You are just repeating the same thing. Yes Pakistan doesn't mass manufacture vaccines. Very few countries do. India has those labs because of economies of scale. Setting up such labs can literally happen in any country if that country can provide economies of scale. It just takes a little more time than setting up factories but the end of the day it's mass manufacturing. And that's what Indians are proud of, being a mass manufacturing hub lol.

At the end of the day, its india get orders its indias population that will get vaccinated.

Menawhile we have to wait with our begging bowls for donations.

You might hate the country, but at the end of the day it has the capabilities to prpducse a life saving vaccine. This virus is no joke.

India could start producing a cure for cancer and you will still bash the country.

At this stage, it's more to do with supply chain issues than a reluctance among the public to be vaccinated. There aren't sufficient vaccination centres, and the ones that are operational are only serving people above the age of 60. The bottom line is that the Pakistani government simply hasn't procured sufficient doses.

There is reluctance aswell.

My grand mother isnt bothering because of one of my idiot family members told her that people die from vaccine.

Our awam is jahil

And this is what concerns me - that the supply is there but people are refusing it because of heresay and disinformation. We have people in this thread spouting all kinds of nonsense as an excuse not to vaccinate and this can become troublesome and s-read quickly.

Who cares? This thread is looking at the doses of vaccine administered and what’s shocking from an earlier diagram is how appallingly low Pakistan’s numbers are.

Instead we have the usual point scoring on how one country is bad because of X etc. Btw - to the poster that is attempting to ridicule India’s manufacturing capability - being able to do something on potential and actually doing it and being successful are light years apart. And is one of the reason Pakistan is in dire straights.

On the doses administered in Pakistan, given there is a lot of material on pessimism and reluctance to take up the vaccine amongst BAME communities but especially amongst Pakistanis, could this be part of the reason versus supply chain issues?

https://assets.publishing.service.g...ing-vaccine-uptake-minority-ethnic-groups.pdf - see page 5 for the UK breakdown

EU US UK will not let supplies of vaccine go out of their territory till they have vaccinated and re vaccinated their population. India has already exported 50mn plus doses.

Yet we have a poster who thinks this is nothing.

Pakistan has gotten 0.5M here and there from China. Even if the entire dose is used in one day, total numbers won't look great. It is a supply issue. I am very sure, vaccination numbers will jump drastically as soon as COVI donations are star coming in. I think IN march it's 16M dose and then after few weeks rest to make it total 45M. Pakistan just needs to keep the older population safe till that happens to minimize deaths.

jab1 and 2/3 days later he gets it. obvious i know it more effective after the second jab.

but which vaccination did he get

No vaccination will help within 2-3 days. Which vaccine is not relevant here. It is poor timing and it may spread misinformation about vaccines not working.

Once you vaccinate 3-5% of the population then reluctance to take vaccine disappears due to social proof bias. When people hear and see how XYZ took it, then they feel more comfortable while taking it. Also, a larger population may feel more comfortable taking Astra.

I won't read too much into the reluctance of taking vaccines when supply is so limited.

the vaccination is important, if hes getting the Pfizer one but telling everyone else oohhh the Chinese one good and thats what most will get. yet he got the pfizer vaccine. That means a lot

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar on Saturday dismissed rumours that the country was heading towards a "complete lockdown".

The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) chief was speaking to anchor Shahzad Iqbal on the Geo News programme Naya Pakistan.

The discussion revolved around the rising number of coronavirus cases and the government's response towards it. Rumours of authorities contemplating a "complete lockdown" across the country were discussed.

The NCOC chief shot down the rumours.

"Complete lockdown is not the solution," he said. "We tried to explain that to people during the first wave [of the coronavirus] but they did not understand. You cannot shut down the entire country and steal people's livelihoods," added the minister.

Umar, however, hinted at "targeted interventions", saying that the government tries to take steps that would not affect people's livelihoods.

The minister said the NCOC had identified coronavirus hotspot areas to provincial governments. He said the implementation of these smart lockdowns were not satisfactory.

ISLAMABAD:The government will buy 7 million more doses of two coronavirus vaccines from China as the country gears up for vaccination of people over the age of 50 years from next months.

Planning Minister Asad Umar, who also heads the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) – the synchronised government response to the pandemic – told The Express Tribune that the consignments of the vaccines would start arriving in Pakistan this month.

“Pakistan is in process to procure Sinopharm and CanSino from China. Two batches of the vaccines, including 1 million doses of Sinopharm vaccine, will reach Pakistan by the end of this month,” Umar said, adding that the government has also bought 60,000 doses of CanSino vaccine.

The government started inoculation drive last month with the frontline health workers getting jabs on priority. On March 10, the second phase was launched for people over 60. Umar said that vaccination of the people over the age of 50 will begin in the second week of April.

Pakistan is also endeavouring to procure vaccines from other sources, including the Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) – a global initiative for equitable access to the vaccines led by Unicef, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and others.

Last year, Gavi had announced to provide 17 million doses to Pakistan in March. However, as the pandemic escalated worldwide, Europe’s own production could not meet the requirement of its own population.

As a result, pressure for supplies mounted on Indian manufacturers. This forced India to stop export to the Asian countries. Consequently, the vaccine doses, which were to be received by Pakistan from India has been delayed till June.

Umar said that out of the 7 million doses to be received by April, 4 million would be finished products and ready to use, while 3 million doses would be in unpacked form. He added that a Chinese delegation would visit Pakistan to assist in the packaging of the vaccine.

The 60,000 single-dose CanSino vaccine are also being purchased by Pakistan, according to the minister. It may be recalled that trials of CanSino vaccine were carried out in Pakistan.

