Jokes aside, happy Holi to all of our Indian posters. Why is Holi celebrated anyway - what is its significance in Hinduism if I may ask?

According to a legend, baby Krishna was concerned whether girls out there, especially 'Radha' would love him because of his dark appearance. Later on someone suggested him to colour Radha also and then they started dating and from then on people have been celebrating this by colouring each other on this festival as a mark of love.

So if some Indian boy or girl throws colours at you, don't get annoyed, because its Holi. :yk

Happy holi guys.

And why is holi celebrated on different dates every year? I've noticed over the years that its celebrated on different days every year.

That is regarding the bon fire celebrations. Colouring is linked to Krishna's antics in Gokul. :asadrauf

Lunar calendar madam. It is to be celebrated on the day of Falgun Purnima.

India is the real rainbow nation. So many colors, so many languages, different cultures. Few days back I was in Andhra Pradesh, lol. No idea what they were talking but somehow managed to reach the address. Great people.

Happy Holi to everyone out there, except those who criticise MS Dhoni too heavily.

DeadlyVenom bhai is misunderstood! He is one of those guys who come down hard on a country just because they want it to improve, hence just highlighting and addressing the existing issues.

Otherwise, I have in my inside informations that he donates 30 Pounds monthly to the Shiv Sena organisation.

Worst festival ever!
This evening I was happily strolling to my room , thinking about good old days and *bam* some stupid 7 year old decided to throw a color balloon on me which burst on my head. Got soaked through not to mention the unwashable stains. Worse I couldn't even do anything since it's Holi and his dad is a goddamn 7 ft Sardar ji.

Where did you get this crap from?

The white people have been celebrating it here for the past few years too, although it has more of a Woodstock feel to it. It's a couple of kilometres from where I live. But I see many students pass by with colors and champagne bottles ready.

They used to do it in my college as well when it was introduced my junior year. Used to take place in the quad

Heck... What used to happen is that all the American kids would take over and turn it into a color war and party. The Indians who actually organised it would be sidelined lol and end up having to leave their own event.

I would guess half the people didn't even know what Holi was and that this was just not another party since the music would be taken over as well.

Never actually seen it in real life, but in Bollywood films it always looks like a really fun occasion. But in real life they probably don't have those catchy tunes and cavorting models getting the rang thrown at them. Anyway, happy Holi for our valued Indian members.

When we conquer Travencore , You shall be my favorite slave.

You Wish ! I'll have escaped to Amreeka by then and started funding secessionist "Chera-nadu" movements from your Kingdom .

Chera Nadu that sounds like a name for some cheap underwear brand.

That is the name of one of the most influential Hindu empires in South Indian history. We used to have trade with Rome and Greece back when north India was just people running around on horses. And they were pretty decent people too, no caste system for most of their existence. They weren't even technically hindus actually .

Even the name kerala comes from Chera-alam - Land of Cheras .

Oh I know all about that sh!t.
Fun fact - Pepper was so valuable in the ancient Rome that it went by the name of Black Gold and Kerala was one of it's chief exporters. In fact Pliny writes that the demand for Indian spices was so high among the Roman nobility that it was feared that the trade was shifted heavily in India's favor and that Rome was being drained off the bullion!

SandyB Wait North Indians running around on horses? Whaaaaaaaaat?

That was a play on the Aryans/Nomads (or whatever you can call them) invading from the North west of India. Apparently horses were major factor in their success.

You got the timelines wrong my friend. At the time when Aryans started to emigrate to India , South was still living in Stone age (Megalithic period) . The first civilizations in the subcontinent were established initially in the northern India and thereafter only the culture spread to South. The trade with Romans wasn't exclusively the right of Cheras or Pandyas and North Indians under Indo Greeks and Kushanas actively traded with them as well via Silk route.
