The news from Down Under is startling.

Australia is leaning towards adding a pace bowling all-rounder for the MCG Test to reduce the workloads of Starc and Hazlewood.

And the rumours are that it will be a Western Australian, but not Mitch Marsh (who bats at Number 4 for WA) but rather Hilton Cartwright, who bats below him at Number 5!

A player coming up to his 25th birthday who has 2 First Class centuries from 16 matches (albeit at an average of 44) and 15 wickets in 16 First Class matches, at a bowling average of 41.93.

This season Cartwright has 4 wickets from 5 matches at an average of 74.75 and a batting average of 36.67.

He would bat at Number 6 in place of Nic Maddinson. That means one fewer left-hander for Pakistan to bowl to, but also more overs to be bowled by a vastly inferior bowler.

Maddison had to go, can't bat, can't bowl & can't field. But he does have a nice personality apparently.

Hilton Cartwright added to Australia squad for the second Commonwealth Bank Test against Pakistan in Melbourne

Cricket Australia’s National Selection Panel (NSP) today announced that Hilton Cartwright has been drafted into the squad for the second Commonwealth Bank Test against Pakistan, starting at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Boxing Day (26 December).

The 24 year-old Western Australia all-rounder has been called up in the wake of Australia’s 39-run win in the first Test at The Gabba to provide all-round options, including the ability to bowl seam-up and bat in the top six, if required.

Explaining the decision, Interim National Selector Trevor Hohns said: “The bowlers got through a high workload in Brisbane and although everyone has pulled up okay, on reflection we wanted to give ourselves the option of including an all-rounder in Melbourne to ease that workload somewhat.

“To do that we wanted a batting all-rounder, someone to bowl seam-up and capable of batting in the top six as well, and after considering several names we came to the conclusion that Hilton fits that bill.

“We have seen plenty of him, he has performed well this season and we believe that if called upon he will do an excellent job.”

The squad is due to assemble in Melbourne on Thursday 22 December and a practice schedule and details of media opportunities will be announced in due course.

The NSP is made up of Trevor Hohns (Interim Chairman), Greg Chappell, Darren Lehmann and Mark Waugh.

Not a bad selection in terms of winning the test match.

I rate Mitch as a much better prospect but he is really down on confidence and form while Cartwright is in career best form with the bat. Good fielder as well.

In terms of bowling. Well it would be a Pakistan special if he gets a few wickets.

Is he any good?

I don't know him at all, but his batting numbers are fairly modest - even less First Class centuries than Mitch Marsh - while his bowling numbers are almost non-existent.

I know that Colin de Grandhomme recently caught Pakistan cold, but they have been Down Under for six weeks now, and I can't imagine it happening again.

Less first class centuries than Mitch Marsh is pretty irrelevant when one has been playing for 6 or 7 years and this is Cartwrights first 'full' season.

There is a real danger of Pakistan underestimating this guy and making a meal of it

Just hope there are enough utube videos available for Pakistan to chck this guys bowling etc

I doubt there are any youtube videos of his bowling.

But seriously. I would be comfortable facing him (well maybe a few years ago).

He's there to hold an end down for a short spell to allow Hazlewood and Starc some time to recover.

Best thing to actually do would be to smash him out the attack so he can't do that.

Hilton Cartwright to make his debut against Pakistan at MCG

Another all rounder from Australia making his debut against Pakistan. I know Pakistan has a history of making debutants look like legends. Grandhomme only had success against Pakistan in his first inning. Do pakistan need to be wary of Hilton Cartwright? I hope Pakistan has a solid plan against him , and not give him a 5 fer.

Trust us to make him an overnight hit and probably a bigger Mythical superstar than Marcus North

Mr Cartwright..... Get ready to become a Legend mate !! Probably the best opposition to debut against :(

Watch how Pakistan make a superstar out of that kid