The inoculation drive to vaccinate those aged 50 and above against Covid-19 will begin on March 30, National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) chief Asad Umar announced on Friday.

The minister also asked the people to encourage those over 50 to register for the inoculation drive and reminded the masses that the drive is ongoing for those who are 60 years or older.

The country's vaccination drive began with the frontline healthcare workers earlier in February. On March 10, the second phase was launched for people over 60.

The government earlier announced that seven million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine will be bought from China in the coming days.

Amid the alarming surge in coronavirus cases across the country, Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar has called upon Pakistan's political, social leaders, and the media to join hands to fight the coronavirus.

Addressing the media after chairing a meeting of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), the minister said it is time to show the world, as a nation, that Pakistan can limit the spread of the disease before it starts affecting the masses' livelihoods.

We will have to combat the pandemic once again by taking timely steps to save people from unemployment and avoid further restrictions, the NCOC chief stressed.

He also pointed out the major reason behind the rising trend of coronavirus across the county is the new UK variant that has not only affected Pakistan but the entire region.

Warning that callousness towards compliance with coronavirus SOPs can lead us to endangering lives, Umar urged people to take care of themselves and their families and friends by adopting preventive measures.

The NCOC meeting was attended by the chief secretaries of the four provinces.

https://www.dawn.com/news/1615843/medical-superintendent-of-mozang-teaching-hospital-in-lahore-suspended-over-spoiled-vaccine-doses

The medical superintendent (MS) of the Mozang Teaching Hospital in Lahore has been suspended after 350 coronavirus vaccine doses stored there were spoiled, a senior health official told Dawn.com on Thursday.

According to a notification of the Punjab Specialised Healthcare and Medical Education Department dated March 29, the MS, Dr Munir Ahmad Ghouri, was "placed under suspension, under Section 6 of PEEDA Act, 2006, on accounts of inefficiency and misconduct, with immediate effect".

A senior official of the provincial health department said that the medical superintendent was suspended after 350 coronavirus vaccine doses, stored in the refrigerator at his office were spoiled.

"He stored the doses in the refrigerator in his office and then went on leave," the official added.

Meanwhile, Punjab Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid said the MS was suspended for "extreme inefficiency" and an inquiry committee was formed.

"It will be clear in the [committee's] report where the vaccine doses 'disappeared'. Strict action will be taken after the identification of those responsible," she said.

A day earlier, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health Dr Faisal Sultan said that 0.5 million purchased doses of China's Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine had been received with an additional 0.5m doses scheduled to arrive today (Thursday). Pakistan would have possession of one million purchased vaccine doses in total with these two consignments, said SAPM Sultan, adding that millions of doses of purchased Covid-19 vaccine would continue to come in the following weeks and months.

"In the coming months in April, May and June, orders for millions of doses are being finalised and they will keep coming. Then our vaccination process will keep moving forward."

The first batch of vaccines, brought to Pakistan via a Pakistan Air Force aircraft on February 1, had contained 0.5m doses of Sinopharm vaccine gifted by China.

China donated another consignment of 0.5m doses on March 17.

That was also when the first consignment of the privately imported Russian Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine arrived in Karachi. The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan in January 2021 had given a go-ahead to a local pharmaceutical firm, AGP, to import and distribute the Russian-developed Sputnik V.

The one with 51 per cent efficacy?

basedd on research by UAE and Bahrain, there was 80% efficiency.

Only issue the research isnt peer reviewed.

West as its anti china agendas.

Plus, Pakistan has to provide these vaccines as India has failed to provide us under Covax.

If India had not played politics, we would had been recieving the Astera Zeneca Vaccines in march. ABout 4-5 carore i think

Pakistan has no choice but to procure these vaccines from China, the waiting line for all the other vaccines will probably be too long for any doses to be delivered before the end of the year. Unfortunately, the government has no diplomatic clout whatsoever in the West to get priority shipments.

I'm hoping that the Sinopharm vaccine is better than nothing.

Brazil trials said 50 per cent. They are hardly fans of the west.

India played politics? India has given away 60mn doses to other countries. How many has EU US UK given?

With the second wave hitting India, we have had to reduce our exports, still there are doses being exported. Rest countries are not letting anything get out.

Unless the west is fully vaccinated they will not give a dose to anyone. Heck Italy stopped doses to Australia.

Hope this is a reminder to everyone that all laws that the west talks about, human rights, equality etc etc are all till they are ok with it. They moment they are threatened it all goes out of the window.

??? It was never indoas decision. It was covax decision. India got the manufacturing contract.

Yes india played politics as it was suppose to send vaccines when it has started to hogg it and not send it to countries like Pakistan.

For gods sake stop defending such thinfs even with people dieing.

So India manufacturers the vaccine, exports the vaccine to the West, meanwhile Indians are dying due to C19.

Pandering to the West as always; somethings never change.

India created the mess. Really pathetix from them and should had not been given the contract.

People think india is doing us a favor when infact we are grtting vsccines from gavi and covax.

Yes, china one is the only option and while sinopharm is better, cansino is not good.

Its really pathetic from india thay becauee of them many of us wont grt good vaccination. And they cant even argue against it.

Lol. Who feeds you these stories? Covax decided to give SII the contract? Atleast google before you post. Covax is only a customer. They dont have rights over any vaccine anywhere.

Serum institute has the rights to manufacture the vaccine. Its their right who they sell it to. The govt has the right to control the exports.Covax has no say, they are only a customer. Lol. Covax's decision.

India has given 60mn doses to friendly countries, they are still being given out, the covax deliveries have been delayed as India now needs tge vaccines for its own population.

