RAWALPINDI/ LAHORE:

Protests erupted in multiple cities across Pakistan after authorities detained Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) chief Sahibzada Saad Hussain Rizvi in Lahore on Monday.

According to a TLP spokesperson, Rizvi was arrested from Punjab capital’s Iqbal Town area, where he had gone to attend a funeral.

Saad Rizvi is the son of the firebrand cleric, and previous head of the TLP, Khadim Hussain Rizvi, who died in November last year.

Police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse thousands of protesters who blocked streets and intersections in Lahore.

The arrest comes a day after TLP central council had warned the government that if did not expel the French ambassador from the country, they would march on Islamabad from Lahore on April 20.

The party spokesperson condemned the arrest of Rizvi, saying “coercive tactics” being used by the government would not dent the spirits of TLP and the party would proceed with the long march if the government failed to implement the agreement.

In a video released on social media, the deputy head of TLP, Syed Zaheer-ul-Hasan Shah, said Rizvi's arrest meant the government had violated an agreement to expel the French diplomat.

TLP leaders called upon its workers and activists to stage protests and sit-ins across the country, which led to massive traffic jams in major cities of the country including Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Rawalpindi and others.

Meanwhile, the federal government has also called Rangers to maintain law and order in the federal capital.

Hundreds of TLP workers are protesting in the twin cities since Monday afternoon and blocked various highways and roads with burning tires.

Police in the twin cities have also been directed to arrest agitating TLP workers, who are trying to disrupt the law and order.

A heavy contingent of police has been deployed at all major government and private buildings including on major highways.

Dozens arrested in Karachi

Police and other law enforcement agencies arrested dozens of protesters trying to sabotage the law and order and forcing shops to shut in Karachi.

Due to protests at multiple locations in the city, Karachi witnessed one of its worst traffic jams causing immense difficulties to the commuters to reach their destinations.

Bumper-to-bumper traffic was witnessed on all major throughways and roads of the city while traffic authorities and law enforcement agencies failed to control the situation.

Thousands of vehicles were stranded during the worst traffic jams and many vehicles ran out of fuel.

Earlier, sources had told The Express Tribune that the government had decided to table a resolution, regarding the demands of TLP, including the expulsion of French diplomat, in parliament before Eidul Fitr.

The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan and attended by Law Minister Farogh Naseem, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid, Religious Affairs Minister Noorul Haq Qadri and other relevant senior officials.

Sources said that the meeting discussed the strategy for implementing the agreement reached with the TLP. It was also decided that other parties would be contacted on the issue of French envoy’s deportation. The meeting decided to bring the resolution in parliament before Eid.

The TLP had announced a sit-in in Islamabad to press for its demands. But on February 10, a government committee headed by Religious Affairs Minister Qadri assured the religious party that it would seek parliamentary approval on its demands by April 20.

The TLP has been demanding expulsion of the French ambassador over publication of blasphemous caricatures.

In November last year, the party staged a sit-in in Rawalpindi, which ended after an agreement was reached with the government.

Absolutely unnecessary to arrest Hafiz Saad

IK asking for trouble

Time and again they’ve underestimated TLP

This violent bunch of bloodthirsty monsters need to be dealt with in a strict manner. They are only good for beating up people and smashing cars and shops. The government needs to stop kowtowing to the whims of these miscreants.

Another own goal by this Government, i fear it can escalate to something very ugly.

These message just portray that you support the TLP, govt needs to cut down, eliminate the TLP and this self claimed leader swiftly.

I wonder where do the protesters hide and show no outrage when some animal is caught molesting kids.

These "Mullahs" are using Islam to push their political agendas.

According to Imran Khan, the Hazara's were black mailers so what are TLP then Khan Saab? Apne log?

More than 100 supporters were arrested as Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) ‘s protest entered the second day.

Amid sporadic violent clashes between protestors and law enforcement agencies, all major arteries of the country remained blocked on Tuesday.

As the protests continue, the federal government deployed Rangers at Islamabad’s Faizabad Bridge, IJP Road and Dhokri Chowk.

The paramilitary troops had also been deployed for the security of the Red Zone, diplomatic enclave and all important government buildings.

It has been reported that Murree Road is closed to all types of traffic and Bara Kahu is also blocked as the protesters have barricaded it with trucks.

Meanwhile, in Karachi, traffic flow remained suspended due to sit-ins as well. According to the traffic police spokesperson the protesters have staged a sit-in at Orangi No. 5, Baldia Hub River Road, Kornagi No. 2.

The traffic police have requested the citizens to take an alternative route.

