• Ehsan Mani: “Through this event, we expect economy and tourism to get significant boost, which will have a direct impact on the overall health of the country”

• 425 overseas players from 22 countries registered their interest in playing in the HBL PSL 2020

• Tickets to go on sale from 20 January, more details to be announced closer to the date

Lahore, 1 January 2020:

The Pakistan Cricket Board today fulfilled one more of its promises to the fans and followers when it announced the schedule of the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 with all 34 matches to be played across four international venues of the country from 20 February to 22 March.

The schedule announcement was part of the 50 days to go to HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 celebrations that also featured the launching of the countdown clock, which has been mounted at the main entrance of the Gaddafi Stadium – the home of Pakistan cricket.

Reigning champions Quetta Gladiators will open the event at the back of an opening ceremony at the National Stadium in Karachi when they will go toe to toe with two-time former winners Islamabad United, while curtains will fall on the fifth edition of one of the most popular and followed leagues on 22 March at the Gaddafi Stadium.

National Stadium will also play host to the Qualifier between the top two sides, whereas the Gaddafi Stadium will be the venue of the two Eliminators and the final.

Of the 34 event matches, National Stadium will stage nine matches and Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium will play host to 14 matches. Multan Sultans will play three games at the Multan Cricket Stadium, while Pindi Cricket Stadium will be the venue for eight matches.

According to the event schedule, defending champions Quetta Gladiators will play three matches in Lahore, four in Karachi, one in Multan and two in Rawalpindi; while Peshawar Zalmi, the 2017 winners and the 2019 losing finalists, will be in action in one match each in Lahore and Multan, three in Karachi and five in Rawalpindi.

Islamabad United will play three matches in Lahore, two in Karachi and five in Rawalpindi; Karachi Kings will play two matches in Lahore, five in Karachi, one in Multan and two in Rawalpindi; Multan Sultans will play five matches in Lahore, one in Karachi, three in Multan and one in Rawalpindi; and Lahore Qalandars will play eight matches in Lahore and one each in Karachi and Rawalpindi.

PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani said: “After bringing Test cricket back to Pakistan, hosting of the entire HBL Pakistan Super League is our other major achievement. I never had any doubts it was Pakistan’s league and should be played in front of home crowds. We had made this commitment to the people of Pakistan at the end of last year’s event and I am pleased today we have announced the event schedule with four centres to share the 34 event matches between them.

“The HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 will feature 36 foreign stars. It was gratifying that 425 overseas players from 22 countries registered their interest in playing in the HBL PSL 2020. Of these, 39 from Afghanistan, 12 from Australia, 23 from Bangladesh, 10 from Canada, 109 from England, seven from Hong Kong, six from Ireland, seven from the Netherlands, eight from Nepal, 11 from New Zealand, nine from Oman, five from Scotland, four from Singapore, 27 from South Africa, 39 from Sri Lanka, nine from the UAE, six from the USA, 82 from the West Indies, 9 from Zimbabwe and one each from Bermuda, Kenya and Namibia.

“This shows the confidence that players throughout the world have in playing in Pakistan.

“Through this event, we expect economy and tourism to get significant boost, which will have a direct impact on the overall health of the country.

“For the fans, this will be a long-awaited opportunity to see their cricketing heroes live in action and reinforce their love for this great game. I am expecting like last year, the entire country will get behind this tournament and by turning up in big numbers, they will once again show the world their passion for cricket.

“For the PCB itself, the schedule announcement means we will now work flat-out until the final ball is bowled to ensure we produce an event that is memorable for all stakeholders, including the players, commercial partners, fans and media.

“I want to especially thank the local governments and security agencies for their support and assistance. They have gone out of their way to facilitate the PCB in bringing HBL PSL back to Pakistan, for which we are grateful.”

Great that the whole tournament is in Pakistan. Hopefully the other stadiums are ready by next year so we can have a true home/away system for the teams.

Great start. Best of luck to PCB and PSL management. I hope it is a successful season with full stadiums. We need it.

Side note: I hope that by the next season we can move to a truly home and away schedule with each team having a permanently assigned stadium.

Decent. For those wondering why multan doesnt have more games, its cause of a 4 star hotel and distance between hotel and stadium. Not feasible for too many games just yet.

