The pitches in Australia in 2019 were much flatter than they are now, with little to no seam movement to speak of. Misbah was off his rocker selecting three youngsters with barely any FC experience for Australia, simply because they had "pace", but I highly doubt Abbas would have done any better even if he played both matches and was at full fitness. Its also unfair to paint Misbah in this light considering he is the one who is the one who first started backing Abbas-like hardworking, seam bowlers in the UAE that were coming off good FC performances.
I don’t know where to start
1. Starc averaged 17 in that series, and Hazlewood came in at 23, both showcasing masterful swing and seam. Extracting movement on those tracks is a skill, and frankly, the Pakistani teenagers were set up to fail. Not their fault.
2. In 2018 and 2021, it was India’s pacers who sealed the series victories in Australia. Saini, Siraj, Thakur, and Natarajan weren’t lightning quick, but their tighter lines and greater skill turned the tide in India’s favor.
3. While it’s all conjecture, bowlers like Mohammad Abbas and Mir Hamza, known for their precision and discipline, would have been far better suited to Australian conditions than any erratic teenagers.
4. On flat Aussie pitches, tighter, more disciplined bowlers always outperform wayward speedsters. In fact, sheer pace without control is a liability on such surfaces. Misbah and Waqar should have been sacked for making brainless decisions.