The National High Way was also closed due to protests in Rawat, Gujjar Khan and Taxila.

The motorways were reopened at 5 am and normal traffic flow resumed.

At least five policemen, including DSP City, were injured in clashes between protesters and police last night.

Furthermore, at least thirty-five protesters from Rawalpindi and more than 100 from across the region have been arrested.

Saw videos of these miscreants beating up policemen with sticks! Despicable!!

They are running amok and lighting fires!

Absolutely agreed. I think this time the government will ensure that a few of their leaders will pass away from 'covid' just like rizvi did a few months ago.

You give them an inch and they will take a mile.

Pak is now paying the price now for giving these molvies too much political power.

They have to be dealt harshly once they resort to violence and to send a message. If the police treats them softly it only encourages others that there will be no consequences.

Too much ignorance in this thread about ground realities

Mark my words. Impossible to take down TLP with force.

Previous government tried it and failed miserably.

You are bringing force against a vast majority.

Just pay a visit to Rizvis Janazah... Say no more!

It's not a vast majority. Once the government resorts to force most of this idiots will run off anyway.

Video show army officers onboard a pick-up chanting TLP slogans whilst surrounded by mob.

Don't really see the correlation of honesty and protesting. How would you know that those ones protesting are the dishonest ones?

What was the need to arrest Rizvi and breaking the agreement from government side? Now these protestors will put full blame on Government. Government would have been in better moral position if they didn't initiated all this mess.

Thank god someone speaks common sense

Government has always struck on its own foot.

Why made the agreement with Khadim rizvi in first place

Then they asked for more time.

On paper tlp has every right to make government abide by its own agreement

Had never heard of this organisation before. After a bit of research, there main demand is breaking off diplomatic ties with France, and expelling French Ambassador, to which, the Pakistani Govt. had agreed as per Dawn.
So, what are the pros and cons of going ahead with that ?

Yup its the government who broke their agreement, and I am amazed why they agreed in first place if they had no intention to go through with it, government just thought that TLP would just forget or move on, this childish thinking makes government position look even worse. Now government hard hand tactics will only add fire to the fuel. Just hope sense prevails and we see peaceful solution, never good to use force vs your own people, no good outcome in such scenario.

So the incompetency of IK administration is showing its color...

A couple of relatives who work in the suburbs of Lahore cant get into the city due to a total blockage of highways leading into the city staying at their workplace...

To the thugs, religion is a beautiful thing only if it stays in your private life and not result in you burning and looting - get a job already you unemployed bums

and a huge lanat on the army officers waving around their HMG and chanting with these jobless bums - take that attitude to the border where your lot becomes baghair ghutli ka aam

Crooked Maulvis from the Brelvi persuasion see this as a chance to get the limelight after see Diesel and his band crooks hog the limelight. IA it ends peacefully but sooner or later the state has to impose its will.

At least 5 policemen are in the custody of the TLP. One video shows detainees being forced to chant TLP slogans.

TLP should be declared a terror org and banned.

They should arrest several hundred or 1000 of them. Nip these fasadi groups in the bud early. They will run with their tail between their legs like they did not too long ago.

I think you’re listening to all the fake deluded news.

Yes TLP leader Khadim rizvi was arrested and for 6 months the TLP was less appearing but rizvi came
Out clean and came out strong.

Similar here people didnt know his son but after this he will get limelight too.

Governments own fault for agreeing in first place.

Government (be it IK or anyone else) can't do much here.

These people have hijacked Islam. What they are doing goes against Islam and Prophet PBUH's Sunnah.

Its all about money and power, do these brelvis care about Islam any more than Diesel and his band of crooks- not really. Have the Maulvis ever demonstrated against corruption, Police brutality, child abuse etc. If they love our prophet then surely they would have also been demonstrating against all these evils in PK society.

Nope.

Its the funding of agemcies thats helping these people.

Even wtih the existence of ashqui rashools, mumtaz padri was hanged. No one was able to stop that.

Point is, govt is required to show power against these groups instead of negotiating with them.

The millatary might be back this group and trying to remove usman buzdar through it.

Yes you are right they should had never done negotiarions before and that caused more problems.

But, govt did the right thinf by picking this saad up. Hopefully he will be roughed up

Don't really see the correlation of honesty and protesting. How would you know that those ones protesting are the dishonest ones?

Sample size may not be big, but for example, I do know a few pedophiles posing to be Quran teachers and chest thumping "Ashiq-e-rasool" (saw) at the same time.

