Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination Dr Faisal Sultan said on Monday that Pakistan expected to receive 19 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines by the first half of the ongoing year.

"We expect to receive 19 million doses of Covid vaccines by the first half of the current year," Dr Sultan said while addressing a press conference at the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) this afternoon.

The SAPM stated that the government has signed agreements to receive 30 million doses of the vaccines, adding that the process will continue in phases.

Vaccination targets

"90 per cent of the vaccines are to be bought," he said, dispelling the impression that the government was solely relying on donations to receive the jabs.

He further stated that about 100 million of the population was eligible to receive the jabs, excluding those below the age of 18 years.

"We will make modifications if there are any scientific changes [internationally regarding the age factor]."

Dr Faisal added that, "We plan to vaccinate 70 million people across the country by year end."

"The efforts to acquire vaccinations are ongoing but the biggest defence against Covid is adherence to the SOPs."

Referring to the global shortage of vaccines, the SAPM said that Pakistan is still succeeding in acquiring the vaccines and vaccinating its population.

Local production

Dr Faisal stated that Pakistan is set to start the local filling of the CanSino vaccines. "According to the agreement, we will carry out local filling of three million doses in the country every month."

"The move will help lessen the country's reliance on other countries for vaccine procurement," he said.

The SAPM lauded China's cooperation in enabling Pakistan to carryout the filling process locally.

He termed comparisons with other countries, such as Bhutan, unfair, saying any comparisons should be drawn on the basis of the population of a country and its vaccination initiatives.

Pakistan does not have “any visibility” of 15 million coronavirus vaccine doses that Germany promised to provide by May, Dr Faisal Sultan, adviser to the prime minister on health affairs said on Tuesday.

“We don’t have any visibility of this delivery at this point,” Dr Faisal told Anadolu Agency in a brief message.

Germany agreed to provide the jabs to Islamabad during Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s visit last month.

The 15 million doses were to be delivered by May under the COVAX facility, an initiative backed by the World Health Organization that aims to ensure equitable provision of COVID-19 vaccines, Qureshi said on Twitter after meeting his counterpart Heiko Maas in Berlin on April 13.

Battling a third wave of the virus, Pakistan is currently vaccinating frontline healthcare workers and citizens aged 40 and above with China’s Sinopharm and CanSino jabs. Private hospitals in major cities are also using Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine that has been imported by a local pharmaceutical company.

Islamabad has also approved emergency use of UK’s AstraZeneca and China’s CoronaVac vaccines, but both are yet to be used in the country.

Pakistan is aiming to ramp up its immunisation campaign in the summer and expects to receive 13.2 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines by the end of June.

According to Sultan, who effectively acts as the health minister, the South Asian country has so far placed orders for 30 million doses with different companies.

Pakistan reported 3,377 new infections and 161 more fatalities, the second highest daily count since last March, on Tuesday, raising its overall tally to 837,523, including 18,310 deaths.

In a positive sign, the number of registrations for the coronavirus vaccine have been increasing significantly as over 200,000 people got vaccinated against the virus on Tuesday, said Federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar.

Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, the federal minister noted that the number of registrants of the coronavirus vaccines in the country has exceeded the five million mark.

He also urged people who are 40 or above to get themselves vaccinated against the coronavirus, adding that people should continue observing coronavirus safety protocols.

Pakistan is currently vaccinating people who are 40 plus and healthcare workers with Chinese vaccines.

A digital portal has been launched by the federal government for the registration through which a code is assigned to the person and then they can go to a designated vaccination centre to get the jab.

The minister had previously announced that over 150,000 people were vaccinated across Pakistan on May 3.

Pakistan to receive first batch of free AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine May 8

First consignment of AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine arriving on May 8.
COVAX vaccine supply situation likely to improve significantly in second half of 2021, says federal govt official.
Pakistan was supposed to get the first tranche of AstraZeneca’s coronavirus vaccine via COVAX in March, but it was delayed after India diverted supplies to meet its domestic needs.

The first batch of 1.238 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine, codenamed AZD1222, will be reaching Pakistan via COVAX on May 8.

The consignment will be received this Saturday at the Islamabad International Airport, The News confirmed Thursday, citing a federal government official.

Pakistan is receiving the European vaccine from a non-Indian source, the government source said.

“Around 1,238,000 doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca’sCOVID-19 vaccine (Covishield) are arriving on May 8 at the Islamabad Airport. It is the first shipment of the COVID-19 vaccine being supplied through COVAX to Pakistan from a non-Indian source,” the National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination official said.

Pakistan was supposed to get the first tranche of AstraZeneca’s coronavirus vaccine via COVAX in March, but supply was delayed after the Serum Institute of India (SII) diverted supplies to meet its domestic needs, officials said.

The National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination official said Pakistan has now managed to get the coronavirus vaccine from South Korea using influence with partner organisations.

When is the second batch of AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine due?
A second batch of the coronavirus vaccines has been committed in June alongside ‘a little over 0.1 million’ of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine doses, the federal government official said, adding that even Moderna’s vaccine could be supplied to Pakistan through COVAX.

Responding to a query if the syringes were also being delivered along with vaccine to Pakistan, the official maintained that GAVI supplies are always bundled having corresponding quantities of syringes. “Our timely acquisition of UCC (ultra cold chain) freezers has put us ahead for Pfizer and Moderna through COVAX,” the official added.

The COVAX vaccine supply situation is likely to improve significantly in the second half of 2021 as more vaccines are likely to be secured by the WHO and EUA, including Chinese vaccines, he said, adding that COVAX has assured Pakistan of providing at least 100,000 doses of mRNA vaccines of Pfizer BioNtech by June this year.

Locally processed Cansino vaccine to be available by month’s end: minister

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar on Friday said the first batch of the Cansino vaccine being processed locally at the National Institute of Health (NIH) would be available for use by the end of May.

He urged people to spend the last days of Ramazan and Eid with simplicity and caution.

On the other hand, 140 deaths and 4,298 new Covid-19 cases were reported in a single day.

