How will the cricketing community remember a polarising figure like Faf du Plessis?

Faf Du Plessis will be retiring from ODIs after the WC more than likely . Also he doesn't seem to have long in tests and T20s as he has talked about finishing his career after the WC in England. The question I have is how will cricket choose to remember Faf?

A brilliant leader and great tactician? As a very good LO batter and respectable test cricketer? A gun fielder? Or will cricket fans choose to remember his disgraceful ball tampering?

Personally he is 1 of my favourite South African players of all time but his ball tampering antics do leave a stain on his career imo.

How about you guys ? Discuss.......

1)He won't be remembered much for his batting skills. Some may say, he was good under pressure but he hasn't won anything special for that to be remembered of. His overall batting career has been average.

2) He will certainly be remembered as a great tactician and a brilliant leader. No questions on that.

3) His ball tampering antics do leave a stain but as he didn't receive any ban, it is not something he will be disgraced much for.

So, overall a fantastic leader but an average batsmen. No doubt a great fielder as well.

They are impressive and we can call him a very good ODI batsmen but his legacy will be mostly about how good a tactician he was on field and his leadership quality.

Lol in the OP I said he is a good ODI batter, I don’t agree with your notion that he is an overall average batsmen.

His legacy will always be batting all day to save his debut Test at Adelaide.

It summed him up perfectly. A moderate batsman with incredible mental strength, which also made him into a strong captain (but with dubious ethics).

AB persuaded Faf against signing a Kolpak deal

Cape Town - Former Proteas star batsman AB de Villiers has revealed how he persuaded Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis against taking a Kolpak contract.

Du Plessis previously played for Lancashire on a Kolpak deal from 2008-2010 and according to De Villiers was considering a second county stint shortly after his debut in 2011.

"He (Faf) waited a bit longer. It happened quite quickly for me, a couple of doors opened up and I put my hand up at the right time," De Villiers said in an interview on Indian YouTube show, Breakfast with Champions.

"I think he was mentally in a great space when he made his debut. There was a moment where he was thinking of signing a Kolpak deal with an English county.

"He called me up and asked me what I thought about it. I said that 'not a long time from now there'll be a few retirements and you're pretty close and the coaches and the team are talking about you. So just hang in there a little bit longer'. And finally the breakthrough came.

"I'm not taking credit for that, but we did have that conversation... I'm very happy I was straight up (with him)," ended De Villiers.

Du Plessis will lead the Proteas in next week's Cricket World Cup in England and Wales.