Another couple from the memory of my college years in Pakistan; corrupt to the core employees in Wapda, all posing to be Ashiq-e-rasool (saw) and used to recite naats, and many many aggressive participants (from many walks of life) in "Jashn-e-Eid Milaad crowds who were quite a dishonest in their day to day work/business and job responsibilities.

In my opinion, the true "Ashiq-e-rasool" (saw), do not come out in the streets, screaming at the top of their lungs, damage personal property, shutting down businesses that hurt the poor working class, and daily wagers, who get temporarily out of work.

True Ashiqs practice patience as the Sunnah of the prophet (saw) and pray naffal salah and offer dua in such matters.
Many of these dramay baaz munafiqs in the protests, setting public property on fire and causing damage, are no Ashiqs in my opinion.

I think I have a general idea of how viciously corrupt our general environment of the country is.
It's quite highly unlikely that all participants in these protests that are supposedly erupted all over Pakistan are "doodh k dhullay huvay" angels.

If you are not honest in your day to day work, you are not an Ashiq. That's the relation between the two behaviors

It seems blocking roads and disrupting businesses during protests are pretty commonplace in the subcontinent, not just Pakistan. Perhaps the govt needs to get the message out that this behaviour is illegal (presuming it is) and then start apprehending and prosecuting ring leaders.

I wouldn't call this behaviour dishonest, probably better described as vandalism.

Federal Minister of Interior Affairs, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, has directed the law enforcement agencies to take strict action against the law-breakers responsible for arson and malicious mischief.

He made this decision while chairing a session on the current law and order situation in the country on Tuesday. Rashid also directed the suspension of cellular services in the areas hit by the protests.

The directive came following the members of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), a religiopolitical party, blocked highways, motorways and main thoroughfares in multiple cities, bringing the country to a standstill. The minister ordered the authorities to take necessary measures to reopen the affected roads along with several entries and exit points of the motorways blocked by angry protesters.

Federal Minister for Religious Affairs, Pir Noor-ul-Haq Qadri, and Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Inspector General (IG) Islamabad attended the important session, whereas, chief secretary and IG Punjab joined via video link.

The Interior Ministry has decided to deal with protestors and law-breakers with an iron hand. Those resorting to violence against commuters and police officials will be taken to task. All necessary measures will be taken to reopen closed routes for traffic.

Moreover, the cellular and internet services will be suspended in affected areas for 24 hours where the law and order situation worsens.

It should be noted that the countrywide protests erupted after TLP chief, Saad Hussain Rizvi, was arrested on Monday noon from outside a mosque near his house after Zuhar prayers.

The Elite force of Punjab Police carried out the arrest and the TLP chief was shifted to an identified place. Reacting to the development, the party’s spokesperson had said that the arrest was made to sabotage TLP’s countrywide protest on April 20 against the government’s move to delay its decision to send back the French envoy to Pakistan.

This has been TLP’s call since French President, Emmanuel Macron made Islamophobic comments and refused to condemn the publication of blasphemous caricatures in October last year.

What is wrong with these people? With the holy month of Ramadan about to begin, life is already tough for the ordinary citizen without these douche bags making it even harder.

Mob beat a Policer Officer. Call him "Yahoodi da agent" (Jew's agent)

This is just sad...

I hope Punjab Police identifies all of these insects and beat the crap out of them before putting them in front of a judge.

Because this is the Islam that has been taught to them.

And who turns these masses into bloody thirsty animals? Exactly the kind of "Mullah" that got arrested.

Thumping their chests as being "Aashiqs" and yelling "Labbaik Ya Rasoolullah" (saw) on top of their lungs, as if they are making the prophet (saw) proud?

These fanatic Mullahs that turn masses into animals are the biggest enemies of Pakistan and Islam.

And then we wonder why Pakistan has negative image internationally and businesses are scared to invest.

For years these groups hold the country to ransom misusing the call of Islam as a means to organise. They get appeased by the state and become legitimised in the process. Then these groups come back demanding more and more concessions.

As mentioned above, where are these people on the streets when we hear of violence committed in name of Islam against minorities or abuse in madrassas ? Where are their religious principles then ? And is this how one behaves in a holy month ?

At least one police constable was killed and 40 other personnel injured in Lahore as violent protests continued for a second day on Tuesday against the arrest of Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) chief Allama Saad Hussain Rizvi.

Protests were also reported in other major cities including Karachi, where at least one protester was killed during clashes with police.

On Tuesday, police also registered an FIR against Rizvi and other TLP leaders under terrorism and other charges.

