Funny thing about One Battle After Another - a film like this would never be made in Hollywood today, if it were not for who directed it (Paul Thomas Anderson) and who the main star is (Leo DiCaprio).

It cost $150 million to make, and with added costs like marketing, the budget probably went over $300 million. A film that costs that much, is an original idea and isn't part of a franchise rarely ever gets a budget like this. And it's highly likely that it won't even make back it's budget (let alone turn a profit). But that's okay because not every film has to be a box-office smash. Fight Club was a commercial bomb and panned by critics when it came out, but years later people are still talking watching it and talking about it. Some things are more important than money.

Which is precisely why films like One Battle After Another need to be supported because original films by real filmmakers like PTA, Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese are few and far between these days, and the last bastion against the influx of these soulless multi-million dollar movie franchises, devoid of creativity or original ideas, designed only to make studios millions while giving the audiences absolute crap.

Actor Chadwick Boseman to be honored with posthumous star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

Actor Chadwick Boseman will be honored with a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Boseman starred in some of Hollywood's biggest films, captivating audiences with his powerful performances and character embodiment. One of his first breakout performances was portraying baseball icon Jackie Robinson in "42" back in 2013.

Some of his other standout projects include Marvel's "Black Panther," his portrayal of James Brown in "Get On Up" and the young Thurgood Marshall in "Marshall."

"The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is deeply honored to celebrate Chadwick Boseman's extraordinary legacy with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame," said Hollywood Walk of Fame Producer Ana Martinez. "His powerful performances and enduring impact both on and off screen continue to inspire generations around the world

The ceremony will be held on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 11:30 a.m.

Filmmaker Ryan Coogler and EGOT winner Viola Davis, who both worked alongside Boseman, will be speaking at the event. Boseman's wife, Simone Ledward-Boseman, will be accepting the star on his behalf.

The South Carolina native passed away in 2020 after a private battle with cancer.

In 2022, the nonprofit, Chadwick Boseman Foundation for the Arts, was founded in his legacy, aimed at empowering Black storytellers with the African Diaspora. Its goal is to promote development in various fields, including acting, music, film and dancing, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce said.

Tom Cruise on his first Oscar: Making films 'is who I am'

US film superstar Tom Cruise has received his first-ever Oscar statuette.

Cruise, 63, accepted an honorary Oscar at the annual Governors Awards in Hollywood alongside singer-philanthropist Dolly Parton, choreographer Debbie Allen and production designer Wynn Thomas.

"Making films is not what I do, it is who I am," the four-fold Oscar nominee said on Sunday, accompanying his long-awaited Academy Awards honour with an acceptance speech about his love of cinema.

The Top Gun and Mission: Impossible actor paid tribute to filmmakers in front of and behind the lens, those he has worked with during his 45-year career, as well as the power of the movies.

Upon taking the stage, Cruise received a minutes-long standing ovation and raucous round of applause from film luminaries in the audience, including Steven Spielberg, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jerry Bruckheimer.

Filmmaker Alejandro G Iñárritu, who is directing an upcoming Cruise film, presented the actor with the Governors Award.

"The cinema, it takes me around the world," Cruise said in his speech. "It helps me to appreciate and respect differences. It shows me also our shared humanity, how alike we are in so, so many ways. And no matter where we come from, in that theatre, we laugh together, we feel together, we hope together, we dream together. And that is the power of this art form.

"And that is why it matters, that is why it matters to me. So making films is not what I do, it is who I am," he said.

Cruise made his film debut in 1981 and was previously nominated for best actor for Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire. He was also nominated as best supporting actor in the film Magnolia and for producing Top Gun: Maverick.

The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences selected Cruise for his "incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community", the organisation said.

The Risky Business actor said in his speech that cinema made the world much larger than the one that he knew as a child.

"It opened my eyes. It opened my imagination to the possibility that life could expand far beyond the boundaries that I then perceived in my own life. And that beam of light opened a desire to open the world, and I have been following it ever since," he said.

The actor, who famously performs his own stunts, has also been a fervent advocate for cinema as the streaming industry and social media compete for viewers' time and attention.

"I want you to know that I will always do everything I can to help this art form, to support and champion new voices, to protect what makes cinema powerful - hopefully without too many more broken bones," he added.

