After claiming a historic Test series winagainst Australia – India’s first ever Down Under – Indian skipper Virat Kohli was all praise for his team stating that he has never been more proud of a team than this one.

“Firstly I want to say, I’ve never been more proud of a team than this one,” said Kohli during the post-match presentation. “The culture we’ve been able to build over the last 12 months. Our transition started here when I became the captain for the first time. Only one word to say, I’m proud. To lead these players is an honour and a privilege. They make the captain look good. Definitely deserve to enjoy this moment.” (ALSO READ: ‘Best Indian team I’ve been part of’ says Man of the Series Cheteshwar Pujara)

It was a bit of an anti-climatic end with no play possible on the final day, but the result of the series was already known and Kohli proclaimed the series win as his best achievement of his career so far. (ALSO READ: India win first Test series in Australia following SCG wash-out)

“By far this is my best achievement. Has to be on top of the pile. When we won the World Cup, I was a young player. I saw the others getting emotional. This series will give us a different identity as a team. What we’ve been able to achieve is something to be really proud of. That’s something that we spoke about, just wanted to go back to basics, not be flamboyant,” said Kohli, who scored 282 runs in the series.

Cheteshwar Pujara, who scored 521 runs in four matches to be the highest run-getter in the series walked away with the Player of the Match award for his 193 in the first innings at the SCG and the Player of the series.

“Want to give a special mention to Pujara. He’s one guy always willing to accept things. He’s the nicest man around,” said Kohli, adding, “Special mention to Mayank Agarwal too. To come in on Boxing Day and play like that against a high quality attack. Someone like Rishabh as well, coming into his own and dominating attacks.”

While Pujara was the key man with the bat for India, bowlers, led by Jasprit Bumrah formed the bedrock of this historic win and Kohli was all praise for his quicks.

“We knew once the batsmen score, our bowlers are lethal. The way the bowlers have dictated terms in this series. And not just this one, the previous two tours as well. I’ve not seen happen in Indian cricket. They don’t look at a pitch and think there’s nothing for us. It’s a revelation for Indian cricket and a learning for the other bowlers back home. They definitely deserve to be here and breaking record of the great West Indian fast bowlers is no mean feat. Definitely, this is just the stepping stone for us.”

Kohli also exuded confidence that this series win is just the star of this young team.

“The average age in the team is quite low. The most important thing for us has been belief. We’ve believed in SA that we’re on the right track, we believed in England, and now we’ve got the results to back it. Most important thing is what you feel as a group, not what the voices outside say about you. If your intention is right, God gives you things you can’t imagine. Our intent has always been good, and that is to take Indian cricket forward,” he added.

Great skipper leading the best cricket team at the moment. Proud of you Virat...keep going.

When he retires, not only would he be remembered as India’s greatest batsman, he will also be recognized as India’s greatest cricketer.

He is breaking all records with the bat and the team is scaling new heights under his leadership. He has pretty much achieved everything, and the only thing missing now is a World Cup, which could very well happen in 2023 in India if not next year.

Pretty sure he will end India’s slump in England as well. He was unlucky not to last year. Things could have been different had he won a couple of tosses.

Ganguly changed the mindset of Indian cricketers, Dhoni built on it but now Kohli is taking it to new heights.

U mean WC as a captain? Kohli was already part of the WC winning 2011 team and steadied the ship with Gambhir after early wickets.

He has been helped by the fact that he has immensely talented players at his disposal. If agarwal was Pakistani, he’d be our kohli.

Gone are the days when Aussies thought the best strategy to counter Indians was to cut down the boundaries. This is a very smart Indian outfit that consciously chose to cut down risks and grind the opposition down. By Sydney, the best bowler in Aussie lineup, Cummins could barely bowl. Everybody knows that Pujara can grind but it's surprising to see that Kohli has the same SR as Pujara in this series. He didn't perform as well as he wanted but again claimed the best batsman tag with his performance in Perth when everyone else failed.

There is a certain cunningness and ambition in this team that can scale new heights in every format in the coming years. The pieces are falling into place slowly with the opening pair shaping up, relentless bowling unit and the middle order that can dominate or grind the opposition. The mistakes made in SA and Eng were rectified to a certain extent and there are lessons learned in this series too. I see this Indian outfit retaining their No. 1 ranking for a few years to come.