Major intersections remained closed in Lahore while traffic was upended in Islamabad and Karachi. Further, Motorway Police advised citizens to avoid travelling unnecessarily, adding that Motorway M-1 and M-2 were open for all kinds of traffic.

Police have registered an FIR against TLP chief Saad Hussain Rizvi and other party leaders under terrorism and other charges.

In a statement, party spokesperson Tayyab Rizvi said that there was no truth to reports that the protests had been called off. "They will continue till the French ambassador is deported," he said.

He added that party workers will participate in the protests till they are told otherwise by the party chief. He also said party workers had been martyred in firing incidents in Karachi, Lahore and Talagang. "The number of TLP workers martyred has risen to 12," he said.

Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed, when asked about the law and order situation in the country, said "everything will be alright".

He said this in response to a question by a reporter about the government's strategy to contain the country-wide protests as he was leaving a meeting on the law and order situation, attended by Minister for Religious Affairs Pir Noor-ul-Haq Qadri and other high-ranking officials in Islamabad on Tuesday.

"Nothing has been decided about the release of anyone," he replied to a question about the government's plans for TLP chief Saad Hussain Rizvi.

A day earlier, at least two people were killed and several others, including policemen, injured when violence erupted in major cities of the country.

The government had not officially commented on these protests, which have been ongoing for a second day today, till the filing of this report.

The TLP is protesting blasphemous caricatures published in France and demanding that the French ambassador be sent home and import of goods from that country banned.

The government had reached an agreement with the TLP on Nov 16 to involve the parliament to decide the matter in three months. As the Feb 16 deadline neared, the government expressed its inability to implement the agreement and sought more time. The TLP agreed to delay its protest by two-and-a-half months to April 20.

On Sunday, the party chief, in a video message, asked the TLP workers to be ready to lunch the long march if government failed to meet the deadline. It prompted the government to arrest him.

Police swooped on Rizvi at around 2pm on Wahdat Road in Lahore where he had gone to attend a funeral. Outraged, the TLP issued a call for countrywide protests. Within the next few hours, protesters took to the streets and blocked the Grand Trunk Road on a number of points.

All main cities like Lahore, Gujranwala, Islamabad and Peshawar were cut off from each other and the rest of the country. The activists held sit-ins at various points in Hyderabad and Sukkur. They blocked highways, motorways and train tracks, disrupting life in a better part of the country and causing violence as protesters clashed with police at many places.

In Lahore, protesters beat a police constable to death during a clash in the Shahdara area, according to Lahore police spokesperson Rana Arif.

At least 40 policemen were injured during the demonstrations on Monday and Tuesday in Lahore alone, according to a police report.

Shahdara Police have registered a First Information Report against TLP leaders and workers for the killing of the police constable.

The funeral prayers of Constable Mohammad Afzal, who was martyred last night during violence by the protesters, were offered today at Qila Gujjar Singh Police Lines.

Meanwhile, Islamabad police on Tuesday urged citizens to use alternate routes instead of Dhokri Chowk, Bhara Kahu, Kashmir Chowk, Rawat T Chowk, Tarnol, Faizabad and IJP Chowk.

Rawal Road, Tramri Road, Faisal Avenue, Express Road and Margalla Road are open for traffic, a spokesperson for Islamabad police said.

Jinnah Avenue, Srinagar Highway as well as 7th, 9th, 10th and 11th Avenue were open for traffic, he said, adding that Ataturk Avenue and Shahra-i-Dastoor were also open for all kinds of traffic.

He urged citizens to avoid travelling unnecessarily and adding that officials were working to address the issues being faced by the people.

Karachi
The Karachi traffic police said that while protesters had dispersed from most parts of the city, demonstrations were still ongoing in three areas of the metropolis.

"Sit-ins are being staged at Orangi Town No. 5, Korangi 2.5 and Hub River Road. Alternate routes are being provided at the protest sites," the statement said.

Baldia Town police station ASI Farooq Ahmed added that police were trying to clear Hub River Road to ensure the smooth flow of traffic. However, TLP workers had pelted officials with stones, he said.

The situation turned violent in the evening when a 22-year-old man was killed and another was injured in police firing carried out to disperse protesters in Baldia No. 4.

In the evening, protest also resumed at Star Gate, where motorcycles were set on fire. Sharea Faisal was closed, and traffic was being diverted from this road to Shahrah-i-Quaideen.

Five separate FIRs were lodged in four different police stations of the East district against 30 "miscreants", including two under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), according to the SSP East.

Meanwhile, Punjab Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid said the disruption of oxygen supplies during protests on Monday night had been a “crisis”.