In his tweet, Asad Umar, who also heads the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), said: “The first batch of bulk cansino vaccine being processed at the national Institute of health plant set up for this purpose last month. Specially trained team working on it. Will inshallah be available for use by end of May after going thru rigorous quality control checks.”

In another tweet, he said due to timely decisions, the country was spared the kind of situation being witnessed in the neighbouring country. He, however, said the nation had to spend this critical time with caution.

According to the NCOC data, Pakistan saw another 140 patients losing their battle against coronavirus and 4,298 getting infected in a single day as the national positivity ratio was recorded at 9.58 per cent.

With the emergence of the new cases, the tally of infections since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country has crossed 850,000. The death toll stands at 18,677 while the number of recoveries reported across the country is 747,755. Active cases remained at 83,699 as of May 7.

Health authorities have warned that the next few days were critical, calling on people to observe the standard operating procedures (SOPs) to prevent the spread of the virus.

During the last 24 hours, Punjab reported 1,995 new patients and 82 deaths. The total number of cases since the virus was first reported in the province has risen to 314,517 while the death toll has reached 8,891. Balochistan recorded 116 new cases during the last 24 hours, taking the provincial tally to 23,016. According to officials, with the new fatalities, the number of casualties has surged to 243. As many as 21,361 patients have also recovered from the virus in the province.

The most ventilators were occupied in four areas – Gujranwala 69pc, Multan 65pc, Lahore 64pc and Islamabad Capital Territory, 45pc.

Similarly, the maximum number of oxygenated beds was in use in Swabi, 67pc; Peshawar, 64pc; Multan, 59pc and Gujranwala, 58pc.

Around 653 Covid-19 patients are on ventilators elsewhere in the country with no person on vent in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Gilgit-Baltistan and Balochistan.

A total of 44,846 tests were conducted on Thursday out of which 13,821 were carried out in Sindh, 17,599 in Punjab, 7,486 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 3,836 in Islamabad, 1,192 in Balochistan, 308 in Gilgit-Baltistan and 604 in AJK.

As many as 747,755 people have so far recovered from the virus, with over 90pc recovery ratio.

A total of 12,101,832 coronavirus tests have so far been conducted while 5,678 patients are under treatment in hospitals across the country.

Earlier, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan had warned people of a “very risky period ahead” as Ramazan drew to an end and the days of Eidul Fitr holidays approached.

The prime minister’s aide acknowledged there were “initial signs of some stability” during the coronavirus pandemic but cautioned people against taking the infection lightly.

“We are today in the midst of the third wave and while there may be very initial signs of some stability (in the third wave), these are very early days and this is a very risky period for us as the holy month of Ramazan is going to end and Eid is approaching,” he said at a webinar.

The webinar, titled ‘SOPs and vaccination: Solution for the Covid-19 Pandemic’ was attended by microbiologists, molecular biologists, medical professionals and students from the country as well as abroad.

Dr Sultan called on microbiologists and scientists to warn people about the dangers of coronavirus and encourage them to follow SOPs.

The National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) on Saturday said Pakistan has received about 1.23 million doses of AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine today which were procured under the COVAX programme.

It further added that out of the 3.5 million Sinovac Covid-19 jabs, one million would reach Pakistan on May 9 whereas another consignment of a million doses would reach the country between May 13-15. The remaining 1.5 million doses of the Sinovac vaccine were expected to reach the country by end of May.

The NCOC added that so far about 10.19 million doses of different vaccines (Sinopharm, Sinovac and CanSino) had reached Pakistan.

Pakistan’s nerve centre to control the Covid-19 pandemic again urged all citizens, especially senior citizens aged 60 years and above, to get themselves vaccinated on priority as they are most vulnerable to the disease.

On May 7, it was reported that the second batch of Covid-19 vaccines assisted by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) was delivered to the Pakistan Army on May 6, the China Military Online (CMO) reported.

According to CMO, the vaccines were provided with the approval of the Central Military Commission (CMC) for the implementation of "President Xi Jinping's declaration on making China's Covid-19 vaccine a global public good".

Pakistan Army received the first batch of the vaccine from the Chinese PLA on February 8, becoming the first foreign military to get the Covid-19 vaccine assistance from the Chinese military.

Meanwhile, the first batch of China’s CanSino Covid-19 vaccines which Pakistan purchased in bulk had been transported to the country, a spokesperson of CanSino Biologics told Xinhua.

Pakistan to open vaccine registration for 30-39 age group from Sunday

ISLAMABAD: Pakistanis aged 30 and above will be able to get themselves registered for the coronavirus vaccine from Sunday, May 16.

This was revealed by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) chief Asad Umar on Wednesday.

In a tweet, Umar explained that the government had decided to open registrations for another age group as the vaccine supply in Pakistan continues to improve and the country's vaccination capacity gets enhanced day by day.

"Starting Sunday the 16th of May, registration will be open to all 30 years and older citizens," he tweeted.

On May 3, Pakistan opened registration for the coronavirus vaccination for people aged between 40 to 49 years across the country.

The vaccine registration for the age group has been going on since April 27, whereas walk-in vaccinations for people aged 50 and above are underway in the country.

Vaccination centres are vaccinating people in two shifts during Ramadan, the NCOC had earlier stated.

A digital portal has been launched by the federal government for the registration through which a code is assigned to the person and then they can go to a designated vaccination centre and get a jab.

Pakistan opens walk-in vaccination for people above 40 from May 12
Umar had earlier announced that walk-in vaccination facility for people above 40-years-old will be opened from May 12 onwards.

"Starting tomorrow the 12th of May all 40 plus who have registered will be able to walk into any vaccination centre of their choice and get vaccinated," the minister wrote on Twitter.

He had also informed that vaccination centres are opened for this week and will only be closed for two days on account of Eid-ul-Fitr.

The minister, in a series of tweets, had also pointed out the death rate among people under the age of 40 years has risen during the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic in Pakistan.

Earlier, it was 1% but has risen to 1.8%.

Moreover, the minister had stressed that it is important that the vaccination is concentrated on the most vulnerable segments of the society.

He had said that the risk of mortality due to COVID-19 rises sharply with age.

