Haseeb Hameed AKA Baby Boycott - Performance Watch

He has struggled on early season pitches which tend to be seam friendly, particularly against balls moving away from his body and he is working on overcoming this technical flaw. It was bound to happen, after his fantastic first season and India series bowlers were bound to study him and expose his weakness.

Being dropped is a blessing in disguise, having him debut in England against Morkel and Rabada would be the equivalent of feeding him to the wolves, especially with him being a inexperienced young batsman. Hameed will remain on the selectors radar so he should forget everything and just work on overcoming his technical flaw through the winter and aim for a comeback next summer.

It's a ridiculous decision to drop Hameed after a promising start.Has he performed that bad?3 tests,6 innings,two 50s with an average of 43,playing all 3 tests on spinning tracks of subcontinent- it's a marvelous job done by a real 20 years old lad.He has done all the hard work and when there is time to play on home ground on familiar pitches,he is dropped.Stupid decision.It won't do any good for the confidence of this young man.

We're halfway through the county season in which he's been seriously struggling. Also failed against South Africa A the other day as well (0 and 2).

He's a young player he was bound to have a bad patch. He was playing list A cricket at the start of the season which has played a part in his poor form. He is playing at balls he would usually be leaving.

It's not just that, it's a weakness which has been exploited or else he'd not be averaging so low; he has not played as much on the early season pitches last season as well and you know what the weather can be like here ; there's always a bit for the seamers despite the lack of a toss and hi off stump awareness has been poor and acted like a chain effect even on the good pitches. I back him to come good though

He will come good. He's playing in a brilliant set up. I'll back him to make the ashes squad.
 
I like his technique very much. also has a sound head. I hope he scores tons of runs for england

Haseeb Hameed at 16 was a better player of the moving ball than Kohli is now. Needs to pick a different role-model. Someone like Dravid or Kallis to match his style.
 
110* for Lancashire 2nd xi today. Hopefully the start of him finding some form.

It's the t20 block and he doesn't get in the t20 team. If it's any consolation he is playing alongside Shiv Chanderpaul who's in the same situation.

England should get him back into the team asap. Much better prospect than Jennings
 
It would be harsh to throw Hameed in against such a quality attack when he's so much out of form. I don't think England will take the risk of harming his career that way.
 
He is a special talent.... the way he played on india tour just showed how talented he is.....
 
Haseeb Hameed is raring to go after a month out of the limelight working on his game.

Hameed has not been part of Lancashire’s ongoing NatWest T20 Blast campaign, with the silver lining of being able to play some second-team and league cricket.

It wasn’t an easy first half of the summer for the England opener, who will return to first-team action in Sunday’s Specsavers County Championship clash with Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl.

The 20-year-old posted two fifties in his first eight career one-day matches in April and May, but he has not yet topped 47 in 15 first-class innings for the Red Rose or England Lions.

Since his last Championship appearance against Warwickshire at Edgbaston in late June, however, he has scored a second-team century along with spending time in the middle for Liverpool Competition side Formby.

Things are definitely looking up for the Boltonian, who said: “It’s been quite a difficult season for me so far. But I’ve had these three to four weeks away from first-team cricket, and I’m quite keen to put the first half of the season to one side now.

“It’s a season of two halves. What’s happened has happened, and it’s important to look forward now. We’ve had a couple of second-team fixtures against Warwickshire and the MCC Young Cricketers, and I’ve also played for Formby.

“It’s been nice to spend some time in the middle and play against some decent bowlers. Any kind of match practice is beneficial. You hear a lot of people talk about ‘it can only take one ball for a batsman to feel back in nick’.

“Hopefully I can look forward to the next six games, not dwell too much on earlier in the season and take confidence from last year. After the first six games of last year was when I really started putting my stamp on things. I was able to do that well.”

It’s been quite a difficult season for me so far. But I’m quite keen to put the first half of the season to one side now. It’s important to look forward

Hameed knows more England Test honours will come as long as he does things right, which means concentrating on Lancashire for now. And he and his team-mates have a Championship title to aim for.

They head to Hampshire - the first of six remaining four-day games - second in Division One and 29 points behind leaders Essex with them still to play at Emirates Old Trafford early next month.

“Essex are in pole position, but a lot can happen in the next couple of months,” said Hameed. “We have been doing really well. The acquisitions we made over the winter have really helped.

“Macca (Ryan McLaren), Dane (Vilas) and Shiv (Chanderpaul) have added that extra bit of experience, which we probably lacked a bit last year. In most cases, someone has put their hand up and either got a score or a few poles.

