The test series win in Australia 2018 and 2020 outperforms both the T20 tamasha format losses. This really sets it up for the Indian ODI team now to back the right players for 2023 ODI World Cup especially clutch players based on right conditions. I would like to see Shreyas Iyer as one of them for the 2023 World Cup.
Coming to the actual reasoning behind today's loss, this was on the cards obviously and I had already predicted earlier that Pakistan and England were hot favourites for this tournament alongwith Australia.
India weren't favourites and the four teams sitting at the middle in the induction ceremony were the ones who were actually favourites as already pointed out by multiple posters over here.
With the team we had and the stubbornness shown behind the backing of opening combination of Rohit and Rahul went against us and as a result, a semi final exit looks good on paper. Losing vs the tournaments favourites is not a poor end of the campaign and it isn't something to be feel disheartened about, personally I won't. We did beat the other favourites though in a high pressure game.
Hopefully, Pandya as T20I captain will take this team forward and help India pick a clutch team with the likes of Gill, Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Siraj, Bishnoi and Pandya himself being central figures.
