Former Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi on Tuesday picked his World Cup XI which does not include the likes of batting legend Sachin Tendulkar and India's World Cup-winning captain MS Dhoni. In fact, it includes only one Indian player on the list amid five from Pakistan, four from Australia, and one from South Africa. Any guesses who is that Indian?
Shahid Afridi's all-time World Cup XI:
Why is Sachin missing the list, strange? He is the highest-scoring batsman in World Cup history. Having played six World Cups in his illustrious 19-year-long career, Sachin has scored 2278 runs in 44 innings at an average of 56.95 with 16 half-centuries and six centuries. The next on the list is Ponting with 1743 runs in 46 matches.
On the other hand, Dhoni is India's World Cup-winning skipper. His astute leadership qualities and calculative mindset had played a crucial role in India's second World Cup trophy in 2011 where Dhoni had scored the winning run en route to his unbeaten knock of 91 runs. Besides, he has scored 507 runs in 17 World Cup innings at 42.25 with three half-centuries.
Meanwhile, Kohli, who is part of Afridi's list, has scored 587 runs in 17 innings at 41.92 with two centuries and one half-century. 2019 will be his third World Cup appearance.
Well, World Cup 2019 is just around the corner where India and England are the two top contenders for the elusive trophy while defending champions Australia and Pakistan are the underdogs.
Afridi had recently opined on Pakistan's World Cup squad that was announced earlier this month. He mentioned that he will miss Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Amir although the latter has been considered as a reserve and will be tested in the England series that starts next month. “Must’ve been a tough decision for the selection committee to select the best 15 member squad for the WC. Best of luck to those who have made it – Hopefully you’ll bring the cup home. Personally, I’ll miss Wahab bcz of pace & Mohammad Amir given the English conditions,” Afridi had tweeted.