“Please do not block roads for ambulances and for visitors to the hospitals. Some ambulances are carrying oxygen cylinders, which are extremely essential for Covid patients,” Rashid said.

Punjab pandemic pointman Asad Aslam said several hospitals had faced oxygen shortages on Monday night, but the situation had stabilised after roads were cleared by authorities.

100%. Amongst the people I know, those men who are very dishonest, like to drink and party and are involved in frauds like bogus workplace injury claims are the ones who are the biggest and die-hard TLPers. Last night, one of the biggest playboys of Hong Kong, who is well-known in the partying scene, put up a post on FB saying that those who stop Rizvi’s followers should be killed. Empty vessels make a lot of noise!

Just lock these miscreants up as they did last time and teach them a good lesson. Need to cut them down as soon as possible.

Just saw 1 bus car and ambulance being smashed by police

Also tlp guys giving ways to ambulances

Also thousands in Lahore dharna

On top of that government not fulfilling its own agreement

And then arresting hafiz saad for what!?

You guys are respectfully deluded. ✌🏽

Pakistan violence: New Delhi concerned about Indian Sikh pilgrims, in touch with authorities

Amid increased violence in Pakistan, India is concerned about Indian Sikh pilgrims in the country for Baisakhi celebrations. Top sources in Delhi have told WION that the Indian government is continuously monitoring the situation and is in touch with Pakistani authorities for the safety and well-being of its citizens.

Two people have died in Pakistan after massive protests in the backdrop of Pakistani authorities detaining Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) chief Saad Hussain Rizvi. TLP chief has been detained ahead of April 20 deadline to implement group demands, which includes expelling of French envoy, cutting ties with France.

Currently, around 900 Indian Sikh pilgrims are in Pakistan who were to go to Panja Sahib Gurdwara for Baisakhi celebrations. Due to protests in Pakistan, they were taken to Gurudwara in Lahore. Pakistan authorities have rescheduled their visits.

Pakistan Sikh Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (or PSGPC)'s Satwant Singh speaking to WION said, "Security arrangements are being reviewed by the authorities. Arrangements being made to facilitate the Jatha".

As per the earlier prepared schedule, they were to reach Panja Sahib on April 12 to April 14 to celebrate Vaisakhi. But now, authorities are rescheduling the itinerary.

Lahore to Punjab Sahib is six hours away by road, but main roads are closed as of now due to violence. High Commission for Pakistan in India had issued over 1100 visas to Sikh pilgrims from India to participate in the annual Baisakhi celebrations from 12-22 April.

Under the framework of the Pakistan-India Protocol on visits to religious shrines of 1974, a large number of Sikh yatrees from India visit Pakistan to observe various religious festivals/occasions every year.

ISLAMABAD: The federal government said on Tuesday that it can not be dictated by any party or group and approved the deployment of Rangers in Punjab cities to maintain law and order amid protests by a religious party.

Briefing the media in Islamabad after attending the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan, Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry said dictation to government from any party or group was indigestible.

The science and technology minister was responding to media queries about the protests by a religious party that has crippled life in major cities and claimed the lives of three, including two policemen. Nearly 100 policemen have also been injured in clashes with the protesters.

He said a party or group could present their demands in a democratic way upon which negotiations could be held, but decision-making could not be left to any party or group.

When his attention was drawn towards violence and agitation in various parts of Pakistan, the federal minister emphasised that things would be fine soon.

"No group or party must even think of dictating the government or the state. If a state allows this, then it will disintegrate and there will be chaos," he said.

He said any student group, lawyers' body or religious group could present their demands and there could be talks in a democratic manner, but there was no room for dictation to the government or state.

The government, he said, wanted peace and tranquillity and did not want disturbance of law and order.

He said it was highly improper to hinder the movement of oxygen cylinders, as already around 4,100 coronavirus patients needed extreme care.

"Special arrangements are being made for smooth transportation of cylinders. Pakistan is the fifth-largest state and we cannot leave it to groups or parties to dictate their decisions," he said.

Chaudhry added that the cabinet has approved the deployment of Rangers in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Jhelum and Bahawalpur for maintenance of law and order.

‘No decision on anyone's release’
Meanwhile, talking to reporters after attending the federal cabinet meeting, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said the cabinet had reviewed the political and law and order situation in the country.

He said no decision had been taken about anyone’s release.

He dismissed reports of violence and assured that all will be well soon. He said the government had decided to take strict action against the law breakers and to reopen several roads, entry and exit points that were closed due to protests.

