He was pretty much booted out unceremoniously after what we felt was the 2019 World Cup debacle.

He moved away from the trauma, joined Sri Lanka, must've felt he's turned a new leaf and headed for greener pastures.

But fast forward to 2023, its ground hog day type thing for him.

He will soon be facing similar questions as 2019 and wondering why the heck did he comeback for more of the same.

They say lightning never falls twice at the same place but spare a thought for poor Mickey...

His appointment has been absolute shambles.

PCB should have moved on from him after he made it clear that he was not going to quit his County job and take over as head coach.

The current setup is a complete joke. What is even his job description? He is not a coach, he is not a selector. What is he doing?

And why we do have a coach when he is with the team during this World Cup? What does he do on a daily basis and what does Bradburn do?

Where do their responsibilities converge and diverge?

This experiment needs to end after this World Cup and he should never be associated with Pakistan cricket again in any capacity.

He was poor coach for Pakistan in his first stint, flop for SriLanka and Derbyshire and yet we recalled him. Championship Trophy 2017 was Sarfraz captaincy and some good players in form like Fakhar, Amir, Hasan Ali, even Junaid and Hafeez contributed well

Never understood the desperation for reappointing Mickey Arthur.

He was nothing special when he was here tye first time and he didn't do anything extraordinary when he was sacked and took another job.

Also I have to say this because it's been annoying me for a while - the bowling is possibly the most overrated aspect of the side.

Shaheen hasn't been the same since his injury.

Rauf is an awful ODI bowler and you can't say otherwise just because he does well in a few T20s.

And the best bowler we have is a kid that's had his injuries. He's the only one I'd put my hat on if the side is struggling to take wickets.

Regarding the spinners, I've never seen a mod inept department. Shadab has been off form for more than a year and yet he continues to play.

Usama I feel has blown whatever chance he had of cementing his place in the side. Just like Shadab it's boundaries galore when he bowls.

Also Nawaz, can someone tell me what exactly does he do for the side? He's an average to poor spinner and he also rarely, if at all, controls the over the RR. Oh and he's the most overrated batsmen. Awful.

So yeah I agree about the coach, but I also feel the bowling coach/players are to blame aswell.

While he has been an extremely poor coach in the international level for last 5 years or so, does he really deserve to be blamed for the mess?

What could have he possibly done when the entire unit is run by Mughal E Azam?

Did the emperor even care to listen to any input that Mickey possibly had in his mind to share?

Mickey is the designated Pak team cheerleader - he is there only to dance to Dil Dil Pakistan 😆

Don’t know what you guys see in him - except for that one fluke CT17 victory, the guy has seen failures in every single international team and has been sacked from all of them. Even the Division 2 county team he is coaching is languishing at the bottom. And you guys are giving him top dollar to be a consultant head coach? Doesn’t make sense.

I would say it is going pretty good for him. He has 2 jobs, making good amount of money. Even if he is fired from Pakistan job he still has work and great life in England. He has made enough in his life time to live a relaxed life in some English village.

He had a bigger impact in his last tenure but this tenure he looks toothless to change anything.

Arthur is not a part of the problem. He has zero say in anything this time around. Literally none. He has no role. Pcb just appointed him as a glorified good luck charm.

They might as well have told our cricketers that the tooth fairy is real, and you might as well break your teeth, put it under a pillow and pray that she makes your wish come true.

Babar does whatever he wants, hafeez straight up told babar to atleast try a specialist spinner like abrar for the cup, and Babar was like no, Shadab and nawaz only.

Babar has full control and say over everything. Zaka ashraf rejected the squad proposal made by babar and inzi, but babar threatened to abandon the team so they forcefully selected.

Mickey isn't a goat by any means, nor am I saying he is, infact the fakhar, Imam, Babar trio at the top is something he started and as soon as fakhar went out of form, Imam and Babar were exposed.

Mickey is a bang Average and weak coach, but blame 2018 on him, don't blame 2023 on him or bradburn. They have zero say. Its all the babar show. Only person who's ahead of babar in the hierarchy is rizwan. Rizwan is the ultimate Puppet Master and babar is the strongest string, everyone else is a Puppet.