"In Pakistan, the case fatality rate based on cumulative data this strong linkage in our country also reason why we are opening vaccination based on age in descending order is due to finite availability of vaccines globally, as well as vaccination capacity in the country," the minister had underscored.

He had then mentioned that both supplies of vaccines and vaccination capacity are continuously increasing with concerted efforts.

Thry have started to mix doses. First dose sinovac and second dose sinopham

Where? This is highly unethical if true, unless it is under a controlled trail environment.

The govt has no idea about the vaccines.

The issue is, they get donations of sinovac in excessive(for example). Which they than allocate to cities. Now everyone shows up and gets vaccinated and wait for the 21 days. By the next 20 days, they dont get enough sinovac supply and get more of sinopham supply. THus, they will mix it up.

Even the 1166 helpline person did not know this, and try to claim that you will get the second dosage agianst the first dosage you which is saved in system against ur cnic.

I asked him to recheck, as i saw a notifcation outside shebaz shareef sports complex in pindi where vaccine is being given.
He checked and came back and said i was right. It didn't matter what vaccine you got as first dossage, the second vaccine will be given to according to whats available.

Now, they are doing this with sinovac and sinopham, i just hope they dont end up doing this with Astera Zeneca.

The vaccine rollout is becoming a joke. THese are the ground realities, but our foreign ppers would want to praise the govt.

How can this be? I suppose there are doctors deployed at these centers. Do you have any local news complaining about vaccine mixing?

How can this be? I suppose there are doctors deployed at these centers. Do you have any local news complaining about vaccine mixing?

no one is complaining.

I saw a poster and was concern my mom and grandma doesnt end up getting mixed dose. So i called 1166

The poster said, if 1st dose than you get asterea zeneca, if you are getting 2nd dose than is sinopham.

I was concerned, my mom who got sinopham doesnt end up getting sinovac like this if sinopham isn't available. My grandmother got sinovac, and it looks like she will get second does of sinopham.
So i called up to confirm this, and the operator confirmed that second dose might be different depending on whats available now.

How can this be? I suppose there are doctors deployed at these centers. Do you have any local news complaining about vaccine mixing?

doctors are not well trained. THey dont tell you what vaccine you are getting or after how many days you have to come. You have to ask yourself. While i was able to ask for my mom and grand mother, i know alot of people who didnt ask as the doc there said nothing

Peshawar starts using sniffer dogs at airport to detect coronavirus among passengers

PESHAWAR: Sniffer dogs are now being used to identify passengers with coronavirus arriving at the Bacha Khan International Airport in Peshawar.

The dogs have been specially trained to detect the COVID-19 infection among travellers arriving from abroad.

A delegation from the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) visited the Bacha Khan International Airport in Peshawar and supervised the medical examination of passengers from two flights arriving at the airport.

The NCOC delegation was told in a briefing that rapid antigen tests are also being carried out on passengers arriving in Peshawar from abroad.

According to the airport's manager, Obaidullah Abbasi, the delegation said the coronavirus identification measures at the Peshawar airport were satisfactory.

He confirmed that trained sniffer dogs were being used to diagnose coronavirus among passengers.

Swab tests are done on incoming passengers and then a dog sniffs the swab to check for the virus, he explained, adding that if the dog sits down after sniffing the swab, the passenger is declared positive for COVID-19.

So far, coronavirus has been detected in four passengers at the Peshawar airport with the help of sniffer dogs. They were rushed to a hospital for quarantine.

Pakistan receives first batch of Pfizer vaccine under COVAX

Shipments of Pfizer diluents and syringes will be arriving over the next two days, announces

UNICEFPakistan has received over 100,000 doses of Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine under the World Health Organisation’s COVAX programme, UNICEF’s Pakistan chapter announced in a tweet on Friday.

“Shipments of Pfizer diluents and syringes will be arriving over the next two days. The vaccines will be used for Pakistan's ongoing Covid-19 vaccination campaign,” it added.

The UNICEF also commended the government and federal ministry of health for the successful rollout of the countrywide coronavirus vaccination campaign, “excellent arrangements at vaccination centres and inclusion of all above 18 years of age”.

The shipment of Pfizer is the second consignment of vaccines received by the country via COVAX.

“Earlier this month, UNICEF had led the efforts to procure and deliver more than one million doses of AstraZenaca vaccine to Pakistan on behalf of COVAX,” said the UN agency in a statement.

“Covid-19 vaccines are safe and effective. If you are 18 or above, please send your CNIC (without space) to 1166 and get registered in government's vaccination campaign. No one is safe until everyone is safe.”

The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) has announced opening walk-in vaccinations for citizens aged 30 years and above from tomorrow (Saturday), as well as for teachers aged 18 and above.

In a message on his official Twitter handle, NCOC chief Asad Umar informed that the decision to allow vaccinations for citizens aged 30 and above was taken at a meeting of the NCOC

He urged all 30+ people who have registered for the vaccination to visit any vaccination centre and get inoculated.

More than 383,000 vaccine doses administered yesterday in new record: Asad Umar
Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar has shared that more than 383,000 vaccine doses were administered across the country yesterday in what he termed a "new record".

Around 11.7 million people have registered for vaccination so far, according to Umar, while seven million doses have been administered.

-----

With respect to the locally produced vaccines, 3m a month is a good start but if they want to administer 500k per day, that's only 6 days of supply per month. Ideally they should be producing at least 10m a month to cover at least half a month's supply. I am not sure if there are plans to expand this. OTOH, I suppose 3m is better than nothing given most countries don't have local production.

Also, only 11.7m people registering for vaccination is shockingly low. Pakistan does have some anti-vaxxer sentiment but it's still not so high that only 11.7m people would have registered so far. I've heard anecdotally that some people don't want Chinese vaccines.

How many have been vaccinated?

The roll out is better than UK I think. Here it has been a joke ngl. I get jealous from my American and Canadian friends who already been vaccinated and I am yet to get my first dose and the whole 60 day gap thing is a joke too. I hope the single shot vaccine gets released soon

Vaccination here in Norway is also very slow. I am 41 and I will get my first (and only) dose in July. I am not worried about myself as I am immune since I was infected with the british variant in February. But pity for others who have to wait till July.

