India's top court has approved the government's decision to pay 50,000 rupees ($674; £498) as compensation for every death due to Covid-19.

The Supreme Court's order followed a petition by lawyers seeking compensation under India's disaster management laws.

India has officially recorded more than 447,000 Covid-19 deaths so far.

However, experts believe that up to 10 times more people could have died in the pandemic.

I think its a great the Indian court as ruled this. Other nations such as UK and US with high numbers of dead, should also follow suit.

We know India is a poor 3rd world nation, was offered a lot of help by other nations but this amount of around £500 is very low.

How much is an Indian life worth in India?

Pakistani calling another country poor and third world. Lol.

Pakistan is also a 3rd world nation. There is no shame in this for you or I.

This is factually correct, India is a 3rd world poor nation so its nice to see these folk are being compensation.

Do you agree with the compenstation?

If yes, do you agree with the amount?

Not even a million dollars could extinguish the pain of losing a loved one but for a poor person in India this sum could really help them in the short term.

This is a great gesture from the Indian government and I hope that the amount helps bereaved families find some solace.

Does this apply to every indian, or do you have to belong from middle or lower class?

I think instead of giving cimpensation, they could provide free covid treatment atleast. Treatment for covid in pakistan is quite expensive, dont know about india.

I agree, great stuff from India.

Its a shame Indians are feeling ashamed of this. They need to accept the reality of their country but be proud of their courts for this great gesture to the families.

It applies to everyone.

The treatment was completely free in 2020. If you are admitted to a govt hospital, it's almost free since the medicines/lab tests cost only a little compared to private. Though quality does differ since govt hospitals have to accommodate a lot of people (A LOT) and the number of doctors aren't enough compared to what is required.

How much is 50,000 Rupees in India? Is it one year's worth of income for poor people?

A four member family could live on it for 6 months if they have their own home (whatever the condition of that house may be). So, it kinda gives a buffer to certain extent.

It’s not possible as you already saw, the resources are limited hence the monetary compensation.

500 quid, cheap ba…… , it would cost more even to take care of an animal…

How many months will that even last. I don’t blame them for their desperation to migrate here when they are treated like that.

There's an element called cost of living which is a variable across nations and places. It's stupidity to compare like this lol.

KingKhan is from England, the slums of India are quiet notorious though

Pakistani immigrants in UK (unlike American Pakistani immigrants) should make up their mind. No wonder there's an identity crisis among them.

674 USD? This too dependant on the FX rate.

Paltry price for a life; especially if one is from the lowest caste in India. Small price to pay for votes.

What's the going rate for a cow dying in India?

Yes, its way too low. India failed in protecting people from day 1. Modis dumb lockdown giving a few hours , resulted in people dying on the streets.

I'd be shocked if much of this money actually arrives to the victims family.

Oh i see, & said person must been invited there for honorary citizenship ? For some extra ordinary contribution in science, arts or business.

In my book, a man who makes his bones in tough situations is more of a man than somone who has fled his homeland capitalizing on currency arbitrage and earning bottom of pyramid wages.

Rather than someone who was too weak to stand out from the crowd, and flees their home to another country and is ashamed of his roots.

Be it Indian or Pakistani.

Something out of Cheech and Chong.

As an Indian it would be nice to hear your views? As a poor nation, do you think India has done the right thing here by giving out this money or do you think its an embarrassment for RSS Modi and his cronies?

What a pathetic and shameless thread..OP with his well known hatred..
Giving compensation to someone's family does not mean they are putting price tag on dead person...Have some shame man... Atleast spare the people who are dead...

The point of discussion is

1. Do you agree with compensation?

2. Do you feel the amount should be higher, lower or happy with it?

Of course it boils down to how much compensation for ones life in this scenario.

I think some of our Indian friends are embarrassed due to Modi's failure.

1) Yes...Because I am from middle class family and I know how it will help people financially does not matter even if it for a shorter span of time

2) No compensation amount is small or big..

Do you have any formulae to calculate compensation for someone's life.. how you will decide

And your sole agenda is just to spread hatred and trolling.. nothing else..even you know that

And If you want to troll Modi, RSS, Third world country India..Please carry on but stop dragging people who are dead because of COVID in your troll posts

2. Please clarify - surely a fair amount can be given as with all compensation cases.

I think the governments should pay as much as possible.

If you don't like the topic, don't post. Please leave it up to the moderators to decide.

We cannot help if feelings of some Indians are hurt because they don't like the topic. Its called life, deal with it.

Please clarify how anyone can come up to the correct compensation amount..

Government should pay as much as possible..how much is enough..

And even If I don't like the topic I will post..let moderator decide if they find any post inappropriate nthey will delete it

And you ending up your every post with same closure statment...exactly what made u think that Indian posters are hurt because Indian Government paying compensation to deceased families..

And on serious note I am asking How much compensation Pakistan Government paying and are you happy with it ?

This might sound callous but why not link amount to individuals annual salary + education level..

6 months monthly income multiple by a degree of 1 for every education level attained (high school, undergrad, masters, post doc)

Life of a person working in IT sector is worth more than a daily wage labourer?

How does that work? So a PhD guy should get more compensation than a guy living under below poverty line....

I am sure Indian government can increase the compensation if they want. And they can also use Prime Minister's Fund to give compensation. :inti

Calm down. We all know how much a life of a daily wage labourer or a farmer is worth in a country like India. Government should give a minimum compensation of at least 1 lakh to everyone and then give extra compensation based on their monthly income and education level. :inti

1 lakh per month? Per year? Per person? Per family?

They are contributing more to Indian society aren’t they

What absurd logic is this
Person contributing more to society or gdp deserve greater compensation
So tomorrow If Ambani die due to COVID then goverment should compensate his family in millions