Arthur is all talk, and he knows what Pakistani cricket fans like to hear. If he were half serious about Pak cricket, he would have left his county job.

I have one question when these guys give a post match interview they cant come with sentence in English so when the English speaking coaches are coaching what the communication level going to be like? coaching isn't all practical sometimes you have to sit in front of the white board in class room

I guess Pakistan should rope in shoaib akhtar as bowling/Head coach and
M.hafeez as batting coach.
May be engage saqlain as spin consultant..
There is no need for fancy foreign coaches..

Can't we make viv Richards the coach? He was a goated coach for quetta during early psl. He's the reason quetta use to be a champions team

I'm not even kidding, Make viv Richards coach, cheif selector and give him all of pcb, heck sell pcb to him for free.

Arthur seems like a nice chap but is a limited coach. His “Derbyshire project“ after two years has had then finish bottom of Divsion 2 in his first year and two from bottom in his second, with not single one win in fourteen gamesthis year (remember he prioritised this over being Pak coach).
Yet he was lauded by some on this forum as a saviour.

That said, no coach would make a difference given the machinations at the PCB and in the overall structure of the game in Pakistan.
No foreign coach worth his salt would take the Pakistan gig, so if the PCB insist on a foreigner you either have has beens (or a never was).

I don't believe for a second this is a brand of cricket that Arthur wants them to play.

To me it seems like the players are happy and comfortable with this brand of cricket.

What he wants is very different from whether he has worked with them on this. He didn’t even turn up during Asia cup when he could have tweaked a few things around, how can he now change things in the middle of the tournament?

Highly overrated, and deceives Pakistan's cricket-loving public with frequent drama (either in action when the camera zooms on him during a match or with his absurd pressers passing the buck on someone/something else for the team's failures).

I would be interested in what Mickey has to say after this WC is over. PCB has every right to fire him and the coaches but i want their feedback to be taken on board before letting them go. To me it appears the coaching staff is waiting for the WC to be over so that they can collect their paycheques and go home. Mickey was smart to insist on retaining the Derbyshire job

His return has been an absolute disaster class. Quite disappointed in him. Under him and his new team, Pakistan has faltered even in fielding.

Gone are the days of Rixon when our fielding was reaching new heights. Sigh.

Mickey needs to be booted out. He has no new ideas, seems to have no positive influence.

There's a video going around mickey giving a breifing before pak vs india match apparently and you can clearly see babar focusing eating noodles

Mickey knows full well coaches are sacked after world cups.

It happened to him once so he wasn't gonna repeat the same mistake

Rixon should have been made head coach. It is a blunder by PCB.

Its unfair to blame Mickey for this. Even before he became Director Babar was playing the same team day and day in be it Nepal or Australia. He was comfirtable with his select group of players. I remember when Najam came a few months back he made Shan Massod the VC of team but Babar didn't even play in playing XI as he was insecure. Shan was one of the few batsmen that was consistent in t20 WC last year and we all know his more suitable format is ODIs than t20s. But still he wasn't given the chance.

While teams like India, Australia etc were building their bench Babar persisted on playing the same group which resulted in physical burnout and the fatigue is clearly visible in their fielding. Wasim akram mentioned in Pavilion that he knew Fakhar was suffering from knee injury during LPL but still he played in Afghanistan series and Asia cup. Naseem too carried the injury in LPL and in Asia cup his body finally gave up and also put the whole team in chaos. this was because they just didn't develop a bench and panicked when they couldn't find a right replacement for Naseem.

To add to it the players were more intersted in their contracts on the eve of WC than preparing for it.

I remember last year players almost revolted by trending a hastag #sochnabemanahain when the board wanted to rest babar and co for the tri series against Afghanistan. Moreover Shadab even mocked the decision to rest key players after losing the 2nd t20. If I was the PCB chief I would have banned him from any leadership role in Pakistani team or PSL. But no action was taken.