As far as I know vaccination process is going smoothly. Yesterday my mom had her first dose and my chachoo & chachii had their 2nd which was 3 weeks apart from the 1st dose.

In a first, Pakistan vaccinates over 383,000 people against coronavirus in a day

Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar on Sunday said over 383,000 people were vaccinated in a day for the first time in Pakistan on Saturday.

The minister shared the update on Twitter, stating that over 7 million people have been vaccinated against the coronavirus so far.

Alhamdulillah, a new record [regarding] vaccination was set in one day yesterday. More than 383,000 people were vaccinated. So far, more than 7 million have been vaccinated," Umar wrote on Twitter

The federal minister further said that the number of registrants is also steadily increasing, disclosing that 11.663 million people have registered so far.

A day earlier, the NCOC had opened up walk-in coronavirus vaccinations for people aged 30 and above and teachers over 18 years old.

Walk-in vaccination for teachers above 18 years of age is open. Teachers can walk-in to any vaccination centre with CNIC, a stamped letter from the head of Institution / Teachers’ ID Card and get themselves vaccinated,” the NCOC tweeted later on the same day.

A digital portal has been launched by the federal government for the registration through which a code is assigned to the person. They can then go to a designated vaccination centre and get a jab.

As far as I know vaccination process is going smoothly. Yesterday my mom had her first dose and my chachoo & chachii had their 2nd which was 3 weeks apart from the 1st dose.

I wouldn't say it's going smoothly. Only 11.7m people have registered for vaccination. It should at least be 50m.

Wait what...

I wouldn't say it's going smoothly. Only 11.7m people have registered for vaccination. It should at least be 50m.

Its not perfect yet but ramping up smoothy. They should atleast aim for 500 000 doses per day. That should be their minimum lets say in 2 weeks time.

read somewhere that they can detect BP spike, sugar spikes and Heart attacks too apart from covid-19

There's a consensus that covid can be transmitted from humans to pet dogs and cats.

So I'm not sure making dogs sniff the swabs of humans suspected of covid infection is the best idea, either from the perspective of the well being of the animal or from the perspective of protecting the swab that goes for testing from contamination.

Looks like 7m doses so far. It is accelerating quite a bit though. Not too long ago Pakistan was at 150k doses a day, now closer to 300k a day.

7mn in two months. Wont say its bad, but the availability of vaccines is a big issue. Pakistan will receive Covax vaccines for 20 percent of the population. Rest i guess is Sputnik, which ok.

Problem is the chinese vaccine. Hope its use is limited.

There is nothing wrong with the Chinese vaccine, my friend in the UAE got the Chinese vaccine too.

Most of the vaccines being rolled out are Chinese (Sinopharm, Sinovac, Cansino) and there have been cases of mixed doses as well. It's a disaster waiting to happen, but it keeps morale high among those that have been vaccinated. The flipside is that there will be an element of complacency as a consequence of vaccination.

Some folks I know have had antibody tests done, and Sputnik has shown the best output of antibodies. The Chinese vaccines have been fairly ineffective in that respect.

Uae is having to give people a third dose of the Chinese vaccine, within 6 months. Previously they had to give a 3rd dose to people as they failed to develop antibodies. These vaccines are not very effective.

It seems like the third dose is limited to only a few percent of the population. In other countries like Chile and Uruguay it seems to reduce the probability of hospitalization and death by 80-90%. That's not as good as mRNA vaccines or Sputnik but still a substantial difference.

Chile has had a huge surge in cases despite wide vaccination by a chiness vaccine.

I haven't heard any other vaccine requiring a third dose so soon. Seems the vaccine has a weak immune response.

Based on what I have read about Chile, the bulk of the new infections seem to be in the people that haven't been vaccinated yet. It does seem to be the case that a single dose of SinoVac isn't very effective, whereas for mRNA vaccines the first dose has a large efficacy number just 2 weeks afterwards.

ISLAMABAD: Amid a constant decline in infections, Pakistan reported the lowest coronavirus ratio of 4.05% in almost three months on Monday after 2,117 new cases emerged during the past 24 hours across the country.

Last time, the country recorded a COVID-19 positivity rate of 4.04% on March 5. Pakistan has now reported a positivity ratio below 5% for the seventh consecutive day.

According to the official data provided by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), about 52,223 tests were conducted during the past 24 hours out of which 2,117 returned positive, taking the total caseload to 921,053 as of today.

At least 43 people lost the battle to coronavirus during the past 24 hours, taking the total death toll to 20,779 across country.

The number of active cases stands at 56,347 whereas about 607,205 people have recovered from the virus so far.

The third wave of the pandemic is gradually abating amid vaccination drives being carried out across the country.

Last week, the NCOC had opened up walk-in coronavirus vaccinations for people aged 30 and above and teachers over 18 years old.

“Walk-in vaccination for teachers above 18 years of age is open. Teachers can walk-in to any vaccination centre with CNIC, a stamped letter from the head of Institution / Teachers’ ID Card and get themselves vaccinated,” the NCOC tweeted later on the same day.

Thats good, hopefully they can increase this to double in 4-6weeks time

Ultimately all of us will require booster doses, but from what i have read, it will be after 9 to 12 months.

Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar, who is also the chief of National Command and Control Centre (NCOC), said on Monday that the government was gradually opening business activities as the positivity rate in the country had come down from 10-11 per cent to 4%.

Briefing the media in Islamabad over the Covid-19 situation in Pakistan, he said that due to the timely decisions of the government, the spread of coronavirus, which had reached dangerous levels, is on the decline now. However, he added, that the masses are still needed to be cautious as the pandemic is still not over.

"The positivity rate, which had reached 10-11%, had come down to 4.5% last week and yesterday it was just over 4%," the NCOC chief said but added that the positivity rate in Sindh is still a bit high and the situation needed to be handled carefully.

"Fortunately, Pakistan did not witness the situation faced by some other countries in the region but we still need to be cautious because pandemic is not over yet."

Talking about resumption of normal life, Asad said that the only way to get rid of Covid-19 pandemic is by administrating vaccine to as many people as possible and as quickly as possible.

