What's new

Have you ever smoked?

Yes,I smoked a cigarette for the first and the last time 2 years ago.
I have smoked sheesha a couple of times with friends.

Mo, never. I hate the smell and bad breath it gives.

Smoked 10 a day, for 8 years.

Started when I was a foolish 15 year-old trying to impress girls: subsequently I achieved a net amount of zero girls, and a net amount of one serious addiction.

I still remember running for a bus when I was a trim youth and feeling like my lungs were about to explode. A supremely nauseating and utterly frightening experience.

Gave up cold turkey several years ago - one of the best decisions that I have made.

The odd cigar on special occasions.

All my uncles and aunts on both sides who smoked died of lung cancer or emphysema in their sixties. The ones who didn't smoke all made in past eighty. It's a no-brainier for me.

Do you keep working on yourself? From smoking to meat, any other habbit you will be changing?

I also started at 15,all the guys were doing it,I wanted to climb up the social ladder.Thought I would look cool.
I used to smoke 12 or 13 a day.I've reduced the amount to 8-10.I want to leave it altogether but I can't.

Myself and my wife are currently trying for our first child, so we are in the process of giving up alcohol.

In my case it never really went up from 2-3 a day. With alcohol though the number could reach around 5-6 but I drink once a fortnight now and that too mostly beer so that's controlled for now.

I'm a smoker and have smoked for many years now, however I only smoke a 5/6 a day and in Ramadan it's only a couple. I've never tried to quit but really should try. The price of cigarettes in the UK is crazy now, around £10 for a pack(20) for a decent brand.

Congratulations for getting married, didn't know. I hope you and your wife are blessed with many children.

Are you trying to quit for health reasons only?

My elder brother once rolled a piece of paper like a cigarette and tried to inhale smoke after lighting the other end. He also gave it to me, his partner of crime in every matters. Thought it was cool back then because our dad used to smoke. But our mother found out about us and the rest was history....:22:

I was 7yrs old and my brother 10yrs back then. That's my only experience of smoking.

Thanks. Just had our 2-year wedding anniversary. So decided it was time to have a child.

Trying to give up alcohol for health reasons primarily, also want to set the right example to our child, and stay 'spiritually' sober as much as anything.

I did a shararatt at the age of 6-7.

That resulted in Me never Smoking a Cigerette or Sheesha or any addictive drug in Life.

Mehaz Allah ka fazal hai. Alhamdulillah.

I smoke a few every 3-4 months or so. However, I haven't had one since January. My father used to be a chain smoker and I have a few friends who smoke, so I have had my fair share of second-hand smoke. I had my first at the age of 16 out of sheer curiosity, but over the years it has proved to be a genuine relaxant.

Whenever I am stressed out or have something important to tend to, a cigarette or two helps. Nonetheless, I'm planning to switch to cigar (occasionally as well) because it is relatively less harmful and more economical as well, since a cigar can last for quite a bit especially if you are a very occasional smoker like me.

Very few people are lucky enough like you wrt not developing permanent addiction.

Maasoom pyaaray wajood kisi kisum ki smoking kertay ache nai lagtay. Baaqi aapki marzi hai bhaee.

I started when I was 15. An uncle who was visiting us gave me his car keys to go fetch his pack. I went to the car, and discovered over a dozen packs of Dunhills, because he was a chain smoker and bought them in bulk. I pocketed one for myself, hoping he wouldn't notice, and he didn't.

That night, while the rest of the house slept, I lit one for the first time in my room, using a salad plate for an ashtray. I do not recall being repulsed by that first drag. What did happen was that I felt mildly nauseous, and fell asleep in the chair.

Throughout the rest of my school years, I limited myself to one a night, and my parents never suspected. My mother did find out once I was in University, but the really surprising thing was that my wife never did, because by the time I got married, I was smoking half a pack a day. Once I quit, I realized just how nasty the smell is.

I switched to e-cigs once I hit 30, and the technology was mature enough to make them a suitable replacement to "analogs." The jury is still out on them, but I feel much healthier: no more chest and left arm pain. Also there are so many more flavors to explore, although I limit myself to the tobacco flavors for the most part. In many ways though, the e-cigs are far more of a handicap than the cigarettes. There's no need to step out for a break, so the device is always by my side. It is the last thing I touch before I go to sleep, and the first thing I pick up when I wake. Fasting is sheer torture, because the e-cig is so ubiquitous, the lack of it makes you go crazy.

For me, smoking is life tea and coffee. I am not an avid drinker, but if I am stressed out, it helps me calm my nerves. Tea + cigarette is the ultimate stress-reliever for me, and something I highly enjoy once in a while.

In Triceps? OMG is that because of cigarettes? And here I was avoiding it thinking it was psychological.

