1. Denial

....that England have been in decline as a test nation for a decade, with performances from Cook, Root, Stokes, Anderson and Broad papering over the cracks and nobody good coming through.


2. Anger

...at The Hundred / T20 / ECB / Silverwood for degrading the test side


3. Bargaining

...we won the 2019 WC, and nearly won the T20 WC by resting the test players.... oh wait.


4. Depression

Imagine what home tests will be like when Anderson retires?


5. Acceptance

Going forward, only Root, Stokes, Wood and Robinson are guaranteed a place. The others are on the way out or not performing.

It's going to be a long way back, but if we gear the County schedules to make test batsmen again....

We need at least five County Championship matches per side in July and August, when the batting conditions are best and bowlers have to learn their trade.

Hiding the red ball game in April and September is killing the Test team.

Oh, and get Jason Gillespie as coach before Australia can snaffle him.

Lastly, require all players to play a minimum of 5 County Championship matches per season to be eligible for national selection in any format or to get a No Objection Certificate for overseas T20 contracts.

Robinson is a Caddick type. Tall, high bounce, swings it.

We have several good young quicks but the problem is getting them in the park.

I don’t know how you could flatten wickets in England of how this would help batting. Boycott, Gower, Gooch, Strauss’s mob were excellent and came up on those wickets against the Duke. The problem is the schedule, with the middle of the season given over to LO at the expense of four day cricket.

The idea about replacing the Dukes with the Kookaburra is an interesting one.

The Hundred has to be disposed of, it’s horrific. 20 and 50 over competitions to stay.

Also they need to reduce the number of counties, and have a full county season.

Until these steps are taken then we are effectively on the level of West Indies and Bangladesh in Test cricket. Inferior to Pakistan and South Africa, clearly behind New Zealand, and leagues away from India and Australia.

The 100 is not to blame. For starters the tournament is not even a year old. Also the likes of Malan and Root played in the 100 and these players were top English batting performers in Ashes thus far. Add Burns to this list, who is the the second highest Test run getter this year after Root.

Then you have T20, some of the best performers in the Aussie camp played (and won) the WCT20 this year. Warner is clearly showing his aggression, along with Cummins and Starc.

Englanf are not short of talent, the reality is that excuses were being made well before the Ashes in relation to lockdowns and family prominence down under.

England are simply mentally weak at this stage; coupled with the fact there is clearly something not right behind the scenes.

Using the Kookaburra is a great idea, but not on flat wickets but minefield wickets in England! Spinners will benefit greatly from using this ball in England!
