How much will this Rohit Sharma Test hundred against South Africa cost Indian cricket?

So Rohit Sharma has scored a 150 plus as an opener in tests. Anyone and their goldfish knows that Sharma wont survive in tests as an opener outside Asia. He doesnot have the temperament.

Now this score will ensure his selection for next season. Shutting out Shaw and Gill.

3-4 years of development of Shaw or Gill.

As if other openers are ready to score hundreds overseas. Rohit is the bets we have and we should be grateful for it. We've all seen how bad Pant and other youngsters have been :inti

Didn't Pant score hundreds in Australia and England?

It doesn't matter. 70% of the Test matches are played on Flatt-ish tracks so Rohit can have a Sehwag type career averaging 55+ at most places which would cover his 20ish average in NZ and South Africa

He doesnot have the temperament.

I disagree with this part, it's not temperament which would prove his undoing as an opener but technique against the swinging ball. If anything, Sharma is more suited to open the batting rather than being forced to bat in the lower middle order. He often gets perplexed whether to stick or twist when he comes in against the old ball and struggles to build momentum. It was exactly the same when he used to bat in the middle order in white ball cricket. He needs an uncluttered mind to be able to concentrate and construct an innings. Opening the batting provides him with a certain clarity of purpose which will liberate him to score runs.

The problem is how he deals with the swinging ball in overcast conditions. However, he's not alone with that dilemma in this Indian team. I'd still back him to come good more often than not as he's a world-class batsman.

I think it would not cost India. India haven't had proper opening pair for a long time. Trying out Rohit was not a bad option.

Pretty much this.. but i also think Indian public know and Rohit will always play under pressure in overseas tests, so even 4 single digits together he will be dropped.

Nowhere it is that flat anymore, not even Lanka , talking about tests here.
Last 3-4 years have been completely different.

They'll drop Rohit when he fails abroad then recall him in a home-series in which Rohit Sharma will 'make the No. 5 spot his own' or something like that, only to be dropped soon after. Have seen Dhawan, Vijay and far too many other Indian batsmen/openers strike rich form at home, only to be brought down to earth on their tours abroad. If someone of Rohit's age and experience hasn't made it as a test batsman yet, there's probably a good reason why he never will.

Reminded me of Yuvraj's test 100s vs Pakistan (or Raina's on test debut). Despite these scores everyone knew they wouldn't make it in test cricket long term. The same will happen with Rohit.

I think Rohit will do just fine as an opener, some low scores and some big centuries, and he might end up playing 50 test matches as opener. The person who should be worried with Rohit's success is Pujara. Knowing how selfish Kohli behaves when it comes to scoring runs esp. in easy matches, he would pretty soon get tired with the idea of sitting in dressing room and having top 3 play out 60-70 overs. He and the coach will figure out a reason to have Kohli bat at no:3 and that might mean trouble for Pujara.

Shaw has to come back in and replace Sharma whenever he is ready to play. Pant ahead of saha and gill ahead of rahane. No issues with saha but he is 35 and we need to groom someone ahead of the next away cycle.

Lol this is just fear mongering, I am not a fan of Sharma opening in tests but if anyone deserves a chance in tests based on odi exploits it is Sharma. People talking as if Brandman and SRT are being sidelined to make way for Rohit.

Funny, how you underrate someone like sehwag, rohit will never become half the player seheag was.
Rohit is bullying teams with weak spinners on flat tracks, sehwag bullied murali, warne on rank turners and not only that he has scored runs at 50 avg in Australia, rohit is just a home track bully, he is'nt a good player of spin.

Bro you will regret saying this when infia tours newzealand, we have seen too much of rohit and its 100% sure that he is a flat track bully.

Character means a great deal in cricket.and Sharma has a very strong character. He will fall where others fall too but whereever he will see opportunity he will grasp it with both hands and make it count.

I hope Shaw isn't the sacrificial goat. Mayank-Shaw must open in NZ.

He made inconsequential hundreds in both the countries. One at Oval where he threw it away and India lost the match. He had the chance to play out for a draw but he exposed his temperament by throwing it away. At Sydney also he made a hundred but the match ended in a draw. Essentially, he had zero impact with his batting so far in tests/ODIs/T20Is. He is good in IPL though. Should stick to it. His keeping is an absolute disgrace and I don't even need to explain about it.

Im not underrating.

Rohit has already surpassed Sehwag in ODIs and is vastly superior

However since Sehwag's sample set and longevity was higher obv Rohit will not surpass him in Tests. But there is no reason he cannot have Sehwag type numbers for the rest of his career. Sehwag averaged in 20s in South Africa, NZ and England and did well in other countries. I believe Rohit can also put up similar numbers for the rest of his career. In India specifically Rohit averages 90+ after 10 test matches.

Rohit v Sehwag overall is a fair debate btw

stop your trolling. Yes drawn match in places where India histroically gets spanked is a disgrace.

New Zealand series. But Shaw is just a starter himself, so he won't have done wonders either.

Funny, that the guy who underrates someone like MS Dhoni himself has problem with others underrating Sehwag. At least Rohit Sharma is not a noob and is already better than Sehwag in ODI's. You will find fans who try to bring down legends like MS Dhoni for some noobs who can't even hold their bats properly. :inti
