"For both Steyn and Morkel, it will be a challenge to stop this Indian batting lineup" : Harbhajan

Senior India spinner Harbhajan Singh feels that South African fast bowler Dale Steyn might not turn out to be a big threat for India in next month's highly-anticipated Test series, starting on January 9 at Newlands in Cape Town. "Dale Steyn is unarguably the best fast bowler of the last 10 years but coming back into international cricket is not easy. A Test match against Zimbabwe will not exactly be an indicator of what he can do against India," Harbhajan told PTI during an interview on the upcoming South Africa series.

Steyn was out of competitive cricket for a year after suffering a shoulder dislocation during a Test match against Australia last year.

"Look at the Indian batting line up. We have so much quality. Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma. This is perhaps among the best line-up in world cricket.

"For both Steyn and Morkel, it will be a challenge to stop this line-up especially when they themselves will need to get into the groove," the 'Turbanator' assessed.

The lack of lateral movement in South Africa means that batsmen would only need to counter the bounce.

"The Kookaburra ball, as everyone knows, will stop seaming after 20 odd overs. Plus it's only the bounce that needs to be taken care of," Harbhajan said.

There is a debate whether Hardik Pandya for his all-round abilities should be India's choice as No.6 but Harbhajan thinks otherwise.

He wants to see Rohit Sharma at the No.6 position as he is still not sure how Hardik Pandya would shape up as a batsman in that important position.

"Rohit is a fabulous player. Someone who plays the pull shot well and also plays the cut shot well. Rohit is my pick at No.6. He can ride the bounce and play his strokes," he further explained.

"Hardik is a talented boy but Rohit for me is a complete batsman," Harbhajan gave his take on the subject. He did not want to read too much into India not playing a practice game in South Africa before the first Test match.

India are expected to play single spinner in the three Test matches and it is going to be a toss-up between Ravichandran Ashwin and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja.

For Harbhajan, if Ashwin is fit, then there should not be any debate about who the single spinner in the playing XI should be.

"If Ashwin is still not an automatic pick after 300 wickets then when?" questioned Harbhajan. For someone, who was known as Ricky Ponting's nemesis (he got the former Australian captain 12 times in Tests), Harbhajan refuses to believe the theory that off-spinners would only be effective against a team that has more left handers.

"The South African pitches will test patience of spinners as there won't be much purchase like the sub-continent tracks where the ball will turn and jump from Day 1. That's where skill comes into play as one has got to be patient," said Harbhajan.

The seasoned off-spinner believes that India has the team to beat South Africa in their den.

"It's a confident team and it's always good to win matches before any overseas tour. Any team that travels overseas loves to believe that it is going there to win the series. The Indian team is no different. We have a good batting line-up and a quality pace attack," he signed off.

The only thing that can stop steyn in SA is Steyn. If he is fit, he will be a major weapon for SA.

Morkel might not find a spot in the playing eleven. Steyn/Rabada/Philander/Maharaj will be their bowling.

If there is grass covering on the pitch, it will be difficult for Indian batters.

This Indian batting is too strong and playing at home would have given them incredible confidence to dominate bowlers anywhere in the world.

But i got feeling that philander might trouble virat and pujara and hazlewood during aus tour.

I think some of these loudmouths like Sehwag and Harbhajan should tread cautiously here.

A. India has a grand total of 0 practice matches before the First Test.
B. Steyn and AB are back for SA.
C. SA's fast bowling attack is miles head of India's.
D. India's going in not long after a long and completely unnecessary home series against SL which could have easily been rescheduled to some further time. (All thanks to BCCI's legendary managerial acumen).
E. SA is well rested and would be getting good practice against Zim.
F. After the sort of pitches SA were greeted to in India, don't be surprised to be paid back in kind by pitches that would put even NZ 2002 tour's pitches to shame.

All in all, I smell a massacre here. This could be really really ugly and embarrassing for the "No. 1" Test team.

