Tim Paine has yet to win a single Test Match as captain. Time is running out. This India series could be the defining moment in his career.

Although Allan Border was also an accidental captain who took over from Crying Kim Hughes. Kim Hughes himself was accidental captain as well.

But Tim Paine is no Allan Border, so far he has not made much of a Captain impact in Aussie team.

Question is If Australia defeats India in Test Series then will he continue as captain on permanent basis.

If India wins then how ACB will react, they do have some limited choices

1) Glenn Maxwell
2) Finch
3) Usman Khawaja
4) Nathan Lyon.

I think he will be captain in tests until the ashes next year. Australia usually go with a new team after WCs and ashes. They just wanted a safe pair of hands after sandpaper gate. Paine is a excellent keeper and respected in Australia. A good short term opition but long term Australia could have issues with captaincy. Mitch Marsh is the vice captain, he is inconsistent with his own form and it won't be easy for an all rounder to lead a team in the most gruelling format. Hazelwood has already said he doesn't want to be the captain.

Don't see many other options to be captain. I think Smith should be appointed captain after the WC and ashes next year.

Well one thing is for sure Smith and Warner will never be appointed as Test Captains again. Never.

Warner won't captain Australia again that is for sure. But I can see Smith capataining Australia again.

Should really be Finch, he has at least limited overs pedigree and will probably do alright in tests.

Paine's just someone new in, who has to focus on gloves too. Too much to handle. Plus I don't think he can be that leader from the front with performances like Finch can.

I know there's the issue when Warner returns who will he replace as both Khawaja and Finch are openers, but I think you could just move Khawaja to 3, Steve Smith at 4.

I think he'll be captain till at least the Ashes series next summer, unless there's an absolute disastrous result against India (a 3-1 series defeat or worse) over the next month.

It's a tricky position for CA, I don't think Smith will ever be captain again. Aaron Finch isn't good enough to play test cricket, and they've pigeonholed him into the team with more hope than belief. It's laughable to see Mitchell Marsh and Josh Hazlewood being named joint vice-captains as they don't have a clue about their leadership abilities.

At this rate, I think it'd be advisable to go down the South African route and back a young cricketer as captain within a year or two, once Paine steps aside. Maybe someone like Matt Renshaw.

I see him as captain for a few years. Reason being that Australia are still a very good side that will be back to their winning ways once Smith and Warner return.

And even if you look a few years down the line the captaincy candidates for Australia will likely be Travis Head, Mitch Marsh and Peter Handscomb rather than the ones you mentioned. Obviously it will depend on their form and how well-placed they are in their international careers but you have to understand that in Australia captains are groomed through state cricket captaincy duties. Steve Smith's actions really messed up CA's vision of the next 5 years but it still won't stop them from thinking about the future.

And out of these three I see Travis Head as the most temperamentally strong who could actually captain Australia. Handscomb could if he works out his technique but Mitch Marsh, who is the front-runner among the three is simply mediocre and also, injury prone. He won't last for long.

Tim Paine has never excited me with bat or gloves. Is he really the best Australia has?

For captain, you need to have different skillset. Off course, you need to make XI, but on top of it, you need to have leadership skills. For example, fighting capability, being able to strategize, being able to absorb pressure etc. Tim Paine seems to have these.
His elevation to captaincy reminds me to that of Lee Germon or Markram.

Lee Germon is not really an ideal example. I guess we can compare him with Sarfaraz?

We cannot compare him to Sarfaraz because Sarfaraz was already experienced before he was made captain and there was enough time for selectors to figure him out.
With Paine or Germon or even Markaram, they had a very small sample set.

The OP is missing the point.

Every Aussie knows that the batting is as hopeless without Smith and Warner as the 2010 Pakistanis when Ijaz Butt blackballed Younis and Yousuf.

So expectations are low.

Tim Paine was marked for this job from his debut against that Pakistan team in England in 2010. He was always the Chosen One, because he was mature and thoughtful and made good choices on and off the pitch.

He lost six years to injury, like Pat Cummins, but this was a surprising elevation to his original destiny.

Of the OP’s list:

1. Maxwell - not even close to Test selection.

2. Finch - not even good enough to open for Victoria.

3. Khawaja - unintelligent and brother just arrested on Terror charges.

4. Lyon - behaviour known to be similar to Warner - ask AB De Villiers.

That leaves Hazlewood and Mitch Marsh as vice-captains clearly unsuited to higher office.

But they are just marking time for Pat Cummins. He’s the only university educated player and he is the next long-term captain of Australia.

Lee Germon was blatantly inferior to Adam Parker, whereas Tim Paine is the best Aussie keeper (with the gloves) since Ian Healy.

Sorry, my phone spell-checked “Parore “ into “Parker”!

Former Australia captain Tim Paine has retired from domestic cricket after playing for Tasmania in their Sheffield Shield match against Queensland.

The 38-year-old wicketkeeper was given a guard of honour as he left the field at Bellerive Oval following the game.

Paine played 35 Tests for Australia, with 23 of those as captain after he took over from Steve Smith.

Smith was stripped of the role after a ball-tampering controversy during Australia's 2018 tour of South Africa.

Paine has not played international cricket since January 2021 and last played domestic white-ball cricket in December 2022.

Under Paine's captaincy, Australia retained the Ashes in 2019 with a 2-2 draw, becoming the first Australia side to do so in England since 2001.

They won 11, lost eight and drew four Tests during his tenure as captain. He also played 35 one-day internationals for his country and 12 Twenty20s.

Paine stepped down as Australia Test captain in November 2021 before the Ashes over a historical investigation into sexually explicit texts to a female colleague.

He said he was "exonerated", but stepped down as he had learned his texts were set to be revealed publicly.

Paine then took a leave of absence from the game, with his manager saying the player was taking "an indefinite mental health break", before he returned to play for Tasmania in October 2022.

He did not receive a Cricket Australia contract in 2022.

"He's been a phenomenal player," said Tasmania captain Jordan Silk.

"It's an incredible effort to have the longevity that he's had. He's certainly going to be missed behind the stumps.

"I'm sure a lot of guys who are playing now will say that there will never be another keeper as good as Tim Paine in Australia. So we've been incredibly blessed down here."
