Ahead of Ivanka Trump’s visit to Hyderabad to attend the Global Entrepreneurship Summit at the end of this month, the city Police has launched a massive drive to remove beggars from the streets, saying “these acts are dangerous to the safety of the vehicular traffic and public in general”.

Hundreds of foreign delegates are expected to attend the summit to be held at Hitec City from November 28 to 30, and the Telangana Government which wants Hyderabad to be seen as a global capital, is keen on ensuring that no beggars are seen around.

On Wednesday, nearly 400 beggars were taken away from Goshamahal area and lodged at the rehabilitation centre at Chanchalguda Jail. “As per instructions of Police Commissioner M Mahender Reddy to make the city beggar-free, we have shifted those in our area to rehabilitation centre,” said Goshamahal ACP Narender Reddy.

“Some beggars argued that we were taking their freedom to live anywhere they want but we told them it was for their own good because they are going to the rehab centre where they will be taken care of,” an official said. About 6,000 beggars in the city would be shifted to rehab centres and shelters for homeless.

Hyderabad Police had conducted a similar operation when Bill Clinton visited in 2000. Officials said US President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka may do some sightseeing. She will also interact with entrepreneurs. The five-day World Telugu Conference is also going to be held from December 15 which would be attended by hundreds of NRIs.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner M Mahender Reddy banned begging on city streets through a prohibitory order issued Tuesday. The prohibitory order would be in force till January 7, 2018.

“It has come to my notice through the public that many beggars are begging alms in an indecent manner. They are also employing children and handicapped persons to solicit or receive alms at the main junctions of the road. Such acts are causing annoyance and awkwardness by exposing in an indecent manner to divert the attention of the vehicular traffic as well as pedestrians and public in general to induce them to give alms. These acts are dangerous to the safety of the vehicular traffic and public in general,” the notification read, adding that begging is prohibited under Section 144 of criminal procedure code 1973 and the order would remain in force for two months.

Why is the government taking their freedom away. If they really are concerned about the beggars well being then why do it now why didn't they do it before since they've been begging for a long time. Complete and utter hypocrisy and why aren't they doing it in other states, cities like New Delhi, Amritsar, Bangaluru, Mumbai. Pune, Ahmedabad and so on.

Just because in Hyderabad its a global convention and many business people and Trumps daughter and world media is also coming that they are selling this fake image.

It's pretty obvious their not really concerned about the well-being of the beggars ...they're more concerned about how the city looks when all these foreigners arrive..and it's the right thing to do. Indians would seriously lose it if Ivanka on her return made comments on how bad things were.

These beggars should be put in a ship and sent to other countries. Always bringing a bad name for us.

Begging is a full time job for many many people in India. This includes disabled, women, old and tons of kids. Its a big network and there is a big begging mafia in every city. Streets are divided into various begging groups and any beggar who trespasses into a different street will get badly beaten up.
How dare the Govt removes these mafias from the streets. Just for a couple of days. After that Beggars will come back to rule the streets again.

This....last year a one handed "beggar" called Govindachamy tried to rape a girl in the ladies compartment of train during night. She was alone, tried to escape but he hit her head on wall, thew her out of train, sexually assaulted and looted her before she died. This was a huge nirbhaya like issue in kerala. But guess what? This guy had a huge mafia/beggar lobby behind him who brought the best criminal lawyers of India to defend him. He got acquitted from all the murder chargers but was awarded with only a life term imprisonment for rape.

Begging is an organised racket in India.

If the beggars have so much influence then why can't they stop the police from removing them from begging. And stop them from taking away their rights. Why don't they give a good beating to the police as they can gang up on the police easily with their numbers?

Just like Street goons who have links to political parties. Those goons do get locked up for a few days every now and then. But they comeback to the streets once released from the Jail.

Begging mafia is a big business.

Also becoming one in Pakistan.

Take this Indian begging mafia out of Kashmir too please. Wherever i go, i see these Bihari kids and women running after people and begging for alms.

Every Sufi shrine, Every temple, every tourist spot, every traffic signal, every petrol pump, everywhere you see these beggers who have been imported from India.

I am not saying some Kashmiris dont beg but they generally operate differently due to stigma attached to begging in Kashmiri society. They are hardly an issue especially in public places.

These begging gangs from India are such a nuisance. They pounce on tourists and locals alike, it is unbearable. You cant even eat on a street without having one of these begger kids pulling your shirt and giving you that desperate look.

I am not sure how they are being allowed to operate and cause discomfort in public space. Gives me an impression that even the police is involved and get some amount from these begger bosses. Its ridiculous.
