Heinrich Klaasen announced retirement from international cricket [Updated Post@ 119]

Needs to improve against pace and swing but amazing overall absolutely brutal

It was brilliant knock in final against best spinners. Sadly came in loss, but can't fault his efforts.
When he activated the god mode i thought this was done. Some of the ball striking were out of the world. Almost like "where do you bowl to this guy" feeling for spinners.

In the last 12 months. :( What an unlucky he is

Klaasen becomes most expensive retained player in tournament history

Heinrich Klaasen has set a new benchmark as the most expensive player ever retained by an IPL team ahead of an auction.

On Thursday, Sunrisers Hyderabad confirmed retaining Klaasen for a record-breaking Rs 23 crore, surpassing the previous Rs 17 crore that Royal Challengers Bengaluru paid to retain Virat Kohli back in 2017.

Klaasen played a pivotal role in SRH’s journey to the finals in the 2024 season, amassing 479 runs across 16 matches at an impressive strike rate of 171.07.

The 33-year-old South African has been in remarkable form in T20 leagues globally, solidifying his status as a highly sought-after talent in franchise cricket.

Kohli was handed a 21-crore retention, three crore more than the designated slab, by RCB ahead of the upcoming IPL season. Lucknow Super Giants’ Nicholas Pooran too was given a retention fee of Rs 21 crore.

He is the second name of the word “destruction”. Simply sensational striker of the bowl.

Not right to blame Klaasen. He did his job.

If rest of the batters couldn't get 26 runs from 23 balls, not Klaasen's fault.

If rest of the batters couldn't get 25 runs from 30 balls, what could he do?
Sadly that's the trend here , one player is responsible for all the sh1t , like Rizwan in Pakistan team

I need help after you dared to bring Rizwan into this?
Yes you need help, because other poster mentioned Klaasen is not the only responsible for SA's WC final defeat, similarly Rizwan wasn't the sole responsible for Pakistan loss to USA.

Rizwan is responsible for everything wrong with Pakistan.

Ok if that makes you happy.

Irrelevant here, but sources claiming that Kirsten resigned due to selection of Babar for Aus tour.

So please spare Rizwan in thus.

Heinrich Klaasen will lead South Africa in the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan

Regular skipper Aiden Markram is currently engaged in the Test series against Sri Lanka and has been rested due to the tight schedule between the third Test and the T20Is.

Another setback for South Africa as Heinrich Klaasen gets injured after the ball hits his thumb—he has now left the field.

He is such a crybaby. Love watching him cry. Pakistan has made him cry so much since ast few months.

Arguably the most dangerous batter in ODI cricket today. Incredibly skilled, powerful and versatile.

Heinrich Klaasen excluded from Cricket South Africa's men's central contracts list

Star wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen has been excluded from Cricket South Africa's (CSA) central contract list for the 2025–26 season. This comes after Klaasen’s focus on T20 leagues worldwide, pointing at a potential change in his career priorities, although CSA confirmed that discussions regarding his future are ongoing and a final decision will be made in due course.

Klaasen, who retired from Test cricket in January 2024, was on a white-ball only deal during the previous contract cycle. With T20 leagues giving both financial and personal flexibility, it is believed that the 32-year-old is leaning towards a league-centric schedule. Meanwhile, other senior players like David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen have chosen a hybrid contract. These deals allow players to be available for specific bilateral series and ICC tournaments.

Another one calls it a day, Heinrich Klaasen retires from international cricket

Players are retiring from international cricket just to focus on shorter formats and franchise leagues. With new leagues popping up every month all over the world, players know they can earn good money and enjoy a vibrant atmosphere. That’s why many are choosing franchise

That 2024 ICC WT20 - He did a Lance Klusner on us. The way he destroyed us in the final, it was epic, pure carnage, but got out and it turned the match in our favour. It was a huge moment for him and he would have been a legend if he had finished the match that day. I feel sorry for him.

He will be remembered as one of the most dangerous ODI batters ever in the middle order. A demon incarnate. Farewell brother.

Hope we keep seeing him in the IPL.

Hope he comes to Punjab !!

Now Rizwan is the best international keeper+batsman in International cricket :ROFLMAO:

This is definitely a bit of a shock. Disappointed for South African fans. For my money, he was the most destructive white-ball batsman in the world. But some players just have different priorities I guess. Real shame too with the 2026 T20 WC and the 2027 WC on the horizon, the latter of which is taking place in South Africa.

I guess it was on the cards when they excluded him from the central contracts list. But still shocked. He was easily the most destructive white-ball batsman in the world. Couldn't have come at a worse time for South Africa either with two World Cups on the horizon.

He was a great white-ball player for South Africa. I will never forget the manner in which in annihilated England in sweltering conditions in Mumbai at the World Cup. But unfortunately his legacy now will always be the 2024 WT20 final and how he failed to get South Africa over the line, despite being in a very good position to do so.

Yes , he could have easily Play next year World T20 . He is just 33 year old.

It is not a huge surprise as he didn't receive a central contract last month, and it now seems that was probably the case that he turned it down.
The reason he likely turned it down was because of Shukri Conrad . I think Rob Walter was OK with players playing T20 leagues etc as long as he had his best players available for ICC tournaments.

This worked out for everyone because CSA could play their black and coloured players in bilateral so that they can make up yearly average quotas etc.

Shukri Conrad now wants contracted players to be available for all bilateral series, further complicating the picture.

It's a mess down there and Klassen probably wants to avoid it all

That's a real shame. Another career ending prematurely due to administrative incompetence. Not sure if Rob Walter's exit is connected to this or he is just eyeing the NZ job.

