Picked for the Test series, yet now left out of the 1st ODI against South Africa despite being man of the series against New Zealand.

How best to utilise Shaheen despite the temptation to play him in all 3 formats?

I surprised he’s not playing today. We have definitely gone with the wrong bowling combination. I would say we should play him ODI and T20s and leave him out of tests for a while.

he should play the majority of the odis we have coming up. Especially those happening in England just before the WC.

Don’t know why everyone is making such a big deal out of him not playing today. He’ll be starting come the WC. These games are just there to get everyone in to form and rotate the pacers around. The same people here would be complaining had Shaheen played today and got a niggle. The fans need to be patient when there’s a rotation policy being applied to fast bowlers.

He really should have played today as this is a big series, but I'm sure he'll get a chance later on in the series anyway

At the moment what we need is to play our best ODI team possible to prepare for the world cup. So unless he has a fitness problem he should have been in the team.

finally somebody has the common sense to understand this simple logic

you need to try out all the players now.

once the england series starts we'll have a better idea of the team

Unless there is an injury or he's fatigued, there's no reason for him to not be playing every ODI game that pakistan has before the world cup . . at this point, you need him and your certain starters to be getting as much game time as possible . .

His body is still developing and his workload needs to be managed. More than happy he is rested.

Remember Pat Cummins. He was out of the game for 5 years.

Play him in ODIs in preparation of the world Cup.

Play him in Tests and 4 day games such as A-games and tour games as much as you can while keeping an eye on his fitness.

Don't play him in T20s unless it's an important game.

We have a real asset on our hands, don't ruin his development by playing him in T20s. He needs to learn to become a top Test bowler.

Butterfly effect.

Perhaps giving Shaheen Afridi a rest in the 1st ODI after the Test Series is leading to him bowling like this in the 2nd ODI.

Don't overbowl him.. use him for tests and multi nation tournaments at this age so many injuries occur imo.

Overbowling him would be a crime. We want him to keep bowling into his 30s and not be discarded in his mid-20s. Have him in every ODI and T20 squad but play him sparingly and never in dead-rubbers.

For the current series, I would play him for the next game but then give him a rest during the fourth.

If Pakistan played him in every match, there would be people complaining that they're going to burn him out.

Disappointing pace in follow up spells same was the case in test matches he needs to up his fitness to be a great bowler he has the skills but without fitness they are useless

He is a potentially legendary bowler but fans should be patient of him and keep faith. He can really be the next big thing in world cricket.

Not sure about his old ball skills, but he should generally bowl about 6 overs upfront

Given that Shaheen relies on swing, especially inswing, he should be bowled for the first 7 overs straight while the shine is still there. He has not really developed his reverse swing yet, so later in the innings he may not be as effective, so the more he bowls upfront, the more effective he will be overall in his spell.

He should't play every game. Give him some rest. Pakistan really needs him for the WC with the other seamers not finding form.

I said it months ago, keep him away from T20s and T20 leagues. They won’t help his development. Playing first class cricket in England would help him a lot.

For Pakistan he should be used in tests and ODIs but can be rested in dead rubbers.

He should play as many ODIs and T20s as possible. Select him for test cricket next year, he isn't ready for test right now

His comments to media today

"No disappointment [in loss], we were good in the last few overs with Hasan Ali batting; we came back very well but they are good in batting and they chased the target but that is all part of the game"

"My approach is to play good aggressive cricket"

Does he speak English? If so, then it's really good.

Or, was he addressing Urdu journalists, and you've translated it?

He speaks a bit of English.

He is nothing less than a "magic". A gift that will make sure Pakistan stay away from becoming minnows.

Pakistan's best player in my eyes.

Rarely am I in awe of a player before their international debut but after his PSL last year, it made me realise he's not only got all the ingredients to become a top bowler but a fast learner as well. Pakistan cricket is miserable to watch and follow 90% of the time these days but the best thing they did in that other 10% was to fast track him to international level rather than leaving him to rot in domestics with some poor domestic coaches.

I'd like to see him strengthen and also achieve the fitness levels that we saw from someone like Wasim, so he can bowl faster for a longer duration. Technically he just needs to develop a potent short ball so he can fully utilise his great height.

He's the shining light in Sarfaraz's dark tunnel.

I am really impressed with the accent. As usual, issue with the sentence formation.

Hopefully, he'll learn, as it looks like he might be speaking at lots of presentations in the future, due to his performances.

On a sidenote, why are there less number of English speaking Pak players currently, compared to the last decade.

Basically it should increase, I reckon, due to the importance of education in the current scenario.

From past decade.

Shehzad
Butt
Hafeez
Malik
Younis
Misbah
Afridi
Wahab
Asif
Akhtar

All were capable enough, compared to the current generation.

Even the current stars in Babar, Shadab and Hassan are not that good compared to the above mentioned players.

Any idea as to why the English speaking players are decreasing in number?

Whereas, in India, almost all of the players speak good English, compared to past decade.

He is young and still learning the ropes. To prevent burnout, avoid playing him in T20's and also limit his ODI games.

His true worth and skill will be tested in the next two years.

Hasan Ali had a wonderful rookie year but has cooled off since then.

Shaheen has better height, swing, and the left-arm variety; let’s see what he makes of them,

I would keep all our key players away from the mickey mouse T20s. This includes Amir and Shaheen.

He needs to bowl more in tests to become a better bowler.

How he works on his fitness will define his career at the moment he is on average bowling 130-140 if he can turn in to a 135-145 his output will increase

Exactly, they should be compensated though. The only league (other than PSL) I would be okay with Shaheen playing is the BBL since it's actually decent quality cricket, and they have proper coaching and facilities.

He should be bowling in all formats. Playing in T20s will teach him defensive bowling under pressure at the death. Tests will teach him how to setup a batsman. He will be a better ODI bowler as well. My only concern is with his fielding. Not about his misfielding but the fear that he might get injured. His dive is awkward and could result in an injury. Amazing first year!!!

I will stress again his fitness is atrocious at the moment his average pace went down by 10 kmph in both the second test and second spell last odi and he looked impotent on both occasion .The only way he will be world class if he can keep pace in all spells, the like of Bumrah, Shami are not more skillful then our pacers but there fitness is onanother level so they keep coming at you and get the job done our pacers have to step up in terms of fitness same goes for Amir, Abbas and Hassan they struggle as the series and match goes on and their output goes down

Overall, Shehzad is the best ever Pakistani cricketer at speaking English. I was amazed, as he was even using some slang English words and had no issues with sentence formation.

I think you are forgetting Shan

Keep him away from T20s.

He should be getting the M Amir treatment. Wrap him up in a cotton wool and protect him from getting burned out.
