What is changing?

From spring 2020, organ donation in England will move to an 'opt out' system. You may also hear it referred to as 'Max and Keira's Law'.

This means that all adults in England will be considered to have agreed to be an organ donor when they die unless they have recorded a decision not to donate or are in one of the excluded groups.

You still have a choice if you want to be an organ donor or not when you die.

Why is the law changing?
The law is being changed to help save and improve more lives. Every day across the UK, someone dies waiting for a transplant

What do I have to do?
We are asking everyone to:

Record your organ donation decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register
Tell your family and friends what you have decided
Have you recorded your organ donation decision?
Make your choice

If you would like to speak to somebody about your choices, please call our dedicated line: 0300 303 2094

When is the law changing?
The opt out system in England will come into effect from spring 2020. The law around organ donation in England will remain ‘opt in’ until this time.

Who will the changes affect?
These changes will affect all adults in England unless they have recorded a decision not to donate or are in one of the following excluded groups:

Those under the age of 18
People who lack the mental capacity to understand the new arrangements and take the necessary action
Visitors to England, and those not living here voluntarily
People who have lived in England for less than 12 months before their death

Ridiculous, they should respect personal agency. The UK is almost like a police state, deciding what people do with their bodies is disgusting. Funny how some people will give up civil liberties for "humanitarian" reasons.

How so?
Its still your choice. You can opt out.

Do you realise that thousands of people die wanting to donate their organs but fail to fill in a donor card?

It's not the government's right to set it at default, that implies they have the first right.

That's a very weak argument.

If these thousands of people want to do something then all they have to do is fill a simple form.

In this new law the government seems to have the default right to a citizens body unless instructed otherwise. It should be other way around

Think we feel uncomfortable about this idea because we somehow imagine our body parts being pulled out when we are still living! Fact is will you care if you are not in this world?

My only concern is that its not part of our religion (from my basic knowledge)

On the face of it this is an authoritarian move, but you can choose to opt out of it.

Good move however it better not come become a buy-an-organ scheme for international patients.

Raises another question - Should anyone who decided to opt-out be placed at the bottom of any waiting list? Would seem fair to me.

and the default position is a very good one.

organ donation is a beautiful thing and so many millions can’t even do it due to some condition they have or an illness they’ve suffered.

If You don’t want to donate then simply opt out.

Very good post.

I think Islamic view point has evolved on this but I could be wrong.

I think it came out of desperation.

There is just not enough willing donors.