No idea what Conrad is thinking asking top players to play bilaterals. This is something that nearly every country in the world has come around to. South Africa need to rethink this policy, otherwise this will become their new Kolpak problem.

Key player of africa retiring. But i guess Sa is never short of talent but he was beast against spin, i doubt sa can find a player who plays spin like him

not really a shock. it was on the cards. he was left out of SA central contracts and looks like he has already conveyed his intentions to SA after he was left out..

Sad for cricket, he was truly an entertainer. can you imagine, 2/3 top ODI SR players retired today, ODI cricket will be that much more boring now:

Maharaj reacts to Klaasen's bombshell retirement decision

Keshav Maharaj, a long-time teammate of Heinrich Klaasen, lauded the wicketkeeper-batter’s influence on the modern game.

Heinrich Klaasen stunned the cricketing world on Monday, 2 June, by announcing his decision to step away from international cricket.

Widely regarded as one of the most destructive batters of the modern era, Klaasen's international career spanned just seven years, having debuted in 2018.

With Heinrich Klaasen announcing his international retirement, teammate Keshav Maharaj salute's the wicket-keeper/batter's work.

Despite the brevity of his stint, the 33-year-old played a pivotal role in South Africa’s white-ball resurgence, helping them reach the semi-finals of the 2023 Cricket World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy, as well as the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Maharaj, who has watched the wicket-keeper batter from close quarters through the years, reflected on what he believes was the turning point in Klaasen’s career.

“From a teammate point of view and a cricketing point of view, we know the skill he possesses,” Maharaj said, speaking with ICC while in preparation for the World Test Championship Final.

“It's amazing to see how his journey's transitioned, where you're sort of in and out, probably not knowing where he stands, and then it just took one series that really changed the game.

"It was actually against Australia, I remember that ODI series, I think he got two 100s and a 50 [one hundred and two fifties] in that three-match series. And he's never looked back.”

The innings Maharaj referred to came during the home ODI series against Australia in February-March 2020.

At the time, Klaasen’s ODI career appeared to be on shaky ground, with just 251 runs in 14 matches at an average of a little over 22, with only one score above fifty.

That series marked a dramatic turnaround for Klaasen in international cricket, starting with a brilliant unbeaten 123 in the opening match, his maiden ODI century. He followed it up with scores of 51 and 68* as South Africa swept the series 3-0.

He finished with 242 runs and was deservedly named Player of the Series.

Maharaj paid tribute to the retiring batter, recognising both his influence on South African cricket and the significant void he leaves behind.

“He's probably one of, if not the most feared batsman, especially in the white-ball game these days,” Maharaj added.

“Yeah, it's sad to know that he's walking away. He's still young.

“He's younger than me. But, you know, we can only wish him well. I'm sure he has his reasons as to why, and you've got to respect that.”

“Obviously, a huge boot to fill within the lineup. But I know he'll still be here supporting us and making sure that we get over the line in this game as well.”

One of the most memorable matches Maharaj and Klaasen shared in recent times was the thrilling ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Final against India.

Chasing 177 for victory, South Africa were 70/3 in the ninth over when Klaasen walked in and immediately seized the momentum.

With a stunning counterattack, he smashed a 27-ball 52, swinging the match in South Africa’s favour and reducing the equation to just 26 needed from 24 balls.

But the game turned dramatically when Klaasen fell to the very first ball of a new over from Hardik Pandya, a pivotal moment from which South Africa never quite recovered and ended up seven runs short.

Looking back at the game, Maharaj said: “If you look at it, it probably goes down as one of the most special finals. We didn't get over the line, but if it wasn't for that knock, we would have probably lost by a lot more than we did.

“So he brought us back in the game and gave us a little bit of hope. And [we] probably didn't cross the final hurdle, but it was super special to witness the calibre and the skill factor of the player come out in a game of that magnitude. It just shows why he's world-class.”

ICC

In a recent interview with a foreign media outlet, the South Africa batter revealed that he retired from cricket because he lost interest in playing:

"I felt for a long time that I didn’t really care about any of my performances and whether the team won or not. That’s the wrong place to be,"

"I had a long conversation with Rob before the Champions Trophy, and I told him I didn’t feel good in my heart about what was going on. I wasn’t enjoying it that much. We talked nicely, we planned everything nicely up to and including the World Cup in 2027. So when he finished as coach and the [contract] negotiations [with CSA] didn’t go as planned, it made my decision a lot easier."

"Now I can spend six, seven months at home. My family needs it, it’s been a long four years with a lot of travel. I need a little rest."

Cannot blame him.

Top quality world class T20 cricketers from SA, NZ, WI can earn 1-2.5 million USD annually for IPL alone and can top up near another half million in other leagues

In such case they would want to maximise their earnings in 30-35 age while they are still able to bill at top dollar.

Klaasen wants to play 4 leagues where his contracts are as below

IPL - 2.7 mill USD contract fees + 0.125 mill match fees for 14 games

SA T20 - 0.25 mill USD

The Hundred - salary unrevealed but somewhere between 0.15 to 0.25 mill USD

MLC T20 - likely making another 0.15 mill USD

Total = approx 3.3.-3.5 mill USD

In meantime his CSA contract for white ball only would cutoff his access to atleast 2 leagues due to bilateral commitments and only net him around 0.20 million at best all included.

Now without encumbrance of CSA contract he can take up some other leagues like T10 and all also to top up his earnings.

Soon bilaterals and Tests will only become viable for big 3 teams.

Leagues are destroying international cric...too many leagues there atm. We might see more retirements soon.
