What's new

Gym and Fitness Advice thread!

Barely two months left until summer. Hope Y'all starving yourselves well.

Maybe it's just me, but I hate people wearing tighter shirts. It's stupid on so many levels. It's like saying I've worked very hard to get into a university, but I will go to a college instead to be the smartest out of everyone else. Why wear tight shirts just to make yourself feel good? Making your larger shirts tighter should be your goal.

Some very strange advice in this thread.

1. Preworkout is fine

2. Weight belts are not more useful if you are lifting more; if your core is strong enough you will not need it unless you are pushing a sh!t-ton of weight

3. Eat. No bodybuilding diet (read *bodybuilding*) is complete without carbs. You cannot and will not grow without carbs.

4. Lift heavy; vast majority of barriers in the gym are just barriers in your mind.

I know pre-workout is fine, I was just saying you'll get addicted in no time.

I will also need evidence of your ability to deadlift 445lb at claimed 175lb bodyweight .. lol

What if somebody has actually done it (made his loose shirt tight by working out) but you think he is wearing a tighter shirt just to show off? :msd:

Buy a new one?

What if its his favourite shirt? :)) no i am just stretching it now.

I agree with you on showing off. There are few of such kind in my gym and to be honest they just have average physiques but they think highly of themselves.

445 is not even that impressive. The fact that you're asking me for a proof is just saying a lot about how weak you are.

Just realized that Ramadan is coming up. Might have to cop a 24-hour membership at Fit4Less (the worst gym ever made).

Wishing him a speedy recovery. Stuff happens sometimes.

So Ive been training properly for a good six months now (avg 4-5 days a week - focused training with back, chest, shoulders, arms and legs in a row.) And more importantly its showing in terms of aesthetics. When I used to row back in college my stamina was crazy and while my body was well defined and had little fat there wasnt a lot of apparent muscle. So this is good progress. Im sure the protein shake helped as I had never taken it before late last year

One thing I was unhappy about is that I wasnt getting nearly enough cardio in. I still had some belly fat (no one can tell really so not the main issue but its there) and I wasnt sure about my stamina levels - it had fallen alarmingly in the past couple of years as I had found out on a hiking trip up north.

Anyways my routine was that before the workout I would do minimal time on the treadmill. However it was always under 10 mins and sometimes closer to 5 mins because I just cant motivate myself enough to do the cardi grind and run aimlessly on the treadmill. Heck I was putting the incline really high hoping that that would somewhat make up for the poor time I was putting in.

To remedy this ,in the past week I ended up spending money on a good road race cycle (or whatever they are called) and joined a friend's group who cycle regularly. I was pleasantly surprised with my stamina because the last time I had done something testing the limits of my cardio I had struggled. On Saturday I put in 40kms and yesterday evening did 25kms.

I am happy with this and hopefully if I can do this 3-4 times a week and also do the regular 4-5 times a week workout I think I can move towards the ideal shape!

Anyways has anyone here taken up cycling before? Is a 40km distance anything to be happy about even (it was mostly flat road).

Controlling my diet and having it be termed 'healthy' is the final frontier.

I probably eat healthier than vast majority of Pakistani millenials but Im sure its still unhealthy

I don't cycle but one of my friend is cycling aficionado. He cycles here in Riyadh on a track that is mostly on flat roads with few inclined surfaces but has lot of curves. He goes 50 km on his weekends and some where between 25k and 50k on weekdays. He also takes part in 25 km cycle races here. So from a layman's point of view, I guess you are doing good distance wise.

GOAT.

Waiting for it to get colder so I can start bulking up. The problem is even in Winter it can hit Summer temps down under so always gotta stay in shape for those beach days :(

Been lifting (consistently) for about a month and a half, but not feeling sore anymore post upper body workout. I'm not strong enough yet to move onto heavier weights as I've tried, but does not getting sore anymore mean that you're not gaining anything more? Newbie question.

Still feel sore after legs tho lol

Are you going to failure?

Are you going to failure?

Yes, but then I can't complete the repetitions I'm trying to hit for that set, so have to switch to a lighter weight for the remainder. But usually I get done with half or more of the required reps.

So if I have to do 12 reps, I get about 6 done and out of the way to failure, then switch to a lighter weight to complete the 12.

Why wouldn't you just start a new set once you switch the weights? Instead of doing 6 after switching weights, do 12. It's called a drop set.

Actually, ask someone to check your form. You're probably doing the exercises incorrectly.

I think there is such a lack of education from the general population when it comes to fitness. Which I really don't get because there is so much info out there with one google search. I just had a friend who has been on and off from the gym for 3 years "how can I lose fat only from my belly"...... *facepalm*

Apart from lack of awareness I think another problem is the concept of "on season and off season". Now for many motivated people this is nice but generally people are lazy and not motivated enough. Many people lose a lot of progress because they lose the habit of hitting the gym regularly during their off season. Exercise should be made a part of daily lifestyle rather than assigning a window of like 4 or 5 months to it. I am speaking from personal experience and what works for me. Maybe some people find having off seasons more effective.

Curious to know what this off season is for all you young singletons?

It depends on location and lifestyle. Some people have an off season for few months in winters and then begin working out as spring arrives to be able to get in and stay in shape for summers when they cant hide their bellies under big baggy jackets and other clothes.

I personally think its very hard to stay motivated like this because the break which one takes in between kills the habit of hitting the gym. Its very hard to drag yourself to the gym later on.

The off season here means no training at gym.

To me, off season would be actual heavy training as you would have more time to devote to it.

Y'all down to post your pictures? I just wanna know if I have any competition on here.

Still skinny, but less skinny:yk2

I don't know why it's sideways:((

Nice. You just have to be eating more. I roughly eat around 4000 calories a day when I'm bulking.

The highest I've ever gone is 5600 and just don't ask what happened afterwards. You're smart enough to figure that one on your own.

How did you even eat that much what the hell:))

Just went for a 465 deadlift today and it was light work. Only a matter of time now.

What tips would you have for a tall guy like me? I'm 6 foot 4. Being tall has a lot of benefits :) but when it comes to trying to bulk up, it's harder than for the average height guy.

How many calories are you eating a day?

About 3200 calories. Oats, Rice, Pasta, Chicken, Lean Beef, Fish, Peanut Butter, Yogurts are staples in my diets.

What? That is weird. You should be gaining weight if you're eating that many a day. Seems like your metabolism is messed up. Start pushing yourself more in the gym. Not that using lighter weights is a bad thing, but you might just have to start going heavier. Try supplementation also.

I do gain weight and strength but when I meant help, I meant mainly for the exercises. For example, I've heard things like tall people with long legs (mine are very long) should do sumo deadlifts instead of standard deadlifts.

Might be competing next year. I don't really have any desire to but my gym partner is insistent so may as well.

Do you eat 3 big meals or just several small meals throughout the day?