Uhm Philander and Rabada should be the bowlers you're looking out for. Both average below 20 at home with crazy strike rates. I expect Rabada especially to cut through the Indian line up at least once.

He talks as if Steyn/Morkel are Vinay Kumar/ Abhimanyu mithun lol. Is he trying to put pressure on India instead of SA with statements like this?

India will have to be wary of any SA grown bowler not just them. It requires great temperament, skill, technique to survive there let alone make runs.

What Harbhajan says is logical, it wont be easy for Steyn to come back after a year's gap and straightaway run into top form. Harbhajan has always been a positive character and considering that he is friends with many members of the team he is not going to talk negative in any way. Thats his personality.

In his mind he might be apprehensive about India's chances, but publicly he cannot and will not speak negatively. Thats how he has always been.

But the truth is, India is going to find it very diffcult to play Saffer bowlers on their own turf. And if the pitches to help the bowlers, then...ahem... it will be annihilation.

As someone above said, India should have scheduled a lot of practise matches before the first test to get themselves acclimitised to the conditions. Currently, they are walking into the lion;s den, not knowing if the Lion has had his dinner or hasnt eaten for days.

Either way, hopefully the test series is a closely fought affair and not a one sided one as a lot of people are expecting.

If Australia plays well then they will lose 0-3 or else it will lose 0-4.

Lolz @ Harbhajan  So many years of playing cricket at elite level

It'll always be about taking 20 wickets. I'd put my money on Saffers tho.

Indian batters can only draw games, even if all of them transform into Tendulkars and Laras overnight.

I feel Steyn will be taken to the cleaners, barely has any practice, Phillander hasn't been his best for a while, but still, Saffers have Morkel, Rabada and Maharaj who are all capable, very tough series for India.

If there is Good cover of grass , then Philander would be real threat

If southafrica provided green top in all the three test it's good for Indian also
bcz where indian bowling unit can rip through Southafrica (remember 2006 where they only got something around 85). problem for Indian bowling unit where pitch doesn't offer any help for them ,they couldn't take 20 wkt .

It's a 3 match series.

Actually that was what Harbhajan said before Aussies tour to India and is now up to this. Went completely wrong back then. It is to be seen what happens this time.

I am not sure how Steyn will do or wether will he able to play all three matches.

AB's inclusion makes the team stronger but his performance will also be under scanner. We are not sure how he will perform now.

Rabada and Philander are excellent pacers and will be challenging while Indians should do well against Maharaj.

I dare say but

Indian batting lineup> SA batting lineup.

Elgar and de kock are established players now but Amla and de Villiers have passed their peak.

However, there is still a gulf of difference in their bowling lineup.

Oh right.

Baji seems to have faith in India. Let's see what happens.

I can see only a very few Indian batsmen scoring tons here: Kohli and Vijay. That's just my prediction. I wouldn't be worried about Steyn at all but then again it doesn't look like he's forgotten the art of bowling but I'm not sure if he will still bowl at the same pace as he did before; he was devastating against Pak in 2013. Morkel hasn't lost anything but he was always the second fiddle to Steyn so he will grab some wickets here. Rabada and Philander are the ones India should watch out for because you never know that this series might be the one where Rabada becomes one of those bowlers who will be on the tip of everyone's tongues in terms of "who's the best out there", it could catapult him to great heights like the way Kohli was acknowledged when he scored 133 (I think) against SL in an ODI.

I don't see the likes of Pandya or Rohit doing well in the Test series anyway, Kohli will show a lot of heart and can churn out a hundred or maybe a masterclass double ton but the rest would struggle, especially Saha. The Indian spinners might have a nightmare here.

India are going to SA, India are playing away. It will be a difficult test series for them. With Steyn, Rabada, Philander and Morkel together are very dangerous. Majority of there players understand and know the indian players well. This will be very hard series for the Indians, subcontinent teams don't tend to do well in South Africa. But you never India could potentially surprise us all.
