Greatest ODI Team - A Draft [Rules #19]

You need to pick pacers. Some other memebers need batsmen.

From now onwards, most picks will be to 'Balance The Combination'.

This means that best players may not be the one that balances your team.

I know.. please read my post explaining the same :(

I had planned for flower and viv haha thinking rounds threes draft order would be reversed. Now im short of a wk without flower in my team. Tense times

Order -

1. captain crook
2. SL_Fan
3. shady
4. me
5. Major
6. shafkath
7. ahmadharis1

9. silent ischemia
10. Arsalan Pro

should be very interesting, this is where we weed out the people with the cricketing knowledge, and those with less :smith

10th turn!!!!, What will be left for me till then?

You made the right decision in terms of your own team combination but You had one other option. You could have taken Viv. With Flower as your keeper you could have used Sanga as bargaining material or if someone was desperate for wicketkeeper batsman he may have agreed on Flower. It would have been a big gamble but you could have gone for it. I wasn't around to suggest it earlier unfortunately.

Looking at the team you have already you really should not be complaining.

You are right, but I could have taken my team to glory had I received an early turn this round.

Now I will have to pick an unknown player from Zimbabwe.

Help me out bro. One of the bottom picks in this round. Any suggestions?

Don't worry too much, I am pretty much aware how this works. As per rules nobody can get get 1st, 2nd or 9th, 10th turn again.

Now, one of you and I will get 1st pick in the Ban and Eng round and other one the 2nd, so you can pick a WK then. Also SL_Fan and Da_Future_Kick will get 9th and 10th picks, so be ready.

Dude, Zimbabwe had an amazing team during the early noughties. I will not give you any hints but there were some mavericks who can fill the gaps in most teams. Just need to think well.

Love you bro :))). But getting to pick first from a legendary pool of players is overwhelming :danish

Will post my choices very very soon!

don't love me, it's the pick of the draw

The system makes it so everyone will be top 2 and bottom 2 at some stage

Very very tough for me and I feel ashamed that I won't get hold of the greatest batsman of all time even when I have the choice. I should have foreseen this in some of my earlier picks. Team balance is a bit*h. Now I know the difficulty :(

Anyway.. these are my picks - Andy Flower (Zimbabwe) and Big bird Joel Garner (West Indies).

Here's my team then -

1. Sehwag
2. Astle
3. Sangakara (K)
4. Andy Flower
5. Inzamam
6.
7. Klusener
8.
9.
10. Garner
11. McGrath

Over to you SL_Fan.. you will have him for sure now.. those pace bowlers and Viv.. godly combo

Garner is a very good pick

Help me out bro. One of the bottom picks in this round. Any suggestions?

You absolutely have to nab a good fast bowler from West Indies. Your biggest advantage is the fact that you have a World Class ODI spinner in saqlain. You need pace bowlers and if you are going to make any trades it should be one of your batsmen for fast bowlers. Don't trade Saqlain no matter what.

I can't help much with the Zimbabwe pick unfortunately. The good ones I know of would probably be picked already by then.

Who do you plan to have as an opening partner for Sachin? Jayawardane has a brilliant record as opener you can check it out. Kallis is going to be your number 3.

Since you are bottom 3 in this round according to the rules you should be in the top 3 in the next round. That's England and Bangladesh. You will have some good picks there.

Nope, according to rules everyone will be once in 9th or 10th and he hasn't been so far, so he will be in that position most probably.

Okay then my next picks are Eoin Morgan if we are allowed associate picks as well this round or Brendan Taylor and the one and only king Sir Viv Richards. Come to papa!

Kinda feel bad now tbh :10:

Firts off, you guys were the ones asking for a change, second I don't think how it makes a difference. You have an even larger variety in the final round.

I'm gonna have to put my foot down now (sorry lads), no more changes, no random posters making picks for any one else. I gave permission specifically to SL_Fan because whoeevr is making the picks are doing it through his one account.

I hope that's settled. Round 4 pick order coming in.

dildildalwalla are associate players also allowed for Zim/BD picks chief or have we ditched that one.

shady your turn buddy.

I was gonna open with Bmac and Jaywardene and bring Sachin at 3.

Definitely need a few good pace bowlers though.

I was expecting Sehwag. But Yuvraj was an equivalent.

Yeah was going back and forth over those two :)) Thought Yuvi would add a bit with the ball and on the field as well so went with him.

My offer is still on the table champ. Let me know if you want to work something out after this round or at the end :baelish

No worries champ will have to pass on that one. If you change your mind let me know.

Are we allowed to pick from associates this round or is it just Zimbabwe? I'm gonna assume it's just Zimbabwe and take Brian Lara and Heath Streak.

XI so far:

1.Martin Guptill
2.Adam Gilchrist
3.Javed Miandad
4.Brian Lara
5.
6.
7.Heath Streak
8.Kapil Dev
9.
10.Dale Steyn
11.Muttiah Muralitharan

dildildalwalla your turn chief.

Fellas don't forget to tag the next one in line after you make your picks. Will help move things along a lot quicker.

