How far can Zak Crawley go in his Test career?

Did we not make this guy look like one of the best openers ever?

a 4 and a 0 on the best batting pitch in an English Test match for years is a dismal return. Time for Zak to go back to county cricket.

a 4 and a 0 on the best batting pitch in an English Test match for years is a dismal return. Time for Zak to go back to county cricket.

Averages 18 in 30 innings since his 267 vs Pakistan 2 years ago. Only 3 50+ scores in that time. Worrying numbers.

If England win (lol) or draw this, then Zak might get one more life. If they lose it then he might go.

Sky Sports' Simon Doull thinks it is key for Zak Crawley to step away and find runs from somewhere in order to get his Test career up and running again:

"It looks like his mind is scrambled at the moment.

"He needs runs and test cricket is the hardest place to get runs.

"Does he need to go back and just get some runs.

"There is a big decision to be made, do they continue down this road where he is out of sorts and maybe ruin a test career or say we still think you're good enough but you need to go and get some runs.

"They are always going to get one more game than they deserve in this new regime but does he deserve one more?"

Not very far made a career out of the 267 vs Pakistan very little to speak of since with a career average now near 25 time to go back to domestic and work on his game.

Played a messy innings today and it was painful to watch him — survived a drop and some dodgy running before naively holing out. Also ran out Lees.

Did play some nice shots as well, but we already know he can do that.

I think Zak’s mind is mashed and he is about to be dropped.

He can come back in the future but probably in the middle order.

Get Compo Mk III in instead.

I raised that point during first month of county this year if you remember.

I was vouching for Compton and Robson/Bairstow. Although now I feel like Lees is definitely an option that should be persisted with.

Lees is looking good. He should stay.

Crawley will surely be stepped down soon, although it will be equally interesting to see who McStokes replace him with because he is an attacking player and with their established philosophy they are unlikely to go for a stodgy low strike rate opener in his place… of which English cricket produces many.

Keeps his place for India.

They’re really backing him.

Still feel he’s more suited to the middle order. Didn’t he make his 200 against Pakistan at #3? Don’t know why they turned him into an opener

Zak Crawley averages 16.40 in Tests this summer, the lowest by any England opener in a home season, with a cut-off of 10 innings.

Just shows the decline in county cricket due to t20 franchises

Red ball cricketers of high quality will be produced less and less.

What you will get in future are limited over specialists batsmen who are gun batsmen can hit shots and fast bowlers who will become white ball specialists

I don't see the point reminiscing about red ball cricket because you will see less players in future interested in it and even the boards won't value it because the money isn't there and neither the viewership especially the next generation of cricket viewers.

Coach Brendon McCullum believes Zak Crawley "can win matches for England" despite the opener going 14 Test innings without a half-century.

Crawley's lean spell continued with scores of nine and 13 in the first-Test defeat by South Africa at Lord's.

"He's a talent, and there are not too many of those guys floating around," said McCullum. "He's still learning his game at this level. That will take some patience and persistence.

"I believe in him, that's for sure."

Kent's Crawley averages 26 in his 26 Tests, having made his debut against New Zealand in 2019.

The 267 he made against Pakistan in 2020 is the 10th-highest individual score made by an England man in Tests.

But his 121 against West Indies in March was the last time he managed a score higher than 46. Overall, the 24-year-old has only passed 50 seven times in 48 innings.

"You have to think about the overall package," said New Zealander McCullum. "We have some players that have been put in those positions because they have certain skillsets.

"I look at a guy like Zak and his skillset is not to be a consistent cricketer. He's not that type of player.

"He's put in that situation because he has a game which, when he gets going, he can win matches for England."

Crawley is set to keep his place for the second Test against the Proteas at Old Trafford, which begins on Thursday.

McCullum rejected the idea Crawley would benefit from being left out.

"That's not how I think," he said. "We want to keep giving guys opportunities, then their skill and talent can come out.

"We have to be really positive around the language we use with him and be really consistent with the selections around that, to keep giving guys opportunities.

"Selection loyalty is really important. Not only does it build loyalty from guys in the side, it also builds loyalty from guys on the outside because they know when their opportunity does come they will be afforded the same loyalty."

The innings-and-12-run defeat at Lord's, to which England succumbed before tea on the third day, was McCullum's first as coach following four straight wins.

A feature of England's successful start to the summer was some aggressive performances with the bat, but the home side were bowled out for 165 and 149 by a powerful South Africa bowling attack.