Notably, earlier this year Cruise was reportedly set to be recognised by US President Donald Trump when he announced his picks for this year's Kennedy Center honours but the actor declined due to scheduling conflicts.

Best thing about Hollywood is folks such Spielberg (who are capable of making almost artistic movies) realise the value of commercial cinema, any cinematic industry requires continuous flux of commercial cinema to keep people entertained, Tom Cruise probably is the biggest GOAT in that section.
Hollywood is facing a lot of competition and no growth, good too see everyone coming to cheer one of the most hardworking actors out there.

It’s a lot of things- Weinstein , Epstein sagas have given a huge jolt to Influential folks, there is a genuine dislike for many folks that live in their bubble in Hollywood.
Hollywood does great when it caters to all sides of spectrum.

But I think Hollywood will reinvent itself, it has so many talented folks for that to not happen.

The actor presented her with an Elle Women in Hollywood honour at the Four Seasons Hotel and used the moment to express how strongly he supported the couple.

He told the audience that he and his wife Jackie were truly happy that Aniston and Curtis found each other and were enjoying the love story they deserved.

The Saturday Night Live star added the warm statement that the world loved Jim and that he and Jackie loved him as well.

Although Aniston walked the red carpet alone, she later posed for photos with Curtis inside the venue.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun.

Was this a robbery gone wrong?

Many of these homes have barely any security.

Nick Reiner charged with murder of his parents Rob and Michele

Prosecutors in Los Angeles have filed murder charges against Nick Reiner over the deaths of his parents, Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele.

Nick Reiner is facing two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance alleging multiple murders, district attorney Nathan Hochman said.

He could be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole or the death penalty if found guilty. He will be brought to court to formally face charges and enter a plea after he is medically cleared by prison officials, Mr Hochman said. US media report that could happen on Wednesday.

The couple were found dead on Sunday in their home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, with multiple stab wounds.

The charges also include a "special allegation" that Reiner used a knife.

During a news conference on Tuesday, Mr Hochman said no decision had been made about whether prosecutors would seek the death penalty.

The suspect, 32, was also accused of using a "dangerous and deadly weapon, that being a knife".

He was initially expected to appear before a judge later on Tuesday for an arraignment hearing, though this was rescheduled.

Rob Reiner directed a handful of iconic films in a variety of genres, including This is Spinal Tap, Misery and A Few Good Men.

Michele Singer Reiner was an actress, photographer and producer, and the founder of Reiner Light, a photography agency and production company.

LA Police Department chief Jim McDonnell told the news conference: "This case is heartbreaking and deeply personal, not only for the Reiner family and their loved ones, but for the entire city.

"We extend our deepest condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy."

Asked whether the murder weapon was recovered, Mr Hochman said that would be revealed in court.

Officials said autopsies, which have to be completed, would determine the precise cause, manner and times of death.

'We will miss them forever'
Rob Reiner's other major works included Stand By Me, The Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally.

Billy Crystal, who played Harry in the seminal romantic comedy, was one of many actors, writers and directors - who were close to the Reiners - paying their respects in a joint statement shared with the Associated Press two days after the director and his wife were found dead.

He was a pretty good director and probably the best when it comes to adapting Stephen King. Two more films of his his that earned him alot of notoriety: This is Spinal Tap and The Princess Bride.

Always enjoyed him in small roles in movies and TV shows too, and he seemed like a really nice guy in real life too. Really tragic news and the manner in which his life came to an end. RIP.

Great watch. I could only finish it over multiple sittings, it’s pretty lengthy. But yes Scorsese directing De Niro, Pesci, Al Pacino etc again was a treat. Could watch this one again for sure.

LOL. Yeah.

If I remember correctly, it was around 3 hours long.

But, it was worth it. An all-time classic for me.

Some really good movies in there.

1917 is a piece of art. Django unchained and Inglorious Basterds are quintessential Tarantino movies. Liked both. Favourite Tarantino movie though is Pulp Fiction.

Out of the Batman movies, Dark Knight was extraordinary. The other two also good but not at the same level.

2012 Batman was a bit boring. I agree.

I enjoyed 2003 one. It was okay.