I've only smoked one or two whole cigs in my life. That's about it. Other than that I some times have a puff here or there when my buddies are smoking.

I've only done sheesha once in my life and think it is worse for you than cigarettes.

I don't recall if it was isolated to the triceps, but they do say left arm pain is one of the telltale signs of an impending heart attack. Mamoon, can you confirm if this is so?

Only socially when out with friends. Got addicted for maybe a span of 3 months when going through a stressful time of my life .Was able to quit soon after.

The first time I ever smoked anything was at the age of 14.A schoolmate brought a mini-sheesha to school. He offered me a drag.I refused but inside I wanted a taste. So after inquiring from a few kids I found out a place that sold mini-sheeshas.I bought one and went home, directly went to the bathroom and finished the thing off.It had a limit of 500 puffs and I finished it in half an hour.I bought a couple more but they were expensive so i stopped buying them.

Fast forward two years later.A guy from my tuition centre gave me a cigar(blunt).I wanted to try it desperately. So after class got off I went to the dhaba in front of the centre, hid behind it and got a matchbox. The taste had me disgusted but it was strangely satisfying so i had another drag and after that another..i finished off about half the cigar but threw it away lest i be caught.

A week after that a bought a cigarette, and then the week after,a box of Marlboro.I smoked about 5 a day after tuitions.I smoked about 90-100 boxes over 2 years.

Now I've reduced it to one a day.

I'm more concerned about breaking the fast than breaking any utensils.

And I won't be watching on June 4. My nerves are shot as is. The last thing I need is the stress of the match. I'll watch the highlights if we win.

Although left arm pain prior to heart attack is not as common as people think, but yes it is one of those early signs (or at times, late). I'd suggest you keep a few tablets of Aspirin in your wallet. If the dreaded time comes and you start to sweat and your chest tightens, calmly chew on a couple of tablets (don't swallow).

Heart attack is not as big a deal as it was before. Medical science has made considerable breakthroughs when it comes to the Organ of Love. My father had a heart attack in March and I made it certain that he carried Aspirin in his wallet wherever he went. He is 60+, a chain smoker and we have a family history of heart problems.

It was only a matter of time, and so when the time came, the Aspirin worked like a charm as it always does, and he drove himself to the hospital. Now, after getting a stent and controlling his diet (although he still smokes secretly), he feels fitter than he has in years.

E-cigs are looked down upon in Pakistan. They are considered as one of the earliest signs of being a chichora, just like how buttoning the top button of your polo shirt is an early sign of being a pappu.

That's okay, I am a chichora. And a pappu baccha for that matter. Have been for decades.

Thanks. I don't have the pain anymore, ever since I switched to the e-cigs, lost close to a 100 pounds, started working out and religiously watching what I eat.

I did begin an aspirin regimen a few years ago, after my father had a heart attack at 55, but I gave it up after a while.

I used to be an addict three years ago

Now once in a while I smoke in a party with friends

I have friends who literally smoke everything that can be rolled up and smoked, my father was a chainsmoker, but I've never had the argue to smoke, never ever. It's like I'm gay and the cigarette is a hot girl, never has my mind even wondered what would smoking be like. I had a lot of cigarette dabbis around me all the time but thankfully I've never smoked. I think if you have secondhand smoke experiences in your youth then you automatically develop a hatred for smoking altogether.

A question to those who are occasional smokers, what cigarettes do you smoke and how long have you been a casual smoker? I've had 4 friends who were casual smokers at first but slowly gave in over the years.

I used to smoke Benson Double-O but now I've switched to Dunhill.

In islamabad you always have that one uncle, usually in a black Prado, dangling his hand out the window holding an e cigarette thinking he looks like the coolest person ever.

There used to be this cigarette in Pakistan called k-2. It was the worst smelling cigarette in existence, even inhaling the smoke gave you headaches. Thank God it's no longer avaliable anymore. I hated people who smoked that.

Quite true.

They discontinued K2?!?! What is the world coming to?

The filterless K2 has a long and storied history. It was a local brand, and the choice of the proletariat, the mazdurs and the kisaans. In the Bhutto era, a number of leftist intellectuals starting smoking K2, bad taste and all, to express solidarity with the workers and peasants and to support local industry.

Later on, the peasants in Punjab switched to Embassy Kings. To translate from the Urdu, Embassy Kings is one "hard" cigarette. I'm not sure what the proletariat smokes in the other provinces, but in Punjab, Embassy King is King, pardon the pun.

I'm not a smoker but I smoke a few cigarettes for a few days after every 3-4 months or so. Like a few other people mentioned, it's a great stress reliever, or at least that's what I've lead my brain to think because of hearing it all the time. So yes, I smoke every once in a while, very rarely, but yes. I think it's the placebo effect.