Every country has hogged their vaccine production, India has already given millions of doses and still trying to give out doses. If India is playing politics, what are the rest of the countries doing?

Ask covax to buy it from somewhere else.

When no country is giving any vaccine doses and reserving everything for their own population, India has given millions of doses.

Why cant India argue against it? Is US or UK or EU exporting vaccines?

Guess what, Indian companies also have the license to manufacture Johnsons single shot vaccine. Novavax's vaccine. India is already manufacturing its own vaccine covaxin and also has the license to manufacture the russian vaccine.

So no, Covax didnt decide what is manufactured in India. They are only a customer.

 this guy thinks india owns a vaccine which has a patent.

Keeps on confusing themselves.

Heard of license manufacturing? Suna hai?

The company that owns the license owns the amount of the product it manufactures and is free to sell it. Aztrazeneca has a licensing agreement with SII.

Since Indian companies own the license they are owner of the vaccines they produce and can do whatever they want with it.

Haan yeh wohi ha “3 gunna Laggan dena parray ga”.

In their whole history, Indians have always been ‘contract manufacturing’ for others.

The licensor is alwyas the owner.

Again, you can try as hard as you want but india is a supplier. No they do not have such exclusive rights that they can do anything they want. They are not the owner of the vaccine and cant do anything they want.

This is a patented drug for gods sake

Pakistan to develop its own coronavirus vaccine, NA told

Parliamentary secretary says country to make its own Covid vaccine

The National Assembly was informed on Thursday that the government was procuring raw materials to combat the coronavirus pandemic in sufficient quantity and it was expected that Pakistan would develop its own vaccine against the virus.

The house, which met here with Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri in the chair, deferred the formation of a parliamentary committee on electoral reforms until the opposition parties were consulted on the matter.

During the session, Shunila Ruth, a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker on a minorities’ seat, asked the chair to declare holiday on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The chair said that there should be holidays on religious days for minorities.

During the Question Hour, Parliamentary Secretary for Health Dr Noshin Hamid said that 70 million people would be vaccinated against the coronavirus during the ongoing inoculation drive to create “herd immunity” against the virus.

Similarly, she said, raw materials relating to combatting the Covid-19 pandemic were being procured in large quantities, which would help make the coronavirus vaccine. “We will soon make our own coronavirus vaccine,” she told the lawmakers.

The National Assembly was also informed that Prime Minister Imran Khan had withdrawn the notifications aimed at curtailing the powers of additional secretaries of 15 departments posted at the South Punjab Secretariat.

The issue was raised in the lower house of parliament by a treasury member from Multan, Ahmed Hussain Dehar. He pointed out that the South Punjab Secretariat was established by the ruling PTI but the powers of the officers posted there had been curtailed.

MNA Malik Amir Dogar told the house that additional secretaries of 15 provincial departments had been posted in Multan but they did not want to be subordinates to those sitting in Lahore. “It’s a conspiracy that South Punjab Secretariat does not have fully empowered additional secretaries.”

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan said that the controversial notifications had been withdrawn. “The prime minister himself took notice of the issue,” he said, adding that the notifications were issued to fully empower additional secretaries for South Punjab.

The state minister also moved a motion, calling for the establishment of a joint parliamentary committee on electoral reforms. The opposition members objected to the motion, saying that they should be consulted before the formation of such a committee.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) lawmaker Shazia Marri said that the party was ready for electoral reforms but there should not be any reforms in which 20 presiding officers disappear in the fog – a reference to the NA-75 by-polls conducted in February.

MNA Khurram Dastgir Khan of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) said that the parliamentary committee should not be formed unless the opposition was consulted on the matter. The deputy speaker then postponed the formation of the committee.

Energy Minister Omar Ayub informed the house that an appellate body was being formed in the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra). “The provinces will be represented in the appellate body … The matter is under consideration of the Council of Common Interests (CCI).”

Later, PML-N lawmaker Ali Gohar presented a private member’s bill. But when PPP’s Mehreen Razzaq Bhutto stood up to table her private member’s bill, Gohar pointed out a lack of quorum. Mehreen expressed her anguish at the move by fellow opposition lawmaker.

The parliamentary affairs state minister told the two lawmakers to avoid “bringing the PDM [Pakistan Democratic Movement] infighting in parliament”, stressing that the government was supporting opposition’s “good bills” therefore, quorum should not be pointed out.

No. The licensee is the owner of the amount it produces and it can sell it to anyone. This is not contract manufacturing that the manufacturer is just producing the goods on behalf of someone else and the original owner is someone else.

Who said India has exclusive rights? Aztrazeneca is free to license the vaccine to other producers. But the licensee is within rights to sell his produce to anyone.

There is a difference between a licensee and contract manufacturer.

There is a patent thats why they are licensees.

SII has rights to produce and sell the vaccines.

The amount of brain capacity some of you are showing not even knowing what a licensee is, is astonishing.

Btw India does have its own vaccine, invented in India and made in India.

https://www.dawn.com/news/1615873/private-firm-allowed-to-sell-covid-vaccine-temporarily

While temporarily allowing a private firm to sell Covid-19 vaccine, the Sindh High Court on Thursday observed that any restriction on the sale of Covid-19 vaccine at this stage would be against public interest since it was an urgent need due to the crisis being currently faced by the country.

The single-judge bench headed by Justice Nadeem Akhtar also extended its earlier interim stay order against withdrawal of exemption notification issued by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap) about Covid-19 vaccines’ import by a private firm till April 12.

The bench ruled that it would decide the question whether the exemption granted for Covid-19 vaccine import could be rescinded or not on April 12.

