How would you describe 2019 for Pakistan cricket?

To me it was a year which started with some dismal performances in South Africa but brightened (as it normally does!) when we played PSL.

The lead up to the World Cup was pretty disappointing but once the WC started, I did have a glimmer of hope that we would do well and get to the semis....

The sacking of Mickey was unfortunate for me, but then Sarfaraz Ahmed's long overdue forced sabbatical kind of fixed that.

Misbah as Head Coach and CS, with Waqar at his side has been a curious time - not really sure what to make of it despite a lot of criticism from all quarters.

I am happy though as the year ends with where Babar Azam is with his batting and how Abid Ali, Naseem Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi have done.

The rest (BCB, Akhtar, Kaneria) is well just what Pakistan cricket has always been about - rollercoaster ride.

2019 was the year where the Pakistan team stagnated in the ODI format whilst going behind in the test and t 20 formats. A change had to be made after the World Cup and was correctly done so at least with regards to the captaincy. However, the jury is still out on the captaincy replacements. The biggest impact and the one going forward will be the change in coach and chief selector. The jury is still out on Misbah, as the results have been very underwhelming. However credit where it's due he has been open to trying new solutions for the team. Thus whilst 2019 was a disappointing year in total there are some green shoots. Shaheen Shah Afridi has progressed this year which is a good sign. 2019 has also thrown up some very promising fast bowling prospects in Mohammad Hasnain, Naseem Shah and Harris Rauf. In the batting Babar Azam has gone from strength to strength whilst Abid Ali is a reliable edition to the test and ODI teams.

Pakistan's victory in the ACC emerging players tournament is also a positive. Players such as Ammad butt, Muhammad Mohsin, Haider Ali and of course Rohail Nazir shone with their performances whilst Saud Shakeel demonstrated that he has the makings of being a future captain. Hopefully these lads get given chances in domestic cricket in 2020.

Lastly, the overhauled domestic structure will be really really useful in the long run once we can start getting better pitches. It will give us mentally strong and well prepared cricketers. It may also open up avenues for young pakistani coaches, especially given the role that Muhammad Waseem has played for the Northern team this season.

So let's look forward to 2020 in hope. Pakistan has all the ingredients to once again become an effective test and one-day team. Hopefully the PSL will give us some more gems to enforce the batting in the T20 team inshallah.

Could have been better really low points were losing to Sri Lanka in t20 series and the loss to West Indies in World Cup , also loss to India in World Cup it was the same old story again

The high point for me personally was Pakistan showing fight in the World Cup when they won 4 games straight also beating England in World Cup was nice and of course test cricket coming to Pakistan

Half the Test team was in its thirties and failing. Misbah dumped one out of five of them.

The year 2019 was another impressive year for Pakistan U19.

They played two bilateral limited-overs away series against Sri Lanka and South Africa and participated in the eight-nation ACC U19 Asia Cup held in September in Sri Lanka.

The Rohail Nazir-led side won the five-match 50-0ver series against Sri Lanka 3-2 which took place from 26 May to 5 June 2019 before completing a whitewash over South Africa in the seven-match series held from 22 June to 7 July 2019.

In the ACC U19 Asia Cup in September, Pakistan couldn’t progress to the semi-final. But later that month, Pakistan U19 captain Rohail and opener Haider Ali played a crucial role in Pakistan’s successful ACC Emerging Asia Cup 2019 campaign in Bangladesh.

Rohail Nazir, the Pakistan U19 team captain said: “The year 2019 went well for the U19 team.

“Despite winning the series against Sri Lanka, we had some issues in the batting department. In our series against South Africa we rectified those mistakes which helped us to clean sweep South Africa in the 50-over series.

“The series against South Africa was important for us as the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup is scheduled to take place there and it helped us understand the conditions before the mega event.

“The players had a poor start in the ACC U19 Asia Cup 2019 where the team lost to Afghanistan in the opening match, and the morale of the players went down. Despite winning against Kuwait, the team couldn’t qualify for the semi-final stage of the tournament.

“Under head-coach Ijaz Ahmed, the team is in a position to give positive results, as Haider Ali and I had benefited a lot under his guidance while playing in the ACC Emerging Asia Cup.

“I am happy with my performance, where I performed consistently. Similarly Haider Ali, Naseem Shah and other players too have contributed in Pakistan U19 win in the year 2019.”

Calamatous. Mickey Arthur gone, Misbah back, loss after loss after loss, a bowling attack led by an 18-year old, getting beaten at home by Sri Lanka (was that 2019?), unable to make it past the group stages in the World cup, more humiliation in Australia......no signs of improvement....