"All in all, it’s been a really good first half of the season. It’s important to take each game as it comes and continue to apply the pressure on them (Essex).”

Lancashire have won two of their last three Championship fixtures, including beating Middlesex at Southport and then Hampshire at Old Trafford, a game which Hameed missed for Lions duty.

He added: “That Middlesex game was great for us. They’re reigning champions, and we were able to put in a convincing performance. That gave us a lot of confidence. To then back it up against Hampshire was massive. To get back-to-back wins in this division isn’t easy.

“I missed the Hampshire game, but when I went back and joined them for the Warwickshire game, the lads were in great spirits. If we can keep this momentum up, we’ll be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.”

Meanwhile, Lancashire face back-to-back NatWest Blast away games against Northamptonshire and Leicestershire on Thursday and Friday. They currently have nine points from nine games and sit just outside the North Group's top four.

England keeping 'close eye' on Haseeb Hameed, says Paul Farbrace

Keaton Jennings has been put on notice that Haseeb Hameed could soon be "breathing down his neck" for England's opening spot.

Jennings, whose Test career started with a debut century in Mumbai, has had a torrid summer at the top of the order and was dismissed in timid fashion as England posted 260-6 on the first day of the fourth Investec Test against South Africa.

He was lucky to survive an early caught-and-bowled chance at Emirates Old Trafford and eventually nicked off for 17, taking his tally to 109 runs in seven innings against the country of his birth.

Jennings only came into the England side when Hameed broke his finger in India and, though the 20-year-old has been short of runs himself this term, the latter is widely expected to become a fixture at the highest level.

He was an interested observer at Emirates Old Trafford, his home ground, and England's assistant coach Paul Farbrace did not sugar coat the reasons for Hameed's appearance in the dressing room.

"If you're in the England team there is always, and should always be, someone knocking on the door for your place, whether they're here at the ground breathing down your neck or doing it in the Championship," said Farbrace.

"This was just another opportunity to keep (Hameed) in the fold and make him realise he's very much part of the future of the England cricket team.

"We'll be keeping a close eye on his County Championship game (against Hampshire) on Sunday and we want him to make runs. Hopefully he'll be pushing contention to get back into the team at some point."

Although Farbrace offered a positive assessment of the Jennings' mental qualities, he was blunt in assessing what the Durham man needs to do to remain in the post.

"Score runs, that's the bottom line," he said. "Test cricket is a harsh world to come into. A lot gets said about players getting found out at international level - well, he's found out a lot about himself in these Test matches.

"There are areas of his game he'd like to work on. There just hasn't been time to take a step backwards and work on the things he would like to help him be more successful in Test cricket.

"But the one thing we would judge him on is his character, his personality to cope with the last few weeks, and I have to say he's a very honest young man who works extremely hard at his game.

"I think he will make a success of international cricket."

Haseeb on 58* off 197 balls for Lancs against Essex right now. Lancs struggling on 163/7, he's the top scorer. Next highest 23.
 
How has he played this county season? I'd say that if he's played well, he should replace Westley and be a Trott like batsman in the Ashes.

Pretty awfully, believe this is his 2nd 50 of the season now? Got to have a solid last few games to get in the ashes touring squad.
 
I have said it before and I will say it again- he is a real talent and England need to invest in him. He has grit, character, ability, and he is still very young. He is a far better prospect than all the others that have been tried and if England invest in him probably he will bear fruit for many years to come.

Yeah, unfortunate.

He's the best young batsman I've seen in years. Can't remember any young touring batsman play as well. [Other than Cook].

Really want him in the team.

Better to ease him into the team when lighter test series are due, also he has not had the best season recently. Ashes in AUS is no joke, its tough for bats with experience imagine a rookie. When the tour is done trust me there will multiple vaccancies waiting to be occupied and Haseebs time will come
 
Ashes hopeful Haseeb Hameed has suffered a fractured finger a week before England's squad to face Australia this winter is due to be announced.

Hameed sustained the injury to his right hand while batting in Lancashire's Specsavers County Championship defeat to Middlesex at Lord's, with his county later confirming the break on Twitter.

The opener retired hurt on 23 after the blow but did return to the middle to partner last man Matthew Parkinson, failing to add to his score as Steve Finn's 8-79 earned the hosts a 36-run win.

Hameed made his England debut on the tour of India last winter, hitting 82 in his second innings in Rajkot and then 59 not with a broken finger on his left hand in the third Test at Mohali batting at No 8.