I don't think I can get addicted to anything though. I have never smoked in my life for the fun of it or to look cool, in fact, nobody knows I smoke. Not even my friends who smoke. I like to think I have enough control over myself to know what's good for my body and what isn't.

Recently however I have developed a liking for tea and it helps greatly with headaches.

You mean the ones that look like tobacco cigarettes? The ones I was talking about don't. No one in the West uses those anymore, they are so... 2008.

And why would anyone dangle it outside the window? I could understand if it were an actual cigarette.

No its nothing like a normal cigarette.

If you don't dangle it around then how would everyone know that you're not a normie who smoke regular cigarettes?

Never say you can't addicted to anything. Everyone who's an addict today once said that he won't get addicted. It's been the case with me, everyone I know to be an addict today at some point in life said that he would not become an addict. I'm not saying that you'll be an addict too one day but you should never underestimate the power of tobacco.

A thing I've noticed with casual smokers is that as soon as their life turns extremely stressful they turn into addicts. As a matter of fact this is exactly how my dad got addicted to smoking.

But people dangle the regular cigarettes out the car windows, so as to let the smoke waft away from the inside of the car. I would think they would keep the e-cig in the car to set themselves apart from the "normies."

True. I can't disagree there.

Only a few after a night out.

No and never will, in shaa Allah. Cigarettes are right up there with some of the most disgusting smells in the world. :sanga

I agree, the only time I tried a cigarette,I started coughing and gagging because of the taste and the smell...it's horrible I don't know how people can stand it.

It's just a case of jumping on the "cool" bandwagon for many. Before they know it, they're addicted and cannot find a way out of it, despite how utterly disgusting its very essence is.

I started smoking at 16 to fit in with the crowd.

Thankfully i gave it up around 3 months ago and have not had any cravings, it was easier to quit smoking then to quit sugar to be honest.

Never smoked and never will do Inshallah. My Dad does and the smell, well I don't think I've smelled anything worse in my life. I let him know exactly how I feel about him smoking, especially in and around the house. Smoking makes you live a shorter life and there is no reason anyone should be smoking imo. Never thought it was cool and people around my age (I'm 16) who smoke I try avoid at all costs, I pity them tbh.

Wait....What :O :O :O......

You're 16 bro ??

Started at 18 and have been a heavy smoker since. Gold Flake Kings for me.

I smoked once, coughed like crazy after that and never touched a cigarette again

I am allergic to it. Even three minutes of passive smoking is enough to cause three days of sore throat. Though I tried it once on the insistence of a senior colleague. He instantly realized that I am smoking for the first time.

Nope never and never will!! Worst smell I can't stand close to the person who is smoking. Hate this thing more than anything.

I smoke around 8-10 a day and if I go out partying it can go upto 15-20 a day.. However there are some days I don't smoke at all but these days are few and far in between.. Been trying to quit for years but never tried seriously and never got my will power up to kick the butt..

Smoked pot in my teenage years and cigs a few times but I never got addicted. Now I occasionally do hookah with friends.

Same here, did smoke pot when I was younger but when it got to where it was a daily thing I knew I had to ditch it. I never saw the attraction of cigarettes themselves. I mean put some dope in there and at least you get a hit.

Hate smoking. Had too many experiences of second hand smoke from friends and colleagues in tight/closed office spaces. Won't ever get in to it.

On the downside, not having any smoking experience made it difficult to get anything from the 1st joint I smoked. The friends kept saying, "Yo man, take the smoke in and keep it there , blah blah, just like a cig ".. I huffed and puffed like Thomas the tank Engine, yet got NOTHING. Had to fake being high among friends, just to avoid further embarrassment. :D

Sadly I've been smoking since a very young age......

I smoke like 4 spliffs a day, never had a ciggie for the same reason as Cpt. Rishwat

Some excellent posts. Unfortunatelu at present there isn't a like button so when there is a strong urge i quote the person.

I feel very happy when I read your posts where you mention how you are different from your company. Actually I see a resembling image of my time few years earlier around the same area and same class of people.

What does the urdu say brother and why would anyone want to vent their anger on you :)) you're one of the nicest people on this forum, also I don't really smoke 4 spliffs a day I would die :yk only every now and then like once every 2-3 months. People should avoid substance abuse it can lead to a dark path, I know PPers have issues and stuff they feel like they need to smoke based on that but they should seek help from friends, family and mental health advisors

One line is for Ahmad only.

The other line says " Why do you burn your wings in her grief "

The last line says " I am few months elder than both of you so just take it as an advice for big brother "

I do mention it because there are many people who mind given Muft k mashwaray " free advices " and they don't like anybody adressing their personal choices and decisions so it is better to say such stuff in advance rather than approaching TUU TUU mein mein and disharmony.
