For the last 4-5 years India has been The team to beat in all 3 formats of the game.

They have an empty trophies cabinet during this time though.

But i had a discussion with friends and we agreed that this annoying trophies drought has actually helped the team remain relentless in its pursuit for greatness.

With 2023 world cup being in India there is every reason for this team remain focussed for another 4 years

Pakistan on the other hand, i think the CT win did more damage in the longer run than good.

Winning Nidahas trophy ensured DK played the WC, so looks like winning trophies does come with a downside :))

Weird way of looking at things. You don’t win trophies - you don’t leave a legacy. Ask South Africa.

West Indies have 3-4 trophies in last 15 years and yet Smith's South African team has better recall for most hardcore fans on this forum today.

Sarfraz won a trophy for Pakistan and he has been booted out in 2 years.

There is no legacy without a sustained peak

Pakistan have a legacy not because of 1993 but because of they were from.1985 till 2000 epicenter of raw talent in cricket

WI has a legacy in t20 cricket. SA doesn’t. No matter how many kitply or cycle agarbatti JAMT20s latter wins.

Similarly all these JAMODI victories after the 2011 word cup haven’t created a legacy for the Indian ODI outfit.

No body remembers who won more ODIs in the 80s. What is remembered is who won the world cups.

Trophies are overrated.

West Indies have won two WT20s in this decade and Pakistan won the Champions Trophy but they are still deeply mediocre teams who are not amongst the top sides.

Teams need to strive for consistency, i.e. a top 2-3 ranking in all formats. That is when you know you are a top team.

Winning a trophy is an icing on the cake. It doesn’t make or break a team.

Ganguly begs to differ.

There is no point of doing well in LOI without trophies. Tbh people don't remember series wins in LOI.

I agree. yes in tests absolutely. rankings matter. I think the test world championship is rubbish because it isn't fair to the number one team. They could lose a game in the semis and then all their efforts to dominate the league ladder goes in vain.

What they should do is perhaps have a KO stage where both teams play a best of 2 games in semis before the final. if the team that finished lower in the rankings during the league stage wins one and draws the other game in the semis then they should be allowed to progress. The team that finished higher in the group stage should only be required to draw both games to progress to the final.

The final can remain a grand final.

in odi however winning the title matters for sure and india haven't won anything of note despite being a top 2 side since 2011 in odi.

To be the greatest ever team you have dominate in tests and win an ICC title hence Aussies of 2000 and west indies of 80s are ahead.

Sustained peak confirms the process works. I would rather take an unbeaten test match streak to a T20 world cup

Next challenge - Winning the CT and digging the tricolour flag into the Gaddafi stadium soil in front of all non believers in Mahabharat.