And McCullum believes his side could have done more to put pressure on the Proteas.

"One of the messages we'll be talking about is 'did we go hard enough?'" he said. "Could we have gone a little harder and turned some pressure back on the opposition?

"When the game was in the balance, when some the spells from their boys were testing, we could have been a little braver to turn some pressure back on to the opposition."

England v South Africa: James Anderson praises 'brilliantly intelligent' Zak Crawley innings

James Anderson praised a "brilliantly intelligent" evening vigil from England opener Zak Crawley on the first day of the second Test against South Africa.

Crawley, without a half-century in 14 Test innings, crucially soaked up intense South African pressure with an unbeaten knock of 17 not out from 77 deliveries.

It helped England recover from 43-3 to 111-3 in reply to the Proteas' 151 all out at Old Trafford.

"He played exactly how we needed him to play," said pace bowler Anderson.

Crawley's dogged resistance - this was by far his slowest Test innings when he has reached double figures - came as part of an unbroken stand of 68 with Jonny Bairstow, who was fluent in reaching 38 from 45 balls.

"For someone whose output has not been what he would want it to be, he read the situation brilliantly," added Anderson, England's all-time leading Test wicket-taker.

"The way he played allowed Jonny to play his natural game."

Crawley's 121 against West Indies in March was the last time he made a Test score higher than 46.

Though his 267 against Pakistan in 2020 is the 10th-highest individual score ever by an England man in Tests, he entered this match with an average of 26 from 26 appearances.

He had been backed by coach Brendon McCullum, who said he can "win matches for England".

Kent's Crawley showed good judgement and patience, and he left the ball well.

Crawley came through a particularly taxing battle with South Africa's Keshav Maharaj, despite looking less than certain against the left-arm spinner.

Speaking on Test Match Special, former England spinner Vic Marks said the innings was "the best 17 not out Crawley had ever made".

Ex-England fast bowler Steven Finn added: "His team-mates will be pleased with him. He was willing to do the hard yards."

The Crawley-Bairstow stand ensured England did not surrender the initiative after bowling South Africa out cheaply.

The Proteas, leading the three-Test series 1-0, opted to bat first despite the gloomy morning conditions in Manchester.

England took advantage, with Anderson and Stuart Broad claiming three wickets each.

"It felt like it was not the worst toss to lose," said Lancashire's Anderson, playing on his home ground.

"For a bowler, when you see it moving around like that, it's always great. Everyone who bowled did superbly."

South Africa's Kagiso Rabada defended their decision, saying the tactic was correct following the choice to include two spinners - Maharaj and Simon Harmer - in their side.

The Old Trafford surface looks dry and could offer sharp turn and uneven bounce later in the match.

"Generally if you're playing two spinners, you want to bat first," said fast bowler Rabada.

"The wicket is getting drier and drier by the second. Simon was in the game, his second ball turned quite a bit. It was the right decision."

Zak gets his first half century of the summer!

And it’s the 8th quickest half century ever scored by an England batsman in Tests.

36 balls, 9 fours, played beautifully.

The young man Crawley shows resilience and poise to take England to 84/0 in the run chase against South Africa.

Seems to perform against Pakistan. Scores a 38-ball fifty, his seventh in Test cricket

An 86 ball hundred! Pakistan the lucky team for him. Took an excellent review when on 99

This guy in the first Test lol. Ridiculous

Batting in absolute Siddhartha mode here.

This guy in the first Test lol. Ridiculous

Batting in absolute Siddhartha mode here.

BazMac is interesting on him - Creepy won’t always score runs, hasn’t got the technique, but on certain decks against certain bowling is a matchwinner.

As long as he keeps playing Pakistan, his international career will be relevant. Cannot score against any other opposition.

Two more Tests here to potentially fill his boots.

Starts off his Ashes campaign with a 56-ball fifty

52 balls, 8 boundaries with 4 of them coming in one Bumrah over. Brilliant from Crawley so far. Reached his 50 with a massive 6.

Zak Crawley was playing a gem of an innings today for England against India in the second test. He is gone now after making 73 off 132 deliveries.

Two beautiful innings from him in this Test. He’s improved so much. Was everyone’s scapegoat 18 months ago whereas now he has shaped himself into a key player.

