiers.

He has also had spells in charge of Hajduk Split, Lokomotiv Moscow, Besiktas and Al-Ittihad.

Concussion substitute trials to begin from January

Football's lawmakers have approved trials for concussion substitutes from January for any league that wants them.

The new rule means permanent substitutions can be made if a player suffers a head injury, even if all replacements have already been used.

The International Football Association Board (Ifab) has approved two trials.

The first gives a team one additional change in the event of concussion, but the opponent does not get to make a change of their own to compensate.

The second, which the Football Association plans to adopt, allows for two concussion substitutes to be made by one team.

To avoid potential abuse of the rule, opposition teams will also be able to make a change at the same time.

Ifab, the body that makes and approves the laws of football, also confirmed an extension to the five-substitute rule.

It originally allowed teams to make five substitutions to help with the congested schedule after football was halted by the coronavirus pandemic.

The extension, announced after a meeting on Wednesday, applies to domestic competitions ending by 31 December 2021 and for international competitions ending by 31 July 2022.

The FA said it would introduce five substitutions from the FA Cup third round in January and chief executive Mark Bullingham said he was "surprised" that the Premier League was the only major league in Europe to use three substitutions.

It is understood the issue will be debated again at a Premier League shareholders' meeting on Thursday.

In theory it means FA Cup matches could allow 10 substitutions per team, given clubs are allowed an additional replacement in extra time and two additional substitutes for head injuries per team. But the practical use of the new rules is still still being discussed by Ifab and FA officials.

Concussion subs trials a 'long time coming'

The FA also said it welcomed the approval of an "additional permanent head-injury substitute" and would implement the trials "at the earliest practical opportunity" this season in the Women's FA Cup, the Women's Super League and Women's Championship as well as the FA Cup.

And the Scottish FA said it would apply to "introduce the trial in the Scottish Cup at the earliest possible opportunity". The first round of the 2020-21 competition starts on 26 December.

The Scottish FA's chief medical consultant said that would "in turn provide invaluable data to inform a wider implementation plan for Scottish football".

John Stiles, whose World Cup-winning father Nobby died in October, having had dementia and prostate cancer, has been critical of the way that football has dealt with head traumas and injuries.

He referred to the incident in which Wolves striker Raul Jimenez suffered a fractured skull in a clash of heads with Arsenal defender David Luiz during a Premier League match at Emirates Stadium on 29 November.

Brazil centre-back Luiz played on with a bandage wrapped around his head before being substituted at half-time. Arsenal said protocols were followed regarding the decision.

Stiles said of the trials: "It's been a long time coming. I think there's been a general reluctance from football in general, particularly within the FA, to acknowledge there's even a problem, and I don't think they've done enough or acted quickly enough.

"And it takes a horrific incident like the one involving Luiz and Jimenez to make them actually do something."

The Premier League is also thought to be in favour of the new law but any change to protocol in the top flight is subject to a vote by clubs, who meet on Thursday.

Concussion substitutes were set to be introduced at the football competitions of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics before the Games were postponed until 2021 because of coronavirus.

The ability to gather a more accurate diagnosis of head injuries has been in the spotlight after several members of England's 1966 World Cup-winning team were diagnosed with dementia.

Stiles and Jack Charlton, who both died earlier this year, had dementia, while Sir Bobby Charlton's family recently revealed he had been diagnosed with the disease.

Former Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen also recently explained how he had felt the effects of a concussion he sustained playing for Spurs for the following nine months.

Brain injury charity Headway says that additional permanent substitutes, rather than temporary replacements as seen in rugby union, may mean that very little changes.

Headway chief executive Peter McCabe said: "Rather than celebrating this development, we're left to question what difference this will actually make.

"The key questions are, how will players be assessed for suspected concussion, and how will decisions be made about whether they should be permanently removed?

"If decisions continue to be made in the same way, it is very hard to see how player welfare will be improved."

Premier League clubs reject five substitutes for third time but approve concussion replacements

Premier League clubs have voted against allowing teams to make five substitutions per match for a third time at a shareholders' meeting on Thursday.

A number of managers have called for the top flight to adopt the change, with Jurgen Klopp calling it a "necessity" and Pep Guardiola labelling the current three substitute limit a "disaster".

But the proposal has once again failed to meet the threshold of 14 votes in favour at a meeting of the 20 clubs. Instead, teams will be permitted to name nine players on the bench, up from the previous seven.

However, the clubs have voted to introduce permanent concussion substitutions, with a maximum of two per team each match.

Bielsa is so overrated ...if there is a game I predicted a battering in it’s this one ...all out attack against the best counter attack side in the league ...any other coach would be called naive and stupid...but Bielsa is brave lol ...

Easy for Chelsea as they beat West Ham 3-0 and move up to 5th in the table.

Fulham boss Scott Parker will not take charge of his team's Boxing Day game with Southampton after someone in his household tested positive for Covid-19.

Parker, 40, tested negative but has been self-isolating this week.

Assistant manager Stuart Gray and first-team coach Matt Wells will take charge of the team on Saturday.