A pharmaceutical company filed a suit before the SHC and contended that the Drap had withdrawn its earlier notification issued on Feb 2, under which it exempted the import of Covid-19 vaccine for sale for a period of six months or till the market prices of those vaccines become available.

It was further argued that therefore the firm entered into a vaccine supply agreement with a foreign seller/exporter for the import of one million doses of Covid-19 vaccine (Sputnik-V) and the consignment had already arrived at Karachi Port, but the impugned notification was withdrawn by Drap. When the bench took up an application of the firm seeking contempt proceedings against the authorities concerned for not releasing the vaccine from the port on Thursday, the alleged contemnor, a federal drug inspector Sindh, turned up and filed an explanation.

He contended that he was not the competent authority to release the consignment in question and thus such delay, if any, cannot be attributed to him.

However, the bench dismissed the contempt application after the lawyer for plaintiff firm said that the consignment had already been released and he did not want to press the application.

The counsel for the federal authorities, who were impleaded as defendants in the suit, informed the bench about the order of a two-judge bench issued on March 31 in the present matter and requested for time to place on record the price of Covid-19 vaccine to be fixed by the federal government on next hearing.

The lawyers for the federal authorities also sought a restraining order for the plaintiff firm not to sell the subject vaccine as the price had not been fixed yet.

However, the lawyer for the firm vehemently opposed it on the ground that the impugned notification of March 18 to withdraw the exemption was illegal.

The bench observed that the question whether the exemption granted to the Covid-19 vaccine could be rescinded or not will be decided when the main suit is to be taken up for hearing (on April 12).

“It may be observed that if the court comes to the conclusion that the subject vaccine ought to have been sold by the plaintiff at the price determined by the federal government, the excess amount, if any, received by the plaintiff can be recovered from the plaintiff as all the relevant details, such as, the number of ampules imported and sold by the plaintiff and price thereof can easily be sought from the plaintiff. Learned counsel for the plaintiff states that the plaintiff shall voluntarily place all such information before this court”, it added.

“In view of the above, I am of the considered view that any restriction relating to the sale of the Covid-19 vaccine at this stage would be against the public interest because of its undisputed urgent need due to crisis being currently faced by the country,” the bench in its order concluded.

Young Pakistanis rush to purchase Russian vaccine as private sales open

KARACHI, Pakistan (Reuters) – Thousands of Pakistanis rushed to get inoculated in the first round of commercial sales of COVID-19 vaccines that began over the weekend, with vaccination sites in the southern city of Karachi saying on Sunday they had already sold out.

Pakistan is currently offering free vaccines to frontline healthcare workers and people over the age of 50, but the drive has thus far been slow, and last month the country allowed commercial imports by the private sector for the general public.

The first round saw the commercial sale of the two-shot Russian Sputnik V to the general public for about 12,000 Pakistani rupees ($80) for a pack of two doses.

Despite the cost, a number of centres offering the shot reported long queues, with some in Karachi waiting in line for close to three hours. Most in the queue were young Pakistanis still not eligible for government’s free vaccination.

“I am very happy to get it, since now it is required for travelling,” Saad Ahmed, 34, told Reuters on Sunday after he got his shot at an upscale private sector hospital in Karachi.

While the private sale of vaccines has begun, the government and importers are still locked in a pricing dispute.

Pakistan initially agreed to exempt imported vaccines from price caps, but later rescinded the exemption and said it would set maximum prices.

One pharmaceutical company, which had already imported 50,000 doses of Sputnik V, took the government to court, where it won an interim order allowing it to sell it until pricing is decided.

As soon as vaccination was opened for walk-in customers, there were long lines of people, Dr Nashwa Ahmed, who runs vaccination at Karachi’s South City Hospital, told Reuters.

Pictures of queues outside the hospital late into the night were shared on social media.

The hospital procured 5,000 doses of Sputnik V and in just over two days all its stock had been administered or pre-booked, said a hospital official who asked not to be identified.

Companies, including one of Pakistan’s largest banks, have also purchased large quantities to have staff inoculated, the official said.

The private sales start as the country deals with a fresh wave of COVID-19 infections and healthcare facilities are fast filling to capacity.

The number of patients now in critical care has reached 3,568, the highest since the pandemic started, a cabinet minister, Asad Umar, said on Twitter. Pakistan has thus far reported 687,908 infections and 14,778 deaths.

Pakistan has administered coronavirus vaccines to more than 1 million people so far, Federal Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar confirmed on Twitter Tuesday.

"More than 76,000 vaccinations were carried out yesterday. Total number of people registered so far is now over two million. 600,000 health care workers and more than 1.4 million 50 plus. Please register if you are 50 plus," Umar said in his tweet.

In another tweet, he said that increased restrictions, broader lockdowns and stronger enforcement of standard operating procedures (SOPs) are starting to have an effect.

"Initial signs of positivity slowing. However, due to momentum of last two weeks patients on critical care & mortality will stay at high levels for some time. Please follow SOPs & be safe," he said.

Pakistan reported 3,953 coronavirus cases on April 5 with a positivity ratio of 8.4%, according to the latest stats provided by the National Command and Operation Centre.

Amid a third wave of the pandemic, the country has reported 696,184 COVID-19 cases so far since the beginning of the pandemic last year. The number of active cases stands at 63,102 with the nationwide recoveries rising to 618,158.

The coronavirus situation has deteriorated further in Pakistan leading to more restrictions from the NCOC in order to curb the virus.

Govt to open covid vaccine registration for all citizens post eid asad umar

Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar has said that the government plans to open registration for Covid-19 vaccination for all citizens after Eid.

He said this while speaking to select senior journalists on Thursday.

The announcement comes a day after over 100 deaths were reported for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, taking the overall tally to 15,000 mortalities.

