Have Bangladesh and Pakistan exchanged their position in international cricket?

Looking at the time phrase of last two years and current world cup, is it fair to say, Bangladesh team's position at International stage in terms of overall quality is the same as Pakistan team in 1990's while Pakistan team's position is of Bangladesh team of late 2000's?
 
Bangladesh has certainly performed better than Pakistan in the last two years however Bangladesh is nowhere close to where Pakistan were in their prime.
 
Not really people still take BD lightly...accept it or not
unless they make a place in an ICC Semi Final they will be regarded as minnows one win here and there won't make you a formidable opposition which is why experts like McCullum, Warne have not rated BD among the SF contenders although this time they might actually make it.Pakistan despite being in pathetic form is still a SF contenders in the eyes of most experts.
 
Come on, man. We are better than bengalis. They are having a bit too long fluke than they should be allowed. We are just unlucky. We lost game while we testing our bench against australia. Against south africa, we had fair games. Few sloppy performance against windies & afghanistan, in recent times. Although, i do think our series against south africa was pretty bad, as we haven't yet resolved our issues against short pitch bowling. Grant flower is the culprit.

Only people who take Bangladesh lightly nowdays are arrogant Pakistanis and Indians

Pakistan have declined a little which is obvious when you consider legendary players like Wasim, Imzamam, Afridi are not there anymore. Bangladesh have improved tremendously. I'd say Pakistan still holds the edge given they can run through batting orders on their days. But it's good for the cricket world that teams are so close to each other.
 
Pakistan are overall more talented and gifted bunch but they have a joker as captain who considers turning up in a Salwar kameez to meet the Queen as something to be proud of and his highlight of the tournament.

Bangladesh play a fearless brand of cricket. Look at how they handled short stuff today. So positive and so brave.

Mention one ICC Commentator that listed BD as SF contender.

Don't get me wrong I feel that BD has a really strong chance this time but if you go by most experts they will always place PK before BD due to theXFactor.

Thats why I said Bangladesh team of late 2000s, Bangladesh team at that time was decent overall and in the ascend, it was also the same team which knocked India out of WC in 2007. I am not saying current Pakistan team is absolute rubbish. Current Pakistan is also decent but we surely dont hold the same position in international stage that we once did.

I know pakistan have been horrible but would you back Bangladesh to do the same ??
 
This World Cup might define Bangladesh.

If they get some good results, they will be considered a serious team.

If they however lose most of their matches, people will still consider Pakistan a better team.

You know Bangladesh team of late 2000s had also knocked Indian team out WC in 2007.
 
I haven't seen their bowlers yet, but BD's batsmen look technically superior without a doubt. Only Babar could be described at this level or better.

Bangladesh are a better team in that they will beat Pakistan 8/10 times on any sort of pitch

They are still developing and still don’t have tourney winning killer instinct but as a team they are much better than Pakistan atleast in Odis

I think Bangladesh vs Pakistan might be closer than most people think.

Pakistan has dipped and Bangladesh has improved.

Bangladesh at the moment is better no doubt about it. They are confident side because they performed much better than Pakistan recently.

This is also a different pitch. It’s very dry and slow. Pakistan would have hit 350+ on this track with one of their top 3 hitting close to 150 alone.

Yes one thing sticks out for me is how they have handed short pitch bowling. Pakistan are a disgrace against short stuff.
 
Pakistan Vs BD match will tell the story. BD batting is pretty good, let's see how they cope up with amir and co.
 
Irrelevant but Mushfiqur reminds me a lot of Muhammad Rizwan. Short height, sweep shots and both are wixket keepers.

I am still not sure as to whether BD will beat Pakistan, at this moment in time I would say probably. Will have a better idea after I see their bowling attack. Pakistan bowling can be erratic but it can also be dangerous on a given day. But the BD batting looks better, not going to lie. Maybe this pitch is easier but after a few games results will tell their own story.
 
Bangladesh form wise are currently better than pak, but I hope this thread is not based on half an innings played on a dead track.

I think talent wise Pakistan is up there. Bangladesh lime up is very much tried and tested with each player very much settled in his role.

Pakistan haven’t been successful in getting. The best out of their experienced resources Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez on the other hand which is a big difference. Too much reliance on youth. If India went into the cup purely on basis of raw talent Pant, Gill, Shaw would be in but we don’t know if they would be consistent or not.

Pakistan always go out there with too many doubts and question marks. It’s best when they play a fearless brand of cricket.
 
A few years ago going into a World Cup match very few people would give Bangladesh a chance.

2019, Bangladesh go into the match probably as marginal favourites.