Another 50 - and under tough conditions but played at breakneck speed

The former England captain, Michael Vaughan, opined that Zak Crawley's Test average doesn't do justice to his talent. Speaking about the 26-year-old's batting exploits in a YouTube interview:

"He's the greatest ever player to average 31 in Test cricket. I've not seen a better player that is averaging 31 in Test matches. He makes batting look so easy. You watch him, and he strolls to the crease, and before you know, he's on 20, 25, 30, 40, and then 50, raises his bat, playing great hits down the ground, then he whips one through mid-wicket."

"Oh, here we go, keep going, keep going, Oh! he's out. Happens every time. He's got to kick on. He's got to somehow find a way of kicking on on these little nice fancy fifties. You gotta get the daddy hundreds."

Zak Crawley is playing a good knock once again in the 5th and final test match of the series. Currently batting at 63 runs with Joe Root at the other end. He needs to bat throughout the day if England has to score a big 1st innings score. Crawley has been a key batter for them on this tour.

No hundred for Crawley, who is now gone for 79 runs to a sizzling delivery from Kuldeep. It was a magical ball TBH. Superb from Kuldeep.

Probably the best batter for England on this 2024 tour of India. NO?

vGcqvwT.png

Averages 33 in Test cricket. Need to improve that. England need better test batters, openers must average 35+ and middle order batters who can average 40+ in long run.

He was the best English batsman this series, expect big runs from him the rest of the year against easier opponents.

He is the most consistent among English batter in current series. Only one with four 50+ scores and 40+ batting average.

First visiting opener since Hayden in 2001 to score 4 50s in a series in India. He looked very comfortable against Ashwin, Jadeja with his long reach. Only Kuldeep troubled him, he also needs to develop the habit of making his starts count, I am sure he will get there.

he also needs to develop the habit of making his starts count, I am sure he will get there.

Didn’t even used to get the starts lol. Was a walking single figure score.

Now having carved out a way to consistently find starts, he needs to take the next step of converting his 50s more often.

His career average has gone from 25 to 33 in 2 years, so with such a leap he must have been averaging 40+ during this period of improvement, which is more than good enough atm.

He is the biggest beneficiary of Bazball approach. Just 26, he can easily correct his stats now that he will enter his peak years and England plays so many tests.

Zak Crawley: England Test opener targets ODI and T20 spot on more regular basis

England Test opener Zak Crawley is targeting a more regular role in England's white-ball team, telling the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast that he feels his game is 'quite suited' to the 50-over and T20 formats.

Crawley has played only eight ODIs for England since making his debut in 2021, averaging 28.42, while he has yet to make an appearance in the T20 team.

After enduring a dreadful 2022 summer in the Test team, where he struck just one fifty across 13 innings, registering seven single-digit scores, Crawley has been one of England's standout performers since, leading to calls for his inclusion in the white-ball arena.

"I've always wanted to be a good white-ball player," Crawley told the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast. "I'm trying to add a few other shots to my game, but I feel like it's quite suited and I've gone well in T20 cricket in the past when I've had a run at it.

"In the last few years, things weren't particularly going so well so I wanted to concentrate on the red ball and stay in that team - it was always my priority for me to play Test cricket.

"That will always be my number one format - it means the most to me - but playing any format for England is a huge honour and playing white-ball cricket is something I really want to do.

"I'm trying to add a bit more power to my game, I'm working hard in the nets trying a few different things to hopefully hit more and bigger sixes."

'Dealing with failure has helped my form massively'

Crawley put his Test match turnaround down to the support of head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes, who stuck with him during his lean patch in 2022.

The 26-year-old opener has averaged 41.60 in his 16 Tests since the 2022 summer, hitting two centuries, including a magnificent 168 at Old Trafford last summer in the drawn Ashes series.

"When I was in bad form in 2022, I found myself reading a lot more [criticism]," Crawley said. "But luckily I've got out of that trend now and I don't read positive or negative.

"It's really what I've been working on this last year, which has helped my form massively, that dealing with failure.

"In India I was trying to get into this headspace where the results were pre-determined - 'I've done all my work', leave it up to fate. That helped massively to realise I'm not in control of the result - just go out and play."

Crawley added: "It always felt like I had an itch to score and I think Baz [Brendon McCullum] and Stokesy [Ben Stokes] saw that in me... They give you that freedom to go out and take it on - it's about how you play rather than how many runs you get."

Despite England losing their last four straight Test matches in India to fall to a 4-1 series defeat, there is no expectation that Stokes will lose his grip on the captaincy any time soon - not that it's an ambition of Crawley's currently anyway.