2008 one was the best. Heath Ledger killed it.

Sydney Sweeney: I want to make films that save people's lives

Sydney Sweeney wants to make films that will "impact and hopefully save people's lives", she has told the BBC.

The 28-year-old US actor has this year appeared in psychological thriller The Housemaid and boxing biopic Christy, which both address issues around domestic violence.

Sweeney calls the topic "prevalent" and says she takes a "lot of care" when playing these types of roles.

"Being able to have a film that's on a more commercial level talk about a very difficult topic is important," she adds.

Sweeney is currently starring as Millie Calloway in The Housemaid, which is based on the 2022 novel of the same name by Freida McFadden.

The novel is an international bestseller and has generated a large following, especially among the reading community on TikTok.

Sweeney says she is "a huge fan of the book" and that she "loved all the characters".

"I love complex, juicy, crazy, twisted stories. This is a dream project," she adds.

The film also features Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar, as Nina and Andrew Winchester, who employ Sweeney's character in their home.

Seyfried and Sweeney were chosen to play the two female leads in The Housemaid because of their physical resemblances, but Seyfried says the similarities do not end there.

"There's a similarity between us that is uncanny, and it's really fun to work with people [who] are doing life in a similar way, have similar ideals about the job and life," she tells the BBC.

Sweeney also says the pair have developed a "dynamic" where they "can enjoy being around" each other - and their relationship means they can "go to these crazy places and discover so much more within your character".

'Getting the tone right'
Seyfried's character Nina grapples with complex mental health issues throughout the film, which at times make it a difficult watch.

"You have to play it as realistic as possible because it needs to reflect real life," she says.

The Housemaid has been compared to domestic thrillers of the 1990s, like The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct. But it has a markedly modern twist with the physical and mental abuse plot lines in the film.

Seyfried, who is known for her roles in Mamma Mia! and Mean Girls, believes the cast "nailed getting the tone right" and hopes that despite the movie being entertainment, that people "come out with a better understanding of domestic violence" and "broaden their horizons".

She adds that this is "especially" true for "people who haven't thankfully had to deal with it".

This is echoed by director Paul Feig, who admits he was "nervous" about handling the subject sensitively.

"I made sure there wasn't any physical abuse, that it was more psychological abuse," he says.

Domestic abuse in film has become a hot topic for Hollywood, sparked by the promotional tour for 2024 film It Ends With Us, which was criticised by some for packaging it as a romantic story rather than one of abuse.

Sklenar, who appears in both The Housemaid and It Ends With Us, says it is "challenging" to take on the role of an abuser.

He describes his characters - Andrew Winchester in The Housemaid and Atlas Corrigan in It Ends With Us - as "polar opposites".

"When it comes to acting, you can try all you want, but ultimately sometimes it just affects you," he says.

"It's intense and it's ultimately going to affect you in certain ways."

The film has received mostly positive reviews, including four stars from the Guardian, which said Feig and his cast "deliver with terrific gusto; this is an innocent holiday treat".

The reception will be welcome for Sweeney after being at the centre of much drama and discussion in 2025.

Her American Eagle jeans ads drew criticism for raising issues over race and beauty standards. Sweeney told People Magazine earlier this month she was "against hate and divisiveness" and had been surprised by reaction to the campaign.

And her career was under scrutiny after a string of box office flops - but The Housemaid opened with a healthy $19m (£14m) in North America last weekend.

That's no surprise given that the original novel was a huge hit, selling more than 1.6 million copies worldwide.

Two sequels have also been published, meaning further film adaptations could be on the cards.

Feig, whose previous films include Bridesmaids and The Heat, believes novels will become an even more fertile source of material for Hollywood because "studios always want something that is a known quality" to "justify their ability to put a lot of money" into the project.

But he says he tries not to let books with a huge audience and fanbase dictate what projects he makes, because "there are plenty of books that are really popular that just don't work as movies".

Feig adds that it has been "fun" to work with Rebecca Sonnenshine's adapted screenplay for The Housemaid, but that he has "restored" some parts of the book that "readers really would miss if they weren't in there".

There is also an "extra ending that's not in the book", he says, "so readers can get something new that they didn't expect".

The Housemaid is now showing in UK cinemas.
