Hussain's comments come after two most recent India debutants in pacer Prasidh Krishna and all-rounder Krunal Pandya had a game to remember in the first ODI against England in Pune on Tuesday

Nasser Hussain is immensely impressed with India's long list of debutants that have arrived and made a mark instantaneously. Hussain's comments came after two most recent debutants in pacer Prasidh Krishna and all-rounder Krunal Pandya had a game to remember in the first ODI against England in Pune on Tuesday. Krunal struck a fifty – the fastest on ODI debut – while Krishna returned 4/54 as India won the contest by 66 runs.

"Every single debutant they bring in, puts in a performance… whether it’s Prasidh, Krunal Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan… the list is long," Hussain said on Sky Sports.

Earlier in the T20I leg, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan made their India debuts, scoring fifties in their first outing as batsmen. Before that, during the Australian tour, debutants Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur scored half-centuries and took a three-wicket-haul each to contribute towards a famous win for India in Brisbane.

Hussain looked back at England's performance, believing they could have done with someone like Joe Root in the middle order to provide a sense of calmness to the batting. Chasing 318 to win, England were racing along at 135/0 in the 15th over before fall of wickets hurt their chase and the tourists eventually fell short. Hussain reckons Root, who was not named in England's ODI squad, would have been ideal in such a scenario.

"England will look at themselves – 135/0 in 14 overs and 2 balls chasing that score. Did they need to be a little bit smarter? How much did they miss Joe Root… just to come in and knock it around and before you look at it, Root often is 40 off 50 balls and has soaked up pressure," the former England captain added," Hussain added.

England's ploy of going after he bowling from the beginning is a tactic that has given them fruitful results – including winning the 2019 World Cup. However, Hussain feels the think tank could have been a little more careful in deciphering such chases.

"England have this way of going hard… they showed in the last World Cup. There are times they can just sit in and be smart. You don’t win that low-scoring World Cup without having that capability, but I just don’t think they were smart enough today. Hardik Pandya probably wouldn’t have bowled and Kuldeep was really struggling," the former England captain pointed out.

"So they had effectively four and a half bowlers and you had to force Virat to bowl Hardik Pandya and they didn’t because they kept losing wickets and Kuldeep could just come on at the end when the game was already lost."

India are a serious force. Every new cricketer off the conveyer belt is hitting the ground running, they've tapped into the talent so well it seems.

This was a trend with Australian team also, post 1999 WC for a decade or so. Whoever they brought in took to internationals like a duck to water

We have a total count of 30 cricketers in our scheme of things in LOIs right now.

Most are pretty well versed in domestics..Washi in tests was due to injury of others..

Krunal is 30 years old so is SKY , Shardul 29. Siraj 27. no one is a “youngster” as such..which was said by Inzi.

Ishan, Gill already have played a lot of domestic cricket due to them being part of U-19 setups..

I did read what Inzi said but not all are youngsters or off the U-19.. most of lot of domestic experience.. least probably is Pant

I guess the point being made is that every debutant (not every youngster) comes with a battle-hardened experience and mindset.

What’s the use getting a real 17 yr old who doesn’t know which end of the bat to hold when you can get a 30 yr old SKY:

Yes exactly, we have started putting players in their mid to late 20s into the national side, with very good domestic experience and performances behind them. This leads to them not being overawed on the big occassion.

This is why its imperative the domestic system in places like pakistan is of a high high standard and that players play it

Look at abdullah He shouldve played a couple of seasons of fc cricket by now

Our fringe players come into the pakistan team having played more t20s than fc or list a cricket combined and sink rather than swim because the gap is so huge

I hear many people on this message board downplay IPL for one reason or the other but the fact is that is where the best cricket and the best cricket players are currently playing and Indian cricket is the biggest beneficiary of it. Their top 60-80 crickets in the country are playing alongside best players from around the world, under the supervision of the best coaches in the world, and supplemented with the best support staff in the world. Batsmen are learning new ways to improve their power hitting and adding new shots to their game. Bowlers are learning how to bowl in high pressure situations and add more deliveries to their repertoire. Because there is such a tough competition for the spots in IPL team, players that make it to Indian team are already a final product and ready to produce in International cricket.

Hats off to these Indian debutants, very First Class stuff from them.

The newcomers are playing well but things are not set up for India to dominate like Australia did in the 90s and 2000s.

Kohli Sharma and other older players will need to be replaced which will be tough it’s unlikely India can dominate world cricket this decade but they should remain a decent team challenging for the no 1 spot in the rankings.

Credit to the BCCI, they have found a way to ensure players get lots of domestic experience and also they have a good understanding of the game .

Great post.

IPL is a wonderful platform and on par with a tournament like WT20. 99% of the best players in the world play in it and the intensity of the competition is amazing.

Young Indian players are playing under serious pressure in front of packed crowds against world class players and are supported by top notch coaches and support.

A young Indian batsman playing Delhi Capitals is going to get coached by Ponting and will face the likes of Archer, Cummins, Boult etc. before making his international debut. He is naturally going to settle in international cricket seamlessly and not get intimidated by the platform.

Core cricket skills are learned in Indian FC cricket but IPL shapes their mentality and their capacity to absorb pressure in international cricket.

PSL can have a similar impact on Pakistan cricket but the problem is that PSL’s pockets are not deep enough to persuade the top players in the world to participate especially when it is scheduled right before IPL.

The top IPL stars are not going to risk missing IPL due to injury by participating in PSL.

I agree this is a top post.

None of this will matter if we can't win an ICC trophy under Kohli :inti
This. It's absolutely shameful for us that we are yet to win a single ICC trophy under Kohli. Hope we win at least test championship later this year.

Yeah. We have underperformed in ICC events for sure. 3 world cups and WTC in coming years is last chance for this batch to achieve something concrete. I expect at least 2 of 4 trophies.

It will be shameful if we didn't won the WT20 this year and WC in 2023 as both will be in India.

WT20 is a lottery. You cant rely on any team to be favourites. WC 2023 will be a test of their mettle

Completely agree. T20 is very unpredictable format and any average player can change the result of game within 10-20 balls on his day.
It would be more disappointing if we lose in test championship final or 2023 WC.

If T20 is an unpredictable format then how come the same couple of teams dominate IPL?

Predict result if India and Bangladesh play 10 test match and 10 T20s.
My guess India will win all 10 test match but may lose 1 or 2 T20.
Longer the format, higher the chances of better team winning.

Exactly. Individual brilliance over a very short span of time will work in T20 matches. In a test it takes team effort.

Why ?

Messi hasnt wont a single WC or even the Confeds cup . Yet he is the GOAT of all times ...

Same for CR7 ( only one Euro no world cup)

Cos you are comparing individuals with a team.

Last 5 years, India as a team has severely underachieved whenever it matters in LOIs

Things have certainly changed post 2020. We are talking about debutants performances. These guys will go on to become senior players one day and the investment will definitely pay off.