“We're seeing a positive trend in countries where a large number of people are being vaccinated... the positivity ratio in these countries is on the decline and they're now moving towards a normal life... we have to do the same in Pakistan," he added.

The NCOC chief said that Pakistan has vaccinated over 7 million people so far and the government's target is to vaccinate at least 70 million people by the end of the year.

He also announced initiating a vast campaign to encourage people to get vaccinated. "We are holding a meeting at NCOC tomorrow where we have invited media owners... the way media ran awareness campaigns for the pandemic, we want similar kind of cooperation from them for the vaccination campaign," he added.

Asad further said that the government would also approach the religious scholars as they have great influence over the masses. "We have requested the president to meet with Ulema and convey this [vaccination] message to them as safeguarding our own selves is also a religious obligation," he added.

ISLAMABAD: As the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) opened vaccination for people over 18 years of age from Thursday, the government on Monday approved a $130 million grant (about Rs20 billion) to purchase 10m doses of Covid-19 vaccine before June 30.

The estimated amount required to inoculate the target population of 72m against coronavirus is $1.5bn.

Meanwhile, Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar said the government was aiming to vaccinate maximum number of people before Eidul Azha to avoid imposing lockdown.

According to an official statement, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet was specially called to provide technical supplementary grant of $130 million (Rs20 billion) to the National Disaster Management Fund to ensure timely procurement of vaccines for effective national response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The funds will be utilised for the procurement of 10m doses during June.

The decision was taken at a hurriedly-called single point ECC meeting presided over by Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin and attended by three, out of 14, other members.

The meeting decided to review the need for additional funds during the new financial year and make further allocations if required in the budget.

The administration of vaccine will be the responsibility of the Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) and provincial health departments.

The meeting was told that Pakistan was currently managing the third wave of Covid-19, which was more challenging than the previous waves, whereas the situation in neighbouring countries, particularly in India, was alarming where the average death rate exceeded 3,500 per day.

Besides, since the arrival of vaccines, most governments were primarily focusing on vaccinating their population as the principal instrument of their preventive strategy against the pandemic.

The NHS ministry was initially made responsible to procure vaccine for which it was allocated $150 million, and which had already been expended and committed on account of finalised contracts for purchasing the vaccine.

However, the National Coordination Committee (NCC) on Covid-19 led by Prime Minister Imran Khan on April 23, 2021 assigned the responsibility of vaccine procurement to the NDMA, which had been given the target of arranging doses for a population of 70 million by December 2021.

The ECC was also informed that the NDMA had established a Vaccine Procurement Cell to purchase the vaccine from international market and governments.

The authority would procure the vaccine and hand over the consignments to the NHS ministry at airports or ports for further handling, storage, transportation and delivery in various parts of the country.

The meeting also advised the NDMA to explore the possibility of purchasing vaccine from external financial resources through the Economic Affairs Division. The option to reimburse the expenditure related to procurement of doses through development partners may also be explored.

On the other hand, the decision to start vaccination of people over 18 years was announced by Asad Umar.

In a tweet, Mr Umar, who also heads the NCOC, said: “In today’s NCOC meeting it was decided to start scheduling vaccination of registered 18 plus from Thursday the 3rd of June. With this step the vaccination of all eligible age groups would be carried out. Please register as soon as possible.”

Almost 100 per cent of the population that can be inoculated has become eligible to receive the vaccine as a result of this decision and 39 million people in the age bracket of 18 to 30 years will benefit.

An NHS ministry official, who is not authorised to speak to media, said the number of people over 50 years of age was 27 million, around 12 million fell in the age bracket of 40 to 50 years while 22 million people were in the age group of 30 to 40 years.

The official said though 100pc population eligible for vaccination would be able to get the jabs from June 3, so far less than five million people had been partially or fully vaccinated.

“People should get inoculated at the earliest as the government has been using all possible resources to ensure uninterrupted supply of the vaccine,” he said.

On the other hand, the NCOC data reported 2,117 new cases and 43 deaths in the last 24 hours, with the positivity ratio recorded at 4.05pc.

As many as 448 patients were on ventilators while the number of active cases was 59,033. Besides, 4,280 patients were being treated in hospitals across the country.

Meanwhile, Asad Umar said lockdowns were no more solution to contain the virus.

Briefing media after attending the meeting of the National Coordination Committee (NCC), the minister said vaccination was the only way the pandemic could be tackled, which was why the government had decided to run a massive drive to achieve the target of inoculating 70 million people, adds APP.

Mr Umar said the NCC meeting, which was presided over by Prime Minister Imran Khan, endorsed the vaccination drive strategy prepared by the NCOC.

“We want to administer vaccines to a maximum number of people in June and July before Eidul Azha to avoid imposing lockdown during the festival,” the minister said.

He said the forum took some difficult decisions during the last 10 days of Ramazan and Eid but they proved beneficial as the positivity ratio came down from around 11 per cent to 4pc.

However, in Sindh the pandemic was still spreading, he said, adding that Covid-19 had not ended yet and people should still follow SOPs.

The minister said positive results were seen in countries where the rate of vaccination was high, adding that in Pakistan, so far, about 5.3 million people had been inoculated.

He said there was no issue of vaccine availability as the government had already arranged 10 million doses while 10m more would become available in June and another 10m in July.

He said to make the drive successful the government would engage various stakeholders, including media, bar councils, religious scholars and trade bodies.

It's not about harm. Primary function of vaccine is to develop antibodies in body. You can get to know this with blood tests I guess. There have been cases of this not happening

Sindh CM orders finance ministry to stop salaries of govt employees who refuse Covid-19 vaccines

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah appealed to people to get vaccinated at vaccination centres. —

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Thursday directed the finance ministry to stop the salaries from July of government employees who refuse to get themselves vaccinated against the novel coronavirus.

Presiding over a meeting of the provincial task force on Covid-19, which was attended by provincial ministers, the chief secretary, law enforcers and medical experts, the chief minister said: "Government employees who do not get themselves vaccinated will have their salaries stopped from July."

He instructed the chief secretary to give the month of June for government employees to get themselves vaccinated and also declared Covid-19 vaccinations mandatory for citizens.

