Gary Kirsten or Justin Langer - Who would you take in Tests?

Definitely Langer - one of the most technically correct openers in the 90's and 2000's. Great technique and always put a price on his wicket.

Unfortunately for him - he was often overshadowed by the more illustrious and aggressive Hayden when they opened together.

Justin Langer, he would put a huge price tag on his wicket.

So did Gary Kirsten. Gary scored 275 against England and occupied the crease for almost 15 hours.

He was South Africa's most technically correct player and South Africa's best player of spin

Garry!

Just like Che Pujara, there has always been something genuinely likable about Garry the batsman and the man. I am openly biased in his favour though i definitely see reasons for many people taking Justin over him. Overall, both very similar kind of batsmen. Gritty fighters who played second fiddle to the other guy, Hayden/Gibbs.

Point to be noted, Garry played most of his cricket in the 90s and his average is pretty respectable from that era.

Garry for me too..However,its pretty close. Two great test batsmen and at same level to Cook although slightly inferior to Smith/Hayden.

I found Justin Langer more stubborn at the crease.

hard to pick but I will take Gary.
Langer had advantage of Hayden on other end who was attacking and at no.3 he had Ponting

Garry was a class above... he was aggressive as well.
Langer was sort of Gambhir like batsmen.. He always grinded and grinded before making runs.
Gary kirsten would even walk into T20 if they would have been on those days.. On his day Garry kirsten was a beast.

This is a pretty good comparison, Inwould chose Gary Kirsten maybe it's me being biased coz of his coaching stint in India..

Pakistan twice found themselves on the wrong side of a Langer marathon. Once in Hobart, 1999, where he won the game with Gilly on the other end and the other one at the WACA in 2004, where Australia were staring down the barrel but Langer rescued them and put Pakistan out of the game. I can't remember a single instance for Kirsten like that against us.

I think Langer was excellent for a longer period of time maybe. I really liked Kirsten too and he was always good, but think only later in his career did he start punching out the big numbers.

I will take Gary kirsten because he fits in today age cricket better. Gary was a technically sound batsmen and was great runner between the wickets.. Langer was technically good but not good in other aspects

You can't go wrong with either of them.

Overall Kristen because he once scored 188* in ODIs.

Coin comment was for the test format. In ODI, there is no comparison here.

Langer was aggressive of the two but I am inclined to go towards Kirsten. He was a very good opener and played well against spin as well. He averaged 52 in India and 88 in Pakistan but failed in SL though. Langer struggled in India and Sri Lanka but did well in Pakistan. But what I remember of him in the 2001 series was that he struggled a lot against spinners. Kirsten was a very good ODI player as well.

So overall I will go for Kirsten.

Langer didn't do well in Asia.

Give me a Kirsten or even Cook.
