Many consider Gautam Gambhir to be an unsung hero of Indian cricket. Gambhir was a part of two World Cup winning campaigns for India - in 2007 and 2011. He was India's highest run-scorer in both the finals. However, as luck would have it - others hogged the limelight.

Gambhir was once considered the No.2 in the Indian team after MS Dhoni- he even captained India in absence of MSD. However, his star fell soon.

Things took a downturn soon after 2011 World Cup and he lost his place in the national side.

According to former chief selector Sandeep Patil it was Gambhir's attitude that was the problem.

"He was dropped from the Indian team and the main reason behind it was his ever-growing so-called ‘attitude problem’,” Sandeep Patil wrote in an article for The Quint.

"It was due to his ‘angry young man’ attitude that I nicknamed him the Amitabh Bachchan of Indian cricket," wrote Patil.

The article came just two days after Gambhir quit as captain of IPL side Delhi Daredevils.

Patil said that Gambhir's decision to return back to India after being hit by a bouncer during 2011 England series cost him dearly. He wrote that the scans revealed that Gambhir's injury was not serious at all and he could have continued in that series.

Patil also revealed that he and Gambhir were friends for 7-8 years but the Delhi opener ended their friendship after he was dropped from the Indian team while Patil was the chief selector.

Gambhir's return to the Indian side was made tougher by the rise of his Delhi teammate Shikhar Dhawan.

Patil was the chairman of the Selection Committee at the time and decided to give Dhawan a chance in place of a struggling Gambhir. Later on, all doors were shut for Gambhir as Murali Vijay too was performing well as an opener.

According to Patil, things have not improved between the duo and Patil believes that Gambhir is still angry with him. However, Patil said that Gautam Gambhir will always remain his favourite cricketer.

Serves this budthameez and rude man right! He seems to think he's Brian Lara!!:)):)) So Lala was not the only one who thinks Gambhir has appalling mannerisms.

He clearly has some sort of mental issue. If I am not wrong, his own teammates don't like him too much either. Has had public disputes with both Dhoni and Kohli

I disagree, many Indians on here agree with his views on a certain subject, so he cant have mental issues.

This has to be a conspiracy against him.

In fact I think it won't be a far stretch to say that Gambhir is probably one one the most hated cricketers of all time.

I posted this because of that in-depth discussion in another thread.

He has an attitude problem, but has gained immortality with his performance in 2 wc finals. This guy is a winner.

He put in two cup winning knocks in the finals .First the 70 odd runs in t20 cup in South Africa 2007.... and 90 odd in 2011 world cup finals. Lara on other hand.......

So you saying Gambhir is better then Lara??:)):)) I hope not!

We all know he had issues with Dhoni and Sachin. Dhoni’s chasing strategy is pretty much same as misbah’s. He let the RR go up to 10 from 6, before playing aggressively. Good thing is he is a better hitter than Misbah, hence he has won more games than Misbah. Gambhir once made comment about this strategy back in 2012. From there on, cunning Dhoni made sure Gambhir was never given proper chances to get back into the team. Gambhir also thought Sachin was playing beyond his sell by date. So he didn’t get any support from Sachin either. Gambhir should have been little smarter when he made those comments. But I like him as a player. He was right about both Sachin and Dhoni though. I am a big Sachin fan but I myself felt he should have retired right after 2011 WC at least from ODI. I was still ok with him playing test matches.

He is way too emotional and I always felt his comments on Dhoni were uncalled for. He was always in and out of the team without a run until Dhoni made him what he is now. Instead of showing gratitude, he thought he was bigger than Dhoni. Also, it's not as if Gambhir was performing well when he was dropped.

The guy deserves all the hate he gets. He's a slightly better version of selfie. Thinks he is the messiah when he doesn't have the performances to back it up. Joke of a person and hopefully never wears the Indian jersey ever again.

He averages around 40 in both odi and test. Not sure whether you are talking about the same player mentioned in the article.

I haven't seen many people who're almost uniformly hated everywhere. Gambhir definitely has some sort of mental illness to isolate himself this way. Not sure if he's unaware of his attitude or acts this way on purpose. I dunno any other WC hero who's bad mouthed this much.

Nope. The guy who is not even known to Kapil Dev.
So far we have seen an Indian fan claim that Gambhir is better than Lara while another claims that Kapil Dec doesn't know who Shahid Afridi is. One of these post should get POTW imo.

Brilliant timing by Sandeep. That went to the boundary like a tracer bullet :ravi

My wife's friend ( a doctor from an influential family from Orissa) was supposed to get (arranged) married to Gambhir and she broke off the marriage.

The problem with Gambhir is that he’s a hothead. And impulsive. I however see no issues with his ‘attitude’. He gave up captaincy and dropped himself from the XI for the team. A guy with ‘I’m the best’ attitude would never do that.

Some members here hate him because he’s patriotic :). Unfortunate. And no, he’s not the most hated cricketer. In fact many Indians like him. He’s not afraid to react and respond.

Gambhir was the number one ranked test batsman in the world at one time and played match winning knocks in two ICC tournament finals. He is 10 times better than Shehzad can ever hope to be.

Couldn’t agree more. One of the main reasons behind Indian success between 2008 and 2011.

Anyone knows why he left dehli daredevils captaincy? And has not even played last few games

Gautam Gamnhir always said that if not cricket he would have been in the army. He is a true patriot who wears his heart on his sleeve. Does not mince words. Double G was one of our finest clutch players. Whenever the heat was on he came out on top. His two knocks in the two world cup finals India won will always remain legendary.