"We have to secure our citizens by taking some drastic measures," he said.

Giving additional directions for the vaccination campaign, CM Murad also instructed the 300 basic health units across the province to establish vaccination centres and set a cumulative daily target of 30,000 vaccine administrations.

Five mobile vaccination teams would, meanwhile, be established at every taluka level and given a target of 60,000 vaccines to be administered daily. “We have 605 talukas and they must vaccinate at least 60,000 people per day,” he ordered.

He also directed the health department to instruct the around 90 private hospitals in the province to target 10,000 vaccine doses daily and register more private hospitals for vaccinations.

The decisions came after Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday allowed the Sindh government to extend lockdown restrictions for another week to curb the spread of the coronavirus in the province. A source told Dawn that CM Murad had informed the prime minister that the provincial government wanted to extend the lockdown restrictions for another week.

Indian Variant in Sindh
Health Secretary Kazim Jatoi informed Thursday's meeting that four passengers on May 29 were diagnosed with the Indian variant of the coronavirus and isolated while the 14 people they had come into contact with had also been tested.

The session was also informed about the situation in Karachi, where the positivity rate on June 1 had been 12.45 per cent and 11.77pc on June 2.

From May 27 to June 2, there was an increase of 21pc in new cases in Karachi's district East and 20 deaths. The Central district, meanwhile, recorded a positivity rate of 12pc and 15 deaths while 9pc and nine deaths were recorded in district South and 8pc and seven deaths in district West.

The meeting was further informed that a total of 392 deaths had been recorded in the province in the last 30 days, of whom 238 patients had been on ventilators. Currently, 77 people are on ventilators with 74 of them being in Karachi.

The chief minister remarked after being informed of these figures that the situation had not improved in the province and the number of deaths had increased from April when 154 deaths had been recorded. “This is a serious situation, and we have to control our death rate.”

The chief minister was also briefed on the vaccination progress so far and informed that 78,799 vaccines doses had been administered on June 2 across the province with 57,541 as a first dose and 21,258 as a second dose. A total of 1,550,553 doses had so far been administered in Sindh.

PIA plane carrying 1 million doses of Sinopharm vaccine lands in Islamabad

A special plane of Pakistan International Airlines carrying one million doses of Sinopharm vaccine has reached Islamabad, according to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC).

In a statement, the NCOC said Pakistan will be receiving a total of 11 million doses of Sinopharm, Sinovac and Cansino vaccines during June.

According to the NCOC, steps are being taken to ensure the uninterrupted supply of Covid-19 vaccine in the country and the vaccination capacity is being ramped up.

ISLAMABAD: National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) chief Asad Umar on Wednesday announced that 10 million doses of coronavirus vaccines have been administered in Pakistan so far.

Addressing a brief press conference to mark the achievement, Umar said the government's decisions to curb the virus were proving "effective" during the third wave of the pandemic.

"The more quickly we get ourselves vaccinated, the faster we will be able to rid ourselves of this menace," he said, requesting people to get themselves vaccinated so that business could reopen and life could return to its normal state in Pakistan.

Umar said the government as well as the masses had done a commendable job in following coronavirus SOPs, resulting in the number of cases dropping.

"We have seen that when Pakistanis, as a nation, decide to do something, then they do it," he said.

The federal minister said that while it was an impressive achievement, the government wanted to expedite the campaign and vaccinate 70 million people by the end of the year.

The NCOC chief said Pakistan was vaccinating an estimated 300,000 people on a daily basis against the coronavirus, adding that more than 300,000 were registering for the vaccine on a daily basis.

Earlier, the minister had taken to Twitter to announce that Pakistan will cross the 1,00,00,000 doses mark today.

Pakistan has seen a rise in coronavirus vaccinations on a daily basis ever since June 3, when the country started vaccinating those who over the age of 18 years.

Umar had encouraged the public to get themselves registered for vaccination at the earliest.

On May 16, Pakistan had opened registrations for citizens aged 19 and above for coronavirus vaccination. In a tweet, Umar had said registration will be open for the entire national population which is approved by health experts for the vaccine.

Umar had explained that the government was opening up registrations for more age groups as Pakistan's vaccine supply continues to improve and the country's vaccination capacity gets enhanced day by day.

On May 3, Pakistan opened registration for the vaccination of people aged between 40 to 49 years across the country and, subsequently, began walk-in vaccinations for people of the same age group.

A digital portal has been launched by the federal government for the registration through which a code is assigned to the person. They can then go to a designated vaccination centre and get a jab.

Two million vaccine doses present in inventory: Dr Faisal

Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan said on Wednesday that two million doses of the anti-Covid-19 vaccine are present in Pakistan's inventory.

Recently the PM's aide on health stated that approximately 2.2 million people are fully vaccinated against coronavirus in Pakistan, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, adding that more than 3.7 million have received at least one dose.

"Approximately eight million doses have been administered. Pakistan is among the top 30 countries of the world in terms of vaccine doses administered."

However, Dr Faisal said that the world is facing a shortage of vaccines, and Pakistan will receive more doses after June 20.

The premier's aide added that the authorities are trying to ensure a steady supply to all vaccination centres, but some face a temporary shortage from time to time.

A break of a few weeks before the second vaccination dose will not be detrimental, he clarified.

Dr Faisal emphasized that the adherence to SOPs was still the most important part of the government's anti-Covid response and that the country had not reached a point where it can depend entirely on vaccinations.

Earlier, the prime minister's aide had rejected the speculations regarding the non-availability of the Sinopharm vaccine in the country.

Pakistan in its coronavirus vaccination drive has mostly used vaccines imported from China.

The country has received over 13 million doses of China’s Sinopharm, Sinovac and CanSino Covid-19 vaccines and AstraZeneca from the COVAX, according to National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC).

The federal government has placed emergency orders for supplies of the coronavirus vaccines to overcome a countrywide jabs shortage, Dr Faisal Sultan, the adviser to the prime minister on health affairs, said on Saturday.

Talking to Anadolu Agency, he said that the country is set to receive fresh supplies of Covid-19 vaccines from Sunday.