Umar termed the next five to six weeks "critical" for the ongoing third wave of the virus in Pakistan.

He said so far 14,000 people had received vaccination through the private sector, while 1.1 million were inoculated as part of the government campaign.

The minister said China was Pakistan's "primary source" for vaccination for now, adding that the Cansino Covid-19 vaccine will also be available in the country after Eid.

"We will be able to vaccinate more than 125,000 people per day after Eid," Umar told media representatives.

He noted with concern that the current number of critical care patients in the country was higher than during the first coronavirus wave.

"Strict enforcement of SOPs (standard operating procedures) can bring down the rising rate of infection," he stressed.

Pakistan reported 5,329 coronavirus cases and 98 deaths during the last 24 hours. This is the highest number of daily Covid-19 infections so far this year as well as the highest since June 16, 2020, when 5,090 cases were reported.

The current positivity rate is 10.7 per cent.

Among the four provinces, Punjab recorded the highest number of daily infections at 2,990, along with 62 deaths. It was followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa which registered 1,018 cases and 23 deaths.

Earlier this week, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) said it has decided to administer Covid-19 vaccines to citizens aged 80 years and above in their homes.

Meanwhile, a study conducted by American newswire Bloomberg showed that it would take a decade for Pakistan to inoculate 75pc of its population despite the fact that over one million people have already been vaccinated against the virus.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Monday said that Pakistan will receive 15 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine under COVAX — a platform to ensure coronavirus shots reach those in greatest need — by May 2021.

Qureshi, who is on a two-day official visit to Germany, announced the development following his meeting with Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.

COVAX is led by the World Health Organisation (WHO), and has promised to deliver two billion doses of safe and effective vaccines to at least 172 countries by the end of 2021.

"Following my meeting with Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, I am happy to announce that Pakistan will receive 15 million doses of the #COVID vaccine under COVAX, with a commitment for these to be delivered by May," FM Qureshi wrote on his official Twitter handle.

The inoculation drive to vaccinate people in the age group of 50-59 will begin from next week, Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar announced on Saturday.

“NCOC in today’s meeting decided to start vaccination of people aged from 50 to 59 from Wednesday (April 21), encouraging once again everyone to register themselves for the vaccination,” he wrote on his official Twitter handle.

The country's vaccination drive began with the frontline healthcare workers earlier in February. On March 10, the second phase was launched for people over 60.

Last week, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that Pakistan will receive 15 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine under COVAX — a platform to ensure coronavirus shots reach those in greatest need — by May 2021.

COVAX is led by the World Health Organisation (WHO), and has promised to deliver two billion doses of safe and effective vaccines to at least 172 countries by the end of 2021.

As many as 1.3 million people have been vaccinated across the country for the Covid-19 pandemic thus far.

The government is negotiating with multilateral institutions to secure a $335 million loan for the procurement of Covid-19 vaccines but the money cannot be spent on buying Chinese-origin vaccines.

The government has approached the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank for getting loans to procure the vaccines, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs officials.

The ADB has been requested to provide $200 million loan out of $500 million that it indicated to give to Pakistan for vaccine procurement.

Pakistan has also negotiated a $135 million loan that the Washington-based lender would divert from the $200 million troubled project.

In November last year, the WB had paused implementation of the $200 million coronavirus contagion mitigation project due to failure of the federal and provincial governments to put in place effective mechanisms for strengthening health systems.

In order to fill the capacity gaps, the project had been undertaken to procure equipment and consumables for 200 hospitals, including 44 tertiary-level hospitals, for effective clinical management of the confirmed cases.

However, the WB and the ADB loans cannot be used to procure the Chinese-origin vaccines, which are so far available to Pakistan, according to sources.

Sources say that the Chinese vaccines do not meet the financial eligibility criteria set by the ADB and the WB.

There are three broad criteria: the vaccines must be selected through the Gavi-funded Covax programme, approved by the World Health Organization and authorized by the European regulatory authorities.

The three Chinese origin vaccines, Sinovac, Sinopharm and CanSino are not eligible for WB and the ADB funding. The Sinovac has begun discussions to join the Covax but no timeline is yet given.

Asad Umar, the chairman of the Vaccine Procurement Committee and federal minister for planning, said that Pakistan has taken up the issue of exclusion of the Chinese-origin vaccines from the financing criteria with the WHO.

The minister said that not financing but the availability of vaccines was a matter of concern for Pakistan.

He said the federal cabinet has already approved $150 million for vaccine procurement and out of that $90 million will be provided by the Islamic Development Bank.

The government has already given orders for procurement of six million vaccines, which will arrive till May, Umar said. He noted that the country has already received one million doses while another two million doses will arrive next week.

The suppliers have indicated providing two million more doses that will arrive by June and sufficient funds are available for these procurements, Umar said.

The government wanted to vaccinate 70% of its eligible population or 69.6 million people. As per the health ministry, only 99.5 million of the population is eligible for the Covid-19 vaccination.

Out of 69.6 million, about 56 million would be vaccinated by taking grant from Gavi and China and a loan from the World Bank.

The vaccination drive has remained very slow and so far about 1.3 million people have been given jabs, including those who purchased vaccines from the private suppliers.

The World Bank and ADB have offered loans to low and middle income countries to procure vaccines.

Kamran Baloch, Pakistan’s Executive Director in the WB said that the WB-funded PREP was currently undergoing a restructuring to help the government purchase and deploy safe and effective Covid-19 vaccines that meet the World Bank’s Vaccine Approval Criteria.

He said that the WB financing will help vaccinate 4.5% of the country’s population (estimated 10.5 million people), while other bilateral and multilateral partners and the Covax Advance Market Commitment facility will support the government cover 25.2% of the population by the end of 2021 calendar year.

