Six teams played thrilling matches to start the 2024 Lanka T10 Super League

Six teams played thrilling matches to start the 2024 Lanka T10 Super League season at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy. Exciting matches were played on the first day with the Galle Marvels playing the Kandy Bolts, the Colombo Jaguars playing the Nuwara Eliya Kings, and the Jaffna Titans playing the Hambantota Bangla Tigers. While the Hambantota Bangla Tigers, captained by Dasun Shanaka, suffered an 8-wicket defeat to the Jaffna Titans, it was Shanaka who truly captured the hearts of 7000 Sri Lankan attendees who were present despite the stadium receiving the heaviest showers.

Despite Mohammad Amir's early breakthrough dismissing Kusal Perera, Dasun Shanaka's partnership with Mohammad Shahzad (22 off 15) demonstrated why he's considered Sri Lanka's premier power hitter. The national hero's presence drew passionate fans to the grandstands, with supporters clamoring for photographs and handshakes, showcasing his status as Sri Lanka's newest cricket icon.

In a spectacular display of power hitting reminiscent of Sri Lankan legend Tillakaratne Dilshan, who revolutionized T20 cricket with his innovative "Dilscoop" and aggressive batting style, Dasun Shanaka the skipper delivered a masterclass in the tournament's opening match. The Jaffna Titans secured a commanding 8-wicket victory over Hambantota Bangla Tigers, but it was Shanaka's brilliant 51 off just 17 deliveries, featuring five towering sixes and four boundaries, that captured the imagination of the crowd.

The second game between the Colombo Jaguars and Nuwara Eliya Kings was rained out but over 7000 loyal supporters were still dispersed throughout the unique viewing areas of Pallekele International Stadium. The main grandstand of the stadium with its distinctive seats and roof cover was crammed full as it extended along the eastern side. A festival-like atmosphere was created by the well-known grass embankment areas especially the natural slopes at either end of the ground that are typical of Sri Lankan cricket venues. Families and young fans without umbrellas set up their viewing spots and mats in spite of the drizzle.

Indian Team Owner Arrested Over Match-Fixing In Lanka T10 League

An Indian national who owns a franchise in the Lanka T10 League has been arrested by Sri Lanka's sports police following allegations of match-fixing. Prem Thakur was arrested on Thursday for match-fixing in the Lanka T10 league being played in the central district of Kandy's Pallekele stadium. “The owner of the ‘Galle Marvels' team in the Lanka T10 Super League, was arrested and will be produced before court on Friday," Police said.

The Galle Marvels is one of the six teams in the tournament.

His arrest on Thursday has come following a complaint lodged by a teammate, an overseas player from the West Indies who had rejected his request to fix a match.

Authorities are now investigating the incident, which has raised concerns about the integrity of the inaugural Lanka T10 tournament.

This is the inaugural edition of the Lanka T10 Super League.

T10 is a difficult and challenging format for bowlers: Charith Asalanka

Sri Lanka batter Charith Asalanka who is a part of Jaffna Titans in Lanka T10 Super League which is taking place at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium has said that the shortest format of the game is certainly a challenging one for bowlers.

"It's really hard to bowl in T10. A bowler just gets two overs and it becomes tricky for him. But it also depends on how you are playing on that particular day because sometimes bowlers have something on offer from the pitches and sometimes the tracks help the batters," he said.

The left-handed batter believes that scoring runs as a batter is the key to success, no matter what form of the game it is.
"We are here to score runs for our team and that's our job and that's what everyone is expecting from us. I think no matter the format is, we have to score runs," Asalanka said.

Titans have some prominent names in the unit such as David Wiese and Kusal Mendis and Asalanka is of the opinion that it's a great opportunity for youngsters to enhance their skills.

Hambantota Bangla Tigers crowned champions of Lanka T10 Super League

Jaffna Titans had thoroughly dominated the first edition of Lanka T10 Super League and Hambantota Bangla Tigers during the tournament. But the Tigers roared back when it was most needed against the same opposition. Hambantota Bangla Tigers were crowned the first champions after they defeated Titans by 26 runs in the title clash.

Bangla Tigers had put up a big total of 133/7 on the board in 10 overs, courtesy some power-hitting from Mohammad Shahzad, captain Dasun Shanaka, Shevon Daniel which was followed by a late surge from Kennar Lewis and Dhananjaya Lakshan.

Openers Shahzad who struck 26 off 11 and Kusal Perera stitched an opening stand of 35 runs in 4.2 overs but lost a few wickets in regular intervals to get reduced to 59/3. Shanaka then joined hands with Daniel and the two scored a partnership of 44 runs for the fourth wicket before the skipper eventually departed for 21 off 10. Daniel struck 26 off 15.

Later, Lewis (10 off 4) and Lakshan (10* off 2) then pushed the paddle and contributed some valuable runs lower down the order.

The Titans never really had the start they wanted barring the first over where the side managed to collect 17 runs. They lost wickets at regular intervals and were pushed on the backfoot by the Hambantota bowlers. Richard Gleeson was the pick of the bowlers after he returned with figures of 3/21 in two overs while Shanaka scalped a couple of wickets for 4 runs in one over.
Tom Abell was the lone warrior for Jaffna as he returned unbeaten at 54 off 27.