The country, he said, is slated to receive around seven million vaccine doses by the end of June, mainly from China.

Islamabad will receive the first batch of the fresh supplies, possibly about 1.5 million doses, on Sunday.

"The situation will be normalised from Monday after the arrival of the fresh supplies," Dr Faisal, also effectively acting as the health minister, noted.

"We still have 1 million doses in stock. But definitely, they are not enough to be distributed across the country," he went on to say.

Though Dr Faisal did not elaborate on what caused the shortages, a senior health official, wishing not to be named as he was not allowed to speak on the record, blamed a mix of bureaucratic labyrinths and delay in supplies of locally produced single-dose CanSino vaccines.

The state-run National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad that produced the vaccine -- renamed as PakVac -- under the supervision of Chinese experts "failed" to provide the promised three million doses in June, according to the official.

Meanwhile, authorities in the Sindh province have shut all vaccine centres for Sunday, whereas only a few centres are functioning in Punjab due to the ongoing jabs shortage.

Addressing a news conference in Karachi, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah announced that there will be no vaccination on Sunday because of the vaccine paucity.

While, in Punjab, home to over 110 million people, out of 677 vaccination centres, only a few are functioning, according to media reports.

The province, according to health officials, required immediate supplies of 2.8 million doses to resume the normal course of vaccination.

Out of 207 million population, Pakistan has so far inoculated nearly 12 million people amid a decline in coronavirus cases. It plans to inoculate 70 million people by the end of this year.

On Saturday, the country recorded 991 cases with 27 deaths, pushing the overall caseload and death toll to 947,218 and 21,940, respectively.

Pakistan's total number of active cases is 35,491 with a tally of 889,787 recoveries.

Pakistan is expected to receive 2.5 million doses of Moderna Covid-19 vaccine next week, the United States government announced in Washington on Monday.

While announcing the dispatch of vaccines to Pakistan, Peru and Honduras, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki referred to President Joe Biden's commitment to playing a leading role in ending the pandemic everywhere.

In addition to Pakistan, the US will also ship two million doses of Pfizer vaccine to Peru, and 1.5m doses of Moderna vaccine to Honduras.

"Over this week, we'll be able to announce more places that the United States will be sending our doses," Psaki added.

Earlier this month, Biden had announced that the US would dispatch seven million Covid-19 vaccines to South and Southeast Asia to help regional governments overcome the pandemic.

India, however, would get its share from another tranche of six million vaccines kept aside for the countries experiencing surges, the White House had said at the time.

Pakistan and Bangladesh would get their shares from the seven million marked for distribution in South and Southeast Asia.

The US would donate 75 per cent of its unused vaccines to the UN-backed Covax global vaccine sharing programme, Biden had announced.

Think the situation is now getting desperate with the spread of the delta variant, while vaccination rates remain alarmingly low. It's not the fault of the government, the rollout has been fairly good under the circumstances, but misinformation about the harmful effects of vaccines is preventing a lot of folks from getting vaccinated.

Don't really see how the pandemic can be contained without high vaccination rates, fear it'll be a complete blow-up due to the twin cultural effects of general public disregard for covid restrictions and an intrinsic disinclination to be vaccinated for many individuals.

As long as they don't complain when it goes pear shaped. You can't on the one hand say its a hoax and the vaccine is a conspiracy and then moan when it gets you.

ISLAMABAD:
National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) chief Asad Umar said on Wednesday that Pakistan achieved a record Covid-19 vaccination mark with 778,000 jabs administered in a single day.

In a tweet, Umar also stated that a total of 561,000 people were administered the first dose in the Covid-19 inoculation drive.

“New target: to Inshallah cross 1 million vaccinations in a day,” the NCOC chairman added.

Earlier, on July 24, he said that with 102, the rate of Covid-19 deaths per million in Pakistan remained the lowest in the region due to timely decisions of the government.

The minister observed that in Iran some 1,037 people died out of a one million population while in Nepal the number was 326, India 301, Sri Lanka 186, Afghanistan 160, and Bangladesh 113.

However, he warned that the risk was not over yet and people should therefore follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and also have themselves vaccinated against the disease.

Covid update

Pakistan's tally for confirmed coronavirus cases reached 1,015,827 on Tuesday after 4,119 more cases of the deadly virus were recorded from across the country in a day.

At least 44 fatalities were also reported, taking the death toll to 23,133. According to the government's official Covid portal, about 2,898 patients were in a critical condition currently.

As many as 7,020 recoveries were also recorded, taking the tally for recoveries to 935,742.

The fourth wave of coronavirus showed no signs of abating as the single-day tally of new cases surpassed the 4,000 level for the first time in two months, while the authorities came close to achieving an ambitious target of administering one million vaccine doses in a day.

According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), the nerve centre of the government’s synchronised effort against the pandemic, the national positivity ratio also reached an alarming 7.8%, the highest level during the ongoing Covid wave.

In its daily update, the NCOC said that during the past 24 hours, 4,119 people tested positive, taking the national caseload from the disease to 1,015,827. The last time the NCOC reported more than 4,000 coronavirus cases in a single day was on May 22.

However, on the back of 7,020 recoveries, the number of active cases declined to 56,952 on Wednesday, the forum said. Overall, 935,742 people have recovered from the disease, so far, depicting a significant recovery ratio of over 90%.

Among the active cases, the NCOC said, 3,286 patients were admitted to 639 Covid-dedicated health facilities across the country, including 2,898 in critical condition. The forum said 176 patients were hospitalised during the past 24 hours, while 294 patients were on ventilators.

The update said that 44 patients, of them 39 in the hospitals, including 20 on ventilators, died during the last 24 hours, taking the nationwide death toll to 23,133. Most of the deaths, 20, occurred in Sindh followed by 12 in Punjab.

The country is in the grip of a fourth wave of the disease, fuelled by the Indian-origin Delta variant of coronavirus. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) the death rate in Pakistan hovered between 2.30% and 2.37% in July, which was higher than the worldwide death rate of 2.17% in July.

To control the spread of the pandemic, the government had enforces several standard operating procedures (SOPs), along with a robust vaccination campaign. on Tuesday, the authorities administered a record 778,000 Covid jabs.