Too self-congratulatory is Virat, casually making it seem he wasnot singularly responsible for India losing a few tests In SA and England. :)

Time to follow through and show who's boss when Zimbabwe tour us for 2 tests in a few weeks time.

Very well done to India, hats off to Cheteshwar Pujara the standout performer, oh and Bumrah too!

I really feel happy for Kohli and wanted him to win something big.Kohli has now become the first Asian Captain to win Test series in Australia and India's first Australia tour was in 1947 which was 71 years ago.

It is Kohli's Greatest/Proudest moment of his career as of now.

That tour should be cancelled. White ball cricket is priority right now and plenty of rest especially with the damned IPL.

Hope our kaptaan calms dawn now that he has achieved something substantial. No need to overcompensate with "aggression" now.

Poor Zimbabwe have all their test series - home or away - cancelled. Let's not do that to them and play it as scheduled.

If you want to cancel something cancel the bloody IPL.

With the exception of Rohit and perhaps Yadav, none of India's main Limited Overs players are going to play in the Zimbabwe Tests anyway.

You think the powers that be would let that happen :))) They couldn't care less even if we crash out the CWC in the group stage but IPL is going to happen whether we like it or not. Star Sports, Team owners - nobody will be happy with that. I really feel for Zim but we don't have a choice. :( Also need to cancel that ODI series with OZ at home, push the IPL to an earlier date and arrive early in England for extra warmups. We can compensate ZIm by touring over there some time later.

It won't generate any revenue then. What is the point of such a series? India can tour them at a later stage which would benefit them more than touring here.

Yeah let's just cancel the IPL. How naive can you be? This is not some kids game, it's a multimillion dollar business.

Should test our bench strength against Zimbos. Play the likes of Shubman Gill, Aniket Chowdhury, Ankit Rajput and Mohammad Siraj.

Should rest all the bowlers and senior batters- Kaptaan, Che and Rahane.

Agreed. Play Rohit and Yadav as part of senior quota and try out as many from our bench strength as we can.
Both Kuldeep and Jadeja should be rested as well. We can contemplate playing Ashwin too since it's unlikely he would make any comeback in the ODI squad any soon and thus no risk of injuries keeping in mind the upcoming world cup.

Playing Ashwin is overkill.

Markande is bowling really well. He is right arm leggie which we currently don't have. plus he bats decently too.

Gill has to be handed over a test debut in the Zim series.

It is a charity series. There is going to be a loss anyway. If India plays its full-strength team, it will be a mismatch for the ages and both Tests will be over in 2 days.

But Ashwin hasn't played that much cricket despite being part of all 3 tours due to variety of reasons. I say play him against Zimbabwe which would serve dual purposes of regaining his lost confidence as well boosting up his averages:afridi

I haven't paid much attention to the FC stats of Markande and have only seen bowling him in IPL. Is he that impressive in Ranji?

Good work by India! This has been coming India has been touring well to Australia for the last decade or so but strong Australian teams stopped them from winning but this current Australian team had no chance. The score line really should read 3-1. However I must say this is not India's best performance in Australia best was that drawn series against that epic Australian team in 2004.

He is a modern legspinner. Can turn the ball on a supportive pitch but is capable of bowling with discipline on non helpful pitch. Has variations and intelligence to use them only when/if required. Has got big heart too :afridi.

Some of punjab's ranji matches were telecast so you can probably check him out.

Zim is playing just 1 test (not 2) with india in march.
Test specialists can play.
Kohli, rohit, bumrah, shami, can rest.

We are proud of the team too, Virat and Ravi.

Well done guys.

Success and disappointments are part of the sport but cannot doubt this team always plays with love and passion for the country.

The respect they are giving to test cricket is showing.

36 AO can happen to anyone on an odd day but to come back from it with a win and a hard fought draw can only be done by a team that has a culture of hard work and great character.

We as fans too, this team has shown some real heart esp after the disaster you left us in!

My Goodness.

So proud of this competitive spirit and character being shown by this Indian team.

Trailing by 186 at some point and down to the tail.

Now India is trailing by 36 only :14:

Have pretty much eaten up 3rd session of Day 3 too :14:

Strac is breathing fire here.

Thus is no ordinary bowing line up to contain, the way India and the tail enders are doing. Its absolutely amazing.