Pakistan was also one of the first countries to have availed the G20 Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI). The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund urged G20 countries to establish the DSSI to help countries concentrate their resources on fighting the pandemic and safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of millions of the most vulnerable people.

The first phase of the DSSI and its extension to end 2021 has provided Pakistan temporary fiscal space of approximately $3.5 billion, which enabled the government to increase spending on safety nets.

https://tribune.com.pk/story/2295738/punjab-borrows-25k-covid-19-jabs-from-balochistan

The Punjab government has borrowed 25,000 doses of the coronavirus vaccine from Balochistan due to a spike in the number of positive cases in the province.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) directed the Balochistan government to dispatch the Covid-19 doses to Punjab on Monday to support the vaccination efforts.

The development was confirmed by the Balochistan Coordinator of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation, Dr Ishaq Panezai.

The province of Punjab witnessed a sudden rise in the number of positive Covid cases in the first week of April, prompting the provincial government to request more inoculation doses from the NCOC. Unfortunately, the NCOC was unable to provide the coronavirus doses immediately. The Punjab government has assured that they will return the 25,000 vaccine doses borrowed from Balochistan within 25 days. “The Punjab government has borrowed the vaccine doses for 25 days. They will return them by April 25,” Panezai said.

An official privy to the matter said that the inoculation process in the largest province of the country will be affected due to the Balochistan government’s decision to lend vaccine doses to Punjab.

Approximately, a total of 46 vaccination centers have been set up in Balochistan, 13 of which are in Quetta. Vaccinations are being carried out on a daily basis at these centres.

Dr Panezai further said that the vaccination process is in full flow and 450 prisoners above the age of 60 are set to be inoculated against Covid-19. “We have vaccinated around 35 prisoners so far,” he said, adding that the Balochistan health department received 75,000 coronavirus vaccine doses that have been used to inoculate 30,000 people in the province up till now.

Medical Superintendent of Civil Hospital Quetta Dr Arbab Kamran has said that 17 vaccination counters were set up for men and women both apart from four counters that are only for females. “Only persons above the age of 60 are being inoculated currently.”

Balochistan Coronavirus Cell Head Dr Naqeebullah Niazi announced that the vaccination process for people above the age of 50-years-old will begin from April 21.

LAHORE: Special persons of 60 years or above will be vaccinated against coronavirus at home in Punjab, says Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid.

Dr Rashid issued a statement on Thursday saying that elderly citizens, disabled person or people who are unable to move can get information from 1033 for home services.

A doctor and vaccinator had been deputed in one ambulance for home vaccination services, she said.

The Punjab primary and secondary healthcare department secretary has been asked to make arrangements.

Disabled persons or those unable to move who are over 65 years old are already being provided these services in Punjab.

Around 27,000 elderly people are being vaccinated on a daily basis on an average, the Punjab health minister said.

The vaccine isn't going to improve the Covid situation in Pakistan. How will you get the masses to come get the vaccine shots when more than half the population is illiterate and don't even consider it as a threat.

I travel every day and rarely ever see someone wearing a mask outside.
Yahan logon ko itni sense nahi hay k masks pehen lain, vaccine shot lagwaana tou duur ki baat hay.

KARACHI: Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry claimed on Saturday Pakistan's coronavirus vaccination plan was better than the one being implemented in Europe, but did not explain what sets it apart in his view.

The information minister, addressing a press conference in the port city, also claimed the country would inoculate its citizenry within a year.

"We are trying to bring down the impact of this (third) wave this week," he said, adding that due to an increase in the number of patients at hospitals, the current consumption of oxygen stands at 90% of capacity.

He cautioned that the government might consider a complete lockdown if the situation does not get better in a week

The minister noted that coronavirus-related deaths were increasing at an alarming rate and so the government had decided to call in the army for implementation of SOPs.

Chaudhry said the coronavirus positivity ratio had shot up to a worrying 40% in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as he urged the people to follow safety measures to keep the virus at bay.

"I am happy that Maryam Nawaz has decided to cancel her visit to Karachi," the minister said as he spoke about the upcoming NA-249 by-election and the PML-N leader's decision to cancel her visit in light of the coronavirus situation.

He called on the Election Commission of Pakistan to come up with election SOPs, saying that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's election campaign was one of the main reasons behind the spread of COVID-19 in India.

The information minister also noted that the coronavirus situation in India was worsening and noted that Prime Minister Imran Khan and Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi had sent their good wishes for the people of the neighbouring country.

"I pray that the Indian people get relief from this problem soon," he added.

No idea which two they mixed as i am not in Pakistan at the moment. They mentioned that my mom would not require a 2nd dose. She got it done in Lahore.

There is no mixing of doses or of vaccines.

She would have gotten the cansino one which is a single dose viral vector vaccine (same as J&J). Hence she doesn't need a second one. I wouldn't worry at all.

There is no mixing of doses or of vaccines.

I think you've answered what he meant by mixing.

But on the point, there have been cases in India where they've actually done this mixing of the two available vaccines between the 1st and 2nd dose. And when people checked believing it to be a mistake, it was confirmed to be authorized trials. Guess the principle of the two vaccines is the same, so they felt it's not russian roulette :)

oh, if your mom got a single dose and was told she doesnt need a second that means she got Cansino.

Would have recommended that she should had not got that and should ahd opt for sinovac or sinopharm.

Anyways, my reluctancy with Cansino is that its not that effecctive as of yet and they are still testing it. Trial 3 is going on and researches do say that a seocnd dose might be required after 5-6 months.

Another trial might start where the sputnik is consumed as first dose and Cansino is consumed as second.