Mismanagement of player injuries, not testing bench, playing same players, emphasis on personal rankings etc have been going on since during Rameez raja tenure. Its unfair to blame Mickey solely for this debacle. I think Babar has more say tham Mickey or Inzamam. the latter two are just happy going along with the flow and collecting their fat paychecks. When Inzi became chief selector he said he is not making any changes to WC squad as these players are playing together for a long time. In that case he should have said hence I am not selecting a new team and also will only take the position after WC.

I am not saying Mickey is not accountable but currently Babar wields more power than all the support staff put together. So you need to ask kows it going for you Babar.

To add to it the players were more intersted in their contracts on the eve of WC than preparing for it. they wanted to play in unlimited leagues, wanted a cut in ICC payments, Babar and friends even decided which players need to be awarded central contracts. Got themselves a 200% rise in fees. But did they sit to develop tactics for teams in the WC at this time? Even if developed I didn't see anything on the field.

Arthur is a problem the joke of dil dil Pakistan was absolute nuts coming from him.
Wasim called him out for it as well, even his post game analysis seems like a joke.

There is a reason why Najam Sethi went to Mickey Arthur, because no other high profile foreign coach wants to work with the PCB and the Pakistani team and we have tried all the local options.

I agree. Rixon should be paid top dollar.

Rixon is never going to work with the PCB or Pakistan Cricket ever again. He publicly blasted the PCB for being unprofessional i.e. not paying him his salary on time

I don't know much how coaches get selected and what is the criteria.
I have one question if anyone can shed light on this.
Do we really need to import foreign coaches?

Yes, local coaches do not have the people or technical skills to get the job done.

The biggest hurdle to hiring quality coaches is Pakistan is not livable for majority of SENA people so the pickings are thin.

In the last decade you has waqar, misbah, younis, yousuf, azhar Mehmood and Saqlain in the coaching staff. Now ask the question to yourself what results they produced.

Interseting stuff really we do not have well trained coaches OR just oldies take over the system again & again? Misbah, waqar, yusuf etc.
I can't believe we don't have coaches outside the retired national cricketers.

Maybe before that we can do some comparisons btw local and foreign coaches in last 20 years?

There isn’t much more to say here.

Everyone wants to get rid of Mickey. I’m yet to hear a realistic solution as to with whom.

I want him to be heard atleast. I am sure the PCB will do a review, post mortum of this campaign, his opinion and feedback has to be noted.

So I feel like having Mickey as the director and Bradbury as the coach has been a disaster since neither have had any impact and don’t provide any meaningful input to the team..

After the WC is over - I’d like to see the following changes:

Director of Cricket: Mohd. Hafeez

Head Coach: Shoaib Malik

Batting Coach: Aaron Finch

Bowling Coach: Sohail Tanvir

Now these may seem like unusual choices but I really feel like we need new blood and younger folks in our management staff who understand the modern game and the pressure associated with it..

Plus Mohd. Hafeez has a wonderful cricketing brain and can really excel as a Director of Cricket.

Thoughts?

I can't really blame him as he's not responsible for how badly we bowled and fielded

Please keep mediocrity out

Shoaib Malik and Hafeez are the most mediocre cricketers to have played 15 plus years

If they were in SENA or India, both wouldn't even be considered for domestic cricket

Plus Malik's character and morals are questionable. But pakra nahi gaya like Wasim Akram toh now we are forced to respect him

I would go with Umar Gul as bowling coach, Younis Khan as head coach and mushtaq ahmed as spin coach

Head Coach: Hafeez
Batting Coach: need a foreign coach here with expertise in modern cricket
Bowling Coach: Mo Akram
Spin Bowling Coach: Mushtaq
Fielding Coach: Rixon
Chief Selector: Shoaib Akhtar

We need foreign coaches. Like the ones we had in 2021 t20 world cup as well as babar and rizzu drama ending and we'll be fine

No head coach/director can suddenly turn Haris Rauf and Pakistani spinners into half-decent bowlers overnight. That's on the selection committee and bowling coach. Arthur can't go there and bowl for these pie-lobbers.