This is turning out to be a great thread. Absolutely great work by the OP. Some really great picks from our PP masters too.More fun coming up in further rounds too.

Havinga look at your team, well, you have got arguably two of the three greatest odi bowlers of all time and then a top quality finisher who could bowl too.

With that attack, 300+ total are hard to put and as a result, you dont need much firepower but some quality clutch middle order players which you already got in form of Sanga/Inzy/Flower.

Sehwag would do the initial damage too and there is a Klusenar for finishing off things in latter part. You should eye for a spinner from somewhere.

My team up till now:

T Dilshan
?
V Kohli
A De Villiers
?
?
I Khan(C)
R Hadlee
?
B Lee
?

Another solid team. Lee, Hadlee and Khan are undoubtedly all time great cricketers and then that dream middle order of Virat Kohli and Abdv under the leadership of Khan makes it a pretty balanced and destructive side on its day. Dilshan is no small deal either.

1) B Mac
2) Mahela Jaywardene
3) Sachin Tendulkar
4) Jacque Kallis
5) Michael Hussey
6) ??
7) ??
8) ??
9) Saqlain Mushtaq
10) ??
11) ??

Need a good lower order hitter and a few pace bowlers. Hopefully I can pull off a trade or two.

Agreed. The next round is going to be crucial!

Some terrific batsmen in your team. Saqi is an awesome pick and Kallis is no mug with the ball either. But clearly not much firepower with the ball. Let's see how the trade goes ;-)

no associate players allowed this round, so just keep your non associate player (u might still have a chance with Morgan if you get a good Eng pick)

11. C. Ambrose

Very lucky to get someone with Ambrose's quality this round. And needed an opener so in comes Grant.

All right chief not me I'm worried about tho. Last few Zim picks gonna be tough going. Another idea is maybe to allow associates as well for the bottom half of the draft order. Anyways let's see how things go.

Next up

5. Major 6. shafkath 7. ahmadharis1 8. Da_Future_Knick 9. silent ischemia 10. Arsalan Pro

Bro.. there are some amazing players from Zim. Just need to pick them carefully based on team balance. Picking players from Bangladesh is going to tough though. There are not many players to choose from.

Micheal holding and gream hick. If hick isnt accepted then tatenda taibu

Delighted to have the chance to pick neil johnson, thought he may have gone by now. 3 man of the match awards in the 99 world cup. Hes gna open the batting for me and give me another good bowling option.

My windies pick is Gordon Greenidge. Beligerant batsmen in an era of attritional cricket, these two will be my openers with gibbs slipping down to 3 which is where he scored 175 in the greatest odi of all time.

Yeah, Zimb have a better list of players than Bang, although the latter have some ok-ish guys over the last few years.

I dont think HIck played any full internationals for ZImbabwe but I may be wrong. I have however checked cricinfo and all his internationals are for England . But it was a clever choice, never thought of that.

So you can have Taibu and Holding.

Man, the great Greenidge would have been my pick if I didn't need a pace bowler so badly.

Major has Taibu and Holding

shafkath has N. Johnson and Greenidge
ahmadharis1 next, btw did you take your pick for round 3?

I was close to picking Marshall. But Greenidge got in ahead for me.

"Never in the game has there been a more withering and dismissive square-cut, nor a more willing and able hooker and puller, but he drove mightily too on both sides of the wicket." This is what his cricinfo profile states.

High praise indeed, i love watching an attacking batsmen whos aggressive against short quick bowling.

dildildalwalla did u see Greenidge play or are you going off old videos

Not sure about the amazing bit bruz :))

I guess there are still 2/3 half decent ones left but then again might not be for everyone when looking at team composition. So gonna be brutal. Same with BD yikes! :broad

ahmadharis1 where are ya bud. Plus yet to make picks for last round as well.

Haha SL_Fan ... major wasnt the first pick so maybe he didn't want taibu. Im sure he was after andy flower

Surely you're not suggesting that handy Andy is a better pick than the great Tatenda Taibu are ya champ :ronaldo

From CI

Tatenda Taibu was for a long time Zimbabwe's only batsman of true Test quality in all conditions. For a period of about two years from the start of 2000s he was so phenomenally consistent that he has no rival as the best player in Zimbabwe's history.

SL_Fan what's the line-up looking like boss?

Been busy but should be free next couple weeks so do fill me up pl0x :baelish

Neil Johnson would had been my pick if i didnt need a keeper.

Taibu was always on my mind. I knew brendan and andy would be gone in the first two picks. And taibu was a really good player.

Its sad that he had to end his career for religious obligations

Posters shouldn't look at stats for Zimbabwe players. There are many good Zimbabwe players who had bad stats. But they were very good players.

Goodwin, Duncan Fletcher, Campbell and many more

Atapattu
Ganguly
.
Martyn
Misbah
Tatenda Taibu
Chris Cairns
Micheal holding
Makhaya Ntini
.
.

I have one weak team :p

Finally figured out where ahmedharis1 is.

I was reading a thread this morning and he said he will be traveling to the WI for the third test, probably no wifi out there.