Well put. BD is definitely a pretty decent team now while Pakistan is underperforming big time as no player is being utilized optimally. I am pretty sure with a decent captain and team management Pakistan can do much better then they are doing now.

I think people are scared to admit it because of their pride but what Saj is saying is a fact. We are the minnows and Bangladesh are a side that can put up a fight and one that won’t go down easy.
 
They play good brand of cricket in patches. Need to more consistent to be considered one of the contender.

Yeah well it was nice to see them fluke their way to a an 8 wicket and 180 run thrashing in the semis and final respectively.
Would be nice to revisit this thread at the end of the league stage.

Actually no, we got demolished twice by India at our 'home' in the last ICC tournament we played:- Asia Cup. Yes we lost Bangladesh in that too. Infact its been 5 years now since we last beat Bangladesh in ODI.

2 years of poor performance by one and team and 2 years of good performance by other team doesn’t necessarily mean that one team has overtaken other.

Yes BD has been playing better cricket than Pak in recent times but we were no 5 in ODIs a month ago and above Aus but we weren’t necessarily better than them. BD on the other hand lost multiple internationals to Afghanistan but they weren’t necessarily a worse team than Afg.

You need to perform in ICC tournaments, overseas series to be considered a force to reckon with. At the moment I dont know what BD has achieved which made OP suggest it has overtaken Pak. Again BD is playing better cricket than Pak at the moment but there isnt much achievement to suggest they have overtaken Pak.

Bangladesh will be favourites against us in the match.
 
Pakistan is still a better team if you consider test, t20 and ODI. Also, Pakistan will beat Bangladesh in more conditions than Bangladesh will. Bangladeshis are good on spinning pitches.

Pakistan has been above Bangladesh in the ODI Rankings in the past two years. Even after a 11-game losing streak, we are five points clear. So I'm not sure where this 'performed better than Pakistan' is coming from.

I would back BD to beat Pakistan. We won all of our matches since the last world cup too. We even beat you in UAE without our 2 best players

We scored 330 as opposed to 105 .

Should be a good match but honestly we should start as favourites
 
For Pakistanis who keep bringing up ODI rankings. Pakistan got bowled out for 105 by 8th ranked team. Bangladesh scored 330 against 3rd ranked team.

Mate the last few times Pakistan has faced Bangladesh, Bangladesh has won convincingly.

Pakistan Cricket is finished.
 
Bangladesh team has really improved and if you closely observe their matches, they fight till the end.

Ofcourse they have a long way to go in Test cricket, but this is a start. They will soon be taking up Pakistan's place in all three formats.
 
Both Bangladesh and Afghanistan will overtake Pakistan in 10-15 years

Bangladesh might be a couple of pace bowlers away from being a complete side. One thing I admire is that they are making the best of their resources, batted very intelligently and bowling tightly without looking like they have a bowler who can blow away the opposition.

We can only hope that somewhere in between those years we can improve our system and stop the downtrend.
 
Bangladesh's batting is very good better than pakistan but their bowling is awful and the trundlers galore in their team.They can't be a good team until they found good pacers.

After their win today against SA, I believe they will switch position with us on the ICC ranking table or tomorrow when we will lose again to England.

Deservedly so, they have batted very skilfully, and bowled with great discipline. They lack a bit of X factor in pace bowling and lower order hitting, but at least they know how to use their talents to the best of their ability.

Currently BD team is certainly better than Pakistan team but calling them like Pakistan's team of 1990 is nothing but very poor knowledge of cricket history.
 
I'm surprised to see the arrogance of some fans. This mindset was responsible for the division of Pakistan. Why can't Bangladesh be a better team than Pakistan? Just because Pakistan has produced greats in the past that doesn't mean the time will never change. At present Bangladesh has better players and match winners compared to Pakistan. So open your eyes and accept the reality and atleast try to stay humble. Despite being a die hard Pak fan I still would bet my money on Bangladesh to win against this weak Pak team.

Totally different things there is nothing wrong in him wearing Shalwar Kamiz his cricketing skills got nothing to do with what he wears. He is a poor captain and on merit didn't even deserve to be in the team, but your reasoning is entirely irrelevant.
 
I don’t think this Bangladesh team is anywhere near as good as Pakistan of the 90s. That team was one of our all time great teams and not many teams today would be able to challenge that one.

Over the last few years though Bangladesh have comfortably been better than us. All you have to do is look at our ODI record against them since 2015 as we’ve lost all 4 matches against them.

The amount of people still looking down at Bangladesh and thinking it will be an easy match against them is ridiculous. Have we forgotten what happened when we last met them in the Asia Cup?