Anyways, do not worry, no vaccine was mixed. Its still better than not having a vaccine. But do keep on researching on it, as if there is a requirement for second dosage or anything that do let her know.

I guess the health staff themselves doesn't know what they are doing and just giving wrong information to people coming for vaccination. As you and above posters mention it must be casino. Thank you for the clarification :)

https://www.dawn.com/news/1620859/21-million-covid-19-vaccine-doses-administered-asad-umar

Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar said on Wednesday that a total of 2.1 million Covid-19 vaccine doses had been administered in Pakistan — over 100,000 of which were administered on Tuesday (yesterday) alone.

The federal minister posted on Twitter that "daily vaccinations crossed 100,000 in a day for the first time yesterday.

"Total vaccinations yesterday were 117,852. Total vaccinations so far [are] now 2.1m."

"Good to see more people registering," he said, and further encouraged people above 40 years of age to register themselves for vaccination if they hadn't done so already.

The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) had decided on Monday to open registration of around 12m people in the age group of 40 to 50 years and allow walk-in vaccination facility for citizens over 50 years of age. Umar had said that people who were 40 years and above could get themselves registered for vaccination from Tuesday.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan also said that more than 117,000 vaccine doses had been administered in one day on April 27.

He also provided a snapshot of received and expected arrivals of Covid-19 vaccines in Pakistan and said that 78 per cent of the total number of vaccines up till June had been purchased by the government.Umar had previously said in April that 1.3m Pakistanis had been vaccinated at government facilities.

"I want to tell you that more than 0.8m vaccine doses have been administered in Pakistan and we want to take this campaign further and speed it up," Dr Sultan had given an update on the vaccination drive on March 31.

Pakistan kicked off its vaccination drive in early February with Professor Rana Imran Sikander becoming the first doctor to be vaccinated against the disease at the Prime Minister Office in the presence of Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The prime minister had said at the occasion, "I congratulate my team which has worked prom*ptly and vaccine was imp*orted. We are also thankful to China which has provided vaccine."

Sindh government spokesperson Murtaza Wahab while addressing a press conference in Karachi also termed Tuesday's daily vaccinations achieved as a 'good development' and a 'good thing'.

He said he was "very happy" to see the federal minister's tweet and addressing the federal government, said that the figure had been achieved due to "removing restrictions" on the age groups which could be vaccinated.

"We said again and again as a government and as citizens that age restrictions should be finished and you should provide vaccine to whoever wants to vaccinate themselves."

He questioned why were other citizens who wanted to be vaccinated were being "deprived" despite vaccine availability.

"I will want to appreciate a good development that 117,000 Pakistanis were vaccinated and will want to request the federal government to remove the age restriction," he said, calling for people above 18 years of age to be granted the permission to achieve vaccinations.

"The numbers we achieved today, we can take them to 150,000, 200,000 and 250,000. The more the people come to us, the more we will be able to vaccinate them."

Wahab also called upon the government to sort out supply issues for the Covid-19 vaccine and ensure its availability in the markets and government hospitals. He appreciated that a special flight of PIA had been sent to China to bring back vaccines and said there was further need for the federal government to send more similar flights.

He also stressed upon the importance of following standard operating procedures (SOP) to prevent further spread of the disease and said that "collective thinking" and "synergy" were needed to ensure that the maximum number of the population could be vaccinated.

Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar while addressing a press conference in Lahore said that so far 1m people had been vaccinated in Punjab, adding that the government had increased the number of vaccination centres in the province.

He said that the Punjab government has allocated Rs1.5 billion for the purchase of Covid-19 vaccines and "these are difficult circumstances but we are committed to tackling this national challenge."

The chief minister urged people to follow SOPs for their own as well as their family's protection. "Support the government in these unusual circumstances so your lives can be protected."

"Winning the war against Covid-19 is the only option. Every segment of society will have to fully play their role in dealing with the coronavirus."

CM Buzdar said that his government had also decided to impose more stringent restrictions in cities where the positivity rate was higher than 8pc. He added that the government would also ensure the continuous provision of oxygen supply and legal action will be initiated against hoarders and profiteers of oxygen cylinders.

100,000 vaccinations in one day is good start, what should be pakistan target per day?

At 100k it will take 8 years to innoculate everyone. I do believe this is with 2 doses per person. Pakistan will be manufacturing the CanSino vaccine in may which is 1 dose, and if that's the primary vaccine that Pakistan uses then we are down to 4 years basically. So I would say they need to be around 400-500k per day to innoculate everyone in 1 - 1.5 years.

100,000 vaccinations in one day is good start, what should be pakistan target per day?

1 million per day. It's getting better so that's good news. Otherwise there waves will keep popping up now and again, as it will take too long.

40-50 percent of the population needs to be vaccinated for a considerable effect to show up in the data.

It's baffling though that walk in vaccinations are open for people 50+ yet only 2.1m doses have been given. This would suggest the word is not getting out. They need to do a vaccination campaign like polio to reach rural areas and villages.

I have lost 4 Uncles in distant relations, and in Feb/March all of the people were going around there merry business as usual, like meeting friends, going out for Chaat/Chai/Gupshup together.

This same story has repeated everywhere, as culture in India, which I am pretty sure is same in Pakistan is to meet your social circle and large gathering, especially among our older generation.

I literally had to scold my mother to get vaccinated in Hoshiarpur over phone, as some stupid neighbours told her that vaccines are dangerous and she got scared.

Please, get vaccinated, fast to avoid the disaster.

A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) special plane arrived in Islamabad from Beijing carrying doses of the coronavirus vaccine.