The 2 spinners(whichever 2 Pakistan pick) and Haris Rauf are together losing these matches for Pakistan. The 3 of them bowl in the middle overs and get smashed like no tomorrow.

I've heard that the players were on the end of a tongue-lashing from the coaching staff after the loss to Afghanistan.

A few home truths were told to the players.

Let's see if it has any impact on them.

That's the Mickey Arthur we knew and know. Sadly it could just be too late. The PCB should have given him complete authority on the squad over Babar from the very beginning.

Not looking good for Mickey

Will have to face some uncomfortable questions from the media soon.

He may not like it.

Not seen him this miserable, guess since the last World Cup!

Wonder what Mickey can say now to placate fan anger?

I think Mickey and PCB will part ways after the World Cup.

It's the Pakistan way and I don't see him continuing.

It's the Pakistan way and I don't see him continuing.

And reports coming from Pakistan seem to indicate that.

As per a media report, Zaka Ashraf will talk about the possible changes in the coaching staff and there will be legal consultation on their contracts as well.

The name of Justin Langer would be discussed for the coaching.

Good, but the circumstances in which we pulled him in were ridiculous.

The PCB is as much to blame for this failed stint as Mickey is.

The problem is now who we get to replace him. Nobody competent wants anything to do with us.

Why didn't Mickey Arthur tell our players about this before the World Cup? Maybe he'll admit his mistakes and acknowledge where he fell short as a director.

This will be a huge mistake if true..

Yes I do have concerns about results along with his lack of authority but you cannot cut your losses after 2 months on the job. That is ridiculous and he needs more time with the players and PCB administration..

Give him a more expanded role until CT 2025. Then decide his fate..

The expectation should be we have WIN CT 2025 as it is on home soil..

Wasim Akram on Mickey Arthur:

“It was his stubbornness who was the chairman before the current person that he needed him (Mickey Arthur). Why do we need him? Who is going to question that person?”

“Please tell me if he (Mickey Arthur) is the director of the Pakistan cricket team or the director of Pakistan cricket. Please, can someone explain it to me?”

“I have been saying for a decade that if you need a foreign coach, you should definitely hire him, but it is a job, and he is getting paid handsomely for it. The rules that are followed in the corporate world are: if you want to go on vacation and you can have a vacation for 2 months, you can just go right now, or you can just take a vacation for 1 month and you can just come back. You cannot do that when a tour finishes, you go back, and when the next tour starts, you come back. This is kind of a joke to me.”

I don't think Mickey will want to continue as a coach at the NCA.

My guess is that he will want to come to some sort of agreement with PCB and walk away back to Derbyshire.

Why is it Mickey who decided what he wants? NCA or PCT or whatever. My personal feeling is that if you have to remove, just remove, no compromises due to financial reasons. This is like a cancerous cell

Not as easy as that.

Mickey is under contract. PCB cannot just remove him, they'd have to pay up the remainder of his contract if they did that.

Mickey Arthur has taken Derbyshire backwards, in the County Championship 2024, Derbyshire has not won a single match in five attempts. Some tough conversations and demands are overdue. The team is individually far better than the whole at the moment in all three departments. The coaching staff has a fortnight now to turn things around. I wonder, still, why PCB was so desperate to keep him involved in the system.

Heard it all before so many times when he was affiliated with the Pakistan team.

Mickey Arthur’s side record their first victory of the 2024 season!!

The Falcons defeat Leicestershire Foxes by 4 wickets at Edgbaston in the group stage of the T20 Vitality Blast

Absolutely shambolic, again. At some point, someone needs to say this...Mickey Arthur is not the answer.

After first victory of the season 2024 yesterday

Today Derbyshire defeated by Lancashire by 57 runs in a Vitality Blast match.

Under Mickey Arthur's coaching, Derbyshire is facing the same middle-order batting problems that Pakistan experienced during his tenure.

At least he realised first principles matter. Fitness counts.

Yesterday, Derbyshire won against Nottinghamshire in the T20 blast 2024 match. Mickey would be happy no??