Asked if he had any aspirations to one day be skipper, Crawley said: "To be honest, I don't.

"If I get asked down the line, then obviously it would be a great honour, but playing under Stokesy, he's the best captain I've ever played under.

"I always try and be a leader in the group in terms of acting in a professional way and being a good team man. You don't have to be captain to be a leader.

"I've always felt like if you want to be captain, then you shouldn't be. The captain should be the man the team wants to be captain."

Zak Crawley departs after making a well made 76(89) in the 1st Test, 1st Innings against West Indies at Lords Today. England leading West Indies now.

I used to be a Zak Crawley detractor but now I'm a huge Zak Crawley fan. He's such a free-flowing and confident player that can impose himself on the game. I think you gotta applaud England and McCullum for seeing something in him and persisting with him despite a mountain of failures. I don't think any other team in the world would have given him this many chances. But credit to him as well, he has turned it around brilliantly and is now starting to thrive by playing his natural game.

70s syndrome. Got out in the 70s three times against India. Now again got out in the 70s.

Will be annoying for him personally, but from England’s perspective if they have a Test opener who gets a rapid half century every 2-3 innings then they’ll be very happy with that.

England's most consistent batter in recent times. He is a brilliant player of pace bowling.

Zak Crawley Test Career:

In First 27 Tests: 1289 runs , 26 Avg, 53 SR, 7 50+ Scores

In Last 18 Tests: 1398 runs, 44 Avg, 81 SR, 12 50+ scores

Baz's big belief has been proved right. Zak Crawley up and running in the Red ball cricket.

England's Zak Crawley focused on match-winning performances: 'My batting average doesn't bother me'

Zak Crawley says he does not care about his batting average and is focused on winning matches for England as his side look to wrap up a series victory over West Indies at Trent Bridge.

England trounced their opponents by an innings and 114 runs in a little over two days of the first Test at Lord's to ensure their all-time record wicket-taker James Anderson retired on a high.

Crawley made 76 for the hosts but has now failed to turn a half-century into a hundred on the previous six occasions he has reached fifty, leaving his average at 33.17 after 45 Tests.

"The average certainly doesn't bother me. I don't get caught up in things like that, otherwise I'll get pretty down on myself a lot of the time," said the opener ahead of the Nottingham Test.

"I'd like to win more games for England. That's kind of what I judge myself on. Hopefully I start getting bigger scores.

"I probably haven't won that many games. I've played some really good knocks but my main goal going forward is how many match-winning performances can I get for my team.

"I've certainly never looked at my average and gone, 'oh, I hope I can get one higher' or things like that. [Opening] is a tough place to bat.

"I'm going to continue to be aggressive. I think we all are. I think that's why we've been backed, especially me, over a period of time

"Maybe at times in India [during a 4-1 series defeat over the winter] we didn't quite read the game as well as we could have and you get punished against a team like India.

"At times you've got to read the game and rein it in, but naturally it's going to be quite aggressive.

"I'm not a huge fan of the term 'ruthless' when I'm batting. I feel like the harder you try, the worse it gets. A lot of those times when you get out is because you're trying too hard to get a score.

"I think you've just got to relax and let it flow and that's when the really big scores come."

'West Indies have players who can take the game away from us'

Crawley also said England would not be taking West Indies lightly in the second Test of the three-match series, despite their resounding victory at Lord's last week.

Kraigg Brathwaite's tourists suffered a 10-wicket defeat to Australia at Adelaide in January before bouncing back to win the second Test in Brisbane and earn a 1-1 draw.

The Kent player added: "We don't take anyone for granted. They've got some really, really good players who are very capable of taking the game away from us.

"We've got to be sharp and perform like we did at Lord's. It was a really good performance and we want to back that up."

On being part of Anderson's farewell, with the 41-year-old retiring from international duty after 188 Tests and a record 704 wickets for a fast bowler in the format, Crawley said: "It was an awesome moment to be in the changing room. I'll always remember that.

"It was just an honour to play with him and to see those celebrations at the end. Everyone was so happy for him that he could go out like that with all the people there."

West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Joshua Da Silva became Anderson's final Test wicket, edging a superb delivery behind to the debuting Jamie Smith, and said: "What a legend he is. I'm happy I don't to have to see him again!

"I tried my hardest not to be one of those wickets but unfortunately I got a good Jimmy seed. It's nice to see the back of him. What he's done in Test cricket is phenomenal."

