Hamid Ansari for those who don't know is an Indian stuck in a Pakistani prison in Peshawar. After meeting a Pak girl over the Internet he tried to save her from forced marriage by illegally entering Pak through Afghanistan. Other reports say that he had fallen in love with her and wanted to marry her completely ignorant of traditional Pathani culture. There is no way that the girls parents and family would have allowed her to marry an Indian even if he was Muslim however he believed he could convince them "Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge" style. His Pakistani Facebook friends gave him the worst possibly advice then left him high and dry after he was caught by security forces. Hamid has spent much more time in prison then the three years he was sentenced and continues to rot away that is killing his parents in Mumbai. The lady he went to meet is now married to a Pakistani man, some say Hamid was set up by the girl who herself was a spy. His parents have exhausted all possible means of trying to secure his release and were recently unsuccessful is securing a meeting with Sartaj Aziz in Amritsar.

He needs to be released ASAP if he has served his sentence.

Pardon my ignorance but why's that? Are Pushtuns so uptight about marrying within their own?

The Guy is a Muslim so I guess as per Islamic Law it's legal and allowed. So why not?

Coz many still follow the Jirga system that is an ancient Pathan way of deciding things where women have little say on matters. To them Islamic law does not matter much when the man or lady is from the sworn enemy country. I have a good many friends in Peshawar who all feel this way. They don't like Indian Muslim's and that is putting it very lightly. Mind you, it's a complete myth that all Pathan's are beautiful, many if not most are average at best. Many people especially Indian's have a weird fascination about them. Glad to be a Punjabi!

He has served his sentence so has to be released now. Thing is that in Indo-Pak relations the culprit can not be punished enough. They are falsely accused of things they know nothing about. If India offers to release a few Pak prisoners who have served their sentence then perhaps the latter will reciprocate by letting Hamid go. His family have spent all they have in trying to get their only child back. Sometimes we have to think as human beings.

There are also many forward thinking people in both communities that don't care about ethnicity.

However, your comment of "glad to be Punjabi" is ignorant in the context you gave.

It has nothing to do with someone from an enemy country.

As per traditional Pashtun customs, they marry within their own people, many times within their own tribe.

They are not too accepting of marriage even to non-pashtun Pakistanis.

On the other hand, there are also many Punjabis that look down upon darker skinned people, they care a lot about if someone is a "Syed". Even many Punjabis would not let with daughters/sons marry a Pashtun due to the cultural differences.

There is nothing ignorant about my comments. All I am suggesting is that I love Punjabi culture but not at the expense of the Pathan one. Our Pathan's are amongst the most patriotic Pakistanis in the country. I do know some Pathan's who have married non-Pathan Pakistanis, IK's first wife Jemima was no Pathan for starters. I think it's more of a language barrier then anything else when it comes to Pathan-Punjabi marriages. For obvious reasons tribal or traditional Pathan's will never consider an Indian.

Not for a second I buy this story..

He was probably a spy and was caught thus convicted..

End of ..

Why did he illegally enter through Afghanistan instead of getting a visa?

Well doesn't seem to have many working brain cells this one...

Yer the story doesn't add up well for him and not even close to be compared to Sarabjit,as already someone stated why did he not try to get a visa ,although i do agree how the interview would had gone.

Basically, this. It's a huge, and tbh ridiculous, generalization to say that Pukhtuns(or Punjabis for that matter) don't marry outside their own period. There are those that don't and there are also millions who do. I can think of at least ten or so cases in my family where one spouse is Pukhtun and the other something else(mostly Hindko speakers, but there's one Punjabi and even an Urdu speaker). On the flip side, a close friend of mine is borderline suicidal(what is usually referred to as "majnoo" in local parlance) because his Arain parents are opposed to him marrying outside the caste and the girl he's with is a Hindko speaker from Attock. You can switch any Pakistani ethnicity for Arain/Hindko speaker in that example and it would be a pretty plausible scenario in Pakistan because no ethnic group has a monopoly on being close minded idiots nor does any ethnic group have a monopoly on enlightenment.

Pakistan is so backward in this area, people should marry whoever the heck they want.

He has done his time and should be released as should be the many Pak prisoners in India in similar positions. Let this be a lesson to those who enter any country especially that of the major enemy without proper documents. There is no way he would have escaped the ISI and any other agency who dominate the KPK and Kohat region where he wanted to go. Even if he had reached his destination the family of the girl would have immediately handed him over to the police. There was no chance of him ever even getting close to that girl for a chat never mind anything else as our "kabalayi" Pathans are very sensitive about their women. An immature and mislead lad given the wrong advice could mean he is never released at all. There is no pressure on the Pak government or ISI to let him go.