‘Help from army can be sought if needed’
On the other hand, a meeting chaired by Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat decided to deploy Rangers personnel along with the police at 16 points in Lahore. The minister said assistance from the Pakistan Army could be sought if the situation worsened.

He warned that no one would be allowed to take the law into their own hands and directed the officials to immediately arrest law breakers and file cases against them.

Privileged people will not understand why masses protest by blocking roads. If they protest at a designated area, no one hears them. But when it causes inconvenience, only then media, middle class and the govt takes notice. No one would have to block roads if their grievances were heard.

Nope as far as I know. The government has said that they will enforce law strictly.

They are...

The interior ministry decided on Wednesday to deal sternly with the 'miscreants' taking the law into their hands, as the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) protest subsided in most areas of the country, with sporadic clashes reported in some cities.

According to police officials, the protests have been ended in most places across the country, while a few incidents of skirmishes between the police and protesters have been reported.

The meeting, with Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid in the chair and senior officials in attendance, reviewed the law and order situation across the country, particularly in Islamabad.

On the occasion, Rashid lauded police, Rangers and district administration on getting majority of the areas cleared. Those in attendance praised police officials who lost their lives in the clashes.

The interior minister directed the participants to ensure the writ of the state at all costs. He said that motorways, GT Road, and other major arteries have been reopened for traffic.

He added that Liaquat Bagh, Tarnol, Bara Kahu, and Rawat have also been cleared for vehicular traffic.

Officials of Safe City Authority Lahore stated that several places in the provincial capital are still closed due to the protests.

Deputy Commissioner Lahore said that Thokar Niaz Beg, Multan road and some other areas have been reopened for traffic.

In Rawalpindi, several people have reportedly been injured following clashes with the police. Shelling was reported from the Liaquat Bagh chowk and Murree road, with protesters pelting stones on the law enforcement personnel.

The city's metro-bus track turned into a battleground, with several reportedly injured. The protesters also set properties on fire and were dispersed by Rangers through a baton-charge.

Skirmishes were also reported from Taxila where protesters have managed to continue their sit-ins.

Traffic has reportedly been restored in Karachi and Sahiwal too as police successfully dispersed the protesters.

Clashes have been reported from Multan, with several police officials sustaining injuries in the incidents.

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday said the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) would not be allowed to create unrest under the guise of staging a protest, as the federal cabinet allowed the deployment of the paramilitary Rangers in several cities of Punjab.

“The government was constantly negotiating with them [TLP] but they were preparing for a protest,” he observed while chairing the federal cabinet meeting.

“We received information about some miscreants using the march as an opportunity to disturb law and order. We can’t allow that to happen.” The premier noted that the next 24 hours were important and hopefully the protests would subdue by then. The cabinet approved the deployment of Rangers in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Jhelum and Bahawalpur to bring the law and order situation under control.

The PM had also held a separate meeting with the army chief on national security issues.

Later at the post-cabinet briefing, Science and Technology Minister Fawad Chaudhry told reporters that dictation from any party or group was unacceptable but they could present their demands in a democratic way. “Negotiations could be held [on the demands],” he said, referring to the protests.

The minister maintained that things would be fine soon. “No group or party … must not even think of dictating to a government or the state. If the state allows this, then it will disintegrate and there will be chaos.”

Fawad said the government wanted peace and tranquility but it was inappropriate to hinder the movement of oxygen cylinders, as already over 4,100 coronavirus patients needed extreme care. The minister also said the opposition’s plan to send the government packing was now buried after the “demise” of their alliance, the Pakistan Democratic Movement. “I had already predicted that alliances that not based on ideology could not remain intact for a long time,” he added. “Time has proven that I was correct as the PDM was formed to protect personal interests,” he said, adding that the PDM had become of a relic of the past, “therefore, the opposition should end the politics of resignations [from the assemblies]”.

The minister maintained that the PPP had a stake in the system and that was why it was against the resignations.

“The PML-N [Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz] and the JUI-F [Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl] should also reconsider their future strategy,” he added “[JUI-F chief and PDM president] Fazlur Rehman told the PPP not to make BAP [Balochistan Awami Party] its ‘Baap’ [father] though it was their [opposition parties] internal matter,” Fawad said.

He further claimed that the PML- N leadership had expelled PPP leaders Sherry Rehman and Qamar Zaman Kaira from the alliance’s WhatsApp group. He reiterated the government’s offer to opposition parties to bring their proposals for electoral reforms. “They [opposition] should set aside their egos and cooperate with the government for institutional reforms,” he added. “In the next phase, judicial reforms can be taken up.” Responding to a question about the PDM, the minister said that five constituent parties of the alliance had no member in parliament. “Therefore, the government would like to talk to the PML-N, the ANP and the JUI-F on reforms.”