He was the ambassador of India's new street fighting attitude that instilled fear in to the minds of their opponents. One of the most fearless and braveheart cricketers of his generation. We are all glad Watson, Afridi, Kamran are all well and alive today and survived Double G's anger. No doubt he was a bully on field but you cannot doubt he had a heart of diamond.

Sandeep Patio should be ashamed of his comments and actions.

All who conspired against Double G will suffer one day. Please consider it a warning.

Gautam has to be one of the most hated cricketers to play the game.

Sandeep patio should have also mentioned how in the end of his career he turned into a pokemon edging all and sundry to the slips.

I like Gambhir and his always ready for a fight attitude. A player whom I would love to have in my team.

The only reason why I've some grudge against him is because of the fact that he didn't use Shakib properly. He didn't give shakib enough opportunity for kkr to flourish as an allrounder. That's not the right way to deal with an ATG. He should have handled shakib in a better way as a captain.

There is a difference between a patriot and a nationalist. Two entirely different things - for example, both Trump and Agassi are patriots - but only one of them is a nationalist. A debate for another time and another forum.

On the field, Gambhir delivered when it mattered. He and Sehwag were lethal as openers and took the attack to the opposition. Shame his attitude got in the way. Could have done some more big things for his country.

Gautam Gambhir was the hero of two world cup wins (2007 and 2011). No amount of slandering can take that credit away from him.

Gambhir was one of the main reason for our success between (2007 T20WC - 2011 WC).

Sehwag and Tendulkar were brilliant in that period but IMO Gambhir was our most dependable and Clutch batsmen across formats.

Even during his peak years,I don't think Gambhir got credit that he deserved.

India's best captain they never had.

He was a perfect partner in crime to Sehwag for India.

OK I stopped reading from here onwards...

But then I realised the sarcasm. What a post

Liked him as a cricketer. Master of spin and extremely underrated player.
But his attitude is like gully mohallay ka wannabe badmash.. Wish he had better guidance. Another guy who wasted himself and I think his pathetic attitude has a lot to do with it.

His time is absolutely over now. Will not feature in IPL also from next year! So what's the point in commenting now? Sandeep has lost it... Could have been better if he had said this few years back... At least it would have allowed Gambhir to correct if anything and made a comeback!

But Gambhir has won two world cups and two IPLs... He is almost equal to Dhoni in that regard (major tournaments)

He had feuds with wrong person at the wrong time. Otherwise the points he was making was good about indian team which was clinging on to seniors and lost 8 test matches on two tours. Also very unfortunate for him that as soon as he took panga, his form went to crap and he was walking wicket in his last days.

The 2011 England tour was hardly the end of his career. He played both formats for over a year later, and sadly, failed right through. I believe his highest score during this period was an 83 vs Australia in Sydney (after Clarke had piled on 300+), and very little else.

The Angry Young Man attitude is all well and good when you perform. But it looks bad when you don't. That in a nutshell has been Gambhir's career before and after 2011.

I rate him as a player but not as a person.

He is the most boring left handler with batting average of 40+

That's hardly a surprise, he's the kind of character who's always up for a fight.

With regards to his recent failures with the bat, it's mainly because of his new ugly looking open stance that gets him in all kinds of tangles.

Not sure why he changed his technique because it hasn't benefitted him in any way...

He respects his team members a lot. But he has this attitude you find among lot of Delhi guys. Mohinder, Gambhir, Dhawan, Kohli. In your face attitude. Even Viru doesn't have reservation insulting anyone. Contrast to polite Karnataka players Dravid, Kumble, Prasad, Srinath.

Gautam's IPL career seems to have come to an end. He may return next year as a support staff for one of the franchises. He was a very good player for India and was extremely tough mentally. Apart from the two brilliant fifties he scored in the ICC finals, his innings in New Zealand to save a test was phenomenal. That innings helped India to win a test series in NZ.

Maybe he was let known of it privately.

Lol at those Pak PPers using Gambhir's height to demean him.

The fact is - he stood up to your national icons on the field in a manner that shook you (and them) and continues to do so, even today.

Patil talking about attitude is hilarious considering his own playing days. As a selector too, his behavior was poor and bollywood-inspired with public displays for the cameras.

Gambhir was eased out of the team because he was unable to figure out issues that had crept into his game - the most glaring being his inability to avoid prodding at deliveries just outside the offstump.

Eased out? He ran after that bouncer from England and as per the article, he could've stayed and played on but chose the easy way out.

Shook who? Afridi? Didn't seem like it whatsoever.

But I won't burst any bubbles. We are still shook till this date. 🙄

Yes, he really shook Afridi and us with our manchild behavior. Right on the money.

Oh please don't lump kohli with ghambir... did you see the incredibly measured response by Kohli to the Indian media, when they were practically goading and challenging him to respond to Afridi tweet....... it was pretty unsavoury stuff from Indian media.

Getting hit and running away is not a sign of standing up!!

Person criticized his attitude, not his game, so, I can't understand what his world cup performance or else has to do with anything. He was dropped for having an attitude that wasn't suitable for an Indian dressing room, and if you go by Gambir's comments, it isn't hard to believe.

Similarly, Afridi criticized Indian army occupation and indiscriminately killing of innocents. And, for Gambir and his fans to criticized Afridi's performance had nothing to with what he had tweeted. It was pure desperation to defend the indefensible by Indians.

If you are going to defend something then at least do it in a sensible way, and stop making fool out of yourselves.