Injury puts Zak Crawley's Pakistan tour in doubt, potential replacement being considered

Zak Crawley is expected to miss England’s entire Test series against Sri Lanka and may struggle to be fit in time for the tour to Pakistan due to a broken finger that required surgery.

He sustained the injury while dropping a catch during England’s Test victory over the West Indies at Edgbaston last week. Consequently, Crawley was ruled out of The Hundred and is now likely to miss the three Tests against Sri Lanka starting on August 21.

Lawrence has been in excellent form since transferring from Essex to Surrey, boasting an average of 53.09 this season, including a 175-run knock against Worcestershire in June. Additionally, his off-spin bowling, a key reason for his move, has yielded 15 wickets at an average of 36.66 this season.

Lawrence's off-spin might be a crucial asset for England in the three-Test series in Pakistan, starting on October 7.

During England's last tour of Pakistan in 2022, Will Jacks played a significant role with his supplementary off-spin. Crawley faces a tight timeline to recover, as broken fingers typically heal in six to eight weeks.

With the Pakistan series nine weeks away, any delays in his recovery could jeopardize his fitness for the start of the series.

Crawley out of Sri Lanka Tests with broken finger

England opener Zak Crawley has been ruled out of the Test series against Sri Lanka starting this month because of a fractured finger.

The 26-year-old damaged the little finger on his right hand attempting to take a catch at second slip in the victory over West Indies at Edgbaston last week which sealed a 3-0 series clean sweep.

Surrey's Dan Lawrence will open alongside Ben Duckett in Crawley's absence.

Essex's Jordan Cox has been called up to the Test squad for the first time.

The 23-year-old has scored 763 runs, including three centuries, at an average of 69.36 in 12 County Championship matches this season.

He was an unused member of England's white-ball squad on the 2022 tour of Pakistan.

Nottinghamshire fast bowler Olly Stone, who has played three Tests amid several absences through injury, returns to the squad for the first time since June 2021.

He replaces uncapped seam bowler and Notts team-mate Dillon Pennington, who suffered a hamstring injury playing for Northern Superchargers in The Hundred on Friday.

The first Test against Sri Lanka at Emirates Old Trafford starts on 21 August, followed by matches at Lord's and the Kia Oval.

England begin a three-Test tour of Pakistan on 7 October.

Crawley is pushing to be fit for that tour but Pennington is likely to be out for the rest of the season.

Cox is a candidate to be England's reserve wicketkeeper behind Jamie Smith for the tours of Pakistan and New Zealand this winter.

England squad: Ben Stokes (capt), Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Harry Brook, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Dan Lawrence, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Joe Root, Jamie Smith (wk), Olly Stone, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.

Crawley was unable to bat in the second innings at Edgbaston. Opening in his place, captain Ben Stokes hit a 24-ball fifty, England's fastest in Test history.

Lawrence has been the reserve batter in the England squad for more than a year and was in line to replace Duckett for the second Test against West Indies, when the left-hander was on standby to be at the birth of his daughter.

Lawrence played the most recent of his 11 Tests in 2022, before Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum took charge of the England team.

Since the beginning of last summer's Ashes, only England team-mate Joe Root and India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal have scored more Test runs than Crawley.

Zak Crawley makes a quick fifty in reply to Pakistan's mammoth 556 on the board in the 1st Innings of the first Test at Multan. English opener is currently at 53*

England enjoying the benefits of sticking with Crawley through some periods of bad form. Doesn’t matter who the surface or the bowler is now. He just looks like a quality player.

Avg of 40 against Bumrah, Ashwin, Jadeja in India in 10 innings
Avg of 50 plus against Cummins and Co. in 10 innings.

Avg of 45 plus in 20 innings is a large sample size against two top class bowling units.

I would say that he has come a long way.

I didn’t realise his average was in the 30’s because I see the value he brings to the team and he is fortunate to play in the current set-up, my favourite young England batter along with Brooks; it’s like winning the lottery having both talents in the side at the same time when you look at the big holes in the top and middle order over the years, whenever these guys are criticised by the fickle English media they should rewind their memories.

He is a very talented batter but again England will benefit if he does not throw his wicket away as often as he does. He should be a 43-45 average batter at the top for England. He has been doing great over the last 2 years though and has been providing blistering starts for England with Ben Duckett.

Not sure about his career but against Pakistan, he is a beast.

Living example of class privilege in English cricket. If you go to public school and your dad is on the Sunday Times Rich List, you don't need to worry about getting enough chances.