Fawad said the digitalisation of the cabinet had been completed and that would save Rs510 million every year. “From next week, each member of the cabinet would receive a tablet and the agenda would be shared digitally,” he added. “I will also request the National Assembly speaker and the Senate chairman to step up the process of making both the houses paperless as early as possible.”

Fawad said Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar, who heads the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) which serves as the nerve centre for the country’s combined efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19, briefed the cabinet on the coronavirus situation. “In the third wave [of the disease] there are 4,200 patients in a serious condition,” he explained. “In the first phase, there were 3,200,” he said. Fawad, quoting Umar, also said the next two weeks were crucial and following precautions were vital.

He said a logistic committee of the cabinet headed by Ali Zaidi had been formed that would present its recommendations about the import of coronavirus vaccine. The cabinet, he said, also gave approval to the establishment of a Central Business District in Lahore which would comprise two projects — Walton Road comprising 350 acres and Wahdat Colony spread over 270 acres. The cabinet also gave the nod to the establishment of a registration authority for geographical indicator tags for Pakistan’s agricultural and non-agricultural products to maintain their national identity.

“Geographical indicator tags for Pakistani mangoes, precious gems, and other products will be acquired for their protection as Pakistani products in the international market.” Fawad said succession certificates was a major issue for overseas Pakistanis as they had to come to the country and obtain them from the courts.

“But now NADRA [National Database and Registration Authority] system would be installed in embassies and they would get succession certificates from there.” The minister further said the cabinet had also approved the proposal of setting up a Litigants Facilitation Centre in Islamabad and the CDA would construct this building. He said the rules of business had been amended to empower the ministries so that they could make their own decisions. The minister said that the cabinet had given its approval to the midterm budget strategy paper, which was presented before it. The cabinet was informed that remittances have reached $21.5 billion which was a record and “evidence of overseas Pakistanis’ trust in the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan”.

The cabinet also was informed that exports had reached $18.7 billion mark whereas they stood at $17.4 billion last year. “Imports worth $39.5 billion were registered this fiscal year whereas last year they stood at $34.5 billion,” the minister said.

Fawad said economic growth had reached 3% mark which would hit 5.1% by 2023-24. He added that foreign exchange reserves were now enough for three and a half months. The minister said in the upcoming Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), special additions would be made and disparity in the salaries would be addressed. He said Zaireen Management policy and reduction in student’s visa fee were also approved.

Speaking about estranged PTI leader Jahangir Tareen, the minister acknowledged that he was an important part of the party. “When and if he would invite us or host a dinner, we will definitely go there.” Fawad continued that Tareen was not alone in facing cases, and already ministers, including Aleem Khan and Sibtain Khan went to jail and obtained bail to fight their cases. “[PTI leader] Babar Awan resigned and is back again,” he added About inflation, he said the prices of sugar and flour were already declining and sales at Utility Stores had touched an unprecedented Rs1 billion.

To a question about the cabinet reshuffle, the minister said the process was in its final stage. “It’s the prime minister’s prerogative under Article 90 of the Constitution to decide who should be a minister and what ministry be allotted to whom.”

The man is scared s@#$less omg man's bout to have a panic attack while the woman is going off at the thugs :salute

These rats should be behind bars, this is violent extremism, No way their representatives of Islam with pathetic acts like these

It is awful to see kids as young as 6 to 9 years old holding batons, chanting extremist slogans and beating up policemen. Extremism has seeped into every segment of the society. Lawyers from Karachi, Jhelum and other major cities have pledged full support for the TLP.

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhary said on Thursday that the responsibility to thwart efforts aimed at fanning violence and extremism rests with Muslims.

The minister's remarks came a day after the federal government on Wednesday decided to ban the ultra-right-wing Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) – whose supporters rioted across the country for the past three days – under the country's anti-terrorism law.

"Tehreek-e-Labaik like extremist outfit wants to change the identity of Islam. In the subcontinent, the preaching of Islam in the shrines and saints was based on the strong foundations of love, sincerity and humanity of the elders," the federal minister added in a tweet.

On April 14, the announcement to ban TLP came hours after law enforcement officials cleared the major thoroughfares of the country after sporadic clashes with protesters reported in some towns and cities.

The protest started after the call was given by TLP's leadership following the arrest of party chief Saad Hussain Rizvi.

"Today we have decided to ban TLP and this file will go to the cabinet for approval," said Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid as he addressed the media in Islamabad.

