Below is the trailer for Karan Johar's new movie being released in February called Ghazi.

It is about the sinking of Pakistan's flagship submarine PNS Ghazi by the Indian Navy during the 71 war.

It seems kinda cool! - I did my research about PNS Ghazi and it turned out it was sunk under very mysterious circumstances off the coast of Visakhapatnam in 1971 with various accounts by Indians, Pakistani's and neutrals. Indians claim their destroyer INS Rajput sank it whilst Pakistan's claim it was an internal accident and one of the mines it was laying accidently detonated.

Feel free to comment on what you know about PNS Ghazi's sinking if you have historical knowledge!

Both sides will show their side of the story. It's like Kargil where we insist a harsh lesson was taught to them where as they would disagree. Similarly, the recent so called surgical strikes by India where the only evidence they have given was word of mouth, I am not buying that for a minute. The truth in cases like sinking of the submarine mostly is somewhere between what both sides say.

Reminds me of a late 90's PTV play based on Ghazi. Was a pretty well made drama (or maybe I was too young and wont like it if I watch it now). Showed the Pakistani version of how the submarine completed its mission in mining an Indian port and then hit one of its own mines.

It was a telefilm - and was called Ghazi Shaheed.

Heard of it as being pretty good but never saw it myself.

Lol, Karan Johar trying hard to get back into Indians good books after a lot them criticised him for hiring Pakistani actors.

One of the reasons why I avoid Bollywood movies.

Pathetic script, CGI etc

Wish they spent some more money on CGI and cast. Such a proud topic deserves more.

Wonder how many songs with dancing ladies this movie will have? Perhaps they will do a song in the submarine right before it sinks

what ??? INS Rajput wasnt a destroyer but a Submarine ? ... LOL .... Indian media just contradicts its own naval history fiction by this so called " based on true event" movie .... :))

becoz all i can see from this trailer is the Ghazi submarine Vs some Indian Submarine .... and no INS Rajput destroyer .... :))

if something is controversial thn you need to look at the neutral sources, such as US investigation etc ....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PNS_Ghazi#Neutral_witnesses_and_assessments

Ghazi got sunk becoz of Internal techincal fault .... so the indian claim that INS Rajput snk the Ghazi is a complete BS .... becoz they have no records about the Ghazi sinking in indian naval history documents ....

PNS Ghazi sunk for unknown reasons: Indian Ex-Navy Chief

Why would any Pakistani go and spend money watching such an anti-Pakistani propaganda movie is beyond me. But each to their own I guess?

INS Rajput was in fact a destroyer - but, as you mentioned, some sources claimed it was still docked at the port in Visakhapatnam where PNS Ghazi sank.

The submarine that the trailer refers in sinking PNS Ghazi is in fact INS Karanj

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/INS_Karanj_(S21)

Whether PNS Ghazi was sank by INS Rajput, INS Karang or by internal accident or mine explosion - no one really knows and remains shrouded in mystery.

I personally will not probably watch this movie but the trailer and the history behind the naval warfare in 1971 is an interesting topic IMO.

Lol that's a bollywood movie? Seeing the name assumed its some Pakistani movie :))

They got the wrong spellings. It should have been Ghaji not Ghazi.

"Inspired by true events", except what they are showing has no merit in actual history, won't be surprised if many in India will believe this actually happened.

Nope PNS Ghazi was the actual name of the submarine.

He was probably being sarcastic. Indians often mispronounce the z as j plus the Urdu/Hindi in recent bollywood films is atrocious. Even in a 2 minute trailer you can spot numerous errors. The Pakistani officer saying 'ise dubana zaroori hai' should be 'ise dubona zaroori hai'. Ghazi being pronounced as Gazi or Gaji. Then the Pakistan navy officers wearing black uniforms instead of white and the Pakistani submarine crew wearing the khakis of the army.

Not to mention that a navy officer named 'Shaik Khadeer' is more likely to be an Arab than a Pakistani. And the Pakistan navy's West Pakistan map showing Kashmir as part of India is the height of irony (without going into the kashmir issue, it is a matter of attention to detail that Pakistani maps of that era showed at least some part of Kashmir in the Pakistan map).

dont think you would have watched regardless unless youre a big bollywood fan

I don't watch generic Bollywood movies but if it is a bit unique I do end up watching. Would have definitely watched this one if it wasn't for the pro-Indian/anti-Pakistani propaganda.

Why is indian propaganda 'kinda cool'?

It's not even cool from an Indian POV. Bollywood churning out endless movies about Pakistan only showcases Indian obsession with their neighbour. Hardly fitting for a country whose aim is to promote their aspirations to be a superpower.

Can you imagine Hollywood producers churning out endless films about Nicaragua? You would assume all Americans suffer from some sort of complex.

About every second Hollywood thriller movie has Russians as the bad guys.

And I couldn't bother myself searching about films featuring Russians as villains since they are dime a dozen.
Here's an article from your beloved BBC on Hollywood Stereotyping Russians as bad guys.

http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/20141106-why-are-russians-always-bad-guys

But yeah only Indians are insecure since it suits the narrative and helps certain people to sleep better at night.

Thanks to the thread, I just finished watching this movie. Loved it for patriotic reasons. Jai Hind. :sachin:

Agreed, and that shows the importance that the Russians held in the American psyche. Russians and Nazis were indeed world superpowers.

Is that how Indians view Pakistan? Personally I always went along with the Indian poster view that it was a failed state. But I see your point in a way, Bollywood's slavish copying of the American movie scene does perhaps require a rogue state and Pakistan can fit the bill.

I think there is a difference between "Indians" and "Bollywood" script writers just like there is a difference between "Americans" and "Hollywood script writers". Script writers need a "villain" for their "story", and often settle upon a convenient nationality.

In the Bollywood movies I have seen over the past few decades, maybe Pakistanis featured as the villain once. I recently saw "Raazi", a story about an Indian spy in Pakistan, and would say it portrayed both nationalities evenly rather than casting Pakistanis as villains.

I can tell you now that in the past few decades, Pakistan will have featured as the villain more than once so your selective viewing/memory doesn't really mean much.

Was a decent movie some of thugs didn’t make sense but otherwise ok..

The "umbrella poisoning" shown in the movie is based on a real life incident involving the Bulgarian secret service.

I was talking about Some stuff in Ghazi being a bit fictional.. But it’s a movie so I guess one can understand why.

In regards to Raazi,

I didn’t know umbrella poisoning was based on a real life incident.. I assumed spies do use such sort of things and since the movie was based in 1960’s/70’s I guess umbrella poisoning might be how spies murdered at that time.. All in all I liked the movie and it wasn’t really anti Pakistan just realistic of the situation both the countries were/and are in since their formation.

Raazi was very very balanced...It was very suprising to see "ae Watan" song is sung by pakistani people in the movie....showing your patriotism is no greather than their patriotism and even the family was shown as very very decent people. Infact it was the indian spy who causes harm to the innocent family...eventually movie questioning how patriotism is killing the humanity in the people involved in the game

Did they show a Pakistani family as very very decent people, and you call it very very balanced?? Time to boycott these Pakistan worshipping movies masquerading as patriotic movies. Showing Pakistanis good is an insult to our great and glorious history and civilization.