However, the 20-year-old was overlooked in favour of Keaton Jennings as Alastair Cook's opening partner at the start of the summer after struggling for runs in the County Championship.

Mark Stoneman was then preferred to Jennings for the series against Windies after Jennings averaged 15.87 in the four Tests against South Africa.

Hameed's injury followed that of Middlesex's England seamer Toby Roland-Jones, who failed to bowl on the final two days at Lord's due to a back strain.

Arguably a good thing. Keep the lad away from the Aussie quicks, bring him back next year when he has played more.

Pretty disappointed with how things have turned out for Hameed. He's obviously a great talent but has gotten himself into a tangle at the worst possible time. Hopefully a strong comeback is on the cards for the next English summer.

Yeah, he is a hyped up player. But that does not mean he is not any good. he is quite good talent. But i doubt he will ever be a great player.
 
Hameed looked a great talent last year in India and showed lots of steel and character when he played with a broken finger to try and save a game for England. Not sure what happened to him, haven't been following whats going on.
 
With Cook appearing to fade, 2018 is an excellent opportunity for Baby Boyks.
 
If he can perform on the Lions tour and also score runs at the start of the county season, he should be in contention.
 
Had the best defence among all batsmen (pace and spinbi comned) of the NZ, Eng and Aus sides that faced India here. Really hope he becomes a certainty in the English team soon. Special player

Very impressed by his show in India. Looked like a proper Test batsman.
 
I think it will be long wait before we see him play international cricket again.
He might be considered for subcontinent tours only by selectors.
Right now gubbins,jennings,alex Davies are ahead of him in pecking order.
 
Is there any reason other than the very obvious reason why he is being followed and tracked passionately on PP ??

I know he is of Indian descent. Would not have asked the doubt if I thought he is of Pakistani descent.
 
Where is this kid now? IIRC, people were claiming he will be England's future captain. Should've been a permanent player in the side by now for that to hold true.
 
Has been recalled by his county but has failed in 4 consecutive first class innings. In an ideal world he should have been getting ready to take Cook’s place now but he’s nowhere near international standard at the moment.

Sad really, he seemed to have the temperament to become a test player but his game has totally deserted him. I've never seen anyone fall off so hard so quickly. Mohammad Sami maybe.

Just couldn't deal with all the expectations on his shoulders after his run of good form, I think the media and peers did not help either by calling him the next Cook like in that article. There is only one Sir Alastair Cook, if they fell of Trees like leaves then maybe England wouldn't have a decade long losing streak vs Pakistan !
 
Things go from bad to worse for Hameed.

Fair enough. He has become below average, his FC stats don't lie. If he wants to revive his career, he should work on his bowling as well, he should look to become an all-rounder.
 
Oh dear. The dream is over for Haseeb Hameed for now. It'll be a miraculous recovery from here if he gets back to the England team.

Needs to replace his batting coach (his dad) but that won't be an easy conversation.

Haseeb Hameed is up for grabs - What are we waiting for?

Hameed has been discarded by both England and his county and from what I have heard he is looking to play for a new country

Would be an upgrade from our current openers

I think PCB should take a punt at Hammy
 
At this rate, he might have a shot of breaking into the Nepal reserve team. He woke up one day and forgot how to bat. That is literally his story.

As an England international, he has access to the best coaches in the county circuit, and no one has been able to help him for 3 years now. As Lanchasire’s director said, his form is a complete mystery.

Not sure this is correct, Lancashire's biggest dispute with Hameed over the last couple of years has been the fact that he is still primarily being coached by his father and he's not taking advice from the county professionals. His father is clearly a bad influence on him.
 
Desi daddy issues having an adverse influence on a promising player.

He is only 22 he can talk to his dad and work with a proper coach.
 
I feel so sad about this. Perhaps some other CCC will give him a job.
 
Thought some of Paul Allotts comments were very harsh. LCCC should have been backing young Hameed all the way instead of releasing him like this - esp when you look at some of the third rate batsmen on the county cricket circuit these days.

I highly doubt he has entirely bypassed the coaching staff and system at Lancashire and beyond.

hes averaged 20 odd over 40 first class games, hes had a fair shot, im guessing he negotiated a fairly lucrative contract after his break out seasons, and lancs pbly couldn't justify the expense.

He probably just became bored with county cricket.

Now he is going to find it hard I feel, I hope another county picks him up. Even then he will have to treat each match as his last for a while.
