I heard, the day after Diwali there is a cloud of smoke all over the major cities in India because of the amount of crackers that are used the previous night.

This event must be a huge inconvenience for the old folks and the sick.

Yep. I, for one, won't be complaining if these crackers are banned because they are a nuisance but atleast where i live crackers are not popular as they were during my childhood. Thank God for that.

Holi is a much better festival to celebrate :)

Agreed, I went to a Holi event once. It was hella fun..

Happy Diwali.
Considering Delhi's pollution , i won't buy firecrackers this time. I'll use that money to buy some more fancy lights instead.

I am very happy to see that Hindu community is now being open to the opposition of firecrackers. Even though I am a big fan of fireworks, I personally have started using less and less fireworks every year to stop creating pollution.

Need to ban the Diwali bombs and rockets.

Eagerly awaiting that day.

All this opposition to firecrackers reminds me of my childhood days, we used to buy all assortment of crackers after Friday prayers and blast them all afternoon till the evening and then in the evening play tape ball cricket in the same gully.

One fine day Mush banned all firecrackers but we could still easily buy them. We were as usual indulging in our tomfoolery when a police wagon heard our crackers from a couple of blocks away and came racing in. They asked us "oye phatakay kaun phaar raha". We all innocently replied "sir woh apko dekh ke bhag gaye"..

Dodged a bullet on that one :afridi

My first deepawali in TN. Today morning the paper boy came and knocked the door. I opened the door half asleep and then he asked me Akka, diwali bonus enge? I was like wth is this diwali bonus? :))) But the boy told me it is some extra pay he gets during the diwali. I liked him and gave some extra money to buy crackers. Also wished a Happy diwali.

Anyways happy diwali to everyone here.:)

Haha we say deepawali in here.

Learnt to speak proper Tamil?

Pakpassion is filled with weak, upper class sophisticated Hindus. You won't see these fake liberal pseudo secularists even so much as mention environment the whole year but as soon as Diwali is round the corner these fekus will crawl out of their hole and start crying about pollution, noise etc. It's just one friggin day ffs.You don't like it fine but don't expect others show fake concern as well. Crackers are here to stay.Simple as.Happy Diwali.

Bro, I think banning firecrackers especially for Diwali will be taken in the wrong way. It must be made to appear secular, so that the environmental issue is not hijacked by the religious right.

Yeah...the focus should be mainly on the environmental issue.

I think we can start off with bombs and rockets.

Fulchadi, Chakra, etc cause pollution too but atleast they don't torture everyone (especially elders) with the noise pollution. Bombs are the worst. Rockets are dangerous if the bottles fall down while lighting them.

Total ban of all firecrackers may or may not be feasible for now but we can start somewhere.

I feel there is nothing wrong in allowing a small window to celebrate an important festival in our culture. So personally I wouldn't want a total ban (though I wouldn't mind it if it happens). Just need to control the monstrosity. Maybe have a limit on the number of firecrackers being sold or think of something else to reduce the pollution. Over time, people will lose interest. Feel it has already started.

Well, most studied in schools with names like St. Xavier's, St Joseph's, St Patrick's and not from some Vidya Niketan, so it is understandable that they would be more concerned about the environment.

Diwali was never about crackers. Lighting a few Diyas is enough. That's how it should be.

Firecrackers are nothing but headache for old people and animals and birds. Not to forget the pollution and the trash it creates in the neighborhood.

It's deepavali not patackhavali.

Most poor people in the cities and in villages really look forward to this festival and their sole source of enjoyment is bursting crackers with their kids and friends.I suggest these burger kids to venture out of their mansion for once and see the diwali mahol in the nearby slum.Just because these nawabzades prefer sound free Diwali doesn't mean every other person share their opinion as well.I agree they should ban crackers near hospitals etc but a complete ban is ridiculous to say the least and hopefully would never be implemented. At least not in our lifetime.

You stay in America then.Indians can think for themselves. We don't need NRI expert opinions thank you very much.

And the contrarians would do well to come and visit houses where there are elder people who suffer a lot in Diwali.

Screw the noise pollution. We all live with that for 1 day.

Its the sound pollution which is the worst.

The sound of a bomb going off every 2 minutes is pure torture.

The sooner government bans it, the better for everyone.

Do you know how much pollution is released on the Diwali in India. The level of emissions on the Diwali day are crazy and huge public safety hazard. Regardless, I am with you that this pollution should not be limited to Diwali but year around. But the impact of reminding on Diwali plays a big role in public awareness.

If only us Indians showed the same concern for elders throughout the year like we pretend to do on diwali , there would be lot less family dramas in this country.

That's the point I'm trying to make.I'm all for pollution control. But you would rarely see these convent educated spoilt brats even so much as whisper about environment whole year but comes the diwali and their inner environmentalist wakes up.