The interior minister added that the Punjab government has requested for the ban and the summary will be sent to the federal cabinet for approval. "The ban will be enforced on TLP under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997 Rule 11."

“A single political party cannot lay claim to the matter of Namoos-e-Risalat as it is an issue close to the hearts of all 200 million people of this country,” Rashid said.

While i am no fan of the Mullahs, i dont see how the government can legally ban TLP. And it seems risky even if they can. These parties should participate, and hopefully lose in democratic elections. If you ban them from participating in elections, they might go for an armed revolution. And unlike Deobandis barelvis are the majority in Pakistan.

Ban on TLP: Summary sent to PM Imran Khan for approval

ISLAMABAD: A summary of the interior ministry seeking a ban on Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) under the anti-terrorism law has been sent to Prime Minister Imran Khan and after his approval, it will be circulated among cabinet members for their consent.

According to Geo News, a notification for it is expected to be issued today (Thursday).

In a major development on Wednesday, after days of violence across the country in which three people lost their lives, including two policemen, the federal government decided to ban the TLP.

Speaking to the media in Islamabad, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed had said the ban on TLP will be placed under Section 11-B of the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997, on the recommendation of the Punjab government, and added that a summary for the ban has been moved to the federal cabinet.

“Today we have decided to ban TLP and we will get the approval of the cabinet,” the interior minister said.

He said several rounds of talks were held with TLP leaders, however, the party remained stuck to its stance. He said on the one hand they were talking, and on the other directing their workers to prepare for a march on Islamabad, with full force.

Later, Rashid also told a news channel that the decision to ban the party has the nod of all stakeholders and has been taken after thorough deliberations.

He said there were several other religious parties in the country, but none resorted to such violent behaviour. He said only in the past few years, the TLP has held several violent protests, bringing the entire country to a grinding halt.

He was optimistic that the ban on the TLP would be announced in the next few days after the cabinet gives it a go-ahead.

Rashid said no single political party can claim ownership to Namoos-e-Risalat, as he pointed that it was a matter close to the hearts of the entire 20 million people of this country. He said the government remained committed to table a bill on Namoos-e-Risalat in the National Assembly.

The minister said there was absolutely no question on the issue of “finality of prophethood (Khatam-e-Nabwat)” and no Muslim, including him, could even think of deviating from it, even at the cost of their lives.

TLP banned in Pakistan. Federal cabinet has approved the summary on request of the Punjab govt to ban the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan. Top leadership booked in various cases on terrorism charges and incitement against the state.

It's a catch 101 for IK and can't blame the guy too much

but yeah banning especially on terrorism charges is a little extreme

Should we ban lawyers union after the lawyer movement?- they did similar things and there are multiple examples of similar riots in Pak history
We didn't ban thier organization did we?

Seems unlawful imo or at least there's a lack of consistentcy...

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday dismissed a petition, with a cost of Rs2,00,000, that sought the formation of a joint investigation team against the arrest of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) chief Hafiz Saad Rizvi.

The petitioner, advocate Imran Javed Qureshi, representing a law firm Legal Awareness and Protection Center (LAPC), had prayed to the court that a JIT be formed against the "arrest in broad daylight."

The complainant had sought an answer as to why police made video clips of the arrest, with the same going viral on social media. Why, he asked, the followers of TLP were incited through such clips, causing them to block the roads. The blockages perturbed the commoners, he maintained.

Chief Justice Qasim Khan asked the petitioner’s counsel as to “what Islam says about road blockade”, referring to the trouble faced by the common man.

The judge further asked who was responsible for those who lost their lives in ambulances that were stuck in traffic [due to the protests]."

At this, the law officer implored that no one was inquiring about the officials martyred and hundreds of other personnel who were injured in the clashes.

Judge Qasim said, “under which law did you file this petition and over what grounds are you asking for the formation of a JIT."

“Why shouldn't your petition be dismissed with cost”, he added.

Protests erupted in multiple cities on Monday after authorities detained Saad Hussain Rizvi in Lahore.

Saad Rizvi is the son of the firebrand cleric, and previous head of the TLP, Khadim Hussain Rizvi, who died in November last year.

The arrest came a day after TLP's central council warned the government that if did not expel the French ambassador from the country, they would march towards Islamabad on April 20.

if they get banned what happens to the group in UK, since yesterday there have been some lunatics of TLP protesting in london

The supposedly 'mullah appeasing' and 'puppet' Imran Khan has banned the most popular mullah outfit in recent times, which we were being told, had the backing of the big bad military itself.

His critics have nowhere to hide.