Planning Minister Asad Umar, who also heads the NCOC, said in a tweet that the country would cross the target of 1 million Covid vaccinations in one day. On Tuesday, he added, a record 561,000 people received their first jab.

Around 800k doses per day now? That's a really good number, although I wonder what the number on the weekends look like. It will be interesting to see how long it can be sustained.

Doctors working in Karachi's hospitals have been warning of a surge in Covid-19 cases, particularly among individuals who have not yet been vaccinated — and who account for over 85 per cent of admissions to ICUs in recent days, according to a study by the Sindh health department.

“In the last two weeks, out of the 88 patients in Civil's Covid ICU, 84 were unvaccinated,” said Dr Azizullah Khan Dhiloo, administrator of the Covid-19 ICU at Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital, Karachi.

Dr Dhiloo said the hospital has witnessed a sharp rise in citizens coming to the emergency and is struggling to cater with the influx. The latest surge is the result of the Delta variant, originally detected in India some months ago, along with lax social attitudes and increased activity around Eidul Azha.

On July 26, the Civil hospital halted all its key functions, shut outpatient departments (OPDs) and suspended surgeries till further orders on account of the sharp spike in Covid-19 cases.

“The Covid triage at Civil Hospital was usually filled with 150-200 people on a daily basis. However, in recent days, the number has gone up to 500 a day, with some 50 serious cases requiring hospitalisations.

“The doctors and nurses are overwhelmed. People need to think about the burden that is being placed on medical facilities,” he said.

Talking to Dawn.com, Indus Hospital’s Dr Abdul Bari said a recent Sindh health department study had found that 85pc of the people in Covid-19 ICUs were those who were either not vaccinated or had only received one dose. “A total 106 samples were taken from various hospitals including Indus for this study,” he added.

Hospitals started compiling data on the vaccination status of patients around two weeks ago.

Dr Bari said the hospital was seeing an increase in the number of people with Covid-19 symptoms. “We have gone from 50 serious cases to over 100 severe ones that need hospitalisations.”

Dr Bari warned that non-vaccinated patients are spending a longer time in hospitals. “Those who are not vaccinated must go for the jabs immediately. Follow SOPs, wear masks, cut down on movement,” he stressed.

"Another important thing is that people who are working in hospitals and offices must avoid having lunch together. Usually, people wear masks in professional settings but tend to sit in groups and remove masks during lunch breaks. Sit alone and have your lunch,” he added.

At a meeting of the provincial taskforce on coronavirus held at the Chief Minister House on Friday, doctors warned that the Covid-19 situation in the province could turn "terrifying” and sounded alarm over the increasing pressure on hospitals as well as the rapid spread of the highly contagious Delta variant.

Sindh Health Secretary Dr Kazim Jatoi informed the meeting that a positivity rate of 13.7 per cent was recorded in the province, while 39,958 active cases had been reported as of Friday. He said 1,410 of the patients were admitted to hospitals, 1,192 of whom were critically ill and 102 were on ventilators.

The health secretary said that the positivity rate in Karachi during the last 24 hours stood at 23pc, 14.52pc in Hyderabad and 2.9pc in Sukkur.

In Karachi, the highest positivity rate was recorded in East district at 33pc, followed by 21pc in Korangi district and 19pc in West district. South and Malir districts reported a positivity rate of 17pc each.

With hospitals overwhelmed, overworked doctors and nurses grapple with the spike in numbers, with many testing positive for the virus themselves.

Major public and private sector hospitals in the city are facing Covid-19 outbreaks among staff. At one facility, over 100 staff members tested positive in a single day, forcing an entire section to be closed down.

Dr Dhiloo stressed that the government should give booster shots to medical staff. “Now is a good time for booster shots, preferably Moderna or Pfizer, for frontline workers. Any time a doctor or nurse tests positive, we have to send them for isolation. This affects the workflow at hospitals and can lead to untoward situations, especially where critical patients are involved.”

National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) chief Asad Umar said on Tuesday that the target set for vaccination of one million people in a single day was achieved yesterday (Monday), as 1.07m citizens received Covid jabs.

In a tweet, the federal minister lauded the performance of federal and provincial governments for inoculating people in “record numbers” amid a surge in infections.

Umar also shared that 50 per cent population of Islamabad has been vaccinated with at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine.

“Islamabad has become the first city in Pakistan with a population of 1 million or more to get 50% of its eligible population vaccinated with at least one dose,” he wrote on his Twitter handle.

According to the minister, Peshawar and Rawalpindi have 35 per cent of their population inoculated, while Faisalabad authorities have vaccinated 28pc of the total population. In Lahore, Gujranwala and Sargodha, 27pc of the eligible population has been vaccinated.

In Karachi, 26pc people are vaccinated while in Hyderabad, the vaccines have been administered to 25pc of the eligible population.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Health Dr Faisal also appreciated the vaccination drive across the country. In a tweet, he said “at least 30 million (cumulative) doses” have been administered so far.

“Last 10 million doses took 16 days - 8x faster than what it took to administer first 10 million [doses],” he wrote.

On August 1, Umar had said that all the past six days of the week (July 26-Aug 1) had a new “record” number of vaccinations. “A total of five million jabs were administered throughout the week,” the minister had said.

The boost in vaccination comes amid a spike in coronavirus cases across Pakistan due to the Delta variant, particularly Sindh. Due to the rise in infections, the Sindh government imposed a week-long lockdown in the province till August 8.

More than three crore have been vaccinated so far. I got Sinopharm and so far so good no side effect.

I don't know if it's because of Vaccine or not but before vaccination I had a problem of Nasal congestion and I had been using Nasal drops for smooth breathing but since I got vaccinated I am feeling much better and haven't used Nasal drops since last more than two months.

Is it because of Vaccine?

So at this rate it would take about 6-7 months to vaccinate the whole population. If they continue we could see the country achieve a decent 70%-80% rate by this winter. if it continues and we dont get another variant that is..

Could be as I know a relation who had similar issue and now much better after being vaccinated. But perhaps someone with medical expertise or authority can chime in.