According to sources, PK6852 landed at the Islamabad airport from Beijing carrying over 300,000 coronavirus vaccines.

Sources said that around one million vaccines are being brought to Pakistan by three Boeing 777 planes.

The second flight of the national airline will arrive in Pakistan at 12 noon and the third at midnight.

"Three more PIA 777s arrived in #Beijing - #China to carry another large consignment of #COVID19 vaccines as part of a larger initiative to combat the pandemic," the national airlines said on Twitter.

"On the behest of the Government of Pakistan, we would continue to serve this great nation at the time of crisis," it added.

The spokesperson of the national flag carrier, Abdullah Hafeez Khan, had said a day earlier that three Boeing 777 planes had been sent to China for procurement of coronavirus vaccines.

ISLAMABAD: Vaccinations of people aged between 40 to 49 years will start from May 3, announced National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) chief Asad Umar in a tweet on Thursday.

He also stated that the country recorded over 100,000 vaccinations for a second successive day, adding that it was encouraging to see the pace of vaccine registration also picking up.

A day ago, the NCOC chief had said that Pakistan crossed the 100,000 Covid-19 vaccination mark in a single day, in a first since the inoculation drive began in the country.

The single-day vaccination tally had yesterday taken the total number of country's vaccinations to over 2.1 million.

Restrictions

In order to tackle the third wave of the pandemic hitting Pakistan with full force, the federal government announced a new set of restrictions, including a blanket ban on tourism and inter-provincial transport, in an attempt to contain a further rise in the mounting coronavirus cases during the upcoming Eidul Fitr holidays.

According to the Ministry of Interior, fresh restrictions also included the closure of all tourist resorts, hotels, restaurants, shopping centres, parks, beaches and other public places from May 8 to 16.

There will be a complete ban on inter-provincial and inter-city transport during Eid holidays, except for the residents of Gilgit-Baltistan, who will be allowed to travel to their hometowns.

When will they actually arrive. Are they available yet for use.

Based on our government's behaviour, it seems like all these people like to put out these headlines but aren't ready to actually follow through. Here in India there was a big announcement to roll out vaccinations for everyone 18+. Practically though it's not available and estimates are end of May to even start the process. Even for the 45+, you can book a 2nd dose but when you turn up at the hospital, they haven't received their daily quota of vaccines.

Had to run around a couple of days to get my parents their 2nd dose and eventually managed when our local club managed to source them. They opened it out to non-members but it's still something exclusive for the privileged who're privy to such information or facilities.

Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar said on Friday that Pakistan has so far managed to cope with the increase in critical care Covid-19 patients by proactively building the capacity of the entire system.

In a series of tweets, the federal minister said that the total number of critical care patients who were being provided oxygen had reached 5,360 on Thursday.

"This is a 57 per cent more than the peak in June 2020," he said, adding that so far this increase had been handled due to "proactively building capacity of the entire system from oxygen production to beds".

"Total oxygen production operational capacity in Pakistan last year was 487 tonnes per day. It has been increased to 798 tonnes," said Umar, adding that actual production had increased from 465 tonnes last June to 725 tonnes currently.

"We also imported 19,200 oxygen cylinders last year to ensure distribution."

He stated that because of the steps taken by the federal and provincial governments the tight oxygen supply situation seen last June was not being witnessed again, despite an increase of more than 2,000 critical patients requiring oxygen compared to the previous peak in June.

"Continuing to build [oxygen] capacity, in yesterday's National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) [session] it was decided to import 6,000 tonnes of oxygen, 5,000 cylinders and 20 cryogenic tanks."

The federal minister stated that this "proactive decision-making" had helped Pakistan avoid the kind of situation being witnessed in other countries.

"[The] bedrock of this proactive decision-making has been a data-based forward-looking analytical approach, [a] nationally coordinated effort with a whole of the nation approach and [the] hard work of dedicated teams who have continued to steer the effort through this difficult challenge."

However, he cautioned that the "challenge is not over and is in fact is continuing to increase".

He added that the need for following precautions and Covid-19 standard operating procedures was "vital at this point in time" and the next few weeks were "critical".

"No system can cope if we allow the disease to spread rapidly."

On Thursday, the NCOC had also decided to shut down the scrap industry of Misri Shah so that oxygen could be diverted to the healthcare sector instead.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan had said on Tuesday that a special NCOC committee was monitoring the oxygen situation in the country and trying to improve it. Asking the public to "trust" decisions taken by the NCOC, he had said the forum was working to increase the capacity of hospitals.

"Existing oxygen plants are being monitored and we are looking at additional plants. The [Pakistan] Steel Mills plant was also talked about so it is being looked at. We have also diverted [oxygen supply] from non-essential industries."

Minister for Energy Hammad Azhar had also said the government was "exploring all options" to arrange additional supplies of oxygen for the country. Azhar had said in a tweet that the ministry of industries had started working with private oxygen manufacturers to enhance production capacity after the pandemic's first wave last year.

What's the update on availability of Pfizer in Pakistan?

By June. We are getting 100,000 doses of Pfizer. This is under the WHO led COVAX program.

We were supposed to get AZ too in may, but the situation in India is dire and they are one of the main contributors of the AZ vaccine to the program, so it remains to be seen what happens. They for sure need it more at the moment.

Pakistan has received a total of 4.06 million doses of vaccines for the novel coronavirus, according to figures reported. Out of this reported number, 3.5 million doses are of the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine.

Other vaccines received include 60,000 doses of CanSino and 500,000 Sinovac vaccines - both also purchased from China.

Of the total vaccines, 529,928 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine have been utilised so far. For healthcare workers, 134,218 first doses have been administered and 88,475 of the second dose have been administered so far.