Don't know if its a genuine comment or sarcastic comment.

But assuming its sarcastic due to use in this context:

Way to twist an argument.

So since we don't show such concern to elders, why not let others come and kick them around?

We don't seem to care anyways and apparently the concept of "extent" is lost on us.

Also because some Joe Blow treats his parents badly, an average person doesn't have the right to voice concern about Diwali noise affecting everyone in the house (especially elders).

Love Diwali, but usually have to stay indoors because of my asthma problem. But I do really love the festive environment, the lights and the crackers.

Happy Diwali to everyone.

There are a lot of ways to reduce air pollution. There is no need to ban firecrackers on a day that comes once a year.

Stop using Cars and Motorbikes too if you care so much about Pollution.

Ride a Bicycle everywhere, nice eco-friendly alternative.

The automobiles that you use throughout the year cause much more damage to environment than Diwali can in 1-2 days.

Guys, this is a thread to wish others, not to indulge in debates. Whether you burn crackers or not, this diwali burn your ego and hatred.

Happy Deepavali to everyone.

Stop whining about the fire crackers. If you have any problem celebrating the Hindu festival, go to Pakistan.

I agree.

They'll talk about environment yet, don't hesitate to use plastics.

Fire crackers are here to stay.

Top post. there's nothing wrong in banning firecrackers when the festival is about lights anyway.

Firecrackers should be banned altogether. Weddings, victory celebrations and Dipawali make lot of noise and air pollution.

Happy Deepavali to everyone.

Sorry, Pakistanis also celebrate Diwali and its a National Holiday here. so they can go to Tambak-to. :yk

And Ofcourse. Happy Diwali everyone!

Lol reminds me of new trend of some Muslims saying qurbani in eid ul Azha is inhumane. The irony is they are all meat lovers. So just cause the animal is being sacrificed in front of you makes it different from the animals sacrificed for the meat you eat everyday?

I am one strong, middle class Hindu, and I cannot close my eyes to these problems. My younger brother (who is 21) heads to the mountains every Diwali week just because elevated pollution levels in Delhi affect him badly. Thousands of older people have breathing difficulties..how can we ignore that?

The excuses people find to justify poisoning the air are so ridiculous. This has nothing to do with being liberal, or a pseudo secular. The problem is very real, and we cannot risk people's health just because a certain section of society isn't aware of the consequences of their actions.

But who will solve the daily problems? People who are making noise 3 days per year should make sure that real problems also get solved.

The daily problems can't be solved, that's a given. But does that justify making things worse?

Let's say Diwali led to 50% more pollution levels for a week, I would be fine with that. But when that number approaches 500% or more, then we need to stop this madness. Why risk people's life for your 2 hour enjoyment?

What is the use of solving only one weeks problem if no one really wants to solve bigger problem? Problem here is some people try to push their own agendas during certain festivals while conveniently ignoring bigger issues.

So, saving people from severe health risks isn't useful enough? Check the numbers and you will realize that this is THE week when pollution gets to a level where many cannot tolerate it.

In which places? Mostly in cities you get pollution which is already in dangerous level..do you think in small towns or rural areas pollution drastically changes due to one week?

Exactly, and then we make it 10 times worse with added toxicity, which can never be a good idea. As for smaller towns and rural areas, if things don't get this bad, then there is absolutely no problem with 2 days of celebration.

Yes vast majority of them are, like 90% maybe. But Tamil Hindus and Christians get along well. We go to church some times here and there. Culture and history is so strong that religion doesn't divide us really. Inter-religious marriages are very common among Tamil Hindus and Christians. Two of my cousins are married to a Christian counter part and another one is about to.

Happy Deepavali to you as well brother.

Even in cities it's certain clusters we will have issues which should be maintained by communities, blanket bans should not be imposed.

So what did those celebrating have to eat all day?. What were the snacks, breakfast, lunch and dinner? That's what I want to know. I've recently become a foodie.

Tbh even though people make amazing food for diwali, so many mithais/sweets boxes are distributed among families and friends. Everyone has 10-15 boxes of sweets left. All you then eat is mithai, mithai whole time. I easiky have had 15 different kinda mithai just today. And I am a health freak who barely eat sugar.

Sweets aside what real food did you have?

Lots of crackers going off near my place too. Have fun, folks. :)

Apart from sweets, we eat a lot of fried snacks like mathiya, chorafali, poha, ghughra (a sweet) and thapda. It varies a lot depending on where you're from.

Seems as you all live on matheyi! No rice dishes, samosa's, pakora's or curries, things like that?

We tend to eat rice and curries throughout the year, so you don't see many people eating those dishes during this time. But it varies across the states, I doubt most people outside of Gujarat eat those things I mentioned.