Ehsan Mani in an earlier presser mentioned 6 venues to be ready by next year’s PSL. But I’m not sure if Quetta and Peshawar can host all their home matches. Latter possibly but former unlikely. Quetta hosting even one game will be a huge step forward.

Lets hope for the best though. Last year even this didn’t seem remotely possible.

Which other 2 venues did he mention???

He didn’t mention any names but presumably he meant home grounds of Peshawar and Quetta.

Here’s his quote:

“I had announced last year that next PSL will be played in Pakistan in full; I am hopeful that it will happen here and we have announced 2 new venues in Rawalpindi and Multan; I am hoping that in 2021 we will have six venues which will mean that each side will have their own home ground”

It will be very interesting for cricket lovers, 1st match finishing in Karachi other match starting in Lahore on same day. Thanks God they got rid of those overloaded double headers on same ground :)

Thats great. I presume it will be Arbab niaz for Peshawer and for Quetta maybe Bughti Stadium

I feel it will take some more time for cricket to return to Quetta. Maybe PCB should look at some other venue (maybe Hyderabad if the renovate the ground) could become Quetta's home ground.

I heard that Islamabad is the safest city in Pakistan and it's also the capital. Why no games there ?

i hope in next 5 years , cities like gujranwala , sialkot and hyderabad will be able to host matches. PCB needs to work on the stadiums in these cities.

Love this! Planning to be back home in Feb so will be going to the games.

The Pindi cricket stadium is barely 500 m away from boundaries of Islamabad. Moreover Pindi/Islamabad are twin cities so the stadium kinda serves both the cities.

How far's Hyderabad from Quetta? Same province?

No, they are 2 different provinces and they aren't really close to each other.

Looked it up on google, and they are about 700 km from each other.

Quetta is far far away from hosting any psl matches. The other stadium would most likely be Iqbal stadium in Faisalabad which has hosted many tests and ODI’s before. The second would be Peshawar which is currently being renovated.

Seems like a lot of chest beating about the schedule - people should be happy with the fact its happening in Pakistan!

Remember saying last season somewhere it would be amazing on the weekends a day match in one city and a night match in another city and that dream is becoming a reality. Looking forward to this season :)

Arbab Niaz Stadium for sure, because it's being upgraded and plan is to get it ready for PSL 2021. I don't know if matches can be played with foreign stars in Quetta due to security concerns. Maybe Iqbal stadium in Faisalabad can serve as home for Quetta's team.

I believe instead of Quetta, Faisalabad should have been given a team in PSL. It's the third largest city in Pakistan and has its own functional stadium. Moreover Faisalabad Division's population is more than that of entire province of Baluchistan. While Quetta was the cheapest team in the initial bidding, Faisalabad might have fetched more $ ahead of Peshawar and Islamabad.

Faisalabad deserves a team but that makes it punjab super league because half of teams would be from punjab. I would personally like to have have hyderabad as a 7th team and thereafter Faisalabad or sialkot as an 8th team

The problem with Hyderabad having a team is that the stadium is owned by the local government. So the PCB has to pay usage fees and can't spend money on upgrading, the owners (Sindh Gov't/local gov't) have to do it. The PCB keeps asking them to but they don't. If I remember correctly, Gaddafi, NSK, Pindi, Quetta, and Faisalabad are directly owned by the PCB. Peshawar I think is KPK owned but they're working with the PCB to actually upgrade.

If you read again, I wasn't vouching for Faisalabad as 7th team but having it instead of Quetta. If half of the teams in PSL are from Punjab it won't make PSL as Punjab Super League. PSL will remain as Pakistan Super League.

Here's why:
Punjab is more than half of the Pakistan's population and Pakistan is still called Pakistan not Punjab. Based on population, Punjab has 141 out of 272 seats in national assembly. National assembly is not called Punjab National Assembly but still Pakistan National Assembly.

Anyway this was just for fun, but Faisalabad Division will bring more revenue and support for its team than a Quetta team. Firstly, because Faisalabad Division has two million more people than entire province of Baluchistan and secondly, people are more cricket enthusiastic in former. I have been to Quetta a couple of times and people barely follow cricket. They are more into football and boxing.

I think sometime back Hyderabad govt tried to give the stadium back to PCB. Don't know what happened afterwards.

At first I read it as Fixers announced for PSL and was like, but the tournament hasn't even started yet. :virat
